Now that Banter is gone, this place should've jumped at the chance to live up to it's full potential and become the neighborhood Irish bar. But it falls completely flat. It's dingy, it smells, it looks old (and not in a cute antique way). The staff literally do not know what they are doing (and that includes the owner/managers). I booked the large dining table at this restaurant for seven people one week in advance for October 1st 23 for seven people around 3 pm. Most people in our party ordered the fish and chips which although was tasty the portion of food on each plate was suitable only for children. One person in our party ordered a steak. Despite several inquiries on the matter to the staff, messages to the kitchen and complaints he still was not served his meal long after the others had completed theirs and in fact never received any food at all before our party left the restaurant to the considerable embarrassment of our family who had invited these people for lunch that day. Two of our party ordered Bloody Mary cocktails . One person returned hers because she only tasted water and tomato juice. The other person had the same experience but just left her drink on the table without drinking it. On leaving and after paying my bill I asked to speak to the manager/ owner to be told he was not in fact working that day. I then made a request that he call me at his earliest convenience as I wanted to discuss our afternoon experience. I'm still waiting for that call. I have since discovered that the chef of the restaurant is in fact the actual owner so go figure that. I do have praise for the two waitresses who appeared quite stressed trying to solve our problem and being unable to do so despite their many requests to the kitchen. I guess once he has your money, your dining experience at his establishment does not matter whatever to this owner. What a pity. My Irish food's cherry has been popped! Last Sunday, Big daddy Dio and I shared the giant pretzel appetizer - so soft, buttery and warm. Comes with mustard and beer cheese on the side. It seems ginormous but it's so good that before we know it, 3/4s had vamooshed! For the main dish, I ordered the Shepard pie's, it's a rich braised beef filling with peas and carrots nestled in a hearty gravy loaded with flaky crusted mashed potatoes on top. Absolutely phenomenal!!! The entree size is enough to feed 2 hangryyy souls. As per our waitress' recommendation, Big daddy got the mushroom burger with BBQ sauce - he likes it well-done and surprisingly it was really good. Washed it down with Guinness and some Indian pale beers. Our waitress was super nice. Appreciated her recommendations, they were spot on. Huge portions for the price. Awesome value. Was trying to pop in here for some drinks with 3 other friends while waiting for our take out food at a nearby local pizza place. The manager or owner or whoever it was, said they didn't have their liquor license. There were two other couples sitting outside drinking beer and having a good time. (both white couples) At first I wanted to believe her because this kind of thing can't still happen in today's time and age. However as the conversation went on, it was clear she had a strong opinion against Asians and was refusing to serve us. This has never happened to me before so I was shocked and very offended all at the same time. You can have an opinion and reserve judgement internally imo, but don't reflect it outwards in the form of racial prejudice with your business if you're going to run one. Wreaks of blatant racism. Go ANYWHERE but here if you are a minority or you care about anyone in your life who is a minority. (I'm white, my husband is Latin). It seems they've had this issue for years. I'm very grateful I saw this before spending our money there. It doesn't matter if you're a millionaire or what status you have, they don't want to serve you if you're a minority or with a minority. How sad this exists in 2021 in NYC of all places. I went in with my husband and the little bar lady (two crayons short of a full box of Crayolas) said they "didn't have their liquor license" and I was pretty naive at first and joked and said "What are they drinking then? Regular juice and just having a good time?" Because I'm white, I am not used to blatant micro-aggressions that minorities have to endure like this.. All the people there who were drinking (I smelled the liquor) were... tada.. not minorities. My husband shrugged it off and some cocky white guy at the bar said to the barwench, "Doesn't he know this is an IRISH bar?" (We all know what he was implying) and laughed and the little genius barhead snickered with him. It clicked for me after that as we walked out down the block. Woman at the front said that they didn't have their liquor license..... meanwhile the caucasian couple sitting outdoors were definitely enjoying their glasses of beer. -____- In this day and age I really don't think restaurants have the luxury of denying people based on their race. It was super blatant and left a sour taste in my mouth in my new neighborhood. Heard they shut down during COVID and then reopened...some things are better left shut down. Decided to grab some food to go and was very happy with my order. Ordered via the bartender who was very nice and grabbed a drink while waiting. Ordered chicken fingers, burger, and mozzarella sticks. Chicken was lightly breaded and hot. Burger had good flavor and nice proportion of melted cheese. Only issue was it was ordered medium rare it was closer to medium well. Mozzarella sticks were light and the marinara was piping hot. The wedge fries were seasoned nice and very tasty. It's just another typical Irish