I had the SAME exact horrible customer service experience that another reviewer ("Elisa C") had. If Grace doesn't feel confident about coloring your hair OR if you talk to her longer than 3 minutes about your hair color ---she will get annoyed and be out right RUDE and DISMISSIVE. DO NOT GO HERE--awful attitude from Grace. Story: I came in for a color consultation. After pre-lightening my dark brown hair myself, my hair became orange/copper. I don't like the copper color, so I brought 3 photos of hair colors I'd like ( a light brunette, a dark blonde, & a chestnut brown). Grace said the chestnut brown would not make a big difference---ok, so I said lets forget about that one. I asked Grace what she can do to get my copper hair to a light brown/dark blonde range. She said she'd have to put a darker color to cover the copper + highlights + lowlights. The only thing I said after that was "oh ok sure, the only thing is I would like to stay light, not medium or dark brown" -------- I was at the salon for no longer than 3 MINUTES talking about my hair color concerns, and Grace got annoyed! She responded with an attitude "you know what, you don't know WHAT you like and I can't work that way...you really need to figure out what you want, because I will not work on your hair ..." . She seems very moody and entitled, what professional hair stylist gets annoyed by a client asking some questions and talking about their preferences?? Unfortunately, was just kicked out of my appointment before it even began because I apparently have bad energy. This is a first for me for both. This is only my second time having my hair colored so I wasn't prepared totally with how to express my needs and that apparently annoyed Grace. Aren't I the client? Shouldn't I be asked the appropriate questions to help with my experience?? I was so thrown by her reaction. She even suggested I go back to the place that did my color the first time!! I maybe said 7 words total and with those 7 words Grace determined: I had an attitude, I didn't express my needs appropriately and that I'm the kind of person that cannot be pleased. I apologized for any offense. She said "I don't want to work with you, I'm sorry" and gave me my coat. I am beside myself. As a single working mother of two young kids, I can seem busy or distracted - especially in the middle of the work day. But I am NEVER rude, disrespectful or inappropriate and I wasn't today. I was treated like trash without reason and I'm so confused and frankly offended. Wow, wow, wow! I was treated like royalty from the moment I walked in to when I left. Grace and her lovely assistant were so nice to me. I not only came to get my hair done, it was a whole relaxing experience. I'm just sorry I didn't get the assistant's name because she was so sweet and hospitable. I was greeted promptly and had my coat taken from me, which was nice. I was sat right away in the stylist chair. A few minutes later, Grace, my stylist came to greet me. I came to get balayage and she asked me for a picture. I showed her and she promptly when to work. The only criticism I have is that I wish the consultation was more in depth, like ask questions about my hair and things like that. My hair was curly when I came in so she did a quick straightening so she can start the coloring service. Grace works super quickly, her hands were flying all over my head. She works super confidently. During this time, I accepted an offer for coffee and kept myself busy reading some work I had for class. Not much small talk was made but I honestly didn't mind. I was doing my reading and a talkative stylist doesn't make or break it for me. Grace did offer me a conditioning treatment as an add-on service which I accepted. And boy, am I glad I did! It came with the most incredible scalp message I have ever received by her assistant. I almost fell asleep at the sink lol. I also got my ends trimmed because I needed to and again Grace did everything so quickly. While she was drying and styling my hair, parts of my hair had looked super brassy. I pointed this out and Grace offered a free retouch without hesitation. It looked like half of my head was orangey in tone and I was shocked at how nonchalant she was being but it turns out that the chair was awkwardly placed between two different sets of lighting. Once I looked myself in a different mirror, all was good! But , I was grateful for the offer of the free retouch, which wasn't necessary after all. I was also offered a complimentary shoulder massage after she was finished with my hair. The balayage, haircut and deep condition with olaplex came out to about $250 before the tip which was reasonable to me. I actually enjoyed getting my hair done. The salon itself is clean with minimalist decor. Bathroom was clean as well. And there were little details throughout the salon that makes it clear that a lot of effort was put into the place and guest experience. I would love to continue to support this business. read more

