So I met up with a few friends the other night and we decided to head out for a drink. One friend lives a block away from "the Rover" so we decided to try it out. Free Darts, Buybacks on every 3rd beer (consistently) Cool bartender, naked photo hunt, jukebox, this place is a good low key pub to go and hang out with some friends. If you aren't looking to go to a club or hang out in the city and just want a local pub to throw a few back, this is the place to go. read more

ended up here to end a Saturday night around 2am. I loved how the bartenders were real Irishmen, super friendly, great personalities and attentive to us customers. The drinks were well-priced and the crowd was fairly diverse - young 20s to 40s and diff ethnicities. That night there happen to be a a group of Irish guys visiting NY, so it was extra fun for us girls! Cute accents! One bartender saw one of my friends had a little too much to drink and offered to call us a cab and make sure no creepers were wandering outside. Really cool. Only wish parking wasn't such a problem, but Astoria's always packed in the weekends. read more

Ended up here a few Fridays ago because Sweet Aftons was too full of douche-tastic hipsters, and after an enjoyable evening, it might become my go-to Astoria drinking spot. In my hood, not too loud or expensive- what more can you ask for? Reminds me of the bars I used to go to in the South, no frills, dark wood, plentiful beer, and the bartenders REALLY hooked up our large group when we got the tab. absolutely zero complaints about the rover. cheap drinks, third round free, great jukebox, soccer on tv 98% of the time, never too crowded, and right down the street from my new apartment. i did once share a drink with a dude (while waiting for a friend) who threatened with gory, creepy detail to kill a woman selling bootleg dvd's if the quality wasn't top-notch. strangely, this did not curtail my desire to return. like i said, no complaints. read more

I lived down the block from this pub for well over three years and I have to say it is one of the best local pubs there are. I mean I wouldn't travel from this side of town to that for it but if you just so happen to have this gem of a pub next door there is no reason to ever go any where else. Centrally located. Great for sport as there are a ton of tv's. Lot's of great little restaurants to order in from. The bartenders and some of the best this town has to offer. Actually getting to know ya and taking the time to actually remember what you like to drink. So that being said I have to agree with most posters on this pub because it is near and dear to my heart, but like I said earlier I wouldn't travel for it. This is the best local pub ever! Their prices are so reasonable. The serve their Erdinger in a tall glass, they always remember what I owe them with my free one included and most willing to give out Tay-tos if they have them behind the bar. The bartenders know how to keep the girls interested and how to tell a sexist joke now and then (but that's the fun of it). There are always social people and groups that show up. It can get loud on Saturdays, but that's due to the LIVE music! I only wish I could actually get in on a dart game now and then, otherwise, I couldn't be more blessed to live so close! read more

A serviceable pub. The drinks are cheap. The atmosphere is low stress. The patrons are a little dull, but there are a few kooky locals for effect. The bar itself is probably a little too big and definitely overlit, but the fact that it's situated in a residential building gives it a little flare. Hands down one if the best bars I've been to. Very diverse crowd of all ages, but predominantly a blue collar Queens crowd, which is all I need. Staff here is aces, very attentive and polite, and doesn't play favorites with certain customers while ignoring others. They treat everyone as a regular, I really appreciate that! The bar is very clean, excellent prices, and great old school Irish bar atmosphere. While there's a large range if ages drinking and socializing here, my girlfriend and I never felt creeped out by getting weird stares from drunk guys like at other watering holes. It's the kind of place where you just hang out with everyone, have a great beer, and enjoy. Literally nothing negative to be said about the Rover. read more

Simply put, maybe the best bar in Astoria, or all of NYC. Great, friendly bartenders (Mike especially), cool crowd, finance bro and frat boy free (mostly), and generally a genial atmosphere. Also, the best trivia game in the city, without peer. Real trivia where you actually have to know stuff beyond what's on TV or at the movies. Games are super competitive, and a bunch of the same teams show up to compete each week. No food is served there, but you're free to bring in or order in from many of the surrounding places in the 'hood. read more

So my friends and I would go out pretty much every wednesday in astoria during the summer to find a new bar to drink in. some are teachers, some are still in school, some just dont care if they roll into work smelling like they just poured a bottle of vodka over themselves. when walking up to the bar we didnt think it was going to be what it was. a rowdy fun bar with good bartenders, ample seats, tvs and for a wednesday night.. people. this was one of the few places we ended up returning to more than once. i definitely recommend it. The Rover is one of the best neighborhood dive bars I've ever seen. The Guiness is cold and scrumptious. The bartenders are friendly (and, yes, they give buy-backs like every good bar should). The decor is cozy---seemingly 200-year-old wooden walls and squeaky floors abound. It has a wonderfully subdued atmosphere, and a very cool selection of tunes in the juke.
