I have had several problems that Dr Chang took care of, one involving a difficult to diagnose broken root of a tooth that needed to be identified so it could be approved by insurance for extraction, and a few years after that, she got involved with a complicated problem where a tooth supporting a bridge had to have a root canal. The tooth was infected and the bridge had to be removed and the tooth worked on. Very touch and go, especially due to problems I have taking antibiotics which she carefully addressed. Dr Chang was incredibly talented and succeeded far beyond my expectations in meeting these two daunting challenges. I cannot begin to express my gratitude. She has great staff as well and a beautiful office overlooking a street of palm trees. But most important was her skill, her experience, and her positive attitude. She helped me believe I had a chance of eliminating my pain and having my teeth restored to health. Dr Chang was a pleasure to work with, very upbeat and willing to go the extra mile. On a weekend my bridge fell out after the first part of the root canal, and she had given me an emergency number that she herself picked up, the came into the office to reglue to bridge. If you get referred to Dr Chang for a problem your dentist cannot handle, you are in excellent hands. read more

I had a tooth pain for about five days and saw my dentist finally and she referred me to Dr Chang. It was already Thursday afternoon when I called and explained to Donna that I might need root canal and I am in pain. Donna immediately held a spot for me on next day and told me she had allowed enough time in case I do need root canal to be done. I showed up in excruciating pain by then and Dr Chang was so patient and explained everything in details what and how she will proceed to find out where the pain is. They quoted me a cash price for the whole visit then because she find out my tooth cannot be salvaged she gave me another cheaper quote. To me, I would not have known any better even if they had charged me the full price. What a honest office. The whole three hours they spent on my visit was so worth the price. She was so patient trying to numb me after I required so many extra injections for numbing. I cannot say more but to thank her awesome staff, Donna and Dr Chang for being there for a patient in dying need for their help. read more

My first visit. Wow great experience. Donna at the phones and front desk, was super polite and detail oriented. She was thoroughly informative and gave me all the information I needed including prices at the first call. She didn't rush me or try to upsell. When I arrived she gave full eye contact kind greeting and kept everything super clean and organized down to the clipboard. She even called when they were running late and asked if I could arrive a few minutes later, perfect for me to go shopping at Vromans in the playhouse district of Pasadena. The parking is free and is just north of the building in an uncovered half of the lot. Easy parking. Her office is on the third floor on the south facing balcony with exam rooms with beautiful north facing views of the mountains. Very calming view. Dr. Chang was very thorough and articulate about her description of work needed and careful when evaluating and treating. They accepted my Delta Dental insurance and accepted my fleece account payment card. Most relaxing root canal ever. If a root canal could be pleasant, they did all they could to make sure it was both safe and comfortable. I HIGHLY recommend this office! read more

I had to have my first root canal ever. My dentist referred me to Dr. Chang. The level of service I received in her office was pretty stellar. Dr. Chang took the time to explain to me what to expect during the procedure. She does have a heavy accent but when I experienced difficulty understanding her I asked her patiently to repeat. Root canals are by nature very unpleasant! Dr. Chang made sure I was numb as hell before she proceeded. It took what seemed like many injections to get me there. It wasn't a problem after the first shot. Throughout the procedure she checked in with me to make sure I wasn't in pain. The problem tooth had a crown on it, which she had to replace after the procedure. I did need to adjust my bite after that. My regular dentist tried and it was still bothering me, so I went back to her and she was so adept at adjusting it. After that? No pain whatsoever. I can now drink liquids without it bumming me out. I had been dreading the prolonged pain that some patients experience after a root canal but I've been happy as a clam, which I didn't think I would say. Dr. Chang rocked it! read more

Dr. Chang and her staff are absolutely wonderful! I had to get a retreatment of a root canal done on a very infected tooth. I was in such pain. The doctor was able to see me on the start of this whole corona mess which was definitely scary, but not once did her staff or herself make me feel uneasy. I had to be put on antibiotics and had to see the doctor twice for emergency pain I was feeling . Mind you this was all during the closure of all dental offices. Dr.Chang always made herself available to me and never once did I feel forgotten about. Her staff is incredible as is she! She is so knowledgeable and has such an incredibly light touch. I went to see Dr. Chang the day before Thanksgiving because an old filling in one of my morals had cracked and come out. I had put off visiting the dentist and now required a root canal. Though I was originally quiet scared to have a root canal, Dr. Chang showed me I had no reason to be. She genuinely listened to my concerns, throughly answered all my questions and made sure I was comfortable during the procedure. For the first time ever, I actually fell asleep while getting dental work done. She is an amazing doctor and I recommend her to anyone needing root canal work done. read more

