I love the way that McMenamins puts their restaurants in historic buildings. I've been to their Bend restaurant, which is in an old-school building, and their Roseburg restaurant, which is in the old train station. This building is part of the old Imbrie farm, which goes all the way back to the mid-1800s. I've never had a bad meal at McMenamin's. The building is beautiful. It definitely has that "roadhouse" vibe.". I was seated and served quickly. I decided to go with the hokey poke nachos. Which is a seasonal summer dish. It had marinated tuna, poke, (the sauce was amazing, I'm not sure of everything that was in the sauce, but I could taste the sesame oil. it did not overpower anything else on the dish, but I knew it was there.). It also had Chips, Cucumber-Pickled Ginger Tsukemono, which is a Japanese relish, green onions, and sesame seeds, and it had both a wasabi aïoli and a Sriracha aïoli drizzle. asked for the sauces on the side, because I wasn't sure how strong they would be. It was amazing! It was a giant portion. The chips were crispy, and not oily at all, there was a very generous portion of the tender poke. I loved the cucumber relish, and the green onion and sesame seeds also not very well with the Dish. I was pleasantly surprised with the two sauces. I could definitely taste the wasabi, and the aïoli kept it from blowing out my sinuses. I normally do not like Sriracha at all, but again, the aïoli mellowed it out. I put some of the sauces on top of the nachos, and also dipped some of the nachos in the sauces. Next time I would definitely have them on top. I had enough to take back to my hotel for a second meal. The price was very reasonable, considering the quantity of the quality of the food. For great meals at McMenamins, I am now 3 for 3. Lunch at McMenamins great for beer and burgers and specials. This time it they have a new menu. Ok, I saw some of my favorites like Scooby Snacks, stake and frites, commutation Berger. But some new things are Hoky Poky, brisket sandwich, and other items. I asked the server and the brisket was the top choice. Ask about the amount of brisket the server indicated plenty. As I was drinking the Sunflower IPA ( real nice ), our orders came. I started eating the Cajun Tots first as usual, then looked at the sandwich. One big question: Where's The Beef!? Huge bun, lots of slaw on top of a few thin deli slices of brisket and you are blessed with the $25 price tag. I took one bite and said NO! The server returned and asked how it was and I politely explained it's not worth the price. The server said they will take it off the bill and took my plate. And asked if I would like something else instead. No, because little dude already finished his hamburger. The server took off the sandwich from the bill. 1) They charge $3.75 for powdered hot chocolate. I've never been to a restaurant that serves powdered hot chocolate. That's what you get on an airplane. Starbucks? Syrup. Denny's? Syrup. They need to fix this pronto because that is apalling. 2) My Mother's coffee came out lukewarm. No steam. We had to wait for them to brew a new pot because we asked for a replacement. That shouldn't have happened either. Firstly, the server should've noticed and not served coffee that was not steaming. Secondly, the staff need to watch their pot timers and know when the coffee has been sitting too long. 3) I was not brought a spoon with my stew. I was expected to eat it with a fork until I asked for a spoon. 4) It took 2 hours for dinner. Our server Ben was slow and needed the help of several staff to ensure that tasks were completed correctly and promptly. 5) They tried to serve us dessert with all of our dirty entree plates still on the table. I had to ask them to bus the table first. I strongly dislike McMenamins. I'm sure it was popular back in the day for good reason. As with everything else, they now serve mediocre food by middling staff for outrageous prices. I need to speak up next time someone in my party suggests it. We found McMenamins! What a local treasure! The place in Hillsboro is an institution and such a great one! The food was great, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere and grounds were simply amazing. I ordered the Salisbury steak and so did daughter. I could not think about finishing mine, but daughter scarfed hers down and offered to finish my plate. Hubs ordered garlic chicken Parmesan and said it was wonderful. It smelled wonderful. Came with family here last weekend, and was not super impressed. The pretzel appetizer was great definitely a highlight. The beer selection was decent as well. Service was pretty disappointing, extremely long non-excusable waits for drinks, dinner took over 45 mins and one entree was wrong, and others were missing sides that we had to request several times. Food was mid, at best. When the bill finally came, the wrong entree was still listed on the bill. Not sure if he was having a SUPER off night, but based on this experience I would not go back. read more

