For the price of the rooms it's overpriced. Fireplaces are not able to use all your lawn. It was very dirty and dusty in the room. It happened to be raining the day that we stayed and there is no covered area so you're checking in a lot of water and dirt from your shoes. My husband and I recently stayed here. We've lived and traveled all over the world and this hotel is a new very favorite spot!! If you're looking for a constant luxury feel... go downtown bc this isn't your spot. However, if you're looking for peace and quiet, an abundance of charm, gorgeous walking trails, easy access to drinks and games, and an epically fun fireplace in the room... this place is absolute perfection!! This inn sort of felt like a low country cabin. The gardens are beautiful... lots of hammocks and chairs fill the property to sit and enjoy the view. We truly adored this spot and will be back! If you're looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of CHS, this is a GREAT choice! The free buffet was the best one I've ever seen. Cheese grits were amazing. As an added plus, the massive windows that fill the inn make you feel like you're always enjoying the surroundings. Brilliant architecture. Anyone that has left negative reviews is just a Karen in my opinion. The basic room is gorgeous and spacious(for a hotel room!). VERY clean. The products provided are local. Really liked the open yet private concept of the bathroom. Perfect for a couple(but probably not ideal for a family, etc.) They even provide Middleton Blend K-cups. Plenty of space to put your open luggage. Pool towels provided! Happy hour was very nice. Great drinks and the live music was wonderful. Charcuterie provided was simple but good. Try the pickled okra and pimento cheese! Breakfast was very good. Cheesy grits, real bacon and pure maple syrup jars were my highlights. We thoroughly enjoyed walking the grounds and felt the walk to the restaurant was not "long". I wouldn't wear heels on the walk but the inn specifically states this(as it seems others have had an issue). We stayed here for two nights to get away from the hustle and bustle. It's a dump. Unkempt. Windows won't close all the way. Musty. Found a 1" layer of dust on the AC intake. Cobwebs everywhere. Spiders and millipeeds everywhere. Expect to wake up with cockroaches crawling on you multiple times through the night. Instead of leaving a tip, I left a note with a 3 dead roaches on it with the words "Try harder." We stayed here during our visit to Charleston recently and this place ended up being cheaper than staying in downtown. It's about a 30 min drive from downtown and an easy one so not bad if you want a quiet stay. Middleton place is gorgeous but more like landscaping rather than botanical gardens. Lots of flora but not a ton of flowers. You get free breakfast and free passes to Middleton place with your stay so it's nothing much for you to worry about The breakfast is actually good! Probably one of the best complimentary breakfast buffets I've seen. They have access for kayaking, they have horseback riding and more The grounds are huge & we didn't see it all. They also have some outdoor games & a restaurant where they give you discounts during happy hour and a complimentary night cap. We didn't partake bc we went to downtown but it sounded cool. The room was great. It's so unique looking and so much light! One of our windows was broken but the temperature stayed fine & we were high up so nothing crawled in the shower space is really big but hard to get into because it has a wide ledge so be careful. MUST have a car to get around very large property as staff do not assist with drive or bags. Had problems getting basic amenities (such as washcloths) and had problems with safe in room. This is a great place to stay if you're looking for something a little quieter and you enjoy natural beauty and history. My husband and I both enjoyed Middleton plantation, the restaurant, and the views. The lounge area is nice and the staff is fairly friendly. I thought the room was beautiful, floor to ceiling windows and a waterfall showerhead. Looks like it's had some updates since previous reviews as it did not seem outdated to me. Unfortunately the pool was closed while we were there which really put a damper on the trip but it was due to unforseen circumstances and the staff was super apologetic. If the pool was open this might've been a perfect trip. Breakfast was fabulous, there are great walking trails, and there's lots of animals to see! read more

