I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. My friends and I come here every Thursday for the most awesome trivia in Astoria! Even though we always lose, the bar itself is just a good time and Mike gets the unofficial best bartender in the world award from me. He seems to know everyone and is really good at remembering what you're drinking. Usually he also does a buyback on your 3rd beer which is always nice! Yesterday a fight started to break out and Mike jumped over the bar and managed to diffuse the situation in a matter of seconds, keeping us all safe. (Thanks!) Overall this is just a super relaxed Irish pub with good pours at good prices, something related to sports on every TV and awesome Thursday night trivia. read more

Love this spot. Great neighborhood bar with authentic Irish bartenders. Good vibe, although the vibe can change depending on the evening, but it's always fun. Sometimes it's more chill, sometimes it's super sporty when there's a big game on and the place is packed with beer drinkers in jerseys, and sometimes you're just there on a random Saturday night and they're playing N*Sync and a spontaneous dance party ensues. So, you really just never know, but you can always count on having a good time. Definitely one of my go-to spots in Astoria. read more

I come here every week for Thursday night trivia, and it's an excellent bar. The bartender is personable and so so quick, and the atmosphere is warm and homey. Make sure you eat beforehand, because they don't have a kitchen and the drinks are reasonably priced enough that you'll likely have several. But they allow outside food in. All in all, an ideal neighborhood bar with a great staff and friendly crowd. Thumbs up. read more

Came here because of Yelp. Was not disappointed. Mike, the new bartender, made me feel at home immediately. It's like I've been coming here all my life. Great neighborhood, Irish bar. No food available other than the free bag of Irish chips, but plenty of close food options you can bring in. Soccer will dominate the tv's, but other sports are available. I Love this place. Without fail, everytime I have come here, no matter what kind of mood I am in or who I'm with-I leave so happy. And am super hungover the next day. It's like the bartenders are on a personal mission to get you drunk. They give you every 3rd beer free, and the beer is pretty cheap to begin with. The bartenders are very nice and cool. Also hanging out on the front steps is always very entertaining. I think I have drunkenly met about 100 new best friends or potential dates here. And they have a good beer selection. This is the type of place you dig in for the long haul. I've never felt more comfortable in a bar. Price (third drink buybacks as evidenced in other reviews), atmosphere (order in your own food which I really like), capacity, clientele and amenities (plenty of big screen tvs for sports) were all perfect for having several drinks. I was working nights when I first moved to Queens, and the Rover opens at 8am. Nothing helps counter-act a Life Less Ordinary like buy-back thirds when everyone else is on their way to work. My go to spot to watch EPL (English Soccer for those who don't enjoy futbol) and it's great for any sports in general as they have tvs galore. Prob the only bar in Astoria that truly shows every NFL game as well. They also have events when they order or make food for the entire bar for free like big soccer games and football games. Good tap selection and bartenders that know how to tend bar. Meaning they know how to make a good drink, poor a good draft, and they buy back!! Pints are $5 and every 3rd drink is on the hizzouse! Heard that?! It's dark and has the rep of an 'old man bar' but I do see plenty of cuties coming in. They have a few dart boards and other games as well. It used to be cash only but now they do take cards, so don't shy away from the Rover! read more

This place is greaaaaaat (imagine me saying this in the boss from Office Space's voice). Seriously, I LOVE this bar--my Astoria friend told me about it and we hang out there all the time. Unpretentious (if a little to the right of me politically), genuinely friendly and hey, buybacks after the 2nd round! (The guy below who insists the buybacks are only for Irish customers is crazy--I've gotten them for years.) The one and only thing I'd change is that I wish they had *some* kind of kitchen, to prepare even just a few items. But what can you do? I would give them a 4.5 stars because of the no-kitchen but Yelp doesn't have that option--so 5 it is! PS: Mike is an awesome bartender, a real sweetheart. read more

I've officially christened this place as my official neighborhood bar. There are too many in Astoria that are a bit too trendy for my tastes, and when I want to grab a drink after work I would much rather come here. The bartender is really friendly and, as everyone mentioned, 3rd round is generally on the house. It's a true locals pub! read more

Ive only been here few times and it really is a true locals pub with down to earth ppl. Great place to grab drink, still has authentic pub feel to it. Real gem for Astoria. As most places are beginning to get away from that. Trivia night on Thurs with chance to win cash with 10 entry fee. If bartender likes you, you get your 3rd drink for FREE. Place has Darts and Golden Tee, which are must haves for any authentic pub. Very reasonable prices here for Astoria, i think every 3rd drink is on the house. The Rover is one of my favorite spots in Astoria. Sometimes its crowded and some nights its quiet. When I'm here I just get this feeling of HOME. The bartenders are awesome, super friendly, never had one that had an attitude. Always paying attention to what you order and they are very generous. PLUS the owner and a lot of regulars there are 49er fans so its a pleasant place to watch games during Football season! read more

The Rover is a great neighborhood bar. It's unpretentious, and I go here often for Sunday night trivia by the Quizmasters! If you like bar trivia, it's a great place to go. The questions are smart, the bartender is nice, and there's good competition. Best part-- you play for cash. Not that we've ever won... but we're trying! The bar itself is a typical Irish pub. Dimly lit, TVs for sports games, a great juke box and serviceable seating. I'm definitely glad I live in the neighborhood. read more

In a day and age when being negative is trendy on the Internet, I stand clear, the Irish rover is a 5 star Irish pub. They don't serve food but don't worry they offer menus and order the food for you. And unlike other pubs who offer similar services they won't charge you for it! read more

i nearly fell off my chair when i saw the irish rover ranked as the second best bar in new york on yelp? ugh? people? what are you on? or as ricky jarvais would say: "are you havin' a laugh?" i really hope so.. this place is your below average dive, with little or nothing going for it. i went there two or three times to watch games or have a beer due to the lack of any decent drinking establishments in the area.. and it was nothing more than your sticky floor, drunken, hell hole. i'm a big believer in yelp, but when i see this place rated #2 in new york i begin to loose faith in the system. yelp staff - save yourself some face and take a trip here. it ain't pretty! on the plus side, if you hang about for a few beers you'll be sure of a buy back, and hey - free beer always tastes good! read more

This is an average neighborhood bar. The people are average, the television set up is average, the drink selection is average, the prices are average and the bartenders are pretty nice. I don't know what everyone is talking about with the buy back thing( I had actually also heard this from someone I had recently met) which is the main reason I came here. I straight up asked one of the bartenders if they had buybacks and she laughed at me, so no they DO NOT offer BUY BACKS. read more

I love this place! It has great bartenders, a great buy back policy and a diverse & friendly crowd. It's the best dive bar that I've been to. The clean bathrooms are also a huge plus. The only downside is that they don't have any bar food, but they do have a great takeout menu selection and a great places nearby that are willing to deliver to your bar stool. read more

This is a reliable and unpretentious neighborhood pub that I like best for a few drinks after work. Contrary to what a few of the negative reviews have stated, the bartenders have always bought my third drink, and I am not Irish or a lifelong resident of Astoria. The bartenders are cool and approachable if you want to go in and talk shit with someone while you have a beer. Conversely, if you prefer to stare into the bottom of your glass and ponder all of your bad decisions, the staff will let you do that as well. So it's a versatile environment, depending on your mood. While I do enjoy this bar overall I rarely find reason to stay longer than an hour. Maybe if they had a kitchen it would be a bit more inviting. read more
