It was ok--broth was fine, not the best, and many of the ingredients were subpar. Buns were only ok as well. Service was friendly. Price is about the same as other "Ramen Shop"s I prefer in the area, but Ippudo gave less in amount and quality. We ordered the sampler of buns. Veggie was just a mushy potato croquette. The pork was advertised as "melt in your mouth" but it took considerably more work than that, though the sauce was good. The chicken was rather awkward--a chunk inside a bun that didn't bite easily. When we ordered, we asked if these were easily splitable. Our waiter said "I can bring you a knife" What we got was not easily splitable, even with a knife, Soup: both is pretty ok, but not the best. The bowl is narrow at the bottom and wide at the top, so it seems like you are getting a lot, but I think the amount is significantly less than Ramen Shop and others. The toppings were mediocre. The bamboo shoots were unpleasant in taste and look. The mushrooms were rubbery. Bathroom grade: B. It's mostly clean. Single-serve, all gender room. The bottom line for me is there are other ramen shops within a block that I have not yet tried, and I certainly would before returning to Ippudo. Ippudo has been one of my top ramen spots since the first time I had it in New York. Then, I followed it to Japan, Taiwan and now Bay Area. It delivers consistency, reliability and quality no matter where you go in the world. You know that bowl of hot Japanese ramen from Ippudo will be waiting for you in the same quality. That being said, the portion size and price does vary greatly. I am particularly disappointed at the size and price in Bay area. They don't really give you much noodles but charges double that price. Nonetheless, I visited Ippudo because I had this craving for comfort food and my son is a huge ramen eater. Ippudo ramen noodles are the best. I recommend getting the tokyo wavy thicker noodles with kata (firm). Kaedama extra noodles for under $2 if you want to share with your partner. They are famous for their tonkatsu. We got the akamaru modern with with aka chili paste and garlic oil. Super flavorful and their onsen tamago egg went amazingly well. Recommend adding extra chashu pork belly as well. Their appetizers came really fast. We were counting for fun and found that we got 24 shishito peppers in our appetizer. Very generous and flavorful (salted, and spiced). For Chicken Karaage, we got 3 big pieces of chicken with small salad and 1 shishito pepper. Crispy and juicy inside, just perfect. Ippudo is the best place for ramen. We've basically stopped chasing all the new ramen places popping up because they aren't better than the classic. The tonkotsu broth here is the best, very flavorful without having to be too salty. I do like the wavy noodles, which unfortunately they don't give with the Shiromaru classic. But I did really enjoy the wavy noodles with the miso ramen. The newer places have broths that have a new (and often lighter) twist, but for us the classic heavier pork broth is the most flavorful. read more

Went here with my best friend after a movie, and it was the perfect ramen experience. The ramen - filling and delicious. It brought tears to my eyes (and snot to my nose). The water service was excellent. I stayed so hydrated. The napkins are sturdy. Service is also excellent. Tens across the board. My only complaint is that it was not clear if the people at the table next to us were on a first date or not. Many conflicting signals: they were talking about business, but they ordered sake and looked a little shy? We both got the Karaka Spicy. It comes with most of the spice piled in the middle, so you can set some aside if you want a less memorable experience. WHEN: Saturday @5:45pm What it seems, as long as you arrive before 6pm, there is no wait. There is a limit of 10 parties indoor and about 3 tables outdoor. There's an option of being placed on the waitlist via Yelp if you are 15-30 min away. Parking was decent. When I got there there was about 3 metered spots right in front. I suppose with it still sort of the pandemic (May 2021), and it's a tad early for dinner, there's not that many people out for dining. Before going in, they check your temperature and you order from their menu online (they have a QR code on the table to scan). Dress warm because it's cold inside--they leave the doors open I guess to constantly air out the place. The place seemed understaffed with just 2 staff members waiting the tables and it was a "full house". It's been so long since I've eaten here so I don't remember much. Here's what I ordered: AKAMARU MODERN - $14.80 A more bold translation of the original pork broth, thin noodles topped with Ippudo's secret "Umami Dama" miso paste, pork belly chashu, cabbage, sesame kikurage mushrooms, and scallions. Even though it labeled as spicy, it really isn't. There's maybe a slight subtle chili flavor but even a big wimp like me can handle it. The thin noodles was a nice change, and with all the bean sprouts and mushroom, it gives it a nice texture. I love the amount of scallions in the bowl which makes it refreshing. As for the pork belly chasu, some parts was tender and some were chewy, but since it feels like there's never enough of it, the egg makes up for that. It's a decent sized bowl and the broth was rich and tasty. ONSEN TAMAGO - $1.50 This is an additional topping of Poached egg. I forget they offer 2 kinds of eggs: this plain and wonderfully super delegate and perfect poached egg. The other is the seasoned egg you normally see in most ramen. I thought of getting the poached egg since there's already lots of flavor and a good amount of salt in the ramen. This was probably my first ramen experience where we don't feel rush to leave, haha! It took awhile before we received the check and it's probably because they may be understaffed. We used to dine in here all the time before COVID, but since then we've ordered takeout more. Can definitely say that takeout just isn't as good as eating there in person. Yesterday, we decided to swing by and eat in-person outdoors, where they have 1 table and 4 chairs. It's been a while since visiting Ippudo - my last visit was Dec 2018. To me, they were always a 3 when it comes to the taste. The service is always a 5 there - maybe because I don't require water refills. I get thirsty maybe 30 minutes after I leave the restaurant. They no longer offer firmness options for your ramen - a huge bummer for those that like it al dente. The broth is alright. I really