She was really friendly. I enjoyed her class. It started off (on time!) with some warm up moves, then moved to some ab work and stretching, we learned a combo, then closed with a cool down. The music selection was great and so was the pace at which the class was taught. Meg is super encouraging. They have a deal where if you bring a friend to your second class you both get in for free. Mary (tap) is a hoot and for a beginner class it's not just about standing practicing shuffles. We are actually learning choreography and get a nice little work out to boot! And Missy (hip hop)... Wow. Lots of energy and fun. The studio has a nice selection of adult classes available. Just wish they had more than one night if tap so I could get in a couple tap classes a week (my only complaint!).

Not only did I get a great workout in, but I had it with THE Rooted owner, Kristin! Kristin was so welcoming and warm, and she has the loveliest smile! The studio is a perfect size for about 15 people MAX. It shares a door with Market Street Eats, as soon as you come in, keep heading up! I like that Kristin is attentive to her students and makes corrections as needed, to help you reach your full potential. The class price runs on average as the rest of Portland fitness classes. $18/drop-in, or you can do monthly or class passes.

I attend the "yoga beats" class with the instructor Liz (who is amazing and full of energy), she has changed my perspective on yoga and still gives me a real workout. I highly recommend stopping in for a class for any visitors to Portland and Maine residents looking for something new. My daughter loves going to dance and shows me the new moves she's learned on a regular basis. Her teacher is wonderful with the kids and they all get a little parting gift at the end of each class (sticker, small toy, valentines, candy etc..). The show seemed to be dominated by the owner's kids. The first thing I noticed was the room was extremely small with very low ceilings. There was a ton of kids in the class and the floor has a large warp in it. The teacher was extremely enthusiastic but the owner was super pushy and not genuine at all. Meredith and her staff are skilled, sensitive, and fun. Meredith, especially, has an intuitive sense of what the body in front of her needs-the hallmark of a great Pilates teacher. I recommend Springboard to anyone who wants to feel better, move better, or look better. Beginners to advanced, no matter how long-or how little-you've sat on the sofa, there's a class or workout here for everyone. What you won't find is elitism or snobbery-you'll never feel judged or like you're in a competition. On a personal note, I was stricken with stage 3 bladder cancer last year, and struggled to find my way back to health. With patience, steady encouragement, and a ton of kindness, Meredith has overseen my slow and painful return to form. As much as I am grateful for my life, I am grateful to Meredith for helping me return to it.

Dynamics provides two different group classes. An introduction/ beginner class that is 45 minutes long and a regular class for an hour. They have a ton of different classes throughout the day to accommodate people working. The classes usually begin with a warm up and stretching and then they lead into a few different circuit workouts. Every time a go there is always a new work out or a it has been modified so you are not working out the same part of your body. You will do a lot of things using your own body weight which is a lot harder than it seems. The instructors are very nice and will motivate you and not in a condescending way. $7.50 for one class or 6 dollars a class (60 dollars) if you purchase the 10 class pass which is a steal, cash or check only, no cards taken. Bring a water bottle and change of shoes if you can. The first time walking threw the door is the hardest part. Embrace it! They want you to succeed there and so do you.

Every class is different and you won't be bored. The Scarborough location is a little bigger than the Portland location, and from my experience tends to be less crowded. I am a regular at the 6am Tuesday/Thursday class with trainer Jaime, who is kind, motivating, organized and really just all around great! Their website has their schedule with all of the boot camp classes. They rarely cancel unless there are extreme weather conditions. I have noticed that a lot of other gyms/trainers cancel boot camps last-minute so I really appreciate this about Dynamics. They have regular boot camps which last an hour, and basic boot camps which are 45 minutes. Boot camp goes like this: A 10 minute warm up with drills like butt-kicks, lateral squats, skips, and ending with bear-crawls. Dynamic stretch is next followed by resistance band-work to strengthen your butt and hips. Then comes the circuits which work out your whole body and keep your heart-rate elevated. Sometimes there is back and forth partner work, and sometimes stations with TRX, KetlleBells, Medicine Balls, Body Weight, Fitness Bands, etc... Examples include TRX Rows, Push ups, Tricep presses, medicine ball shuffles, kettle bell swings, sprinter sit ups, squat jumps, dead lifts... etc.. You can always modify any exercise. There is usually a finisher which includes something awful like Burpees :) After a quick stretch, you are out the door having accomplished an awesome work out! There is water for sale for $1 but I always bring a full water bottle and towel. You can go at your own pace and everyone in the class is kind and encouraging. For first timers, try the basic boot camp and work your way up. You won't be disappointed!
