I came in to check out the selection since Mitchell's looked like a long time, local business. The guy behind the counter was a little curt until I asked his opinion about a particular whiskey and his whole attitude changed. He warned up immediately giving me advice and suggestions of mini spirits to try out. Im not sure about these horrible reviews regarding selection. The store is on the smaller to average size for the city with narrow aisles of wine racks. The walls have an assortment of spirits. Keep it general and you will be fine. This is like a bodega of alcohol, not a superstore. Adjust your expectations and you will find something decent. read more

Great Prices, Management Stinks. Not that I got to a neighborhood liquor store expecting anything special--the prices are always have kept me coming to this location. The other day, something truly bizarre happened: as I was ordering, with my cell phone in my other hand, the manager began going off at me on how he didn't want to ever see me again with a phone in my hand. (I was not on a call, or even texting, it was just in my hand.) I laughed, thinking he was joking, and then he added "I'm serious. I don't want that in my store." I said nothing, paid, went to leave and heard, again, from behind the counter "DON'T BRING THAT PHONE IN AGAIN." I paused, tempted to peek back inside and tell him that he'd just lost himself a customer. Very bizarre behavior. read more

Lots of variety packed into a small space. I managed to find a "local" Pino Noir" (I know, I know I saw Sideways, but still like the wine). The Pino Noir was from a vineyard in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate NY. I'd wished the staff had been a little more helpful and that there'd been a few more reasonably priced selections. They were one of the few, if only wine/liquor stores we saw open on a Sunday. read more

I REALLY like this liquor store. It's small but very nice and organized and the people who work here are readily available to assist with your every need. They have every white wine, champagne, rose or prosecco in the cooler which they replace with one from the shelf so you're guaranteed a cold one when you need. The wines are very reasonably priced, which I was very surprised about considering this is a spot in the Upper West Side. This is for sure my go to place whenever I'm visiting family in the area! read more

One of the worst sins of man is wine apathy, and this place is a den of sin at its worst. They *have* a lot of wine. But it is poorly organized, overpriced, and the staff knows nothing about it. Get the hard stuff here, but don't suffer the sins of the wine apathy. read more

I can see that I'm not the only one who found the negative reviews to be out of order or lacking common sense. This is not a wine shop only, as shown by the huge sign outside, so if people are looking to be told what better would impress their friends, they should probably read a book on their own to begin with. Pragmatism. There's a Mouton Cadet that I always take there, one of the fairest deal I've seen. The prices are overall understandable. Gentrification is not sparing anyone, so if an imported bottle of wine gains $2 over a year one shouldn't act so surprised. The employees have always been courteous with me; bottles don't have the prices on them and (though the name is written below) when I asked they pointed the price. After reading more carefully the one star reviews, I noticed how it seemed as if they were expecting an apple store with a windows store staff. I've shopped here for years. The staff have never been particularly helpful (I go elsewhere if I need advice) and the prices certainly aren't cheap, but the store is convenient and on my way home just to pick up a bottle or two of wine for dinner. Tonight, in the middle of a long, heavy, messy snow storm, I stopped in to pick up some wine for company. Just walking from the subway was treacherous. When I got to the register I asked the gentleman (I believe he's the owner) for a double bag because of the snow. He nodded, rang up the bottles, told me the price, put the bottles in a single bag, took my money, gave me my change -- and then (and only then) said "No two bags. One bag enough." I said "But the snow...". He sneered, pointed upward and said "or the price go up". I took my wine and said "OK, then I won't be back". So, he saved himself a nickel (if that much). And lost a regular customer. It's easy enough for me to find another unhelpful wine seller. With that kind of attitude, how does a mom-and-pop store owner expect to stay in business? read more

The man who runs this place is really rude. And he tried to cheat me on my change. I ultimately paid in cash because he spent ages with my credit card, acting suspiciously with it. Then he didn't give me all my change and when I asked for it, he was insulting. Just don't shop here -- they don't want customers apparently, from the way they treat them. read more

Never again! I went to buy a bottle of champagne. I bought it from them and out of curiosity wanted to see what the price was at the liquor store one block away on Columbus avenue. It was $5 less! When I called to get a refund or the same price, the manager Felipe yelled at me, refused and was completely unaccommodating! I'm surprised by the negative reviews regarding the poor service. I live nearby and have used Mitchell's as my go to place for a while. For such a small space, they carry a good range of wine and spirits. Their prices can be higher than the competition on certain items, but I suspect that will change with new liquor store now open on Broadway. read more

My go-to place for the hard stuff. They have a great selection of liquor in hard-to-find brands and sizes, and the prices are cheaper than they are at other nearby liquor stores (like Candlelight on Broadway). The little old man at the counter is very crisp and businesslike, but that's cool, I'm here for the booze, not the conversation. Great wine selection too- tons of Californian and kosher wines in particular- all reasonably priced. read more

Prices 30%-40% above other places on the UWS and horrible service. The staff is not curious, and is looking to get you in and out the door as quickly as possible. The pricing for anything above $15, is about 35% more than the guys in the area, and they don't match. Avoid at all costs. read more