Where to begin? First, I gave two stars because of the beauty and history that Middleton offers but honestly that's about it... the rest is about one star worthy. Also, we are not the complaining type but after this experience want to warn people of our experience. We received a gift certificate to stay at the Inn. Instead of taking our credit card for incidentals only (as most places do and then reimburse upon checkout), when we checked in they charged us for the two night stay. We questioned this and they reassured us that we would be reimbursed upon checkout. When we checked out, they charged us for ANOTHER night. Y'all, that is $900 in charged and we had a gift certificate that covered the whole stay! We called three times and have been repeatedly told they "would take care of it". Only one person apologized and acknowledged the mistakes they made and we were even hung up on by one of the hotel staff on one of the calls. One person just kept saying, just call your credit card company and they will sort it out. It is now 4 days after checkout and we still haven't been completely reimbursed. Aside from the horrible customer service, the room was musty and needed to be aired out. There were some little bits of pollen and debris on the towels that we picked off. It looked like someone dropped the towels outside when they were changing them out and just never shook them off. The tv is small in the room but the ambiance is supposed to look quaint and provide relaxation. They are doing some remodels and updates so hopefully that will help. The Pool was disgusting and didn't look like anyone had kept up with it all winter but it should be looking good by April in South Carolina because often times it is plenty warm to sit by the Pool. Breakfast is ok. Pretty standard for a hotel stay. Grits, eggs, bacon, etc. In my opinion , if coming to visit, stay somewhere else and do a tour of the gardens separately. read more

I found a Groupon deal for this romantic place. Between the pics online and the ok reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor, I figured let's give it a try when we are in the Charleston area. Check in was smooth. Headed to the room, maybe it's the time of year, maybe the weather, or maybe most of the photos on the website for the inn were taken when it was built. Nothing great at all and the place looked run down. We sent pics and even movies to friends who asked where the hell we were staying. One asked if we were on the set for a horror movie. Now into the room, the smell hit us. There is a fireplace with a tag that says out of service. I doubt it's been used for months. The entire room smelled overwhelmingly like a bonfire or fireplace but we can live with that. The bathroom is strange the combination, the shower and tub was like nothing I had ever seen before. I wouldn't consider it a tub nor would I ever consider laying in there and using it. We went to check out the happy hour, its essentially a small bar and the girl working was very nice and happy to answer any questions. We walked down to the pool area and and there were a few other couples which we chatted with. We made dinner reservations as we were not going to drive from the property. Some issues with the room, we had to sweep a spider down the drain when showering. We took a walk over to the gardens which were nice and walking around the river and checking out the live oak trees was neat. I couldn't believe all the alligators laying near the water either. Walking back after dinner was definitely spooky as the path was poorly lit and uneven ground. Thank God we had cell phones with good lights. I did read a review where they said each room had a flashlight which we were never able to find. Waking up in the morning we found a very long millipede type of creature scurrying across the bathroom floor take a look at the picture I posted. I really wanted to love this stay and facility but it wasn't for us. I have stayed in cabins tents and done a lot of camping this place is not romantic and isn't a resort. read more

I really enjoyed spending Thanksgiving here this year. It has a great location and all the staff were friendly and professional. The Inn itself was wonderful as I really enjoyed its architecture and thought it to be very comfortable. It was wonderful to wake up and take a stroll around its grounds and enjoy the beautiful environment. It was so peaceful and listening to the birds in the early morning hours was really relaxing. Then to visit the plantation gardens which is just a quick walk from the Inn was special. Enjoyed the breakfasts, afternoon cocktails, and of course the Thanksgiving meal on the plantation. I have stayed at some really nice places in Charleston, but this was my first visit to The Inn At Middleton Place. I gave this place 5 stars for many reasons, but I will warn you that this place is not for everyone. And, even though I loved it, it will not always be my first choice because it is in a dark & secluded area.... and it is a bit of a drive to get to the beach or downtown Charleston from here. But overall, I was very pleased with my experience. I booked online well in advance of my visit, and was a little anxious to make sure the reservation was secured. Shortly after booking, I got a confirmation email with information about the Inn and the activities available there. About a week before our visit, I got another confirmation email from them. So, when we checked in, they had our room ready for us. They also had a gift bag waiting for our dog Izzy. It contained a little chew toy, a bag of what looks & smells like handmade carob dog treats, a travel water bowl, and wipe ups. The Inn was built in the 80s but the decor and the architecture do not scream 80s to me. I love the tall concrete & glass buildings covered with vines to give it a sort of retro look. The rooms are a mix of rustic with sort of modern bathrooms. It sounds a little odd but it works. I love all the windows with wooden shutters. The room also had a fireplace in it which would be great for a winter visit. The bathtub/shower is huge - but warning to those with mobility issues, it is not going to be easy for you to get in or out of the tub. While it is certainly rustic, I thought that the only really dated thing about the room was the tv - but I certainly wasn't going to be sitting around watching tv, so who cares! As for service, they really have thought of all the details to make sure your stay is pleasant. In addition to providing plenty of bikes for the guests to use, they also have umbrellas outside of each room and outside of the Lakehouse in case you need them. The employees we encountered were all very personable and helpful. We loved Ms. Orcelea (sp?) at the Lakehouse - she was so friendly and helpful when we went to breakfast. (She said she's been there 19 years, and I hope she's still there when we go back!) And Mark in the Lodge was absolutely wonderful. He was helpful, friendly, entertaining, and was like our own private conceierge when we asked for suggestions about local businesses. We really enjoyed talking with him during the manager's reception and at other times when we went back to the lodge for food or beverages. Because we were in town for a wedding and had lots of wedding-related events planned elsewhere, we did not have a chance to dine at the restaurant at Middleton Plantation. On my next visit I hope to do so. The "free" breakfast they serve at the Lakehouse consisted of breads, muffins, fruit, yogurt, granola, juice, coffee and tea. But they also offer eggs, grits, potatoes, and breakfast meats cooked to order a la carte. If you happen to be on the grounds at lunch time or in the evening and you want a light bite - they serve sandwiches and wraps over at the Lodge. Unfortuantely, the offerings are a bit limited, but it is nice to not have to leave the property to find a quick & casual bite to eat. (The restaurant over at the Plantation is apparently upscale/pricey.) All in all, I was extremely pleased with our visit and look forward to going back for a future visit. read more

