There are a lot of reasons to do your dog-and-cat food shopping at the Galloways' friendly, family-run store. They host a social night, frequent adoption events, Scout fundraisers, and are a cornerstone of the Grant Park-Peoplestown neighborhood. Their private label Pet Chef product is excellent - and competitively priced! I was initially reluctant to buy dog food here, thinking it would be too pricey. But if you're already feeding your dog a wheat-free, corn-free kibble from a trusted brand (most of which have had recalls due to quality control issues), compare prices per serving and you'll find you're really not spending more here. Compare the recommended serving size of what you're currently feeding, not just the price by weight. I was buying Trader Joe's wheat-free corn-free kibble before I switched to Intown Hound's chicken and rice, and found that I needed to reduce the amount my dog eats because there are fewer fillers and more nutrition. You can see the difference just by noting the darker color of the richer food. Compare the price per ounce to a premium brand like Wellness, and you might even find that you're spending less for Pet Chef. Stop in and. talk to whoever is behind the counter. Very helpful and friendly staff. I'm visiting from out of town and noticed fleas on my dog. I'm ignorant when it comes to flea meds and treatments as I've always had short hair dogs before my Sproodle. Bathing and oils just weren't cutting it. The woman working when I came in gave me several options and advice. Bonus- you don't have to purchase an entire package of medicine as they sell individual pills. I love this because I don't like giving medicines unless absolutely necessary. read more

My cat is snobby about his toys in a skanky way. He snubs streamers on sticks, kitten mittens with balls on each fingertip and his leopard-patterned crinkle sack (his Valentine's Day gift in 2009). But he lunges toward my Q-tip jar every morning and could chase a Publix bag for hours. I would just litter my floor with milk caps and receipts, but I can't have such clutter in my home. Why do I even try to please him? Why??? I recently discovered some jars of small inexpensive toys at Intown Healthy Hound & City Kitty, the yellow tubes, blue corkscrews and psychedelic catnip-stuffed balls mimicking the trash he loves while still appearing classy. Don't be fooled by the term "City Kitty" in the shop title. The cat section is minuscule. Perhaps that's because felines are so hard to satisfy. read more

I am so lucky to have this store in my neighborhood. When I first moved to Atlanta a year ago, I knew I had to figure out all my dog places - what vet to take my dog to, where to get her food, etc. Less than half a mile from my new home, I found Intown Healthy Hound and loved it immediately (and so did my dog!). The staff was very nice and helpful, and I asked about their dog food selection, giving them the background on my dog's health, previous food, etc. They gave me free samples of the local pet food, Pet Chef, for my dog to try. They told me and showed me the ingredients (which are great) and I loved that even with such high quality, it was not extremely expensive. Needless to say, my dog loves her new food, loves getting her cookies there, and the pig knees and pig ears! And I love going there for the warm hospitality, the great selection of local products, and they put on great Thursday social nights! Intown Healthy Hound is highly recommended! read more