I'm a McMenamins fan in general, but this location appeals to me in special ways. For a non-hotel property, the grounds are spacious and the atmosphere is perfect for the iconic McMenamins experience. I normally grab food in Imbrie Hall, which is a two story A frame building. You can grab a seat the bar downstairs, score a booth in the downstairs perimeter or sneak upstairs to take it all in from a well appointed perch. Each option is uniquely wonderful. The beer on tap does rotate every month. You can't go wrong with the Ruby if you want something light, or the Hammerhead is just as solid in a different way. Want to try something fun and seem like you're in the know? Order a 'rubber head,' which is a mixture of the two. I love walking by the Little White Shed at night as I wander through the property. There is something about the smell of juniper wood burning and the options for gathering that beckon me to stop and meander for a while. I need to spend time there more often. Ultimately, it's McMenamins. It's whimsical, the beer is plentiful and the service is consistently going to be just slightly above average. However, when you look at this location distinctly, you see appeal in the property itself, the uniqueness of the different food and beverage concepts, and enjoy the easy access to the freeway. Check it out and make sure you linger long enough to spend some time at the Little White Shed. You won't regret it. read more

What do you do on National Tater Tot Day? You stop by McMenamins for some of their signature Cajun Tots, of course! Steph and I stopped by for a lunch date to celebrate the day and collect the McMenamins Passport stamp commemorating the occasion. We started off with an order of those famous Cajun tots; they were perfectly seasoned as always. I also tried the Voodoo chicken wings, which were excellent; the skin was crispy and the wings were juicy, while the Voodoo sauce added a nice, mild flavor and just a touch of heat to the mix. We were seated by one of the numerous wood stoves in the vintage building, which made the whole experience feel incredibly cozy on a cool winter day. The staff was friendly and the service was prompt throughout our visit. This is our closest McMenamins location, so we will definitely be back to grab a bite or to attend one of the many festivals they hold here throughout the year! read more

Had reservations for 1:00. We were there promptly, our order was Taken at 1:20 and the food came at 2:00. During that wait there were no refills on soda/water. The truffle fries and tater tot appetizer were good. I had the chicken green curry bowl and while the chicken was cooked well, The bowl was soaked in a mayo like concoction. I thought it would be more coconut based but it tasted like rice soaked in eggs and oil. My husband and son both had a burger that was completely soggy on the bottom, as was my son's cheese pizza. The fries tasted and felt like they'd been sitting on the warming plate for awhile. I've lived here for 15 Years and eaten all over Hillsboro but never here, this was a $200 (for 7 people, no alcohol) one and done for us. read more

This is a fun rebuild of an old structure, a McMenamins theme. Don't let the street view of tall bushes discourage you. Once in the landscaping is well kept and offers great shade. Lots of parking. There are several options to enjoy your evening. Cornelius Roadhouse is the main structure with a restaurant and bar (display case of McMenamins merchandise). There are two bars as well. Seating can be indoor or outdoors. Menu for each McMenamins has different choices and seasonal specials to boot. Beer is always rotating with their private brews and guest breweries. Signature cocktails and fun deserts are also on rotation schedule. We have visited several times and the McMenamins team has been awesome. Friendly, easy to talk to, and catch when want to. McMenamins is one of the most innovative full service restaurant chains out there. No two are alike, and all of the ones I've been to (10 or more) are charming and incredibly well done, with dark wood, comfortable lighting, good food (nothing fancy, but way better with more variety than the typical tavern). They all feature a long list of draft beers, a full bar, and great friendly service. They brew their own beer and distill a number of spirits. read more

