Dude was about as rude as everyone on here has stated. After several curt responses to my quote request, From Yelp: "email this to ___________." From email: "Text me pictures to _________" Dude got pretty upset that he wasn't asking the questions he needed to get me a quote and decided to make that my problem. "You're giving me just pieces all over the place. I got the photos now I need the address, name, phone email all in one text so I can give you a quote and pass it on to the tech." I'm not a linguist, but I'm pretty sure you could have just asked for all that in the first response. If you're into contractors with the conversational skills and organization of an angry 11 year old boy, he's your guy. Unfortunately, our experience with Irongate welding was not positive. Dave was quick to respond to give us pricing for installing new iron fencing at our condo and then again to quote us to remove the damaged fencing. We had a board meeting to accept the quote. Then when we he found out that we have a management company he sent an email saying he wouldn't do any work for any building under that management company. He didn't specify why he didn't like them or why he had such a negative reaction. He then declined to do the work. Very strange interaction with little explanation. Luckily, there are plenty of folks in Chicago who do iron fence work. Update to Dave's response: To clarify, I wrote this review after I received this email from Dave, "Thats very sad that you are represented by [name removed] ( deadbeat property management) We dont work for any building in Chicago that has anything to do with them . Thanks anyway. We are happy to decline ." Me: "That was quite the turnaround. Our experience has been positive. I'm sorry yours has not. Terrible customer service! After following up several times to get an estimate on a broken fence/gate, I finally got a response and was asked to provide a few pictures so they could get a better idea of what was needed for said repairs. Sent over 4 pictures and never got a response. Followed up via email and phone calls again to which I got a half-assed answer and an excuse that the days I could be available to get them in for a look at the gate was "cutting it short" but wasn't given any dates/times from this company... As well, I was also told that it was too cold (that excuse was used more than once). Hey, Thanks for nothing, guys! I'll be sure to not bother you in the future. Update: Had another company come out and look at, then fix the gate within 25 minutes; no complaints or excuses; Very professional, very friendly. Regardless of weather, Requesting an estimate should not take weeks and non-response. As well, I am no spoiled brat, nor do I play video games? Horrible experience!!! Alex provided the poorest workmanship I have received from a contractor and as a property manager, I hire lots of contractors. Alex put up a fence that was supposed to be anchored down three feet. He built the fence and anchored the posts so shallow that the fence could be pushed over. He claimed there were "sidewalks" and "concrete slabs" under posts preventing digging, which was a lie. I dug down three feet and reset all the posts myself. He also did such a poor job mixing the cement that it crumbled off when I gave it a couple taps with a hammer. He didn't paint the entire fence and large areas began rusting within days. So, I had to repaint it. His welds on the spear heads and post caps just pop off. He did not clean up after himself and left scrap, welding rods, and dirt everywhere. This guy cut so many corners, and did such a poor job, I don't see how he can still be in business. I asked for a partial refund and got nothing. The owner apparently resides in Florida and didn't want to be bothered. read more

Someone stole my bike yesterday. I am still in mourning. To steal my bike, they had to cut our fence into pieces, and bend the hell out of one of the posts. Mind you, this is a wrought iron fence, for my mediocre bike. Not only was the shock of losing my bike troubling, but also, we had to fix this fence. We called Irongate, and Dave said he could be there in half an hour. Half an hour later, he showed up, and looked at our fence. It was scary when he said "Whoa, what the hell?" We both thought that this would be a few hundred dollars, if not more to fix this. He looked at it, bent part of the fence back into place, and pulled the broken piece out. He looks back at his van, looks back at the fence, and says "75 bucks. I can be done with it in half an hour." We had originally planned to price out a few different companies, but this quick and this cheap...what more could we ask for? And, true to his word, 75 dollars and half an hour later, our fence looks good as new. My bike is still missing, but our fence is back to normal. For our future iron needs, we're definitely going to call them back. read more

I have used this company in the past and customer service has changed. I needed a railing fixed and sent pictures. Received a quote and was give a fair price. However, getting it scheduled was a whole different story. I could not get an estimated day, time frame, or anything for when the guy could show up. I called and Dave just got irritated by my request for a time frame and stated that he didn't need my business that they cannot do rush jobs. I do not recommend this company unless you have all the time in the world to get your stuff fixed and do not care if it happens now or weeks down the road. BTW my job was a broken railing at the top of the steps and yes, small children are in residence. If I could give them zero stars I would. As you can see from his response he is a stand up guy. I never asked to jump the line, I am not rich, I was just hoping to get an estimated time of when the employee could show up and fix it. How is that being unreasonable. Super responsive over phone / text, worked me in on short notice, and did a great job. Our metal gate door was banging into the post for months, and it got so bad it wouldn't close anymore. Texted Alex some pictures, he gave me a fixed rate quote right away, and he was out here working on it in just a few days. They arrived right on time, explained everything they were going to do (bend the post to be vertical, hang the gate on new hinges to adjust the width, install a new strike and header, and paint), and took their time to do it right. If you are looking for a quick quote I would recommend Irongate, however, if you are actually looking for work to be completed I would not. After three failed attempts to schedule appointments over the course of four weeks, I have grown extremely frustrated and given up on this company. Each time an appointment was scheduled it was either a no show or a last minute cancellation. I actually got a text from them the morning of an appointment letting me know they couldn't show up because they had to focus on "other jobs." Dealing with Irongate has been a very frustrating experience so I would suggest not wasting your time. read more