After adding a third dog to our mix that has some food allergy issues I began looking for pet stores that sold specialty foods that would accommodate her diet. We've bought specialty foods at other stores before but found out that Intown carries Pet Chef Express which is a local maker. We thought we would go in and try out this food and this shop. It's a spartan store, they have only the basics for dog care but what they make up in pet accessories they make up in massive amounts of knowledge. I've never had a pet supply ask me about the weight, ages, and activity levels of of my dogs to match food for them. Atlanta's "green" pet store. This store is a very welcome addition to the very dog-friendly Grant Park area. It's located right across from Zoo Atlanta. When you walk by they always have a big bowl of water out - which is much appreciated on this hot summer days! They make a lot of their own dog food and treats, but they also have a few name brands of organic dog foods. We were VERY excited to see that they carry Blackwood (which we've been feeding our girls for quite sometime now that we always had to order online!) They also carry Lick-a-lots - a local doggie ice cream that our girls love! They are getting ready to open their do-it-yourself dog washes very soon. And they also carry great dog (& cat) other treats & accessories that all have a great back story. We've also been very impressed that they've made a name in the community already. They've helped a few lost dogs make it home and are always willing to help when a lost dog is found in the park. It's a cozy little store run by a charming family, complete with an adorable little girl and well behaved doggie. If you're a softie like me, it's really difficult to leave without buying something. Although I'm not in a position to feed my pooch expensive organic dog food, I am tempted to stop in for dog treats or accessories. It would be nice to see more toys and accessories. This is a great place to get your dog supplies. We buy the chicken & rice food with glucosamine and our 10 year old dog acts like he is 2. The owners are awfully nice as are the employees. They also offer delivery under the name "Pet Chef Express". The full name of the business is Intown Healthy Hound & City-Kitty, so you will find cat supplies here, thought normally there are some big dogs in there that might view your cat as a snack. Beer nights are the second Thursday of every month, and low cost shots are often offered on 2nd Saturdays of each month. What more needs to be said? I don't know what I would do without Intown Healthy Hound! James and Bridget are just the best and their Irish Wolf Hounds are super sweet. When I got my puppy, I went into IHH and was pleasantly surprised. This little store is packed with all kinds of amazing toys, treats, leashes, beds, high quality food, and a self-service dog wash. You can fill a bag with a large variety of treats and pay by weight which is great because my puppy loves a variety in his treats. All of the toys, leashes, beds, etc. are of the highest quality and affordable prices. I was immediately greeted, asked about my day, what kind of dog, how old, etc. It was like I was meeting a new friend and not the usual bored, snarky guy/gal you usually find. James was right there asking all the right questions about my dog to help me find exactly what I needed for the best price. But the BEST part is the food! IHH sells Blackwood, Verus, Evangers, and (my personal favorite) Pet Chef Express. For the other reviews that said they couldn't afford fancy, organic, high-quality food, they are wrong. Pet Chef Express is extremely affordable (around the same price as Purina One) but with the best ingredients. Oh, and almost as great as the food is that IHH delivers for only $2.50! I have been to the little pet supply stores all over Atlanta, and this one blows all the others out of the water with their amazing products, friendly service, and willingness to go the extra mile. I love the newsletters announcing discount shot clinics, local pet-friendly festivals, new products, dogs and cats in need, and food recalls. As long as I am in Atlanta, I will use this store exclusively for my pet's needs. read more

This place is just all around awesome. I have never encountered an employee that doesn't seem happy to be there or ready to help in any way, my dog & cat are never dissatisfied with anything that I bring home from there, and the pricing never seems exorbitant in my opinion. I always get my little dog the chicken and rice formula and he enjoys it. It's actually a bit cheaper than most organic dog foods that I find in pet stores and I feel better about knowing where it comes from. I usually get him a chew stick or some other small treat that they have next to the counter as well and he loves them. My dog, Anya, had stomach problems pretty much since I adopted her in 2006. I was buying the expensive food, and then that got recalled. Then I was buying different expensive food, and THAT too got recalled. THEN, I found out about In-Town Healthy Hound. Their kibble is homemade & organic, not factory produced and "all natural," so my mind is far more at ease about the looming possibilities of more recalls. And Anya's stomach problems have vanished! Anya likes the Salmon mix. Best of all, I'm actually paying a few dollars less than I was before, and I'm paying for a better product. They also have a self-service dog wash. I always use self service because I don't want to pay a groomer to traumatize my dog (she hates baths) and my corgi will clog the drains up in two seconds flat if we bathe at home. In-Town provides the standing tub, soaps, dryer, doggy cologne, nail clippers, brushes, ear cleaning stuff, and even generic Sham-WOW towels (which are pretty terrific, I must say). It's $15 regular, but $7.50 on Wednesday for those of us who are less financially inclined :-). Their staff is super knowledgeable about the bathing process, too. I had no idea that I had been scalding poor Anya's skin! No one ever told me how cool the water needs to be for our pups to be comfortable! Did I mention they have homemade organic treats too?? I'm actually glad I spoke with the owner one evening about my dogs or I would not have known that pigs ears are bad for small dogs -- and this guy sells pig ears. The day after I adopted my lil guy these folks were giving out samples at a neighborhood festival. After checking prices for the healthy dog foods around town I compared their prices. Not only are their prices better than most- they deliver! And they're quick about it! On one or maybe two orders over the past few years there has been a snag of some kind- minor stuff like the order was delivered the next day (as I was expecting) instead of the same day- and they've done something like thrown in a package of treats. They're great people and I'm glad to be able to support their business! I love being able to give my dog the good, healthy food that they offer while sticking to my budget. A friend told me about the natural pet food that Intown Hound carries by Pet Chef Express. I wasn't sure if I was going to be "that person" who buys her spoiled kitties fancy cat food. After having all my questions answered by a very friendly and knowledgeable employee--I decided, I would be that person. I did some quick math and realized the cost would probably be about the same as what I was spending on Iams. Since the Pet Chef stuff is higher quality, you don't have to feed as much. My cats used to beg for food constantly; now with the good, healthy stuff, they actually leave a little in their bowls and nibble on it throughout the day. I love IHH!!! read more