pub here. The wait staff is rather quite inattentive. Space is like squeezing an adult size elephant into a compact car with elbow-to-elbow room. I do not recommend this pub for large group gatherings. The stairs are almost like a death trap when utilzing the restrooms especially when you're under the influence of alcohol. My mom and I have had our eye on this place for a while and we finally decided to go check it out. We went for a late lunch. There was no one outside or inside, except for two men chatting at the bar. The young Spanish looking girl was the one I guess running the place. She had ZERO personality. She told us as soon as we walked in that the bar isn't serving liquor, but we said we were there to eat. She just told us to sit anywhere and, again, she was unfriendly. We asked why there was no liquor being served, cuz I mean it's an Irish spot, and she said they don't have their license. I was completely over her lack of personality and attitude that I couldn't even look at the menu. I just wanted to leave. I'm not gunna eat somewhere and put money into a place with horrible service like that. So we walked out without ordering. Retrain that young girl please. Went to Irish Cottage with mom, dad, and family friend who came to Forest hills for a concert. We happened upon it on our way to Nicks Pizza, They were hot and tired and Irish Cottage seemed to beckon. Glad they got lazy. I had the chicken Quesadilla, Mom had a salad, Dad, Fish and Chips and Ms. F had the burger. Everything was excellent on every level. Went here for Mother's Day lunch. Along with brunch specials offered (Roast Turkey, Lamb, Lobster dishes), there was the regular menu open to ordering from which we all chose. The Irish Burger served on a brioche bun was melt-in-your-mouth perfection and cooked perfectly to medium-rare, complete with steak fries, sauteed onions and mushrooms. My daughter settled on the Mac 'n Cheese appetizer as her main dish (which proportionally would have fed 2 people)...Mac 'n Cheese was nothing to crave about and a bit watery but she enjoyed it. There was also complimentary soda bread and butter for the table when we sat down. The star of the afternoon was the Giant Pretzel appetizer....which frankly would have been enough to feed 5 people. They hang the pretzel on one of those metal banana holders and it was HUGE. See included photo. The pretzel was hot, unbelievably fresh, and came with two dipping sauces of melted cheese and horseradish. A nice touch to the experience was that the female owner of the establishment made it a point to visit each table for some small-talk while wishing everyone a Happy Mother's Day and offering up a selection of Irish biscuits for everyone to try. The hostess/server was friendly but I don't think she had too much experience because she immediately asked me for my order when she just sat me down. The place started to get crowded right after I placed my order and the service went downhill from there. I wasn't served any water when I first got there. I had to wait until my meal was almost finished to get salad dressing and when it came, it was the wrong one. The Irish bread which was mentioned on the menu that my meal was supposed to come with never came. I had to actually ask the server for water & Irish bread as she was too busy attending to other customers that came after me which was very annoying. I ordered the broccoli & cheddar quiche. The presentation was lovely. The quiche was good but could use a little more seasoning. The mushroom barley soup was bland & cold. I liked that my meal came with sliced fruit & a salad. That was a nice treat. The mimosa didn't taste good so I exchanged it for a cranberry juice instead. I gave this place 2 stars because the service wasn't good and the food would be better if seasoned just a little more. I came here once about 14 years ago. I had a couple of drinks and it was ok. A nice local bar. Decided to come here with my husband and daughter for lunch since she was out of school. I chose it because they actually had Calamari on the menu. I know...but my daughter is extremely picky and it one of the only places that I could see which was on the lunch menu. Well...it turned out terrible. It seemed like it was microwaved the slightly breaded and pan-fried? I had French onion soup, which was ok, and the pretzel. The pretzel was dry. The cheese sauce which came with it was also terrible. It tasted like the cheese sauce that comes from a industrial size can from costco. My husband made the best decision...the Irish breakfast. The food was good, but the service was abysmal. Rating is based on food quality. If I had to give a rating for service, it would be negative stars. The service was inattentive at best. We were a party of 3, and when our food arrived, 2 of our orders were incorrect. My husband spotted his first. Our server took his plate, and never returned to see how the rest of us were doing. I sat there waiting for her to return to send my food back. When the server returned, I said my order was also incorrect, said what it should have been, and said I wanted it corrected. She disappeared and sent out someone who I could only assume to be the manager. I then repeated what was wrong and said I wanted it fixed. It was fixed, all fine....until it came.time for the check. We had to ask 3 times for the check. After 30 minutes it finally arrived....and incorrect. 