Feeling the need for a little pick me up I stopped in to the Roadhouse. Nice vibe with all the parking lots and paths. It was evening so you have string lights in many places. I entered no hostess I asked the bar keep if I should seat myself. I got a oh...there should be a hostess but eventually he said I will seat you. I took a seat with a nice view of the bar so there was a little life. I started with the Dia Dorado Mexican Style Lager. It seemed a bit sour. Not really a Mexican Style Lager. Probably not have that again. I lived in Mexico for some time and had Mexican beers before. Bacon Cheeseburger was good. I display. Cajun fries a bit crispy later in the evening maybe the old was a bit toasted. But not undercooked that is good. The burger was solid. Medium rare pinkish on the inside. Tasty. Service was good attentive. Happy customers and happy servers. four stars for the ambiance and servers. Food was ok maybe 3.5 because the tots. I will be back...great place for entertainment. Came here to eat for dinner and decided to order the fish and chips with slaw and fries and paid somewhere in the low $20s for the meal. Overall I wasn't to impressed with my meal. The fries were fine; nothing special but not bad tasting with good texture. I thought the slaw was lacking in flavor and tasted relatively bland. As for the fish, I thought the amount I got for how much I paid wasn't really justified unfortunately. I got 2 fillets, and both were relatively small in size and comparable to a regular chicken tender. The flavor wasn't bad, but again wasn't the best tasting fish and chips I had. I do however like the ambience of the whole area. I like the rustic look of the main restaurant and the fact that the whole area is surrounded by tall evergreen trees makes you forget that you are in the city for a brief moment. There are a couple of outdoor lounging areas that are dispersed where people can enjoy a beer and hangout with a bonfire. read more

When I first landed in Portland - the first place my brother suggested to go to for dinner was McMenamins. Being a Kansas City native, I've never heard of this chain before so I was ecstatic to go. The ambiance of the place is just simply amazing. The outdoor area is extremely beautiful and almost resembles a garden of some sort. I usually never talk about ambiance or decor a whole lot but I needed to note this because it was just breathtaking. Now let's talk service. I was very alert when it came to service because I had read multiple reviews saying service was slow/bad. Personally for me, on this Tuesday evening - I experienced no issues with service and it was nothing extraordinary by any means but it was your typical average service. No complaints here. Could definitely find this place being packed since it is very large inside/outside so if service is a big deal for you - maybe go on a weekday when it won't be too congested. Now let's talk food. I started off with a seasonal drink which contained vodka and I believe elderflower (I could be very wrong) It was pretty strong in taste but it was very good to me! For appetizer we ordered the cajun tots and fries. There was nothing that stood out to me about the tots - I found them dowsed in heavy seasoning which gave them an over salty flavor. The ranch helped cover the saltiness but i didn't reach for this too much. If anything, I reach for the fries the most because they were your standard fries but the sauce was extraordinary. Honestly, an excellent pairing would be plain tater tots with the mystic sauce. I ordered the Jr Jumbo Deluxe burger with fries and a side a ranch because nothing stood out to me too much on the menu. The patty itself was lacking seasoning but the egg helped. The fries were fries. It's difficult to critique something as simple as this because there isn't really much to say. *If you come here, expect to spend a little more money. You will find dishes are typically within the $18-$20 range which adds up if you have multiple people with you. *If you think you are going to get amazing food here, please lower your expectations :/ The quality of the food is comparable to a Chili's or Applebees. *i would suggest coming during happy hour OR sticking with drinks and a small appetizer I was going back and forth between a 3 and 4.. the ambiance and environment is definitely a 4 or 5 but the food would honestly rank lower.. i'd have to rate it a 2 so I just went with 3/5 stars. My original review from 2014 that I stand by: Normally I would give most McMenamin's 4 stars, but this one makes - BY FAR - the BEST margaritas I've ever had. Crazy amazing good. They don't squeeze the fruit until you order the drink. I challenged the bartender in the Doctor's Office at the Grand Lodge to make one better & while he also fresh squeezed the juice, his wasn't as good as Imbrie Hall's is each time we go. Oh and the steak salad is fabulous as are the cajun tots. My updated review: I've been coming to this McMenamin's since the big house was the only building to eat in (early 90's). It's a community staple. I went with my son in October 2023 and we had a delightful afternoon. It was a gorgeous afternoon to sit outside. I had a salad, we shared tots, and we each had ciders. This spot on a lovely day is one of the BEST places to be in Washington County (and that's saying a lot!). read more

