Predatory Practice | Fraud | Scam Alert I'm absolutely disgusted with what Irondequoit Animal Hospital has become since selling out to Thrive Pet Healthcare, which is owned by TSG Consumer, a private equity firm. After nearly a decade of trusting them with my pets and spending thousands of dollars on their care, they've turned into nothing more than a profit-hungry, corporate-driven scam. On 1/22/25, my dog underwent surgery for an ear hematoma. When they released him to me, he was actively dripping blood in the lobby. Instead of handling the situation like professionals, they made me clean him up myself before I could even take him home. I was stunned--speechless, even. We followed post-op instructions to the letter, kept the cone on for two weeks, and everything seemed fine. But last week, I heard my dog wince when scratching his head, only to discover that his ear was still infected and another hematoma was forming. On 2/22/25, I called to report the issue. The woman I spoke to was understanding and agreed that this shouldn't have happened. She assured me they would make it right and scheduled another surgery for 2/25/25. But when I arrived, I was handed a $700 estimate for the exact same procedure I had already paid over $800 for just weeks ago. I refused to pay for a failed procedure that should have been resolved the first time. First, I had to explain the entire situation again to a vet tech. Then, I had to re-explain it to the practice manager. After much back and forth, they begrudgingly offered to cover half the cost--a clear admission that they knew they were at fault. If they truly believed they did nothing wrong, they would have held firm on the full charge. And then, the cherry on top: When I picked up my dog, they informed me that I was banned from bringing my pets back for refusing to pay for their incompetence. Let that sink in. To make matters even worse, they discharged my dog with an ear cannula that needs to be removed four weeks post-op--but then told me I would have to find another vet to do it. So not only did they fail to correct their own botched surgery, but they also washed their hands of any follow-up care. When I called another vet to explain the situation, their response was immediate: this was blatant neglect. They were appalled that a veterinary practice would perform a procedure and then refuse to complete the necessary aftercare. This should never have happened. Irondequoit Animal Hospital is no longer the compassionate, trustworthy place it used to be. They are nothing more than a corporate machine designed to squeeze every last cent out of pet owners while delivering subpar care. They do not stand by their work, and they will charge you full price--again--for their own failures. If you take your pets here, stay vigilant. I started going here with my pets in January this year. They have been great in caring for both our cats and our dog. If you just need to go in for routine blood work all you need is a quick 15 min vet tech appt and the Dr call's with the results to save time for everybody. No lengthy appt needed! Stay away! When my cat started throwing up and showing signs of her late stage liver disease these vets dropped the ball. Instead of a cheap quick X-ray for $130 of her stomach I paid for prescriptions and hundreds in blood work that revealed nothing. When I went back in because my cats health continued declining I told the vet I think there's something in her stomach which prompted the X-ray and discovery of the cats large liver tumor. Then to make matters worse I took my cat to a radiologist for a sonogram of her stomach to see if the tumor could be removed and they found fluid in her lungs. The next day, in the coldest tone ever, their vet Dr. Stark tells me "it's time." And I go time for what? She replies to put her to sleep. Keep in mind she isn't my cats primary vet and has never even examined her and is telling me to euthanize her based on paperwork even after I told her my cat is still eating, drinking and enjoying back scratches. Definitely unprofessional and unethical. How could you be so heartless? My cat is family not just an animal. As an animal lover who once dreamed of being a vet, can't allow my pets to be patients at a practice jumping the gun for euthanasia. Not taking this doctors advice and never going back! read more

I received nothing but excellent service and the prices are commensurate with service and professionalism. I am a new patient of Irondequoit Animal Hospital. My first visit will be July 24th. My 11 week old Yorkie puppy was breathing very fast one evening. Being a bit of a neurotic (and having lost my very first puppy from UNKNOWINGLY a puppy mill, who was sick from the moment I brought him home). I made a call to them. They were able to get me in to ease my mind. Everyone there was very kind and comforting to me as well as my little Buddy. Although I had not finished my initial information on Buddy, they helped me to do so and the staff was GREAT I'm looking forward to my appointment on the 24th and the security of a good medical team that is not only patient with me, but will care and educate my little guy and me! read more

I started going to Irondequoit because my Vet went there. I was very impressed with all of the staff as they are all very kind and caring and will take time with you. I never feel rushed and all of my questions and concerned are always addressed. I drive in from the Westside and for me it is the best decision I could be making from my pet. If you have any questions or concerns you can email them and they will get back to you. If need be, the Vet will call you back. Most Animal Hospitals are not accepting new patients due to staffing issues so I am very grateful to have Irondequoit Animal Hospital as my Vet for my dog and I drive past 3 other clinics to get there that I know one is accepting patients. read more