Words don't even do the grounds justice. It was so peaceful, and there were so many nooks and crannies that were so breathtaking. Walking over to the Stableyards we were met by all sorts of animals and the staff was happy to answer our questions and provide us info on them. We booked a room for three adults and were told that there would be an airmattress for the third adult. What we got was a child's size airmattress. The third person is short- about 5'3" tall, yet her feet hung over the end of the mattress. Bad enough, but the mattress had a slow leak, by 4 am she was sleeping on the hard floor. They also failed to pad the airmattress to insulate it, and it was cold on that floor. We asked for a larger room with three beds, or a second room, which I even offered to pay for. But they were full, and we were stuck. The next morning they gave us a 20% discount on the room. That was not adequate given that 1/3 of our party did not have a bed as promised. Aside from this major disappointment, the wine and cheese hour was about like what you get at a highway motel such as Best Western. Very substandard for this price point. Finally, in the restaurant, they kept my credit card and I didn't realize it until a day later when we were 100 miles away. I called the office to get some help on this, and they said the restaurant is separate. No help from Middleton Place on that either. We are frequent travelers and pretty flexible on quality of accommodation, but at this price we expected them to cover the bases far better than they did. The rooms are a long walk or short drive to the restaurant, and the parks are a drive away, so there's no benefit gained by staying on site. Would not consider ever staying again. read more

