By email, 'Frank' asked for photos of the porch, which I immediately sent him. And then we heard nothing back from them. I emailed three times more over the next week to inquire what Frank had thought of the photos and to find out if we could get an estimate. Crickets. This owner is absolutely annoying. Fun fact: I can read bank statements. Mr. Porch was paid $450 on February 11, 2020, but every single time he tells this story, the poetic license expands and the price continues to decrease. (I'm just waiting for him to finally narrow the price down to a quarter. Give him time. He's also given us a magical third porch, although we only have two porches.) As mentioned in my June review (and why he's responding in December is anybody's guess because we have long ago gotten the ENTIRE porch repaired, updated, with new brackets all over), instead of resolving the issue, there were a couple of brackets added. The same continuous lies went on and on about whether these brackets were galvanized. No matter how many times I asked, he just kept talking about how much he was paid, not the actual job. If the actual job costs more to install the correct supplies, then don't do the job for a cheaper price. Name your price. Own your price. And keep that price. You don't do anyone any favors by quoting a "cheap" price that the board had to go behind and fix. Focus on your new customers and stop worrying about people who have not seen, heard nor talked to you since June and changed my phone number immediately once you wouldn't stop bugging us. That chain of emails and text was ridiculous and resolved nothing, when I initially called you to do the ENTIRE job. Never would I ever make that mistake again. This is highly unprofessional. I am thrilled with my new two-story deck! Frank's team replaced my 15 year-old deck with a much sturdier, safer design. The design process was easy, and the 3d renderings they sent made it easy for me to visualize and tweak things to my needs. The build team started at 9am and usually worked til 6pm, and they tidied up the work area everyday before they left. We had two delays: rain and unexpected tuck pointing, but Gaby in the office kept everyone coordinated and they came on a Saturday afternoon to catch up. Everyone is "capable" and "great" when things go right, but sometimes "shit happens" and it's then when you realize whether the person that you hired for the job was the right one. After learning about Mr.Porch on an investor podcast, I decided to get my Porch repaired, at least I thought I needed it repaired. They came out and inspected my porch. I was bracing myself for impact. To my relief he was honest and told me that my porch may not be pretty but it was up to code and just pointed out some short cuts the previous owner took. The next day I get a call and he tells me that I need to fix the roof on the porch, which he did point out the day before, that it was done half-assed. Well, the call felt patronizing, "either my porch was important or not". I'm sure his heart was in the right place but it felt like I was getting a talk from Dad with the tone of "you need to make good decisions life". Given their reputed level of expertise I would use them but I can see where I might have to call him out on his way of talking to me. read more

We had heard great reviews but they must be in past. First they forgot appointment. Then they forgot to send estimate. We called. We were told it would be sent ASAP. It never arrived. At this point we will forget Mr Porch. We think they might forget to show up for job. I think they are a waste of time UPDATE--the company had been as responsive with scheduled appointments as they have been with responses there would have been no issue. My rear porch was in need of being replaced seeing how it was approx 40+ years old. It was old and weathered and felt like it could've collapsed. You see back when this old porch was built there were no city codes and quite frankly back then they built the porches with a forward lean so that water would run off. With the porch collapses of the 1990's and early millennium , the city demanded stricter guidelines be put in place and heavy duty designs that would ensure that these modern day porches/decks would not even budge. I swear my new porch/decks feel like they're built to last another 50 years without a doubt! After some research & a few other quotes I decided to & contacted MR. Porch to come give a free estimate. The owner ,Frank, contacted me and set up an appointment to come take a look. As scheduled , he showed up, we discussed what I would like and then he took measurements and pictures and informed me he would get back to me with an estimate. No pressure whats so ever, he answered all my questions, and was very patient and pleasant to deal with. So after receiving my estimate which was vey competitive and a good price I opted to go with Mr. Porch and the contract was signed to begin the project, which by the way Frank,the owner, explained the process all the way through so there were no surprises, and as explained, everything went smooth without any problems. An architect from Mr. Porch contacted me to take more measurements and pictures, I waited about 2weeks for the blueprints to be drawn, I was emailed a rough draft and once I approved and or made minor changes, permits were applied for and within 2 weeks after submitting plans to the city, permits were issued , I was re contacted and work began. 