They helped us understand the progression of late-stage Parkinson's and the Lewy Body Dementia that often accompanies it. The residence manager, Misha, has apparently been in charge there for over 18 years now and has seen most everything and knows how to manage residents, medical situations and families in addition to Covid protocols. She is strong and highly capable, communicative and caring. She and the rest of the staff were very willing to cooperate with the nurses and therapists that visited Dad frequently and to carry on any therapies that they prescribed. You only have to encourage the therapists to teach the staff whatever it is they would like them to do. Avalon has a good relationship with a PA working under authority of a Dr to meet medical needs that arise at the home if you choose to use those services. While the communication with the PA must be done through the Avalon staff, several times they responded to same-day visit needs and were able to arrange in-home x-rays, labs and other services as well as to provide prescription orders. Avalon prefers to use Glenview Professional Pharmacy, which is the best local pharmacy in the long-term care business, I learned from experiences with my own parents. Go with them. Toward the end, we decided to use Total Hospice which has a good relationship with Avalon. They, too, said that from all the places they go to provide hospice services, Avalon's Royal Circle was one of the very best and most communicative when the resident had a need. Having had my own parents in Assisted Living (AL) for a number of years, I was quite impressed with the value that Avalon provided. My father-in-law received a very high level of care for a single all-inclusive monthly cost that was identical to my mother's cost for AL with minimal added services in a Northern suburb. To get that level of service in an AL facility would have cost thousands more, if it was even available. Skilled nursing would have cost almost double, and full-time home care even more than that. My mother-in-law would have preferred to be her husband's caregiver but that was simply impossible with his high level of need. She had experienced having Aides at the house and how it felt invasive and she still exhausted herself giving care. Ultimately he would have been confined to bed at home, whereas at Avalon he could get help from two people to get dressed and up to enjoy meals at the dining table, TV in the recliners as well as conversation with the staff. They were skilled in redirecting and calming him when hallucinations or delusions would agitate him. I think the highest praise is the fact that my mother-in-law feels she made the right decision and has peace about it now that he is gone.

    My wife was at this facility for about a year in 2023 to 2024. She apparently fell in the bathroom…read moreone night when the aides got her up to use the bathroom. The night aides dragged her from the bathroom and put her back in bed even though she was in obvious pain. The aides did not alert management, write up an incident report, or notify hospice, emergency services, or me. I would not have know what happened except I had a camera in the bedroom. Video is available showing the aides dragging her back to her bed. The rooms and common area were not kept particularly clean. Bathrooms where not kept clean. My advice is to look elsewhere for a suitable facility for your loved one.

Since that time the facility changed management & became The Preston of the Park Cities. My mother has been a resident since the place first opened as Harbor Chase. The place is gorgeous and they are far more creative with their food and menus than any other place we initially looked at. Although there has been turnover in staff over the years, the best key players on staff stayed & have become real assets to the place. When Covid hit we were tremendously concerned about how this would be dealt with and how the residents would be protected. Watermark, who is the management company have done a phenomenal job handling the pandemic and keeping residents safe and their families well informed. The staff & residents were fully vaccinated by late January. Finding a great place for a parent, spouse or relative who needs assistance can be a very trying time in everyone's life. You'd be hard pressed to find a better place for them than The Preston of the Park Cities.

The facility is upscale. They know the residents and show so much grace and respect. There is always activity - singing or shows. When it's time for a facility like this you want to trust that your loved one is happy and safe. This is a wonderful choice.

    After visiting several senior living communities, I chose Monticello West for my mom because they…read moreoffered an "enhanced assisted living" option, which was supposed to accommodate residents needing two-person transfers. I was also impressed early on, especially with Nan who was responsive and helpful in answering all my questions. Things started off okay, but one issue showed up pretty quickly. My mom uses a wheelchair and needed help getting to and from the dining room. Staff would take her down for meals, and when she was ready to return to her room, she'd press the button on her fob for assistance. On multiple occasions, she was left waiting alone in the dining room for over an hour. This was frustrating and embarrassing for her. There was also a staff member who pushed my mom to do more than she was physically capable of. Something happened (I was never told exactly what), but I was informed that the person was written up and instructed not to go back to my mom's room. Additionally, Nan stopped replying to my emails, and messages to other staff were often ignored too. We had an initial meeting where I was told I'd be introduced to all the department heads. Only a couple of people showed up; apparently my mom wasn't considered important enough for the full team. The director, Tom, was not present and I had no contact with him until I gave notice to move my mom elsewhere. To her credit, Sandra, who managed my mom's floor, was always responsive to my emails and phone calls. However, about a year into my mom's stay, she called to tell me they could no longer meet my mom's needs. She said that my mom now needed more than two people to assist with transfers. I asked how much time I had to find a new facility, and she said, "About two weeks." That's not what the contract says, but at that point, I didn't want my mom to stay somewhere that couldn't or wouldn't care for her properly. My mom later told me they'd recently hired a bunch of new staff who weren't well trained, so sometimes it would take 3 or 4 of them to transfer her. They would also gather in her room to chat with each other. Ironically, just a few days after Sandra's call, I saw one of the experienced caregivers transfer my mom by herself, quickly and with care. When I asked her how she did it, she smiled and said, "Patience." I found another facility and scheduled my mom's move for a Sunday. Since her birthday was the day before, I asked about reserving a room for a small celebration. I was told that due to Covid concerns, no rooms were available. That was fine; I told my mom's friends we'd meet outside on the patio to play it safe. Several of her guests, most of whom were senior citizens, told me that Laura (the activities director) raised her voice at them and told them they weren't allowed to be there. She also raised her voice at me. I explained we were outside and following all the rules, but it didn't seem to matter. The whole thing left a really bad taste. After we moved my mom out and cleared her room, I asked when I'd receive the refund for the unused portion of the month's rent. I mentioned that I had accidentally taken her fob and would return it as soon as I could. Tom implied I wouldn't be refunded for the days I had the fob, which seemed petty, but the facility eventually processed the full refund. Still, it wasn't the kind of support I needed during such a stressful transition. To be fair, some staff were wonderful. Kam, TT, Cynthia, and Willis were kind, respectful, and truly cared about my mom. The maintenance guys and housekeeping team were always polite and helpful. Thankfully, my mom is now in a facility that truly values her. They care for her with patience and compassion. When friends visit, they're welcomed, not scolded. Phone calls and emails are returned. When my mom needs help, she gets it within minutes, versus hours. She's happy now, and that makes me happy too. (It should be noted that I took a tour of Monticello West's sister facility, Autumn Leaves, as recommended by Sandra. It reeked of urine and was one of the most depressing places I have ever visited.) Looking back, I wish I'd installed a camera in her room at Monticello West from day one. If you have a loved one there, I strongly recommend you do.