Just transferred to this vet. I was with my previous vet for over 20 years with previous pets.He sold his practice. I came here because it. Is close to my home. Doctor was very nice. I waited to be checked out for longer than the whole visit. I was giving two types of pills for,my 13 yr old dog. I get home and get a call that they gave me the wrong medication! I went back after already waiting over 1/2 hr to be checked out, to exchange for the correct medication, and was told they double check and sign off on the meds before handing them over, and dont know how this could,have happened! Double checked! Wont be going back these types of mistake can be deadly. First impression is a lasting one. Disgusted update the medication that they gave for an allergy causes anorexia my dog lost 10 pounds and has liver failure now. funny that someone mentioned upselling teeth cleaning, since that's exactly what I've paid for recently... on the other hand, I have had a cat who had to get her teeth extracted because of decay, so I'd rather deal with that earlier than later! And to be fair I would have thought a rabies vaccine was "unnecessary" for an indoor cat... until my cat managed to catch a bat we didn't realize was in the attic! And then I was pretty grateful for that shot. On the whole, I've had good experiences with this clinic. It's a clean place and they seem professional and organized. I called here 2 months ago to establish my pet as I moved here from another area. His shots and everything are due this month. I was told that they were accepting new patients but were not booking out that far. Today I called to schedule for a few weeks out AND sorry I don't know who told you that but we are not accepting new patients. We have been bringing our fury children here since they opened in 1973. First my grandparents yellow Lab. Then our first guinea pig who lived many happy years after old doc Fagen removed his tumor. Then a pretty young lady from Texas with the nicest southern drawl named ONeil joined the practice. She has cared for all our animals since. She has been Primary care, dentist , surgeon & more until she eases their way from this life to the next. Once when interviewing a new PCP for myself I told her I was trying to find someone who would treat me with the same care Dr. ONeil does my animals. That PCP was a bit shocked but took that to heart & She's still my PCP today. Love these people. Three names to mention Cindy, Colleen, & Jen, who have all been there more than a decade. read more

I called and spoke with Colleen to get a message to the vet. She was rude and dismissive and quite unhelpful. My pet had significant changes in behavior and needed a consultation. She in no way was empathic or understanding of my concerns, telling me the doctor "can't return your call". She was disrespectful and judgmental and made assumptions about how we were caring for our pet. Her attitude was unacceptable and she should not be answering the phone and representing this facility. I and my wife both live  in irondequoit and have experienced on several occasions a complete lack of respect, racism  and utter disregard for people of color and Hispanics alike when servicing both us and our pets. I'VE seen on several occasions the staff smile genuinely when servicing caucasians then frown, deliberately take their time even smurk when servicing us. The outright arrogance they display when thumbing their noses at us after pocketing so much of our hard earned  money in their deep pockets is outright disrespectful. Took my dog for cold laser treatment after trying to soothe him all night -- he has had 2 knee surgeries and has lower back issues. This review comes about 5 years late but better late than never. At the time I had an amazing cat named Ganon who developed vestibular syndrome. (A condition I was told, and have read, should not be fatal.) At the time that he developed this his regular vet was on vacation(Grzankowski I believe who was always wonderful.) We were set up with Dr. O'Neill who seemed really confused and unsure about what to do the entire time. She decided to administer a shot into his spine stating that in a few days things should clear up and he would be fine. On the car ride home he urinated all over himself - which he had NEVER done before. The following days he became rapidly worse and was totally paralyzed from the waist down, dragging his legs everywhere behind him and going to the bathroom literally everywhere because he could no longer feel the lower half of his body. When we returned to Dr. O'Neill she was dumbfounded. Repeatedly stating that she had never seen this before and wasn't sure why it had happened. I ended up having to put him to sleep. I think there was alot of misaction in the case of Dr. O'Neill which resulted in my cat becoming paralyzed and ultimately dying. Now that I have another cat when I think about taking him to the vet, it's a cold day in hell that I'd ever take him here or ever suggest that anyone else does either. When it came down to it- she acted unknowledgeable throughout the duration of his decline and just didn't exude the confidence I seek in a veterinarian. read more

I have always taken my pets to Irondequoit Animal Hospital. They have excellent doctors, techs, and staff. Most recently my dog woke up one morning and couldn't walk. I took her to a local emergency vet and spent 6 hours there (and a ton of money) to be told that had no answers for me. I went home and called my vet, IAH in tears. Dr. O'Neill called me at 9 at night, after having a very long day, she still took the time to call me. When I told her my dogs symptoms she told me to come in first thing the next morning. Within 3 minutes she had my dog diagnosed. She came up with a game plan to help my dog, helped calm my fears, and gave me hope. She was very thorough and informative. Colleen who works there walked me out of the office and hugged me and also helped to ease my mind. They answered all my silly questions when I called a million times and never once made me feel like I was being a pest. Not only are the people at Irondequoit Animal Hospital compassionate and caring towards the pets that come in, they are also that way with the people that come in. My little loving and loved Jack Russell is now dying of Lyme disease induced Stage IV kidney failure; it's horrible; despite years of discussing with them my dogs' tick bite problems which cause the disease from my walks with them at Durand Park (keep your dog away from there or any wooded area frequented by deer). I didn't think they were infected because they didn't seem to generally have signs which is the case in 95% of dogs until the final deadly stages, though one did have a constant hacking cough for three months, a sure sign of the disease; it was solved but not cured when I asked for a prednisone Rx. (They did over $800 of tests, xrays, etc. first without a diagnosis.) IAH never suggested testing, I think maybe didn't know the high prevalence of the disease or they also told me they thought heart worm testing also detected Lyme disease (it does not). I think it is their job to know these things. I've now paid over $2000 at the Orchard park Veterinary Medical Center (which I highly recommend - they immediately diagnosed the Lyme disease the first trip there). IAH is totally unwilling to either refund any of my useless visits there which were not cheap nor help me to try to save her when i feel it was their fault she was never diagnosed nor treated in time (it is easily cured with early treatment and impossible to cure after it has later found its way into the brain and joints), In fact, the last time in, rather than diagnosing the Lyme disease, it was recommended I should pay them over $1800 for teeth cleaning and removal of a small cyst...on a sick high risk dog in stage IV kidney failure!. These costs for my little girl I know are also just the start as a result. Please be advised there is a life time vaccine, with boosters occasionally, that protects your animal completely for life; it's simple, effective and inexpensive.so get your own dog vaccinated and it will have life time protection against this horrible painful (for animal and owner) killer. read more