1st a dumpster was dropped off, a porta potty ( for workers) was dropped off on the job site, I was contacted by Andy-who would do the actual demolition and build of the new construction and 4days later (of course the weather was great ) my new porch/decks were up. It took Andy and Chris-only 2 builders, under 2 hours to tear down the old porch and prep the Area for the new porches and decks. I was amazed at how detailed they were from tearing it down to building it and especially how clean they were every day at the end of the work day . The patio/job site didn't look as though there were workers there because they would leave the area very clean at the end of each day, with the exception of the materials laying around neatly laid out. Which by the way, they use really good materials to build. This isn't your normal Home Depot lumber. They use a very good quality treated yello pine lumber . Andy and Chris did a fantastic job building my new porches and decks paying attention to every detail and being very meticulous in their work. From the top down, Frank , to his office guys John and Peter to Andy and Chris, there was always a very good sense of transparency when it came to dealing with my project and I always felt I was kept well informed every step of the way. 1 picture does not do Mr.Porch any justice, because you have to see different phases or be the one having their own porch/decks built to appreciate the quality of work this company does. I would and will definitely recommend this company . We needed several repairs to our deck. We live in a 3 unit condo in Chicago and the deck for each unit was over 20 years old. Most contractors recommended a completely new deck but Mr. Porch took the time to figure out what are the top priorities for structural stability and recommended improvements to comply with current building codes. The quoting process went well, the professionals that conducted the work were exceptional. The even did some additional work outside the quote as new issues arose. Cannot recommend. We contracted with them in Oct 2014 & provided a large downpayment with the understanding they would start work as soon as weather allowed in Spring 2015. We stressed from day 1 that this job had to be completed well before Memorial weekend. They did a great job of completely dismantling our old rooftop deck and building the new one. Excellent construction and all the old wood was properly discarded. They only sent one guy for this big job and it took a over a week, but turned out beautiful. However, DO NOT use this company to stain your deck!! It took 2 weeks of phone calls for someone to come out and stain the deck...2 days before Memorial Day. We had already cancelled our party, since it couldn't be walked on for 3 days. But worse, it looked terrible when they finally finished. (See photos.) 13 warm, sunny days and many phone calls & emails later, they sent the same guy who did the first terrible job to re-do it. To his credit, he worked for 12 hours and it turned out so-so. We also have a smaller back deck which was also poorly stained. Mr Porch said he didn't know when they'd be able to send someone to re-do it. We had to go to Menards, purchase stain & equipment and finish the job ourselves...and did a far better job. Not at all worth the fortune we paid. Very, very disappointed. read more

Mr. Porch build our "Chicago Deck" for a two flat in the Lincoln Square area of Chicago. The project was completed in August of 2018. As a result of this project we would recommend Mr. Porch to anyone seeking a new deck build, particularly one requiring demolition. We received a solid build, a fair price, and a very good experience overall. Mr. Porch was willing and able to schedule most work while we were out of town, they handled architecture, permitting, a tricky in-place demolition project, and they successfully utilized an existing roof to save us construction cost. This company is big enough to schedule a job exactly when you need them but small enough that interactions are friendly, employees remember you and your project, and the owner is available to customers with little delay. We had a number of follow up calls from them asking if everything was OK, they met with the inspector for us and assured that the porch passed permitting. The actual construction crew was friendly, sensitive to the noise level, and very respectful of our neighbors. I recommend this company and we will return to Mr. Porch for future projects. read more

I just had to hang up with an extremely rude and unprofessional representative of Mr. Porch - David Thorne. I filled out the form on their website and since it didn't have an option to upload any pictures, all I could do was describe the problem we have with our deck. I was looking for someone from the business to come out, confirm that the issue I found wasn't structural or a sign of something bigger being wrong with the decks and get me a quote to repair some steps and other parts of the deck. I sent him the pictures so he could see the issue and he proceeded to 'scold' me on why my request didn't make sense or have enough detail. He asked me if there were any structural problems with them deck, I said "that is why I'm calling your company". He told me to "calm down" - at which point I told him I did not want him coming to look at our deck. He certainly didn't seem like he wanted the business - he definitely didn't want someone who isn't a porch expert speaking with him. My suggestion to Mr. Porch - update your website to allow uploading pictures and fire Mr. Thune. read more