Update: A few days after the front gate was installed, the welding on both hinges failed and the entire gate fell off onto the ground. Ed came out and rewelded it. A month or so later, I found the latch lever on the ground, the welding having failed on that as well. I texted Dave and his response was "Hahaha." Almost 3 months later, after many promises that Ed would find the time to come out and fix the latch, nothing. I am now hiring a welder to come out and fix Ed's work. Wish I hadn't tipped him. Wish I had used someone who cares about their customers and stands by their work. ---------------------- Had a front fence missing a gate and a few other issues. Not the fastest turnaround, granted, but it's hard to get anyone to do small jobs, and Irongate did a great job making the custom replacement and installing, which is all I really care about in the end. Attempted to get an estimate, voicemail stated to text pictures to a random number. I proceeded to do this (despite better judgement) and was asked to text further pictures of the site and all personal information and address of home. I explained that I wouldn't text all of my personal information to a random number and requested a phone call to go through the project, the response was "You don't call the shots...we do". Needless to say we went elsewhere, most unprofessional experience of my life. Don't waste your time, looks like the other reviews back this up. update: Was able to quickly find another vendor, all other companies I spoke with were much more professional. it's amazing how hard it is to find someone to do work on your house. We were redoing our front steps and wanted to re-use the wrought iron railing after they poured new concrete steps. It was amazing how hard it was to find a company to come out and give us an estimate. I thought I'd have to replace them all but Dave was able to salvage most of the existing iron by removing rust, shoring up/replacing certain sections and painting it all. I second every good thing already said about Dave and his people. I have had multiple jobs done by them . From burglar bars to new metal fence to repair of huge fence posts on an alley gate. The price is always either very fair and competitive to just the best you will find. All the work, new to really challenging repair has been perfection. If a nice crisp uniform and metro grooming are important to you this might not be the company. They all look appropriate for and capable of handling custom Harley Davidsons. I suspect they also ride quite well. If you want exceptional work done at a fair price by genuinely nice people look no further. Dave and his guys deserve to keep very busy and make lots of money. A few weeks ago my front gate fell off of its hinges! Luckily we have a couple of other ways to get in and out, but I certainly wanted to get things fixed within a day or two. After asking my normal handyman and my neighbors (and a certain woman's list) if they could recommend a welder, I turned up empty-handed, so I turned to Yelp. Reading most of the reviews for Irongate Welding, and also admiring their incredibly appropriate logo, I decided to call for an estimate. To be honest, it sounded like the guy who answered the phone was sleepy, but I think it was Monday, and I wasn't deterred. Anyway, the quote was reasonable and I was told to hear back in that afternoon or the next day. Patrick contacted me, and he was friendly. I explained that he would be welcomed by my elderly, hard of hearing, but sharp as a tack, neighbor instead of me. Patrick couldn't have gotten along better with my neighbor who came out to observe for a good amount of the time they were working. Patrick also called me with intermittent updates. I was immediately impressed and asked for a quote on some other fencework I needed. I asked them to move forward on that too. I came home and was super pleased to see my fence and gate looking better than ever. My neighbor told me how impressed he was with Patrick and his teammate - and by the way, my neighbor used to be a carpenter and is quite handy. Apparently whoever hung my gate used the wrong hinges and Patrick made sure to use the appropriate, heavy duty variety. He also replaced a post on the corner of my fence that had been hit more than a year ago. Everything looked fantastic! The next day Patrick stopped by to pick up the check and he took the time to introduce himself, tell me how awesome my neighbor is, and also explain what had been done, as well as how I could improve my fence if I desired to. I needed expanded metal mesh installed on my gate so my small dogs couldn't get out. Since it was a simple job, I was able to email them the picture of the project rather than have to rearrange my time around meeting someone which was awesome. They offered the best price and were out right away. Whats more, since they knew the dogs would be at the gate, they made sure there were no scraggly metal edges that they could cut their paws on. Called Dave Monday to fix a gate that was slamming due to a broken closer. He drove by and checked the apparatus on Wed and called me a solution. They came back on Thursday only to discover the strike plate was the wrong kind for our gate and spaced incorrectly. They then came back Friday and fixed us all up. Dave is a straight-up, no bullshit guy and instead of charging me for a new closer that he said we didn't even need in the first place he put on a simple spring and replaced the strike plate properly and for half of what it would have cost us to replace the ineffective (expensive) closer that would just broken again in a couple years anyway. Someone ripped down our back wood gate facing the alley and stole one of our tenants bicycle so we called several places and they all quoted us about $1100 to replace the fence and gate. I called up Dave after reading the reviews off of yelp and simply put he did not disappoint. I sent Dave pictures of the existing damaged fence and missing gate and he quoted me $900. He was a little hard to schedule an appointment with because his guys were so busy but they were totally worth the wait and 2 weeks later he sent his guys to put up a new iron fence and gate with wood pickets for privacy. This guys are great! Our fire escape stairs were rusted and they removed the rust, painted primed and put in additional stairs. They completed their work in a timely manner and at a FAIR PRICE! I had a great experience today with Irongate. A portion of my iron fence had been severely bent and distorted when a tree fell on it last summer. Dave said he'd try to bend it back into shape, but that he might have to cut out a section, make a new one, and weld it into place. I had serious doubts that anyone could ever get it back to its original shape, but after 3 hours, Dave somehow bent it back to about 98 to 99% of its original form. Amazing. I thought I'd be facing a repair in excess of $1,000, and Dave fixed it for a fraction of that. He's a nice guy, showed up on time, and he brings along his cool dog, too. read more