The food was mostly pretty good, except the pizza came out cold and chewy. However, it took two hours to have a meal and we had to hunt down a person and ask them to send our server when we decided to replace the pizza with something else, and when we wanted to order another drink, and to order dessert, and to ask for the bill. It was over $200 for our meal for 4 people which included removing the pizza and two of the four drinks (which was a nice gesture). It was an interesting atmosphere and would have been a really great dinner if it didn't feel like everything was so difficult and we didn't leave just exhausted from the waiting and waiting and waiting...... read more

I am looking for solid places to order salads. The Aztec Salad has been a favorite. Romaine, corn & black bean salsa, avocado, tortilla strips, cheddar cheese, tomato, jalapeño, cilantro, onion, chipotle dressing. I veganized it by omitting the cheese and chipotle dressing and got a side of the Mystic 18 dressing. I also omit the onion, because I'm not a fan of onion. Our server was super nice. Took quite a while to take our food orders and even longer to bring out the food which was barely warm and even longer to bring out ketchup for the fries after we asked for the 3rd time. It wasn't a busy day as maybe 1/3 of the restaurant was full but service still dragged. Thee food and drinks here are fine but nothing to write home about. We had the cup of clam chowder, cheeseburger sliders and steak frites. Clam chowder was probably the best out of the bunch, cheeseburger sliders were toasted on the top but bottom bun was cold, and the steak was overdone. I'm sure this is a great spot for locals to grab a beer and I love how each location has their own history, but if you're looking for an amazing meal with prompt service this sadly isn't the place for you. read more

Long has the wait been to go to McMenamins Cornelius Roadhouse but it finally happened and like most excursions to a McMenamins location it was a lot of fun and of course I had my trusty passport handy to get some stamps. The Roadhouse building itself was very, very cool. Large and spacious it was with the usual intriguing atmosphere that a McMenamins has to offer. I got some steak tacos which were really good and Steve got a Korean inspired sandwich. I liked my tacos a bit more but his sandwich was good too. For beer I got a small pour of a S'mores Stout and that too was quite tasty. They did a good job with having it resemble the camping dessert for the flavor. We walked the grounds and paid a visit to the nearby shed bar. This bar was fun inside for sure with the moody look it had to it. And although it was a small place inside there was a lot of outdoor seating. The rest of the grounds seem pretty forested in which you can wonder about in and all of the shadiness was pleasant to escape the sun on occasions. Fun stop and looking forward to returning back. They have a distillery tour here sometimes in which there is an activity stamp on your passport for but they recommend that you call ahead to see if a tour can be made available as it seems not everyday seems to be possible. read more

This is probably my favorite Mcmenamins location. The property is not too big or too small. It is so beautiful in the summer. The buildings are very rustic and feel like cabins. The way the apple trees line the grassy areas provides ample coverage. There are plenty of picnic benches around to sit on. That one day our family was here, we spent a couple of hours eating lunch, playing ball, and taking breaks in between. We even got the luxury of watching a wedding procession. The food I got was above average from their usual options. Personally, I got the seasonal moon salad with added chicken. There was a little bit of sweetness from the cranberries, sweet potatoes, and honey glazed pecans. There was a nice crunchy texture from the nuts. And the small amount of goat cheese did not overpower the dish. The salad was well covered by the maple stout vinaigrette. Really nice sweet and savory option. Despite our numbers, we were well taken care of. Service was quick and thorough. I would like to go this location with the kids again once spring comes around. read more