Though my two monster dogs have priced me out of their dog foods, the staff are always willing to talk and give recommendations. They also sell great organic chicken feed for Intown chicken raisers. I get a teacher's discount and carry to the curb service every time. I have to say that this is the benchmark that I compare every pet store with. The owners are pleasant and professional and care about all animals and the community. They have gone out of their way for me and my sweet old pup many, many times. The grooming services, self wash and monthly shot clinic are great. I love that you can buy a couple of pounds of food at a time. It is great for small dogs and those who get pick if they eat the same food too long. I went in there today to get dog food for my 2 dogs. I was used to going to a different pet supply place but since I live in grant pak I decided to give this place a try and I'm glad I did. They gave me helpful hints on helping my oldest dog get back to a normal weight. I used to spend over $20 a week on dog food for two chihuahuas and I bought some of the recommended food from Healthy Hound and they ate it right up. Now ill be on a more budget friendly dog food. By far the friendliest pet supply store I've ever been to and also the most helpful. Definitely will be back for their festivities that they do and also will be returning to keep my dogs healthy. I love this place. The owners and employees are so nice and helpful. They are always willing to help me with any dog issue, even if it can't be solved right away. My dog has a very sensitive stomach, and switching to the Pet Chef Express food has made a huge difference. I don't clean up dog puke all the time anymore. I discovered In Town Healthy Hound about five years ago when I was lamenting that my 12 year old miniature poodle seemed to have developed so many health problems. Trips to the vets, switching to vet recommended food did nothing to alleviate the foot chewing and wheezing. My sister who live in Grant Park and had been using Pet Chef food for several years convinced me to try ITHH food. The change in my boy was miraculous. Last year he hiked over 200 miles on the AT. I am a premium breeder of Goldendoodles and feed all five of my adult dogs Pet Chef. I recommend anyone that is within driving distance to continue to feed this great food. Wish I lived closer as I have to drive 200 miles round trip to get the food. Wonderful people with lots of knowledge. read more

We love Intown Healthy Hound! These folks are as nice and helpful as can be. They honestly care about what they do and it shows in every possible way. The first time we went here it was after we saw them at one of the many springtime festivals in our area two years ago. We have not bought pet food at a chain since. They deliver the heavy bags to your doorstep which is great when you need dog food and don't have the energy to schlep a 20 pound bag. They teach you how to successfully switch your dog's food without causing any stomach distress (which happens frequently for our little girl). If your dog has allergies or a sensitive stomach like our little one, they will help you get on the right track. Our dog has had less stomach problems since witching to the Pet Chef brand, and she was on Wellness before! Not to mention it is much less expensive.