I wish I could give Dr. Irene Chang more stars. She is one of the best endodontists that I've come across and I've seen many as I didn't take care of my teeth when I was a kid. My friend referred me to Dr. Chang when my general dentist said I had a molar that was infected and needed to be extracted. This tooth had a root canal done before. He said my tooth had a 30% chance of being saved and that I should just extract it and get an implant. I was devastated because I was not expecting that news as my molar wasn't hurting at all. When Dr. Chang looked at my tooth, she discovered that the reason my molar had an infection was because my tooth has unique gum lining with little pockets at the end. The endodontist who did the original root canal missed that and so an infection developed. After 3 months of treatment, my tooth is stronger and the gum around the tooth is better. I have had a particularly disappointing and troublesome all-around experience with Dr. Chang's office. Three years ago, she performed a root canal on me. The procedure took nearly four hours, which, as it was my first root canal, I didn't consider to be unusual. Last month, the same tooth began causing me severe pain. I consulted my general dentist, who took x-rays of the tooth and was unable to identify a cause of the problem. He referred me back to Dr. Chang. I arrived at the office in tremendous pain, and I was greeted rudely by Donna, the receptionist, who initially told me they would be unable to see me. When I requested a recommendation for another endodontist, she chastised me for being upset, before offering to squeeze me in. At this point, even though I was a prior patient, she asked me to fill out a surprisingly extensive amount of paperwork. The next step was a scan of my mouth, which, to my surprise, was performed by Donna, the receptionist. She may have a certification of some kind, but the scan failed twice before another assistant was able to complete it. Neither the scan, nor subsequent x-rays revealed the cause of my pain, and Dr. Chang was unable to provide me with any assistance. My pain continued for a week before my tooth began to bleed. I scheduled another appointment, where Dr. Chang informed me that there was an 80% chance that I had a fractured root in the tooth (even though it was invisible to all scans and x-rays) and would require an extraction and implant. If my pain didn't subside on it's own, her instructions were to find an oral surgeon to remove the tooth. I sought a second opinion from another endodontist, who improved my odds of needing an extraction to 50/50 and described in clear detail what the plan of action would be. The fractured root was one possibility. The other was that the root canal had failed and would need to be retreated. My 2nd opinion removed the crown from my tooth, determined the cause to be a failed root canal, and re-treated it (in 45 minutes). All pain went away almost immediately and no surgery was necessary. Dr. Chang's original root canal failed after just 3 years. The office staff behaved rudely to a patient who was in pain. The receptionist is performing scans that reveal no information and charging patients for them. Dr. Chang misdiagnosed the problem and recommended a course of action that was extensive, invasive, permanent, expensive, and utterly unnecessary. I will never return to this office and I will be speaking with my dentist about referring future patients to her. read more

I really wished I would have listened to my inner voice and the bad Yelp reviews for Dr. Chang. My experience with her was not good and I wouldn't want anyone else to go through what I did. She was recommended to me by my regular dentist for a root canal. I plan on having a conversation with my dentist about Dr. Chang so she knows what I went through. On my first visit, I was told to arrive at 9:45 but she didn't actually see me till 10:45. During this time, I sat in the waiting room though they did have my x-rays done during the waiting time. Note that the xrays were started by her dental assistant who was then called out of the room by Dr. Chang so the office manager, Donna, finished them. Is she certified or licensed to do so? I was finally called in to see Dr. Chang who attempted to explain the root canal procedure to me. She speaks very fast and with a heavy accent so I processed about 25% of what she was saying to me. On the day of the root canal, I arrived and again she was running late. I was already anxious and this sent me over the edge. After two hours into the root canal, Dr. Chang stood up and in her very fast, heavily accented voice, told me that she couldn't complete the root canal because the tooth was cracked. I would need an implant. She left the room and that was that. Suffice to say, the tooth developed a minor infection a few days later (I was given no instructions or antibiotics when I left her office.) I called her office and was told rather rudely by Donna the office manager, that there was nothing they could do. That the doctor had told me I needed an implant and that's what I needed to do. End of Story. Nothing else. Done. I called my regular dentist and she put me on antibiotics right away. She also sent me to an oral surgeon. Ultimately, I ended up having the tooth pulled and an implant put in. To add further insult, Dr. Chang had overcharged me for both visits. "We'll refund you depending on what insurance pays." The two visits took place in late October and early November. Insurance processed the claims by November 11. I called about my refund and was given the run around with claims of "we don't have the insurance paperwork yet" to "the accountant is sick" to "I'm not sure what is going on." I received my refund check on December 28 after several phone calls. Please do not use this endodontist even if your dentist recommends her. She doesn't explain things, is impatient and hard to understand. Her office manager is kind but ineffective. If I could give no stars I would. read more

Yesterday I went to Irene Chang, DDS office for the treatment of a possibly infected tooth. Donna was gentle and friendly. She brought me to one of the treatment rooms, settled me at the patient chair, then handed me a fee estimation for this visit, and asked me to sign on the paper. The total fee was about $400, including a few items, something like $25, $180 for an evaluation, and $200 for a scan. As I questioned, Donna replied the scan was not covered by insurance, and the other items covered partially. So I requested for replacing that scan with a different technology that would be covered by my insurance, like X-ray, etc. Donna became slow minded. She kept talking around and around, "no, it is what we do, we cannot change the code, ...", again and again. I told her that I know I agreed to pay for that scan in the past, but today I would not, and I would leave. (I went to this office twice before. In the second visit, I was asked to pay for that type of scan so that Doctor Chang can see the tooth better). My insurance is Delta PPO which has one of the top insurance coverage policies, it would cover that scan if the scan is actually necessary. I felt that scan machine was like their bank account, so I apologized for any inconvenience, then left the office. read more