enjoyed the piping hot broth though - the highlight of the meal for me. It was around $50 for 2 bowls of ramen and extra noodles on the side including tax and tip. Even though Ippudo was less than a block from my work for years and years, I associate it solely with a very particular lunch our bargaining team enjoyed (or tried to enjoy) here while we were in the middle of hammering out our first contract. I think I came once after that, and many people started talking about it as ramen restaurants got trendier and trendier, but slurping delicious noodley broth from here will always remind me of 2018 and Erin (?) being worried about forgetting her bag in the compartment at the bottom of the chair--she worried about it so much that she did end up forgetting it and had to go back to retrieve it. The food is very good. The service doesn't really exist. Once you have your food, you're supposed to eat quickly so that you're not wasting their valuable real estate on food you've already purchased from them so why do they care whether you're comfortable? That's the distinct impression I got, anyway. Most diners seem happy to ignore the silent-but-palpable pressure to finish. Not me, but I appreciate others' ability to be strategically oblivious. When I found out that there was an Ippudo in Berkeley, I knew that I had to give it a try. It took me a while, but I finally made it there. I knew that it wasn't going to be a good as Ippudo NY, but I couldn't believe how lackluster their ramen was. I stopped by on a week night and it wasn't too busy. I was seated right away and given a menu. I already knew what I wanted but decided to look over the menu anyways. The first thing that I noticed was that the Akamaru Modern didn't come with a soft-boiled egg or corn. Womp womp. It wouldn't have been a big deal, but both items costed an additional $2 each? Say whaaat? Why are y'all over here nickel and diming people like this? I kinda can't have my ramen without these items, so I got them anyways. The ramen came out fast... like almost too fast. There was no steam coming out of the bowl. Sure enough, it was lukewarm. I had originally told my server that I wanted my ramen spicy. I guess they don't really make it spicy? She recommended that I add sriracha or chili paste. Hmm... okay. When my ramen arrived, it did have a little bit of chili paste in the middle. It didn't really do much though. Took my soup spoon and dug it into the broth. So, so, sooooo disappointing. The broth barely even had any flavor. Can you imagine... lukewarm broth that's practically flavorless? As if that wasn't bad enough, the noodles were not up to par either. I went with their signature noodles which are made al dente style. I could not believe how overly chewy these damn noodles were! Waaay too firm and it just wasn't appetizing. The chashu was very fatty and didn't have much substance to it. Basically, this bowl of ramen was pretty bad. I mean, I've definitely had worse but I expected so much more from Ippudo. Honestly, I wanted to be nice and give them 3 stars because the staff was really sweet. Perfect. The noodles hold the flavor of the broth. They are the perfect texture, firm but not crunchy. The broth is amazing. I wish I had written the type of ramen down. The seasonal Ramen is the best and is the photo. It has the best broth and does not taste like pork. In addition, the egg was cooked well and the sweet/sour pork is an excellent blend of sweet and sour. The service is quick and the setting can be intimate. Upon my move back to California (both SoCal and NorCal) I never really found a place that truly lived up to my beloved Ippudo NY. However, after being away for almost a decade, I kept seeing people dining at an Ippudo Berkeley. Could it be my beloved Ippudo was just 30 minutes away from my hometown? I was desperate to check them out and see. We were a party of four, all first time visitors, and came in on a Friday night around 6:00 pm. We lucked out and just beat the crowds as we were seated promptly upon arrival. The hostess was extremely welcoming and service from then on was exceptional. We were quickly attended to and our server frequently checked in us and made sure our first experience was memorable. I ended up ordering the Cal Ramen. I placed pressure on myself to try this Berkeley exclusive dish, and perhaps, that may be where some of my disappointment came from. Our server hyped it up, so I went with the recommendation and 'exclusiveness' of the dish. Although very tasty, it was lacking the magic I was expecting. The broth was not as flavorful as I had hoped, my egg was overcooked (and I ordered an extra one that was also overcooked), and although I ordered my noodles firm, they were not quite there. I did come in with high expectations hoping they would live up to their New York counterpart, but left feeling like they had missed the mark. I would give them another try and order my favorite Karaka Spicy to make that comparison. On a positive note, Ippudo Berkeley was one of the better ramen spots I have tried here in the Bay Area. Much tinier than San Francisco and the locations in New York. There's no bar and communal seating. Since there's not much space, it's pretty loud. Just not a cool vibe. My sister wanted to try the Truffle Fries. Not really different from the fries at Habit Burger. The ketchup was delicious. A curious thang! The menu had a few bowls exclusive to the Berkeley location, however I just got the same Akamaru Modern (extra firm noodles) and kae-dame. Shared a bit with my sibling Service was okay. Not quite the attention you expect to receive at Ippudo. Had to ask a server a few times for stuff. To be fair it was busy and I counted only three staff on the floor and one host. I'd just had a great service at Ippudo in The City last Friday with my friend Angela M, so I'm a little biased. Yes, parking is terrible in downtown. Too bad the new udon shop is open for lunch yet. I ordered their Karaka Spicy Ramen; which is their Tonkotsu broth with an added kick to it. And yes, the kick will kick. So if you aren't a fan of spicy, I don't recommend you ordering this bowl for yourself. My boyfriend ordered their Akamaru; which tasted "bold" (as stated on their menu). Both broths were creamy and lived up to their description on the menu. Sadly, not every ramen comes with an egg. Presentation of the ramen- worth a picture! P.s. Ramen was fine but service was not good. The atmosphere was typical Ramen- a bit crowded with multiple parties and large tables.
