Being the nearest purveyor of delicious, nutritious alcohol, this place gains an obligatory three stars. And...that's about it. The selection is decent, but there isn't any room to explore without knocking something or someone over. Like I'm constantly replaying that "Seinfeld" scene where George is wearing that unwieldy gore-tex coat in the liquor store and obliterating wine bottles left and right. That's what it feels like. The staff always seems like they're laughing at me, too. I realize, yes, I do look like I'm fourteen and I did just ask for the cheapest bottle of spumante you have, but can't you just wait until I leave to laugh at me? kthanx. The one vestige of whimsy comes from the decoration of the display windows. They appear to change with the season and feature liquor bottles festooned with streamers and other party store supplies. It's like they have Meshach Taylor's character from "Mannequin" squirreled away behind the Shiraz or something. But it works! All of I sudden I'll be thinking, "Wow, I didn't even want a bottle of Coconut Malibu Bacardi until I saw a plastic lei around it." Yay, booze! read more

Being pretty much the only place near Columbia where you can buy wine and spirits, it gets a lot of traffic. That being said, instead of resting on their laurels and accepting that people will patronize their business without putting in too much effort, the people at International Wines & Spirits are actually pretty thoughtful about their selection. They separate the types of wines by type/region, have regular tastings, will happily recommend something, and even have a decent selection of organic wines. The place is the size of a New York City closet, though, so be prepared to be in close quarters with other shoppers. Which might not be a bad thing - new friends! read more

Got a little time so let me comment on this a little bit A very small shop, but on a great location. In the main road of columbia residence. You can say you can get enough attention as a consumer, well, which corner can they be and ignore you. They have basic brands of spirits, tough many of the flavors are out of stock. For Bordeaux, I could only see 4 selections. The price were all under 20. Well, you can say their price are cheap, but those products were cheap also. Free delivery, though not very efficient. The delivery guy seems like on a part time job and doesn't have a good attitude either. The owner does do her job, but that's it. I don't see any enthusiasm or proud of the liquor bussiness. Overall, if you desperately need some alcohol and don't care for specific brand, this is the place to go to. Otherwise there is a much better shop just couple blocks away. read more

I am a Barnard student, therefore I have probably visited this liquor upwards of 200 times in my 4 years here. Wow, that makes me sound like an alcoholic. The prices are in line with other New York liquor establishments. I've definitely seen cheaper, like on 123rd and La Salle, but those places are often the ones you don't want to visit after like..6pm. International is always full of students and the store is tiny, but they have everything you need. Except if you're looking for champagne for Columbia homecoming. Then forget about it. I like the staff. If you speak Spanish to them they'll love you. And sometimes they try to class up the joint with some wine tastings in sad plastic cups. Love that. OH and if it's your birthday and they card you (which is rare) then they'll probably give you a little bottle of free alcohol! read more

Great selection of wine and top notch customer service when they are not over flooded with Columbia students - even then, they are nice and efficient. Most of the guys can give a good recommendation on wine choices and Arturo, in particular, is very knowledgeable. Many of my favorite wines have been at their suggestion, and I am a picky customer. read more

I would like to thank the management of the store for clearing up this matter. As Katia has explained, the $14.14 charge was legitimate. It was made on September 9 but only credited on the 12th--the same day I made another purchase for $17.41. Therein, sprang the confusion. Though I do think the original exchange with the store manager could have been handled more discreetly, I should have been a bit more patient. The store is still a fun place to go and I will continue my patronage for the next 20 years! read more

Nice little store with wine and hard alcohol in many sizes. The employees here were nice too. A lot of market in NYC don't sell hard alcohol so it is nice to find one close by. read more

I literally order from this establishment 3 or 4 times a week! I call tonight for my usual delivery and they tell me no because now their summer hours are different! Wow talk about not caring what so ever about regular patrons? I will never shop there again and I'm spreading the word to my building and they will tell their neighbors on riverside. The problem with this liquor store is that despite the sign on the door regarding proper identification being required, they sell to underaged college kids and do not check identifications. When I asked one of the clerks this evening why he didn't check the identification of two apparent minors buying a bottle of vodka, his answer was "they are regular customers, I checked their ids a few weeks ago, and I know they are over 21." Not only does that violate the NYS liquor law regarding id checks, it was an offensive insult and fraud. Perhaps the liquor authority should pay them an undercover visit. read more

Fairly decent selection of wine and liquor in a very small space. They carry a lot of relatively cheap bottles, which I appreciate. They also carry a lot of the bottles I buy at Trader Joe's wine shop for a couple bucks more, but this place is a hell of a lot closer to where I live than Union Square. Seems to be the store closest to Columbia, too. Sometimes they do wine tastings. You could do a lot better or a lot worse, but this place is fine by me. read more

I ordered 4 Crown Royal Noble French Oak Cask and 2 Crown Royal Canadian Whisky Noble Collection 13 Year Blenders' Mash for my collection, and had them sent to a shipping outlet near the border, so i could drive across to pick them up... I did receive the 4 French oak (yay me) but i received 2 Crown Royal Canadian Whisky Noble Collection 13 Year Bourbon Mash instead of the the Blenders...With no choice but to bring them home i ended up paying a disgusting amount of duty (i made the mistake of bringing them into BC instead of Alberta) after several calls to the shop being told that they would look into it and being told that they were the same thing (even though their website has both and list them as 2 different items).. i finally got a straight answer this morning (after having to call again and again).. they do not now nor have they ever stocked the Blenders Mash and they sent me the bourbon anyway... and their only solution is to send me a shipping label to return the items for a refund to which i would have to drive back across the border to use.. what a joke read more

It's the only liquor store in the immediate neighborhood, unless you want to walk to Martin Bros on 107. Most of the time I don't feel like walking there unless I need something special, and some of the staff at MB can have a little attitude. As has been mentioned, it's tiny tiny tiny, but they try to have a little bit of everything. The staff is helpful if you ask for assistance, and friendly, especially if you're a regular. And they deliver, which is great if the weather is bad or if you're just too lazy to leave your apartment. read more

While International is conveniently located in Morningside Heights and the selection is OK for their store size, they advertised on social media in early 2015 that they had received a variety of hard-to-find bourbons and that they would sell out quickly--a fair assumption given the current supply demand imbalance within the premium American whiskey market and the feverish enthusiast community. As a fan of bourbon, I made a trip to the store with the hope of having the opportunity to purchase one of the bottles only to learn that the prices were approximately 10x the SRP and 2x the private secondary market. The explanation/justification was that other stores in the city were doing the same thing. I'm not sure what they are trying to accomplish by offering the bottles--one was $2400--at such prices while also promoting them on social media, but I'm certain that they will not sell quickly unless their buyer is misinformed or price isn't an issue. It's not my prerogative what individual customers do. I recognize that International has a business to run that includes building in an appropriate margin, and I don't think there should be anything stopping stores from charging what they want, but I will likely not be returning as a future customer. I am looking for stores that build relationships with their customers and not ones that play some arbitrage game on certain products. One way for such stores to do exactly that is to prevent individuals from buying at around SRP and reselling on the more liquid secondary markets by requiring their customers who purchase such rare items to open the bottle before leaving the store. read more