Although she is VERY happy with all aspects of where she lives (residence, food, activities, maintenance, technology help, classes, field trips) she wanted me to put up a review about a few special people who not only do their job with skill, but also caring and grace. A big high five to Daniela Mora in Conley restaurant. She knows everyone by name and greets all with a big smile - she seems to keep the restaurant running like a top (as least as far as residents can see!) and the food is always served hot and well-presented. Mom thinks she is the best she's the best Conley has every had! Dani is kind and patient and helps everyone! Second is Brandon in IT (I don't know his last name - sorry). Talk about a problem solver! No question is too hard or too simple. Brandon stays with a problem until he figures it out for you. Last is Kevin Nelson - the porter at the Point. Kevin magically makes every event, class, discussion group seem to be set up and taken down with just the right room arrangement in incredibly timely manner. It's amazing how many different "take downs and put ups" he does in one day. He is friendly and always speaks to everyone. He keeps everything clean and fresh - including the gym and class rooms. Mom thinks he's a gem. These are just a few of the amazing people who make CC Young work so well - In my mom's eyes, it's a great place to live and from the outside - I definitely agree!

What is Simpson Place? It is an assisted living and skilled nursing community that offers care and support for low- and moderate-income senior adults. I assure you that this location looks & feels like an upscale hotel. You are greeted by friendly faces when you step in the door. The lobby is spacious and full of energy. The dining area is open, beautifully decorated, and clean. Even though I did not get to see the food, the menu offered healthy and alternative options. The community space had comfortable seating, by a bookcase and fireplace, very nice! The activities room was large and obviously used often. A resident said hello and expressed how much she enjoys living there (that was a huge plus!). As a resident, you get a 1 bedroom studio apartment. It's comforting to know that if skilled nursing is needed at some point, that service is available in the same building. I visited the rehab area and could see that the equipment was new, clean, the overall setup was impressive. What you really want to know is ... how much does it cost? Maybe nothing! Let Cory work with you and discover what you qualify for. In my case, I was thrilled to learn they accept Molina and Superior Star Plus waiver (Medicaid programs). You can certainly do private pay which is 3,000 a month. Either way, this includes the utilities, cable, wifi, housekeeping, daily activities, three meals a day plus 24\7 security. The staff taking care of your loved ones are all licensed CNA'S, CMA'S and LVN'S, who also manage the medications. In addition, there is a doctor who visits the communities.     I have 8 years of experience managing my mother's dementia care in 3 different memory care. What I…read morelearned is this disease is difficult to manage, even in the best of situations. I've seen poor facilities and just ok facilities, but never great ones. So my expectations are low. But Tradition has scored a zero for their care of my mother in law. Three times in the past month we have called the facility and never got through to the staff on her floor. Terminal hold, phone systems down, etc. I asked the receptionist for the direct number to the memory care floor, but was told all calls have to go through the receptionist. Translation "We won't give you that number". My sister-in-law put a video camera in her mom's room so she knows when her mom has fallen and needs staff assistance. The 3 times she needed help, we could not get through to anyone to let them know.

As long as you don't need assistance, you would be happy there. My mother was given a call button on a wrist band. From the beginning, it never worked. They would tell her it was fine, If one of us talked to them about it, they always said the battery must be low. They moved her upstairs to memory care. At times there could be a room full of residents with not one care partner in the room and the TV blaring. After my mother was in a wheelchair, I was visiting and she said she needed to use the restroom. It took me a while to find someone to help her, when I did, she said she wasn't her CP (Care Partner) I asked who it was, where they were and was told she was on break. I continued to tell her my Mother needed to use the restroom and she finally said she'd do it. She walked up to my Mother and said, well, she's got a diaper on, and told her to just go in her diaper. When she would ask to go to her room after lunch, they wouldn't let her. They kept her door locked, they kept everyone's doors locked because it was easier for them. When I asked why she could not go to her room, they said because they couldn't get her out. My Gosh, she was in a wheelchair, they could just roll her out. There was one particular CP that when she would get my Mother ready for bed. I could hear my Mother screaming. Only with this lady. I spoke to someone in the office to request she not be assigned to my Mother. My mother told me that she pinched her and had the marks on her arms to show. She also said she would punch her in the stomach. The manager said she would take care of it. Next time I was in town, she was still her PC. For a period of time, my Mother was having falls early in the morning. When my sister spoke to someone to see why this was happening, they told her it was because they got her up at 5am and she was left alone because it was around the time the staff changed. My sister asked why they would get her up at 5 and was told that the family requested it. We asked that they not wake her up before 8, and not to worry about breakfast, we would rather let her sleep. She was never an early riser and never wanted to eat first thing.
