I had a great experience with Ink & Dagger. Everything from the promptness of answering emails and texts, to just how nice they were. They worked with me on time and day, and it was really easy to set up an appointment. They are using technology really well when it comes to communications, paying and check in. Everything was super simple. I had a very basic word tattoo done, and it turned out exactly the way I had hoped it would. Erik was my artist and he said something that really stuck with me. When it was over he thanked me twice, saying, "Thank you for letting me do this." I know it's something simple but it hit home. I had been bouncing around a nebulous idea in my head for a couple of weeks about a tattoo I wanted honoring the Buddhist Parable of 2 arrows. On a whim after work one Tuesday I swung by Ink and Dagger and walked right in. I hadn't been there before but I'd heard good things. Mind you, this is my first tattoo in almost 35 years. I had 3 done back in the late 80's when I was in the Marine Corps. I walked in and everyone in the shop was friendly, polite, welcoming and professional. I was made to feel at ease immediately. The shop was immaculately clean and very comfortable. I was highly impressed! The staff introduced me to Lilith Jacobs and she sat down with me as I explained the concept and what I was envisioning. She listened patiently, asked some questions and immediately was on board. She showed me the concept that she envisioned and I immediately knew I had come to the right place! Lilith is polite, friendly and a consummate professional. She got me in her chair and a hour and a half later I was super stoked by the results! I couldn't have been happier! I got one back in may in memory of my father, then today I got one for my mother (who is living) to show our love for Disney and our bond. Got my first tattoo done here by Matt Brumelow and I am very happy with the result and the entire process. The price was more than appropriate for the size and quality of the tattoo, too. - Made an initial appointment after sending some ideas to the studio. I am very glad that Matt decided to work with me at that point. - Discussed ideas and possible realizations with Matt during that appointment and converged on something that I thought was a great representation of what I wanted. - They even rescheduled me without any problem after I had to start taking antibiotics one day before the tattoo was scheduled. - Matt had worked out the agreed upon motive in great detail and I was really blown away and convinced by the final result. It took about 2.5 h to do the full thing in one session. Felt in good hands the whole time and was distracted from the painful parts with good conversation. - Got good explanations and guidelines on how to care for the tattoo after the fact. Based on the already stellar reviews for this place, I submitted an application for my first tattoo. Craig Brock and I had a phone consultation (covid) and he talked me through the specifics. I mailed him some ideas and Pinterest pins, but was still sooo nervous about not seeing the actual design until the day of the appointment (!!) But really I had nothing to worry about. Craig is a great artist and helped my idea come to life in a beautiful way. My tattoo is more beautiful than I could have imagined. Additionally, the covid safety and sanitization at this place is top notch, beyond compare (now that I've had my phone sanitized, why doesn't everywhere do this!? so smart). While I was actually getting the ink done, Craig was gentle, accommodating, funny, and interesting. That being said, I believe Russ and the crew at Ink and Dagger have one of the most concise booking practices, excellent communication and overall one of the cleanest well executed shops I've ever visited. What a waste of your time & energy. These guys may be the number one waste of your time, money & efforts. First, they want you to fill out an application (as if it's a job offer). Then after you spend your own precious time trying to get a tattoo, you end up being rejected by these so called artisans. I was ready to spend upwards of $1200 on a 6 hr tattoo plus a $200-300 tip if it met all expectations, but these guys passed around my project like a hot potato tournament & after 3+ weeks of making me wait & passing me to the next artist, all they could say was sorry. Well sorry Ink & Dagger, our motorcycle & trucker's club of hundreds of guys & gals north of y'all was looking for the perfect studio & you failed to rise up to the occasion. This shop was having a "Tribute to Tradition," where they were doing traditional American tattoos for $50. Normally if you told me there was a "sale" on tattoos, I'd say run away, but when I heard this shop was doing it (I've seen their work) I couldn't wait. I just got a pair of vintage sparrows to commemorate my upcoming wedding. They were done by Russ Abbott (owner) and could not be happier. The colors and blending are gorgeous, and he's obviously a great and talented artist. The shop itself is extremely clean and professional, but also fun and laid-back at the same time. Who else has MAN DAY?! Russ Abbott--the man, the myth, the legend, has just continued to amaze me. His swag, his shoppe's style, the vibe from the place is just so so positive and uplifting. I went to Ink and Dagger on a rainy summer's afternoon to check the place out and get a feel. After spending days on end researching artistes, I fell in love with Russ Abbott's work. I had pictures in mind, and he was cool enough to let me pull them up on the computer there. Very cool of him! I was really disheartened though, when he said that he didn't have time to work on me. I didn't even care if I had to wait months, but I was just shut down like POW! He directed me to Kurt, who was also an excellent artiste whose work I also loved, so I didn't feel like I got second string. However; I just wonder what's the point of featuring this famous artiste if newbies can't be inked by the person that they want? I totally understand being busy and all, but I want Mr. Abbott in all of his glory, if I want