Dirty, smelly, creepy. Beware! 4-star hotel prices for roadside motel accommodation. I called to inquire about a charge that showed up on my credit card statement after I had already prepaid a whopping $430+ for a one-night stay. The "manager" was flippant, sarcastic, dismissive and downright unprofessional. My husband and I wanted a quiet weekend to disconnect. We booked a Riverside room at the Inn. We were excited to be able to access the Middleton Place Plantation and Gardens and we also booked dinner at the Middleton Place Restaurant. When we booked the room we were informed that most of the amenities at the Inn were closed; the Lakehouse and Lodge. When we arrived we figured out this was due to the beginning of renovations going on. Since we wouldn't have access to the Lodge specifically, we were told a complimentary bottle of wine and cheese platter would be in our room. When we arrived in our room, we were very disappointed. Not only was there no bottle of wine or cheeses there but the room was very old. Ripped bed quilt, stained ceilings, and moldy bathroom. Our room was on the second floor and did not have the wooden blinds that you see on the website. No biggie, but the glass windows were very dirty. The bathroom was extremely dated. Toilet was very low to the floor. Sink area did not seem very clean. When my husband called to inquire about the wine and cheese; the receptionist had no idea. She asked him to call someone at the Lodge. We left a message and decided to head over to the Middleton Plantation and Gardens. The gardens were exquisite! Absolutely gorgeous. There was a quick path to walk from the Inn to the Gardens during the day. Registration suggested we go straight to the Visitor Center to reserve a time for the House tour. Everything about the plantation and gardens was worth it. A must see if you're in the area. While enjoying the gardens we heard back from a manager at the Lodge who informed us that due to it being closed, we were unable to have a cheese platter but they could give us a bottle of champagne. When we returned to our room that evening, the bottle was nicely chilling in the fridge. She was very apologetic. We enjoyed an excellent dinner at the Middleton Place Restaurant. Walking the path at night though, was extremely dark and challenging. No lighting. Bring a flashlight! In our room, that evening we did enjoy a nice wood burning fire, although the logs were very damp and took a while to burn. The room was very quiet. Unfortunately, when we woke up the next morning, the ceiling was leaking. When taking a shower it was very old and the fixture hung low. I have no idea what tall people do to shower. The shower also had a very wide ledge, which was dangerous for entering and exiting. Before leaving we strolled over to the Lakehouse where there was a "grab and go'' breakfast. Due to COVID- 19 we were told this was the only breakfast option. This was the most ridiculous breakfast I had ever seen. They were charging people for microwaved JimmyDean sandwiches and toasted bagels. Thankfully, we were served by the same nice manager who sent us the champagne and she comped us our breakfast. When we checked out I informed registration of the room leak, she seemed shocked and very apologetic. Frankly, based on our experience, the rate was excessive. I wanted to love it, being a part of nature was wonderful and the staff was kind, but the room was a huge disappointment. Go to the restaurant and gardens. read more

We stayed here for two nights for my cousin's wedding and absolutely adored our time here. The layers of history to peel back are inconceivably many. The significance of the gardens and their upkeep relative to the formation of our country, the Middleton connection to our constitition, international affairs, and the concession during the civil war make the gardens even more meaningful. Without knowing any of the background, you could admire the landscaping on it's own, although understanding the ties to french landscaping help contextualize the right angles, the purposeful hedging and aesthetically pleasing placement of bird baths and statues. We did the garden tour to learn of the history and upkeep of the gardens, we did the slavery tour to understand how enslaved africans played a pivotal role in this- the juxtaposition of the ugliness of slavery but the beauty they created is something causing pause. Everything here makes you think while also giving you the respite to enjoy nature. Such a breathtaking venue for a wedding. See the pictures I will post! read more

I'm full of mixed emotions about this place but mostly disappointed first things first if you don't have mosquito spray don't bother going there, they are on the property of Middleton place and you receive free day passes to explore the gardens and the house which is absolutely gorgeous and a great experience but I would have honestly rather payed the £29 for the pass and stayed elsewhere, if your gonna enjoy your nights sleep bring earplugs because you can hear everything from the upstairs and neighbouring rooms, if you have a lot of luggage get ready for a lot of stairs, not to mention the WiFi is the poorest connection I have ever came across that's if it even lets you connect,but that's okay il just put on the tv instead?! Right well if you have binoculars to see it from your bed that's fine BUT IT CAN ONLY GET BETTER RIGHT? ahahaha N O P E I have never seen so many insects in one area in my life I was disgusted with the amount of dead/alive insects in the bathroom, the place hasn't had a good clean in a while and definitely needs an update inside and outside, it's not well light up at all and my elderly father nearly took a bad fall walking the paths on the grounds of the property not to mention who in the hell wants to go kayaking with that many gators in the water!?!?! They are the nicest most thoughtful business I have ever dealt with and what you get with your stay (after hours access to the plantation and more during non-COVID times) makes the price of the hotel per night so worth it. We have stayed here 6 times now and it such a lovely place. I left a review a few years ago being nit picky about the bathrooms being a bit outdated but you know what? These rooms are so unique and different it doesn't matter. It's just a wonderful place to stay. I casually mentioned a special event as I was making our arrangements for the weekend and they made sure we were greeted with something special when we got In our room. Ok. So I booked this hotel because a friend is getting married on the property. The rooms on the main part of the property seem beautiful but the ones off property are disgusting. I had a reservation for one of the rooms at the DAYTON and the room smelled like mold and mildew, the walls looked like they had water damage and the room seemed like it had been vacant for years. It is SO outdated. As we walked up, the cleaners had left the cleaning supplies outside of the room on the gravel floor. I would NOT recommend staying here unless it's on the main part. I was so excited to drive through the secured gate and see the equestrian area with so many beautiful horses! When I pulled up to our building, I was still so excited as the exterior looked very cool with a rustic/modern feel.....and then I went inside my room....picture a balloon full of air deflating before your very eyes....that's what I felt like. There's SO much potential for these rooms to be uber chic but sadly it's more campy/lodgy than I was expecting or wanting. It was very dated but comfortable and clean. It doesn't 'go' with the rest of the resort....the common areas appear newly renovated and modern and as I said above, the grounds are impeccable. Perhaps a reno is in the works?... I think it's a great place for a long weekend stay with family since they give you a print out of all the acitivies going on throughout the day. If you're looking for a romantic weekend getaway, I'd drive a litte further into downtown Charleston. read more