I've ordered delivery and shopped here for years. I ordered delivery and they brought me two bottles not the one I ordered. I said to the man over the phone I've had issues before being over charged with them before so I won't send just send a bottle back I'll send both bottles back. It's the third time I've had issues with Mitchells over charging me with delivery before. I will NEVER shop with them again. I also don't think they care as the man on the phone screamed at me and said fine just send it back! I have shopped with them for 5 years and I've been loyal. Super Expensive, come on $50 for a handle of vodka? $20 for a tiny bottle of peach ciroc? $12 for a regular $7 bottle of wine. With that being said, they deliver, and they deliver fast. My friends and I have lived on the UWS for many years. I have never had an issue, I always deal with the owner directly, and the store albeit small has some of the best selections for the price. Generally I am introduced to lesser known wines that within a year or two become hits. Prices are more than competitive and the back rack is always fun and worth looking at. read more

Decent selection of lower priced wines. Their pricing is reasonable and their delivery was super quick 9 blocks away. But the $40 minimum order requirement is a little high. The second guy I spoke with over the phone was very helpful in my final selection process. However, I did have a strange experience the first time I called to place the same order. As I was placing it and had given my address I got disconnected. I kept calling back for 15-20 minutes with no answer. I found out from the second guy I spoke with that finally answered the phone that the first guy I was speaking with had left and no record of my order existed. Kind of messed up. People have always been very courteous to me, both in person and by phone. I don't find prices to be high, either. In fact, lower than other in the hood for same bottle. I can see why this place has less than 3 star average. WOW the "manager" at the register was an unhappy, unfriendly, unhelpful person. Normally my visits to Mitchell's are fine. Nothing special, but I get what I need. My last visit, I brought back a bottle of unopened Vermouth, with the receipt, because I had gotten the wrong one for a friend the day before and asked if I could exchange it. The guy behind the counter refused to even look at me as he told me they would not take it back. When I asked for a manager, he shouted upstairs in Spanish, and then said the manager was busy and didn't have time to speak with me. As I left, I pointed out that not a single sign in the front of their store said anything about all sales being final. Be accommodating to your customers and they will repay it over and over again. And if your policy is not customer-friendly, at least be respectful about it. read more

Decent selection, nice layout, great location... so what's the problem? These folks do NOT know wine. Not only is the customer service poor on the knowledge end of wine selection, but also rude. My family has three times returned wine that has been corked, with the manager/owner not being able to understand what "corked" means. Each time he would deny it was a bad bottle, proceed to tell us he never had a corked wine, and then say that the wines from that "batch" have all been fine (unaware of what corked means I assume). A complete indifference to remedying the situation, bad communications skills, and an unpleasant demeanor has left us opting to go elsewhere. In a city full of wine stores, there is no need to subject oneself to the difficulties of Mitchell's Wine... even if the location is great and the allure of the neon sign beckons. read more

This happens to be my local liquor store. I like don julio añejo a lot and purchase a bottle from them almost every 3-4 weeks. In the last year I've now had two different bottles that literally smelled of mold inside them and were undrinkable. The amount of energy and frustration they put me through on the first time was unbearable. They insisted it wasn't possible what I was saying and refused to exchange it for another bottle. Finally they said they'd send it to their distributer to make the call, and they ended up giving me a new bottle. This second time I brought the bottle back and told them they could do whatever they wanted but I wasn't going to keep it. Again- nasty and disgusting. No apology. Just that it's not possible. I've had dozens of añejos, and don julio is my go-to. This tasted horrid and was the opposite of the smooth don julio añejo I was accustomed to. And the cork reeked of mold. Anyhow I think my hope in writing this review is that someone from the store reads it and takes it to heart. I wasn't even asking this time to exchange it cause I didn't have the energy to fight with them- I told them this and they were still nasty. I just stumbled upon the Yelp reviews for Mitchells hoping to find out when their renovations will be done. I'm amazed by the negative reviews stating that their prices are higher than Gotham. I just came from Gotham (because Mitchells is still not up and running) and bought a one liter bottle of my favorite whiskey....for the same price as Mitchells charges for a 1.75 liter bottle. Mitchell's does what few Manhattan wine stores are able to. It provides a great selection at very competitive prices. The store is not pretty, and the people behind the counter won't pamper you. But they are quick, they deliver, they're cheap and they have everything you could want. read more

I will never set foot in this store again and will advise my friends/neighbors to do the same. For the first time in my life, I brought back a bottle of wine (Pinor Noir, approx. $17) because it was undrinkable -- absolutely "spit out" bad. I have had this wine before, and it's clear I just had a bad bottle (confirmed by 2 other people who tried it). I was not even asking for a refund, just to get a new bottle. The returned bottle was nearly full. Nonetheless, the owner treated me as if I was trying to pull a fast one. As I sensed his recalcitrance, I mentioned that he would certainly lose a customer if he wouldn't even exchange the wine. He rudely told me "fine." Horrible, horrible customer service. By the way, I have never bought a bottle there that I've loved -- I go there because it's my closest option. Boycotting this store poses no problem whatsoever.