I love Dr. Chang! She and her support staff are exceptional, every detail of the patient plan was throughly explained - from the appointment scheduling, to the visit, to the checkout - no detail was omitted. I am extremely difficult with anesthesia, it's hard to numb me and it takes the doctor a while so I come in earlier as to not inconvenience the other patients. Once I'm numb, she has to work quickly before it wears off... My experience has been virtually pain free, even after the root canal, I only needed one Advil! If you ever need a root canal, head to this office, by pass the other dentists, you will never be disappointed. Dr. Chang is the best!!!! I had my first appointment today with Dr. Chang. She is very knowledgeable and efficient which helped me to be comfortable. Her staff is great and all worked together very well. I will go back to Dr Chang in a couple of weeks to start a root canal, in the meantime she prescribed a antibiotic to clear up an infection, which she spotted on a scan, before I go back to see her. ..The worst dental experience of my life! She caused me undue pain, the process was poorly communicated to me, and I spent way too many hours fixing what should have taken half the time. I went in to see Dr. Chang for a Root Canal, her staff was friendly, but I don't know if she was having a bad day, all she did throughout the treatment was yell at her staff, she kept leaving the room to yell at them. On top of being nervous, that made me more uncomfortable. She rushed me out the office and did not explain the work she did. Her assistant was very friendly and explained the treatment to me.I don't know how they can work in that hostile evironment I will never go back there again!! read more

Not only is Dr. Irene Chang an outstanding dental professional, but she is also a kind, gentle, and caring person. I have had three major experiences with her -- the last being the most challenging. I am so grateful to her for all she did to save a cracked molar with a crown on it. She even spent meticulous time adjusting my bite over several months in order to alleviate any pressure on the compromised molar. I'm quite certain that no other dentist or endodontist would have gone that extra mile. And that extra mile has made all the difference. read more

I scheduled with Dr. Chang upon the recommendation of my dentist. I have worked with her before on a difficult root canal. She was not able to access all the roots on the tooth of concern and I concluded that it was an impossible task. Recently I worked with her on another root canal. Again, she was not able to access all the roots in question. She attempted to knock out a bridge (without permission) to access the root. Thank God, the bridge wouldn't budge. She told me that the bridge would need to come out and to have my regular dentist remove it and then contact her to finish the procedure. I sought a second opinion and the work was completed by that person, eficiently, with less pain, and the bridge was left intact. The large bill I received from Dr. Chang (which was over half the cost of the whole procedure had it been done successfully) described the root canal on the tooth as "inoperable" and "unrestorable." When I questioned the use of these terms, I was told by one of her staff members that these words were commonly used when there was an "incomplete" procedure. I was also told that patients "almost never" completed their procedure somewhere else. Next time I need a procedure, I will skip Dr. Chang, and go directly to the other specialist. read more

Dr. Chang deserves more than 5 stars. She is an outstanding professional and she truly cares about her patients, and most importantly, she wants to save your tooth! I not only speak for myself but for my husband as well, who also had a root canal done by Dr. Chang. I had a problem molar, which had 2 prior root canals done. This was back in August of 2014. The dentist who referred me to Dr. Chang had given me antibiotics but they were slow to work. Dr. Chang changed my prescription and we had to wait until the infection subsided before she could do the surgery. That night the pain was so bad she was on the phone with me even at 10 p.m. and offered to meet me at her office. I decided I would wait a bit longer for the antibiotic and pain medication to take effect and thank God they did, but it was so nice of her to be available and she showed such concern! A couple of days later,, the surgery lasted about two hours and it required major work (I will spare you the details...) I felt super comfortable and taken care of. Dr. Chang's dental assistant and Donna, her front office person, were top notch. I was never made to wait more than a reasonable amount of time and Dr. Chang always made double and triple sure to check absolutely everything before, during and after the surgery to make sure I was well on my way to a full recovery. Three years after the surgery, she has followed up with me about 4 times and takes X-rays to make sure the bone growth is adequate. This week I went in to see her again because my dentist referred me to her for another possible root canal. She did many tests and a thorough examination and it was decided I did not need a root canal. She had me come back to double check, made some adjustments to the tooth and I feel much better. I can guarantee you that she will do whatever is necessary to save your tooth and will always, always explain everything in great detail. Yes, she does speak English with a non-native accent, but if you tell her to please speak slowly and to explain things to you again, she will, and ALWAYS with a smile on her face. I have had 6 root canals done in my life and I can state without reservation that Dr. Chang is truly the best endodontist who has treated me. Thank you Dr. Chang and staff! read more