Having worked recently with Mr. Porch on a large association project, I trusted Mr. Porch to replace the aged, rotted, roof deck for my townhouse. The wood had been neglected over the years, with mold growing on the surface with the deck being a hazard to walk on. One major challenge was to have the old deck demolished and removed from the 4th level townhouse roof top. I explored many options (chutes, dumpster, crane, etc), but the most reasonable expense is to have the old wood manually carried down 4 flights of stairs. Mr. Porch assured me the task is do-able although daunting at first appearance, and they can complete it in just a few days. I received an estimate from on a Sunday, began demolition on Tuesday and had a new balcony by Saturday...utterly amazing. They sent 2 of their best guys to handle my project and they took 2 days to demolish, haul away the wet heavy debris, and carry up new lumber up the 4 flights via emergency stairway. They took the next 2 days to construct a quality floating deck with railings. They paid attention to details by constructing railings with thicker railing and wooden lattice design. When they finally came out (after many many messages) to do my porch they had to come out again as they did such a poor job staining it. My mother who has far less taste than I even commented on how poorly it was done. We reached out to Mr. Porch in March 2018 to receive a quote on power washing and sealing our 3-level, large deck at a 14 unit condo association. Frank was professional, friendly and confident. We had a quote within a few days, and signed a few weeks later after comparing other offers. We were told that they wouldn't be able to give us more than a 48-hour notice, but that their schedule was fairly open and they could have us done by mid-May. It's now mid-July. We've called numerous times and keep getting the run around. Each call ends with "You're top of the list. I'm sorry we'll get to you by the end of the week or early next week." and then the week passes by with no word. Today I tried to call again, and the phone kept ringing for two minutes without a voicemail option. This is completely unacceptable. We will never recommend Mr. Porch to any other association within Irving Park/Albany Park based on this experience. We hired Mr. Porch for a complete rebuild of a two-story back porch. We are very happy with the process and the result. They took care of all permit-related tasks, kept us in the loop of what was going on, and addressed all questions thoroughly and quickly. There was one hiccup along the way: the bottom level was not built according to design. However, once we pointed that out, everything was fixed. Mr. Porch also took care of the final city inspection. We would definitely recommend this company to anyone who is thinking of a porch construction. Before hiring Mr. Porch we received about five bids. Theirs was the most reasonably priced and best organized: everything was well described, no guesswork. Based on other reviews here, looks like my experience is the norm. The scheduling process should have been the first red flag. I called on Monday and spoke with a scheduler, who offered me a 10am appt Tuesday morning. I said I had a meeting at 10 that I couldn't miss, could we do noon instead? She kind of hemmed and hawed but finally said yes, noon would work. Later that evening, David called me to confirm his appt and hear my description of the job. He said, "Just to confirm, 10am tomorrow, right?" I said, "No, your scheduler wanted to do 10 but I explained to her I have an appointment at that time and can't get to the property until noon. Is noon still okay?" Yes it was, he assured me, noon Tuesday, confirmed. On Tuesday at 10:10 I was in my appointment (a doctor's appointment btw, not like a work thing I could just walk away from), and my phone rang - his number. Oh no. I couldn't answer, and 30 seconds later my Fitbit buzzed with a text, "Are you home???" I told the doctor someone was at my home and I needed to step out and call him, which I did, telling him AGAIN that I was in an appointment which he had interrupted and that I'd be there at noon as discussed. Once I finally met him at noon, we walked the property and I explained our needs, and he discussed different options. His first suggested layout of the replacement deck would have blocked the entrance to our basement, which I pointed out. "Oh, oh yeah, guess we can't do that then." We talked about a few different options, and I explained that we needed the quote provided with one part of the project as an optional add-on, because there was one part that for sure needed to be finished immediately and the other part was an "if we can afford to do this now as well" option. He assured me that he would break the quote down in that way. I spoke with two of his competitors that afternoon, and one of them suggested an option that we liked even better than the one he had suggested. David texted me with a question a couple hours later, and at that same time I told him about his competitor's suggestion and gave him the opportunity to bid on that option as well, since that's the direction we were likely going to go. He eagerly agreed that the option was a good one, and said he would bid on that option instead. When I got the bid the next day, it lumped everything into one big sum, no