I like the architecture of the hotel and look and feel of everything. Everything here is so peaceful and relaxing and feels like an entirely different experience from everything else in Charleston. There is so much history and so much to see and do while visiting. The staff here is great and does everything necessary to make sure that you have a great visit. My mom and I just had a wonderful stay at Middleton Place Inn. It's hard to accurately sum up its vibe in a single word. Yes, it's a bit rustic because you're walking around on dirt paths in a very woodsy setting. But it's also so serene and beautiful. But it's refined rustic. The exterior of the buildings reminded me of Frank Loyd Wright and mission-style furniture--very geometric and designed to be in tune with nature. Inside the rooms though, it felt more like a more like a Scandinavian retreat,with all of the light-colored cypress wood and stone bathroom with European-style tub. The floor-to-ceiling windows are gorgeous and I love that you could open just the top shutters to maintain some privacy at night. We stayed in a Grand River View room on the ground floor. If you're coming with kids, the Grand rooms offer the advantage of a couch with pull-out sofa bed and DVD player. Otherwise, it is nice to have the sofa and sitting area in the evening. As far as the amenities in the room, the bed was comfortable with lightweight linens, appropriate for summer. It was great to have a small refrigerator to store drinks in, as well as a charging station to plug into on the desk (especially since I had forgotten the wall part of my charger). But I was surprised the room didn't have a hair dryer anywhere I could find. I thought the bathroom was nice and loved the softer-than-hotel-normal towels. However, I wasn't a fan of the 150 gallon European tub. I think they would be smart to update that. I found it to be all-round uncomfortable--sitting on grouted tile instead if a smooth surface, the hard lines of the shape and the fact that it's so big that after 20 minutes, it still only had about 2 inches of water in it. Contrary to what some reviewers have said though, the tubs aren't filled with mold. As explained on the website, they used black grout, which must have been a trend at the time because I have seen it in a NYC hotel as well. But the coloring is uneven, which I think causes the "mold" confusion. It has faded in some spots over the years while other areas have obviously been retouched. The staff we talked to at check-in, the Lodge and the Lake House were all very gracious. The complimentary Healthy Start breakfast was terrific too--a wide variety of cereals, muffins, yogurt and toppings to choose from. They also have brochures for the farms they get everything from. In case you want to go tour them. But the best part of all is probably the value--with the included admission to the grounds and house both days included in the room price. We literally spent 6 hours touring the place on Sunday and getting a bite to eat in the Garden Market, and we didn't quite see everything or do any of the free outdoor tours or any of the extra activities like horseback riding or kayaking. So you really could spend several days there making the most of it. Bottom line--if you're looking to stay at the usual southern/Charleston-style inn, you'll probably be disappointed. But the Inn at Middleton Place has many unique charms if it's own and I definitely plan to return. read more

Turning on the tap, flushing the toilet, or using the shower fills the room with the stench of rotten eggs. When I called the desk about this at 8pm I was told they would send someone right over to check it out. At 11pm, I was told this is normal for well water and I should just let the water run to get rid of the smell (while making the whole room stink). I've used water from hundreds of wells over the past 50 years. Although some have had high sulfur content, none have been anything like this. The stench is almost bad enough to make me vomit. Unbelievable for a room costing me almost $200. If it wasn't almost midnight I would ask for my money back and go somewhere else. Update: in the morning, the hydrogen sulfide smell coming from the water was even worse than it had been the night before. Just taking a short shower gave me a bad headache. On a positive note, the oatmeal at the complementary breakfast buffet was really good and the manager comp'ed my stay when I checked out. Nonetheless, this is an experience I rather would have missed; I will not be back.Interestingly, the tap water at the Middleton Place Plantation next door is great. read more

