I absolutely love this place. Their staff is extremely helpful. For instance, I'm a science teacher and I frequently need random supplies for crazy projects I have dreamed up. There's an older guy in the hardware supply section that literally helps me figure out exactly what I need. We often end up brainstorming together. They've also helped me find difficult to source parts. In the garden section, some of the most beautiful and hardy plants I have ever purchased have been from here. I love that they buy from local growers and I find that my plants do much better than I would otherwise experience from some of the big stores that simply sell cheap plants. This is a really fantastic hardware store - and reminds me of the old Hastings in both customer service and employee knowledge. While it's certainly not the least expensive experience, there are some things that are worth more than saving a buck or two - in this case you're getting the benefit of the amazing information accrued by the Ace employees you'll meet at this location. The people here are simply amazing. Second, there are a few items here that you won't find at other BORG stores - some specialty tools, brands and other things worth trying/buying that the big box stores will never carry due to costs. This Ace has been my go-to source for organically grown, heirloom sourced starter herbs, for instance. I remember my first visit here (20 years ago?) and how well treated I was by the staff - I was able to find something that wasn't available at the local Home Depot - when I asked about it someone walked me directly to the shelf. Try doing that at HD or Lowes! Kudos to the staff of this Ace Hardware - you've consistently put the pleasure back into shopping. I think it's best to visit this location during the week - the weekends are very busy and parking can become a problem. read more

I don't know why I stop by this Ace. It looks beautiful and has wonderful merchandise but their employees there always get me. Especially the cashiers. This time the young men work in the register just 10 minutes ago short changed me $10 and I didn't realize it until I walked outside. Luckily the cash register area is in the camera. He was so busy making sure I didn't give him fake 20s and then he rips me off 10 bucks. I'll never come back. They suck. read more

Excellent customer service. Every time. There is always a friendly face ready and willing to help. Not just to point to where something is or tell you an aisle number but to actually show you where to find what you need. On today's visit, I was buying a couple of screws. Both the lady and the guy at the side desk directed me to the back wall where Alice would meet me to help me find the right screws. When I got back there, Alice was there ready to help me. At the register, the cost was $0.24. Crazy me only has $0.05 cash. I asked the cashier if I could just run to the car and see if I had anymore coins. She said don't worry about it. We have spare change. How sweet! I definitely prefer coming here over the larger competitors because of the great service (and closer proximity) even if I pay a little bit more. read more

I really love this place but why is it so expensive?!? I buy plants here but not much else. The yard art, outdoor furniture, and tchotchkes are so over priced. I love hardware. Yes, you can quote me. I like this Ace hardware because there's always help around when I need it (to find an obscure fitting or something). Plus, I can buy one or two of a part instead of a blister-pack of twelve of them in the big-box alternative. It's a little more expensive, but the service is worth it. We live really close to this store, and really enjoy walking to shop with our dog, who has always been an Ace favorite. I recently needed some sand bags for a home project, and found them readily available at Ace. The website showed a package of 25 bags for $17.99. Upon arrival at the store, there were individual bags available for $.99 each, and packs of 25 on a high shelf. I indicated to a helper that I wanted the bag of 25. In comes Tony, the OWNER to reach the item on the high shelf. He then walked me directly to a register and instead of scanning the SKU on the item, he manually rang them up at the individual price, looking me in the eye as he did it. It was pretty busy, so I paid and continued with my project, knowing I had been overcharged. I realize this seems petty, but it felt intentional and left me feeling uneasy, wondering if I shouldn't just drive to the big box down the road instead. Sadly, this small incident has completely changed my perception of this store. read more