I'm a regular here so I don't understand the current rating. I think they definitely deserve more than 3.5 stars. And, judging by how crazy busy they are throughout each week of the year, they have many more fans than their current rating would imply. First of all, the atmosphere is amazing. You would never guess how old the restaurant actually is. And I'm not going to tell you. Every time I walk in this place I feel like I'm going a little back in time. And the place is comfortable. From the lighting, to the colors, to the textures, and the sounds: it is supremely comfortable. I think the food is terrific. I enjoy the seasonal entrees (please bring back the stew!), the pizzas, the salads, the sandwiches, and the burgers. Their pizza is terrific. And their soup is terrific so I always ask what the soup of the day is. I especially enjoy the tomato bisque. And the deserts. Omg. I love the NW berry bar, the cheesecake, and the Frank's rum cake (take heed of the warnings in that cake!) Of course, there's plenty of good beers to choose from. And I love how they make so many of the products they sell. But they also have terrific cocktails. Their Mai Tai is my favorite of all time. And their Lovely Cadillac Margarita is terrific, better than many Mexican restaurants I've been to. Their Pear Sidecar is also delightful. The Bulleit Rye Manhattan is my go to. And their cocktail menu changes frequently. Their outdoor space is spectacular and available all year long. The cold weather brings the perfect time to enjoy the fireplaces outside. They certainly have the best outdoor space of any place on the west side, and one of the best in all of Portland. What I appreciate most is the exceptional service I receive here. They have a terrific crew of dedicated, skilled, and unique people who work very hard to keep this place running smoothly, in spite of the (sometimes) overwhelming traffic this restaurant draws. This is the place where everybody knows my name so I enjoy every visit here. And I'm grateful that the McMenamins wizards created such a place and then found such wonderful people to run it. read more

It took 30 mins to get to us to take an order and another 1 hour for the order to arrive. People were not willing to come to table for any additional things or just to take an order. We were hungry and a large group, so couldn't step out. The food was good. But not worth the service what we received. Definitely wouldn't recommend this place if you are hungry and want to grab food soon. read more

I have come here a couple times and had pleasant experiences for both but tonight I came with my boyfriend. He has never been before. We sat down and after about 20 minutes we finally got our water and orders taken. She came back half an hour later with the appetizer and then about 40 minutes after with our food. My boyfriend's burger was cold and my Cobb salad barely had any egg or bacon on it. It also seemed like it had been left for a bit. We never got an apology and we got checked in with once after our food. Super disappointed. read more

Team dinner and they handle large groups amazingly well. The grounds are so much fun! They've got a distillery and separate pub plus all kinds of nooks and crannies and outdoor gardens to enjoy. You can easily get lost while sipping your libations. We finally got seated at picnic style tables and let me tell you, dragging these solid wood tables together is out of the question even with lots of helping hands. We were close enough to still be able to hang out though. Starters included the famous Cajun tater tots and dip. They're quite tasty! For my entree I ordered the salmon burger and a veggie. The salmon was perfectly seasoned and cooked, I'd totally recommend it! Come here for the drinks and a great laidback hangout in the gardens. read more

I enjoyed, but didn't love, a punch-like cocktail. What's particularly appealing about this location is the outside seating. Food is average like most of the other McMenamin properties. We do love the ambiance and the grounds of this property. Its close to home and we held our 5 year wedding vow renewal here in the Octagonal barn last year. We come here to grab food and sit in the forest or by the little white shed. Wondering these ground at the last Brewfest was so fun and we even found the elephant bar. We have taken the distillery and brew tours here as well and received our stamps in our passports. You cant go wrong with happy hour with a cold drink and some Cajun tots. Service is hit and miss mostly very slow and food prices have gone up so much that make the regular food items with just meh food not really worth a full meal. Seasonal desserts are pretty good.