A recent review also reflects my experience in this salon. I set my appointment for 5pm, but was reached by the owner Grace claiming they 'overbooked' and there was a 'system flaw', so she asked me to come at 2pm which I gladly agreed. Arriving to the salon, there were two clients present, so I sat and waited quietly. I hit the 2 hour mark due to clients being present there, scheduled clients coming in, and Grace being the only stylist there. Grace noticed how upset I looked, so she quickly cut my hair, she also apologized and told me she asked me to come early because she wanted to leave work early for her family. That made me understand her schedule, but she lied in order to help herself. Half hour passes by and I reached to pay for my cut so I could leave and found her working with a client in the back. I was hesitant to accept her offer to attend me since I was the last one. I never raised my voice, never cursed, I was visibly upset and kept refusing to be attended anymore. She was fed up and asked me to leave, "That is a $110 worth of a cut, you are never welcomed here. Which is a shame because in order to find some service like this you would have to go downtown!" I quietly got my coat witnessed by another client and her staff trying to calm the owner down. I'm relieved that I will be meeting with my regular salon for the blind cuts Grace made to my long hair, but I can't help but notice there is a similar experience with a different client. Maybe locals deserve a better salon experience, or at least take Grace's advice and find a nicer place read more

Grace botched my hair cut & color. I asked for a shoulder-length cut with soft waves at the bottom. (My profile photo is the cut & color I went in asking for, it had grown out and I wanted that same style & length again.) She first cut the length too short (she agreed & apologized when I said something) and then ... I don't know what she did. During the blow out, I told her it was looking soccer mom-ish and she said I'd asked for layers and that the blowout was creating that look. I left as quickly as possible (paying the balance for a total of $198.00! And a generous tip for her and her asst, mainly because I was in a daze and upset and didn't know what to do and just needed to get out of the salon) and wet my hair as soon as I got home (while crying) to re-style. That's when I got a better look at the color, which was a mousy brown with highlights, very bland and unflattering, a color no one would ever ask for or purposely want. I called my old salon (I tried Inwood Hair Salon bc I was hoping to have a new place in the hood) and flew down there in a cab for color & cut correction. After it was re-colored, my stylist there had to straighten my hair with a flatiron just to get a proper look at what had been done. Needless to say, we were appalled. There were "chunks" of hair missing on the sides and the back looked like it had been cut with an ax with three or four uneven, chopped layers. When I emailed Grace all of the above, she wrote me a lengthy letter back saying I'd asked for layers and said I was up for something new with both the cut and color. She said she'd spent nearly 3 hours (it was 2) of her busy time on my hair and therefore would not give me a refund. We have different takes on what was said, but the facts are clear and proven in the photos attached: The color and cut did not look like what I asked for. Beyond that, the color and cut were bad. The cut especially was completely botched. I did not want my hair shorter than my shoulders -- she cut it shorter and then it had to be cut even shorter when fixed. Hair is more important to some than others. It is extremely important to me so this has been a truly awful experience. I'm sad (my hair is ruined!) and angry (it will take 4 - 6 months for Grace's "layers" to grow out!). It's a nice looking salon. There was coffee & almonds. Grace was very nice, as were her assistants. They give you lots of scalp and neck massages. But the actual work done is truly all that matters. read more

Let me first be clear. I hate getting my hair cut. I only get it done twice a year because the thought of trying out another salon, another stylist, gives me anxiety. I experience what Cory Matthews refers to as the "Haircut Cycle of Shame". "Every time I get a haircut, it looks terrible for about six weeks. I haven't gotten a haircut I've liked in the two years since I left my beloved stylist behind and moved to NYC. On top of bad experiences, I'm also in the middle of growing my hair out for the first time since I got it cut into a short punky style back in 2003. I think anyone can understand my apprehension when I took the plunge and made an appointment to get a cut--were my months of trying to grow my hair out going to go to waste for the sake of cleaning up split ends and hoping for a more cohesive style? I decided to try my luck at Inwood Hair Studio after reading the all stellar reviews, and I was not disappointed. The salon is chic, clean and inviting: really cute decor, lemon water, ice tea, coffee and snacks