2 rounds of drinks for 3 people were not included. My husband brings it back to be corrected. It's been years since we have been to the Cottage, and based on the service on a quiet Friday evening, I don't know if I will be rushing back. I'm here to rebuff commentary about service and it's treatment of new-comers. I'm a forest hills native, and was here as a kid but since leaving for college and then moving away right after, I never really had a reason to hang out in Forest Hills much. As an adult, I'm basically a newcommer. I have been here intermittently over the course of 10 years, previously no more than once every 3 years or so (never often enough to be remembered of course). But every time I was here, I was treated with KINDNESS and RESPECT. I've taken my friends here when they've visited, because it's always a chill place to gather friends, enjoy a few beers, kick back in our weekend casual. I've been preparing for an exam, and I've been coming back here for the last 3 weeks almost every other night. Reason? It's open late. Decent food. Quiet and comfortable. Kind and respectful wait staff. When I come in, the waitress (who usually don't know me), finds a quiet place, near an outlet, and offers me the wifi password. They offer a short chat, then we carry on with our nights. Very respectful :-) If you want loud and rambunctious, go next door to 5 burros or the tap room. if you want the best food with a killer beer list, of course there's the Station House but be prepared for a loud yuppie crowd that are judging you for occuphying space. But a place where you can feel like it's your living room, with wifi, and hang out or get some work done? This place is warm and welcoming. And so SO much cleaner than a diner. It's a real resource and attribute of the neighborhood. read more

I have a personal family connection here so I may not be a good judge, but the Cottage has been a mainstay in my hood for over 30 years. It was the Airline Pub before that. Very clean and a family run business, and always has been. Good pints, good people. I have been hitting this place for many years as it is directly across the street from me, but even if it was not, I'd hang out here. Had many a good night/morning in the place. Expect very expensive prices for a local Queens watering hole. If you're in Forest Hills to do some shopping or see a movie, stop in for a few. Also, the food is good as well. My family has been to this place at least 20 times. YES!! 20 and they were enjoyable and great visits until this day. When my aunt went to the restaurant to grab a table for dinner as usual. Everything seemed normal from outside, until my aunt went inside and the manager screamed "NO MORE BOTTLES" twice very loudly at her. She thought he meant the wines were sold out. Who knew he was talking about bottles for the recycling machines for money. He finally took it to the next step by pushing her, literally pushing, out on the street, and said all the bottles were taken away just now. Then my aunt screamed back saying "I'm your customer, i don't take bottles and exchange for money. Don't assume I'm one of those bottle pickers." However, the manager actually told a worker to MAKE SURE it wasn't my aunt who always comes to take bottles. And the worker said it's not my aunt. When the manager realized it wasn't my aunt, he did looked embarrassed. My point is this restaurant is pretty racist in a sense. Just because we're all Chinese doesn't mean all of us will take bottles. What if I make a statement that "all Irish drinks alcohol if not they're not Irish" or other generalizations. The worst part wasn't when the manager accused my aunt of taking bottles, but that he even asked a worker to MAKE SURE it wasn't her before he would let her freaking go. I came on here to review this place, but would've stayed far away had I read all these reviews beforehand! I ended up going here for a group outing on a random Tuesday night. I'd never heard of the place, but everyone else seemed to like it enough to go back. So there we went! The place does have signs outside, but I wonder if it's for a laugh? Do men really need to remove their hats? I'm not sure, but anyway.. The place is small, and the restaurant portion of the place is slightly underground and in the back. We sat at the large table in the middle and I proceeded to order a Harpoon IPA. The Guinness that others ordered looked right on target! The place was quiet, and the restaurant area was fairly empty. The bar had more of a crowd. I ordered the curry chicken, with potato leek soup as my starter. Delicious soup, and the entree was good as well, but I wish they would've given a bigger serving of rice! The curry was also a little salty, but not terrible. Overall, I had no complaints at this place. I didn't have to yell to be heard over the table, no one really bothered us, and service is what you would expect at a pub/restaurant. I wouldn't go out of my way to return here, but I wouldn't insist on not going here if someone suggested it. read more

Anytime I ventured to The Cottage it was mainly for nightcap purposes. We didn't want to go home, but we didn't want to stay where we were, wherever that was. Almost always opting for the cramped far left corner of the right angled horseshoe shaped bar we would order up some pints of Guinness as The Cottage offers the best local pours. Initially I found the male bartender somewhat brash, but after spending more time and money from my corner seat the brashness subsided. No big surprise there. I've eaten a few bar food items off the menu and always enjoyed my meals. The burger is nothing to write home about, but hits on the key importances of bar food. Fast, filling, inexpensive. Oddly I enjoy The Cottage much more during the holiday season. The decorations and lights add such a nice cozyness, warmth and holiday feel that I recommend stopping in if your thanksgiving or Christmas shopping on or around Austin Street. read more