I've spent a lot of time in hardware stores in my life, but as a young woman I am not always treated excellently in them. I've been very happy with the service at this Ace - help is offered (or easy to find) but I've also always felt welcome. Being an Ace the selection isn't as big as a Home Depot or Lowes, but they pack a lot in to this little store. I've come here for tools, paint, lights, hardware, and plant supplies. I've had good experiences in each case. In addition to everything you expect to find in a hardware store, this has a fairly large selection of clothes and homegoods. It can be a little pricey, but much of it is fairly nice. I particularly like their garden section - the selection is excellent. When you want to pick up bags of dirt, they have a back drive that you take so they are loaded directly into your car. I'm happy to not need to lug around bags of dirt like at most stores. Their seed selection is great, including heirlooms and some hard-to-find varieties. I've had excellent luck sprouting the seeds I've bought here. I came in to buy "white" paint, and the employee was very helpful in helping me match the paint (using a chip of paint) and balance what my needs were. I expect that employees are equally knowledgeable and helpful in other sections of the store as well. read more

I don't do much DIY stuff so I cannot really speak for the hardware and home improvement aspect of this store. I can, however, tell you that they have an incredible selection of plants and flowers. Everything I have bought from there has flourished. Too bad I no longer have a place for outdoor plants. This is the best place to get them if I did. They also have fantastic kitchen accessories, cleansers (Caldrea, Mrs. Meyers) and beautiful gifts. At Christmas time, I find I get a lot of my shopping done there. Love it. The only drawback is that they close early and I prefer to run errands a little later in the evening. So, I always have to make sure to get by there earlier in the day. I was looking for a hardware store not far from where we moved to, and this place was very close, so I decided to stop by. When I walked in, I fell in love. First off, the staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. Every time I've been there (a lot recently, with a new house), someone has always been there to help and has done a great job doing it! I've even seen some staff members wearing shirts that boast that they work in the best ACE store in Atlanta, which I won't contest one bit! Their selection is pretty great (though you can't buy wood planks there and they can't really cut down what they do have), and they even have keys that Home Depot doesn't have. But the crown jewels of this place are the garden department and the gift department. Outside is a wonderland of plants and pots and other gardening essentials and decorations. You could spend hours just admiring everything! And inside there are tons of really nice, stylish gifts, anywhere from scarves to mugs, even artwork for your walls! I'm pretty sure I'll be buying some Christmas presents there this year! Speaking of holidays, they even have a little seasonal section that has some fun Halloween stuff right now. They also have a lot of merchandise with local college and City of Decatur emblems on it. Love this place! I have some pretty fierce customer loyalty already! read more

Store can get very busy on the weekends, additional parking in the Chinese restaurant next door. Also, there are no lumber sales. Can't get everything in the city. read more