breakdown whatsoever. I texted him to ask about the breakdown of the optional add-on. And this is where things started to get weird. He texted a very curt response about me changing my mind about what we wanted. I explained that no, we just wanted him to be bidding on the same thing as everyone else, but that the request to break the project down into the two parts had never changed. His texts got increasingly belligerent so I finally got him on the phone. I apologized if there had been any confusion, and he yelled at me that there was no confusion, I was just wasting his time and changing my mind. He said that I couldn't just have him make all the quotes I wanted just because it was a free estimate... even though he had only provided me one quote and it hadn't even covered the job as requested. And I'm sorry, I not only have 90% of the conversation in writing via those texts, but after the mixup with the scheduled appt time, I don't exactly have faith in his ability to listen and retain information from his clients. Anyway, he screamed at me that he didn't want my business, I told him I'd be leaving a negative review, and he hung up on me. So I left a review on Google. Oddly enough, a few hours later I received a nasty message through my website. If you Google my name from my review, the first thing you'll find is the website for my work as an actor. Due to the pandemic I haven't done any acting work in over a year, so there is zero reason anyone would be stumbling across my site right now. And yet, through the contact form on my site, from an IP address that looks suspiciously associated with someone from this company, a "Rod Stiffington" (so clever and original) sent me this: "I recommend you give up acting because you suck. Your facial expressions look ridiculous. You need to realize that all you'll ever be is a failed actress..." (oh no I'm so hurt, how will I ever recover from this scathing professional review of my work) Reading reviews here, it seems like lashing out at people after they dare to give negative reviews is kind of his MO. Anyway. All around a horrible experience, and I happily signed with one of his competitors. read more

My condo building used Mr. Porch to rebuild our six flat sized deck due to coding changes. While the deck itself looks nice, I was extremely disappointed with the way they conducted business. We started the process in September 2014. Mr. Porch did not start until January. We experienced multiple delays, some do to obtaining a city permit (not the company's fault), but mostly on their end with planning and communicating with our building with updates and plans. We often had to initiate lines of communication with them. When they did start, the process was timely, however extremely messy. Not only did they use my yard as a staging area (without asking permission or stating that in the contract), thus essentially ruining my grass, they barely cleaned up after themselves after the project was finished. I was left to pick up garbage, numerous nails (which is a huge health concern for tetanus to anyone who walks barefoot outside), large pieces of wood, and displaced dirt and saw dust. When I brought this issue up to the company the excuse I received was "it was too cold for them to do a complete clean up." I am still dealing with the mess that was left from this company. I have had to rent large magnets to help find all of the nails left behind, have to re-seed multiple areas of my yard, and will likely have to replant a bush or two. The concrete slab also looks messy, they way the company cuts out the old supports and pours new ones is not at all attractive and does not even attempt to blend in with the original concrete. The niceness of a new deck was not worth the trouble for me. My upstairs neighbors may not agree, as they have a nice new deck, however they are not dealing with any of the issues on ground level. To be complete in this review, Mr. Porch did offer some money back for some of the delays. However, they have made no effort to try and fix any of the landscaping issues that have been caused as a result of their work. read more

Mr. Porch is a disaster. They don't even deserve one star. We hired them to build new 36 balconies and 18 patios.They did a terrible job (come and see 7600-7632 W Lawrence Ave, Harwood Heights). The project was supposed to take 3 months, but it has been 7 months and it is not done yet. He sent only 2 people to do this job. The painting is very bad (in some places you can see primer), the decks are not cut into accurately shaped pieces, the railings are not parallel, and the balconies look unfinished. By doing this job, they caused a lot of damage to people's windows, screen doors, tiles, etc,. Do not pay them upfront. Read the contract carefully because they ask for money before they start the job. He asked us for more money even though the job was not started. Now, when the project is almost paid off, he refuses to come back and fix what he has damaged. The owner is irresponsible and immature. We wanted to meet him and he avoided to meet with us. He promised to fix the problems, but never did anything about it. The employees are messy and for months they left things lying around that was inconvenient for residents to maneuver around. They also destroyed our landscaping. They never had any supervision and just worked on their own. Please take this as a warning before you make the mistake of hiring Mr. Porch. read more