This place was horrible from beginning to end. Several days prior to my arrival, I called to confirm my reservation. I was rudely met by Debbie on the line, who was one of the most hateful guest services attendants who I've ever spoken to. Furthermore, she confirmed that rooms were available but refused to book my reservation, stating that I should wait until the morning. I travel 3-4 times per month, and I have never encountered such a bizarre issue. Upon arrival, the first services attendants were stale and unapproachable. The attendant provided mediocre information on the property, but did not go out of his way to be helpful in any way. Arriving to the room, it was old, run down, and dirty. The floor had remnants of sand and the carpets were filled with dog hair of past guests. The bathroom was not clean, and the shower had hair of past guests as well. Again, I travel for a living and have never experienced such bad service and accommodations. I will not be back. read more

Experience was mixed. Room and facilities were beautiful. Restaurant delicious. Service poor and handicap accessibility ZERO. We arrived by Uber and cold to walk a block and a half through next train with our luggage. Despite having someone with a chronic knee problem, no golf cart was made available. At various times throughout the stay when we asked for assistance with a golf cart, it was a big deal. There was a nice cocktail lounge and the hostess was great but the front desk did a poor job of explaining the hours and the amenities. At night, virtually no lighting made it very difficult to walk from the restaurant back to the room-- complete darkness! read more

The rooms here are very cozy! Was a romantic place to stay. Our stay included a pass to Magnolia Plantation, it was raining when we stayed so did not get to enjoy that. Loved ALL the windows that the room had. The room also had a fire place and wood so we enjoyed a fire while visiting. They also had a nice building that had board games, fireplace and bar that had plates of snacks. The bar also had good happy hour prices on drinks. The free breakfast was pretty limited on choices but was still tasty and the view was gorgeous with all the windows. The room had a large bathtub and I was really excited to relax in it however the water was no longer warm by the time it filled up. Otherwise a great stay. read more

The grounds are lovely, but our room at the inn was absolutely filthy, the bed uncomfortable, and there was no resolution or customer service from the front desk employees. We travelled across the country and arrived near midnight. The disappointing customer service started from The beginning of our arrival, when the receptionist was unable to tell us where we could get food or water in any direction. (Not even water was available at hotel at that hour). But by far the worst part of our experience was our room. The room looked nothing like the one line photos, it was Tiny and the word rustic does not do it justice. It was also absolutely filthy. It was obvious no attempt had ever been made to clean or shake out the rugs or bath mat, and the hard wood floor was filled with rocks and dirt. The moment i stepped out of the shower onto the bath mat my feet were covered in hair and dirt. I swept the room and piled the rugs in the corner and used all of the towels to clean the floor. When I asked for new towels and explained the situation at the front desk there were no apologies. The next day after suffering through an uncomfortable bed and flat pillows we decided to check out early. Again I explained the situation to the front desk and received no apology, just a full bill, nearly 600 dollars for 2 nights. Absolutely atrocious customer service and cleanliness. Room was stupid filthy like it hadn't been cleaned in 3-4 stays used shampoo bottles and pubic hair all over the toilet. We'd been talking about staying here a long time and what an incredible letdown. When i went to the desk the young lady completely blew me off like it was no big deal my room was in said condition. read more

All went well at the pre-wedding food tasting. However, where were the appetizers we tasted? All we saw at the wedding were deviled eggs. Same with the main course. Not enough food was provided and people were just plain hungry. And..the planner was MIA. My son and daughter in law were extremely disappointed. Quaint, romantic ambiance. Complimentary healthy breakfast in the morning and beer and wine in the evening. Plenty of walk and bike paths. We also got entrance to the nearby Middleton Place and the House Museum tour. The room had a nice rustic feel with a wood burning fireplace. Only downside was the water had an odd smell so we avoided drinking it. However, there was complimentary water in the room. read more