I just can't say how much I love this Ace Hardware. The staff is so friendly. I have been coming here for seven years now, and every time I go in, they can tell me exactly where everything I need is in the store. One time I came in five minutes before closing to get a spare key made. While i feel most people would have rolled their eyes at me, the sales associate was very helpful and made not one but two keys for me. Today we bought a Big Green Egg. Both owners came over to talk to us and share grilling tips. We were greeted by every employee in the store- not unusual- they do this every time. We love this store so much one time we were at a local bar talking about how awesome this place is. The owner walked by, heard us rambling, and bought us a round of drinks. How amazing is that? I love that every time I walk inside, I am greeted by the cashiers and then asked by one of the floor staff if they can help me. I am usually here to pick up something specific, so I haven't had a chance to wander and learn the whole store. I have, however, perused the middle of the store, where they have kitchen/cooking stuff and a ton of random stuff...from jewelry to Fox Bros. BBQ sauce to lotions and fancy soaps. This is the best Ace Hardware! I have passed this Ace so many times, but I never had a reason to visit. We needed some rope and we were passing this store, so we stopped. This store is not just a hardware store. They have so many cool, unusual and arty household items. This is where I will be buying almost all of my future gifts. The garden section is great. I have always really liked the Ace on Highlands in Virginia Highlands, but this Ace is in an "Ace Hardware" league of it's own. The staff is very courteous and helpful. Best hardware store in in the Atl hands down. Been going there over 30 yrs, and they only got better. After moving, I now live 45 miles away. I tried the local hardware store but couldn't get anyone to wait on me, not once but twice. Called Tony the owner to purchase a large Kamado Joe. Asked about delivery and he offered to deliver it himself, mind you I now live 45 miles away. Once the Kamado arrived at the store Tony headed out to my place. Once here he placed it on my patio, and completely set it up. A few days later I realized that I couldn't raise the lid due to arthritis. I called Tony and explained to him my dilemma. He said no problem I'll order you the air-lift hinged Kamado, and come pick up the other one when the new one arrives. Like clock work he came back out, repacked the return, and set up the new one. I can now now lift the lid with ease. To this day, if I need something from a hardware store I drive the 2 hr journey there and back knowing I'll get excellent service each time. This is another great example of a Decatur local business getting it right. The staff here is outstanding. They are very helpful and attentive, but give you enough room to browse at your leisure. The have a great BBQ selection with alot of grills and accessories. They also have a ton of little college merchandise and little outdoor nick nacks. They also have alot of cool kitchen gadgets and accessories. We go there to get Cole's bird seed, which is the best (we're minor bird watching geeks). Cole's makes a "hot" version of bird seed that keeps the squirrels away. They also have a great plant selection with some emphasis on native plants. The only downfall is that you are going to be paying a little more than your big box retail stores (Lowe's, Home Depot). But to get the type of service and access to a wide variety of cool stuff, it's well worth supporting this business. Of course, you can get all of your typical Hardware needs from this store. I show up at this Ace one day with a non-functioning drill in hand, five tiny parts of my tv mount, and no idea what I am doing wrong. I walk out 5 minutes later with a new drill bit, maybe $1.10 less in my pocket, free scrap wood to practice on and a huge smile on my face. Another time, I came here with half my kitchen faucet, asking about how to hook a hose up to it so I can wash my car despite having no exterior spigot. The neighbors laugh but Ace's solution was a good one, and the only way I can keep my car clean. Yet another time, I showed up at Ace upset because my patio became besieged by hummingbirds trying to use the normal bird feeder, and I didn't know what or how to feed them. Knowledgeable staff, variety of products, and twenty minutes later I had hummingbirds drinking the right kind of sugar out of my new feeder. Friendly, helpful, well-priced... This store won an award for being the best Ace Hardware in the country, and I see why. Helpful, friendly, knowledgeable staff, good selection of products and excellent outdoor center. They've got local Georgia sports team memorabilia hanging from the walls, and City of Decatur logos scattered about. It feels like the kind of hometown, neighborhood hardware store where Marty McFly would get some wiring and screws for Doc Brown's Delorean, if that makes any sense at all. I love it. There's a Home Depot down the street, but I avoid it whenever possible. Lazy, unpleasant employees who do their best to avoid contact with customers, impractical, sprawling layout. From the awesome garden area outside to the huge selection of gifty-type items, oh, and the practical hardware stuff... Pretty much a one-stop shop, minus food... Why 5 Stars? The people are VERY helpful and actually knowledge about the stuff they sell (as opposed to Lowe's and Home Depot...they are the worst). On the weekend, the staff is typically occupied and prepared to be patient...the wait will be worth it though. It's got a small store feel but has a large selection and stock of commonly needed items. If you're looking for an aisle dedicated to chain saws, go to a big box store. Hands down best hardware store in Atlanta. Friendly, eager, helpful, convenient, affordable. I drive by three hardware stores on my way there from Grant Park. Don't be fooled by the outside--the place is very spacious. And they have EVERYTHING. This includes an outstanding selection of Big Green Egg products, accessories, lump charcoal, and wood for smoking. I bought a medium green egg here recently and they threw in a BGE thermometer, a bag of hickory chips, a BBQ book, grill brush and a bag of lump charcoal for free. Can't recall ever getting that kind of appreciation at Lowe's. If you insist on saving 79 cents on a $70 item, go ahead and brave the crowds, parking lot, mile high shelves, and unhelpful staff at Lowes or Home Depot. I go here for the professional service and the expertise. You can't get that at Home Depot. You also can't get 2x4s at Ace, so I'm glad we have both. It's a bit pricey, but they're always sending me $5 off this and that, and I take full advantage of that. They have special-ordered 300 daffodil bulbs for me for a tenth of the normal cost per unit, and I appreciated that. Even if the Walmart opens up, I'm sure I'll continue to go to Ace.
