I'm always leery when starting with a new barber, but I had no choice once my old one retired. I went through a couple that were very unsatisfactory (cutting too short or just badly) and went searching on Yelp to see if there was anyone out there. I grew up in the neighborhood. My dad used to bring me to Gary to get a haircut from the age of 4-7(I'm 33 now). Even as a kid I remember having a great time getting my haircut the same time as my brother. It was family bonding time with my dad, brother and me at the barber shop. I ended up going back to Gary in 2015 after moving back to area and growing out my hair and beard out for over 1.5 years. $30 for the cut and beard trim included. I have been a happy client now for the last 8 years! Each appointment is memorable and filled with conversation, most have been about our experiences growing up in San Francisco. Yesterday, my wife and I brought our 1 year old in for his first cut. Gary and his wife did an amazing job and our son's experience and he didn't cry at all. I had my cut the next day! If you're looking for a quick cut and an experience that is not personal than this isn't the shop for you. Gary takes the time to learn about you to build a strong barber client relationship. So expect conversation, which is very much a great part of the experience. It's important to note that there are no walk in's even for his regulars. Gary has been cutting my hair for the past 12 years. He doesn't take walk-ins as he has more than enough regulars. I suggest if you want to become a regular client is to walk in and wait for one of his regulars to cancel and then you have your in. I also know that Gary won't make you wait the entire day and will eventually squeeze you into his schedule. I love this place because all I have to do is sit down and get my haircut without any worries if he's doing a good job. I don't know how much haircuts cost as I just hand him $22 every time. I've given up on what to pay him as the price varies from $18-20 so I make it $22 just to make sure his tip is covered. If I'm in a real pinch I have his wife cut my hair and she does a pretty good job as well. It's a nice family run business. Always make sure you find out his vacation schedule because his vacations tend to be at least 2 weeks. I've visited Gary at his shop a few times before and everything has generally went well. He gives a really great haircut. Accepts cash and payment through Venmo. However, trying to actually book an appointment seems to be an issue. Recently, I wanted a haircut from Gary. I called and left a voicemail with my contact info during business hours, but I never received a follow up. I called 7 days later, left another message, and never received a follow up. I called again a few days later (today) and Gary finally answered. But I guess he's really busy and doesn't really have same day or even next day appointments. That's fine and all, but I think some communication goes a long way with the customer. He was a little short with me on the phone today, too, and it's fine to feel frustrated with me, as a customer, while I'm trying to figure out when I can make an appointment based on both of our availability. But again, I think if there was some additional communication in the form of a call back in the first or second time, I wouldn't feel compelled to jot down my thoughts here. Gary, if you read this, it sounds like you're busy and you have a huge cliental with many frequent customers. You may need a better appointment system. read more

My boyfriend needed a haircut the morning we were leaving town for a wedding, so we found Gary and Leeza's on Yelp. I sent him alone hoping he would manage. Apparently, Gary was booked that morning, but when my boyfriend walked in, he just stared him down awkwardly for a solid minute and finally said something along the lines of "I'm obviously booked. Can I help you?" and just kept staring until my admittedly very awkward boyfriend left. It's totally 100% fine that he was booked, but a little customer service would have been appreciated. Gary is a San Francisco monument. He'll line you up right - the man has been cutting hair since he could hold scissors and he shapes your hair just right. I've been going to Gary since I was about 12, and I can probably thank him for helping me evolve out of the side-part look of my youth. While the man cuts a good hair, that's almost secondary to the ambiance and conversation you get. Gary spits some legit talk (girl advice, career advice, sports, politics, Sicilian history/culture, really anything) and always has you feeling like a new man after your cut. The shops ambiance is perfect too - clean, crisp, stylish, without seeming too bourgie. He's got a plethora of magazines to choose from while you're waiting, including some quality men's mags, but throw the reading material aside while you're getting your hair did because Gary's gonna spit some knowledge at you. The most comfortable I have felt at a barber in a long time, Gary has a very laid back attitude and loves to dish about anything ranging from the lack of sun in SF to the current state of the Giants to foreign oil and alternative fuel options. You sit, you talk, he cuts, $17 dollars and 20 minutes later you look nice and leave informed about the world....... I Used to pay $8 at hack a cut clipper joints and even tried $55 snooty salons elsewhere but Gary and Leeza's feels warm, comfortable, and just right. I told him I had thinning hair and he kept it long on the sides and only used his clippers for a cleanup at the bottom, very attentive to your style and needs as a dude with dude's hair. I spent the past 2 years with my stylist in Davis, where I went to school, after graduating and moving back to SF, I was in a frantic search for a new stylist...I searched high and