available, and nice ambient music. Grace did an incredible job on my hair. I'm at such an in-between stage as I grow it out that I really couldn't tell her much about what I wanted, other than asking her to cut off as little as possible and to fix the mess that was seven months of growing out a short cut. There were definitely moments where I was afraid she was taking off too much, but all my fears evaporated as soon I saw the finished cut. I absolutely love it! This is just such a gem of a hair salon... After reading stellar reviews, I decided to experience it myself. And I am SO HAPPY I did! My hair is heavy and long and basically all in one length. It just didn't have any movement or shape and I was really so ready for a haircut. Kimberly took my appointment and she was just so nice and friendly on the phone. Grace, the stylist and owner of Inwood Hair Studio gave me a warm and friendly welcome. She is not only a great hairdresser in general, but she is an absolute MASTER colorist, especially with bright fantasy colors. She is very thoughtful with her consultations and will be honest about what is and is not doable, unwilling to over-process/damage your hair or provide you with a service she has concerns about maintaining between visits. My most recent color goal required a very light base, but when my hair didn't lift as much as we needed it to, she quickly came up with a plan B and explained how and why we needed to balance the existing color, let it fade, and try to go lighter next time. Grace is a miracle worker. Can I just end the review here? Ha! Finding a good hair salon can be hellish and that goes double in New York City. There are many things you hang onto once you find a good one: a doctor, a dentist, an esthetician, and a hair dresser are on my list. Results ranged from surprisingly good to, well, be getting the worst haircut of my life in the summer of 2012. I've found great places here and there, but had yet to find "the one". My friend Lauren mentioned Inwood Hair Studio to me about a year ago. (See Lauren D's review of this salon from 7/23/2014.) She had a few great haircuts there. I really became sold after, one, Grace gave her a great balayage, and two, I saw it was just around the corner from my apartment! I booked my appointment online, which I LOVE. (I hate making phone calls.) Located on a slightly out - of - the - way side street west of Broadway and south of Dyckman, I entered into a small yet charming boutique studio. Grace literally opened me with open arms, like an old friend whom I hadn't seen in years! After a quick consultation on what to do with my hair, I received a very thorough shampoo and head massage from one of her co-workers. Grace came back and started to work on my hair. From the first snip, she cut it to the exact length I wanted. I was so surprised! Not only that, she just my hair in about seven minutes. It was PERFECT. I was long overdue for a haircut; I had not received one since December 2014 because, one, I got so busy this year, and two, I was digging the long hair for a while! I've gone chin-length before, but wanted to keep it a hair longer than that for the winter. She struck that perfect balance of just above where the neck meets the shoulders, with some layers to give it some motion. Also, could I complain about a nice little shoulder and neck massage to end the cut? No way! Finally, have I found the hair salon that I'm going to stick to, no matter what? All signs are pointing to yes! Also, at $65 for a shampoo, cut, and hairdry for long hair, my wallet did not hemerroage. For reference I have short, naturally curly hair, like long pixie style. I wanted to try someone new and saw her amazing reviews on yelp so I went ahead and set up an appointment. Grace was a bit backed up due to the previous client being late but I didn't mind because she was so nice and pleasant and made up for it. I told her what I wanted and showed her photos and she got exactly what I was trying to convey. It looked great after my appointment but weeks later, my hair looks AMAZING! The layers she gave me look so good with my rejuvenated curls, seriously, I get compliments ALL the time with how good my hair looks and it's all due to Grace! When it comes to my hair, as long as the hairstylist did a great job and gave me what I wanted I don't mind paying! With that being said prices are more than reasonable because it's by appointment and very personable. Will definitely be returning. read more

Love this place! I went in for a color with Grace a few weeks ago. She really listens and takes good care of her clients. While my hair was processing another client came in for a cut - total transformation - she looked amazing (and happy!) when she left. Love my color - very pleased. Grace has done my hair twice now and I couldn't be happier. She is friendly, efficient and very skilled. Both times I have visited her shop, Grace listened to my requests and asked lots of follow up questions to make sure we were on the same page before even touching my hair.