Mr. Abbott, feel me? In any case, neither of them did my work bc Man Day was first available, so Mr. Ron (DeCosta) Henry Wells will forever be etched in my heart as the bearded beauty that took my virginity. I love you Ron, and thank you for making my Man Day one to remember. Still kinda salty about feeling like I was not worthy to be Inked by Russ, but I guess he has to do what works for him. Just a little update. Two more tattoos later, Ink & Dagger is still the only place to go for any sort of tattoo work in my book. Or you can try and see the artists at various tattoo conventions if you don't live in the area. I got a small tattoo done by Kurt on Man Day, which was a really fun event. Kurt was nice, and I really like a lot of stuff from his portfolio. I got a third much larger meaningful tattoo done by Russ at the Boston Tattoo Convention as that's where I live. I hope to get additional work done around that tattoo sometime sometime when I'm in Atlanta, and eventually fill in the other arm a little more too. I went in with my boyfriend so he could schedule his consultation appointment and had my own drawn out design to see if they would accept me as a walk in to get script on my thigh, and they did! Tripps was the artist I had in mind, because he had some awesome script posted on instagram, and he was the one to tattoo me. He was super sweet, and payed attention to all my picky details . He exceeded all expectations I had in mind, and this was my first tattoo so I was pretty nervous. There's a reason this shop is widely regarded as the best around ATL - great vibe and talented artists who have an obvious comradery and love for what they do. I've done two sessions with Kevin and the dude is incredible and I've had a blast chatting with the other artists while he worked. While Kevin has worked on my arm, I've seen quite a few other customers leave stoked with awesome art from Brittney and Killian, among others. Def worth the drive out to Roswell over some of the in town shops. Regarding the art, after a convo with Kevin, he knew exactly what I wanted. In fact, he made an amazing suggestion to have the forward hand holding the Run The Jewels pistol, thus making the tattoo better match the band art, while retaining the look of Praying Hands. I went to this shop to get a tattoo on my tricep. I presented the design to the artist, he said he could do it. The design included fine lines and words (which was a majority of the tattoo - see attached image). On the day of the tattoo, he draws the stencil, except the stencil excluded 90% of the design that I gave him. When I asked him why most of the words were not included in the stencil, he said that he cannot tattoo them because they were too small to fit the surface area. Because he could not do the tattoo I asked for (and was promised with), I suggested that I reschedule and get something else (using the same security deposit)... unfortunately, the shop said that they could not do that because "the artist used his time drawing the tattoo" and they refused to refund my security deposit.... Well, the shop wasted my time because they promised to tattoo something that they could not do..... I do not blame the artist because it was a detailed design. He is talented and a lot of the artists in this shop are, but who ever is running this place has horrible business practices. You don't penalize the customer because an artist misjudged what they could do (especially for something so permanent). I worked with Izzy for almost six months to do a back piece of a phoenix, as if it were coming out of my back. I was very specific with how I wanted it to look, the feathers, the colors. Initially, I wanted the bottom of the bird to still be ashy and dark, becoming more vibrant and red and orange at the the top, which he talked me out of because he said it would "look unfinished". The first time I showed up for the phoenix, his drawing was not only massive, taking up almost every square inch of my back, but also not at all what I wanted- the bird was on its side, not rising out of my back. I asked what would happen if I didn't get a tattoo that day. I'd lose my deposit. Six hundred bucks! So, I figured, I'm here, let's do something. I said I love orchids, and requested red orchids on my left forearm. Well, that's not what I got, although what Izzy tattooed is beautiful, and people LOVE it. But, that's not the point. I returned for another consult, two days before the second scheduling of the phoenix. Again, going over the appearance, size, etc.. I showed up for my appointment and had to wait for TWO HOURS because Izzy had still not drawn anything up. After he drew it up, we went over all of the elements that would be added/subtracted. I asked him if he'd like the reference photo of the feathers open on my phone, and he assured me with a "I know what I'm doing." The problem though, is that I didn't know what he was doing. After 6 hours of probably the most pain a tattoo has ever given me, he tattooed an owl. AN OWL!! I was shocked, and numb, and wondering what just happened. I made the mistake of not making a scene right then. I paid. I went home. I thought about the fact that it's permanent, and what's done is done. And maybe there was a way to fix it. I went to get re-bandaged two days later, and talked directly to Izzy about why I didn't get what I asked for, to which he informed me then that my idea "wasn't up to shop standards." The business manager Matt Fontana set up a meeting with Izzy and Russ Abbott to come up with a cover-up. Russ worked on some things. I gave input. They said I'd have a drawing in 3 days. It took two weeks, and was barely different than what Russ sketched out that day, which I had already mentioned was getting too dark and ominous, and it was in no way tattoo quality. I emailed my displeasure, suggesting another resolution, and then I thought "why am I still trying to work with these people?" I requested a refund. I was denied. I went through my bank for a partial refund, and was denied. Matt Fontana suggested that I saw the stencil, and should have known it was what I was going to end up with, as if to say "You never should have listened to a word Izzy told you. He's a tracer." The shop, and Izzy, knew how much the tattoo meant to me, and how long I waited to complete it (it was a cover-up itself). Ten years I waited to find an artist who I thought would do an amazing job. For me. Izzy let me down, and the shop doesn't see a problem with it. I don't think Russ even reviewed the "sketch" before it went out to me. Bottom-line: Tattoos should not be at the sole discretion of the artist. I feel like that should go without saying. read more