low, and thankfully came across Gary and Leeza's on Yelp! I called the day before and made an appointment with Gary. The place is small (you might miss it if you don't see the barber pole outside, but VERY accommodating, comfortable chairs, I sat down and immediately flipped through the new Rolling Stone with Lady Gaga on the cover. I was really nervous mainly because this was my first time with a new stylist in 2 years, so I was a bit apprehensive, but before, during, and after the cut, Gary kept me VERY well informed about what he was doing to my hair, what he felt would work best, and threw in a bunch of compliments (and really, who doesn't like being told they look good?) I'm a fairly reserved person when meeting new people, but by the time I left, I felt like I've known Gary for much longer. He was friendly, entertaining, and knew how to keep a conversation going about everything from college and law school to American Idol and Carrie Underwood's weight loss haha! To be honest, I wasn't really paying attention to what Gary was doing with my hair because he's such a great conversationalist! When he was done, he held up a mirror for me and I was flabbergasted with how good my hair looked. I have very thick hair and have had some stylists who don't know how to work with it. My regular barber was booked through the week so I had to get a quick haircut to clean myself up for my soon to be god daughter's baptism. I found this place through yelp and went to the 7x7 link on the review and thought it seemed pretty legit. That and it is on the same block that one of my friends lived on which means I wouldn't get lost trying to find it (I'm horrible with directions). Gary gave me a standard taper with a trim. It looks great. He is also a talker and keeps GREAT conversation (talked about music and SI/SH rivalry during my cut). Super chill and really nice. The cost is pretty much average to what I pay at my other regular spot. Since this place is closer, I could definitely see myself coming out here more often. read more

Nice little haircut place to go to it's cozy and neat in there. I've always lived near it in the neighborhood but mainly only went there when I was little with my mom. So since I'm trying to get out more often and try different places I needed a haircut and decided to visit this place again for a new fancier modern type look for my head. So I went in and met Gary and made an appointment for the next day and he helped me out a lot and for when I got my haircut he helped me also pick out and decide a good hairstyle for myself. I believed and trusted him and I really like it now. I even felt more confident about my hair of course. But still also afraid because I'm not used to it and still shy. A good haircut at a reasonable price is hard to find, and Gary meets both criteria. The fact that he does not take walk ins is unsettling at first, "You mean I have to make an appointment?" but the relaxed atmosphere and great results are well worth it. Having a line out the door and a stressed barber trying to maximize profits, does not a happy haircut make. I've been coming to Gary since summer of 2009! I found a place so close to my house and I was begging for somebody close and good! I decided to give it a try and thank to yelp, I found out I needed to make reservations or else you're probably not getting in :P Been coming here since just because he is that good! Usually, its the same story for me too when i come here, I get a haircut because I have a date or need to impress somebody and NEVER has Gary failed me!! Always friendly and welcoming too! Gary is fantastic. Was looking for a reasonably priced but also well done haircut. Found him on this site and its been great. Been going to him for the past 8 months. He is an expert in his field, is extremely nice and its obvious he enjoys it. PERFECT If you are looking for a middle of the road-priced haircut, and efficient., as in you never wait and is exactly on time for the scheduled appointment, then this is the place for you. I dont understand why someone would want to save $6 going to a supercut-type place when you can get a Salon-type haircut, all while supporting your locally owned business without the hassle and expense. I have been getting my haircut by Gary for a few months, and I always leave satisfied. I had bad experiences with barbers when I was a kid, especially the one-cut barbers. Gary is definitely no one-cut barber. Gary is super friendly and puts you at ease in the chair. Asks you what you want and quickly executes a fine haircut. Every time I have called to get an appointment, he has been good to go and usually get a cut within a couple of days. Other places I gotta book weeks ahead Not to mention that his prices are very reasonable (other barbershops in the city, haircuts cost upwards of $40-50). I've been to many different barbershops all over the city and unfortunately I found something that I didn't quite like (such as the haircut wasn't exactly what I wanted or the level of service was unsatisfactory). I finally decided to try Gary & Leeza's and let me tell you guys...I think I've found the spot. Gary is a professional and a great conversationalist. First time I went I showed him a picture of the kind of cut I wanted and it cam out great! exactly what I wanted. Now granted, there are other places in S.F. that can produce similar results BUT only if you want to pay an arm and a leg! This place is reasonably priced for a great result. I don't do a lot of reviews for places, in fact, this is only my second review. I usually find it troublesome to leave some type of review even though a few words could help. But this places is just that great. Just had my third appointment with Gary and I plan to keep it going. If you're looking for a great barber then look no further.