Instead of updating my review for a third time, I figured I'd just start fresh. Why not? I've been to Ink & Dagger probably half a dozen times since January. I've been tattooed by the master himself, Russ Abbott, his (formerly) newest resident Kurt Fagerland, and a guest artist from Wisconsin. All of my experiences have been fabulous. The staff is laid back and easy to talk to. There have been times where I've gone in to ask a simple question and spent the next hour just chatting with whoever's around. I've recommended several friends and they've found the same positive experience. The whole crew is amazing and I love them all to pieces. That's high praise as I tend to be a raging misanthropist. ;) The work itself is flawless. I get so many compliments on my work that has come from them. It often starts with something along the lines of "I don't usually like tattoos, but...". I think it's high praise if you can get someone who doesn't normally find it appealing to speak up. They are on the pricey side, but it's totally worth it. I feel like I get my money's worth every time I leave the shop. With some shops, it can feel like you got taken for a ride, but not here. Awesome shop, everyone here are professionals, nice, helpful, & friendly. My consult with Clint went smooth and we went over ideas and placement of my custom piece from him. I had to reschedule my appointment with him because of personal reasons and he was very understanding and was quick to get back to me about a new appointment date. The day of the tattoo, it was pretty awesome. I had chats with pretty much everyone that worked there that day and everyone is really easy-going and nice. The tattoo went smoothly, Clint was a gentleman & scholar. He checked up on me every so often and we took a few breaks for me to stretch my legs out. The one thing I love about Ink & Dagger Tattoo compared to all the other shops I've been to...They have a lot of different drinks and candies to get your blood sugar up just in case you're worn out. I want to say it was about 6-7 hours of solid tattooing in one shot. Clint did an amazing traditional piece on the back of my calf... I'm getting so many compliments from it already about the detail put into it. I really appreciated the way Clint went above and beyond on making sure all the lines, colors, details were perfect. Brandon David is amazing. I was kinda nervous and didn't know what to expect since it was going to be my first tattoo. Instead of just rushing me in, Brandon looked at my design and offered suggestions on how to make it look better as a tattoo. He seemed genuinely interested in giving me something that we could both be proud of. He was super chill and easy to talk to. Very approachable and laid-back guy. With the addition of his suggestions my tattoo turned out incredible. Crisp line work and colors turned out exactly like I wanted. DAGGERED..., But no ink. Two months ago I placed a deposit down, $200 for a tattoo, which I drew, but gave the artist (to not be named for publicity) ... I did give him explicit details of what I was looking for, but because he didn't notate it .. I, being the customer, was wrong. And this is the level of customer service we get today. $200 depo was In essence whipped away because life happens and I missed my start time by two hours. I was informed that even if I wanted to get anything tattooed today, I'd have to pay in full for what I wanted and the $200 no matter how long the work would take ... would not be put against the time ... because I was late. Now mind you, had I been at ink and dagger @ noon ... if I wanted to change what I wanted (which was just three little roses, in which he, the artist, suggested NOT doing, because they would be "to small" .. That would have been doable. But because I was late ... The depo was void and it was either his design, which wasn't even what we discussed. And Admittedly, I'm not a tattoo artist, but I do know a few and I've never heard anyone say they couldn't do it, but rather, you lose detail, or it has to be simple ... which is what I asked for; "three simple roses". I'm appalled at the sense that this artist will walk away $200 unearned dollars, for art that wasn't even close to what I wanted. Then to be told that missing my start time forfeits my depo. for art, even if I had been on time ...I would not have approved. I get that most people go to shops and just rando pick shit off the wall, or tell the artist just to do "whatever", but as an established artist and man who doesn't put ink on his body without reason ... I think I know better than a kid who sat on my design for two months and photoshopped a concept in hopes of be like "HELL YEAH" ... Sorry Ink and Dagger .. I'm not the one. I am a little worried. I picked this place after reading all these wonderful reviews and they didn't mention anything about free touchups. The place is clean. Very clean. Clean smelling too. Interesting artwork on the wall that you can focus on to keep your mind off the pain. Russ is nice, very professional, but not very chatty, in fact the entire staff, almost to the point of formal. It's a tattoo parlour, not a formal inquisition. Sometimes a conversation here and there makes all the difference. He didn't even ask me how I heard about them, like he wasn't the least bit curious. I just kept thinking I may be the only representative of that demographic - female african american - to walk in here. But I will be back. And I might be bringing some more representatives of that demographic! read more
