Our first stop was emerald cove, which is much smaller than I was anticipating, but still just as beautiful as the photos! On our way back, we detoured at a small rock beach, for a small hike up to a viewpoint where we admired the river from above. The high was 118 so the cool river water was the perfect way to cool off. We didn't actually get to jump with GoJump Las Vegas (they called us the night before to let us…read moreknow all jumps were cancelled), but I super appreciate their level of service leading up to it. I learned about GoJump from Groupon but had some follow-up questions. They have a text line where you can send them your questions, and they always responded within 1-2 minutes. They are super responsive :). GoJump was actually a little more expensive than other skydiving companies that we were looking at, but based on their availability and customer service, I was happy to go with GoJump. They also have a shuttle from Vegas (pickup by Excalibur) for $18 round trip, which is much more affordable than taking an Uber there. If you do want to purchase the Groupon, you have to call them to schedule, but they will also honor the Groupon directly - so no middleman (I would highly recommend booking directly). Unfortunately, as I mentioned, the actual skydiving didn't happen, but we were given the option to reschedule or get a refund. We were only in town for a short stint, so rescheduling wasn't an option, but getting the full refund is much appreciated, as that isn't something that all companies do. I also appreciate that they gave advanced notice for the cancellation so that we could plan the rest of our Vegas trip right away instead of waking up early and waiting around an airport only to have wasted half the day. Yes, we were bummed to hear that the trip was cancelled, but I get that weather is finicky and safety comes first. GoJump handled everything professionally and I commend them for that.

All super dusty after except my shoes were mostly good since it's kinda blocked. We first met at a place near the strip at 9AM and paid $20 cash parking. Then we signed waivers and rode as a group to the destination near Nellis Air Force base. They had all the ATVs lined up ready to go. After a quick demonstration, we geared up with the supplied helmet, goggles, and cotton gloves. We hopped on the ATVs and did a lap around first to shake off the nerves and get a feel for it before heading off. The ride was pretty tame as we followed along each other. We stopped half point to take a quick break and photos. Then continued on with more slightly curvy terrain. The paths we took were already predefined and just following along and doing laps around. This is a great beginner course or for anyone who doesn't want rough riding but still go outdoors with the family or friends. It was perfect for me and just my pace. We got to see the cool jet fighters flying past also. Overall great experience and Logan the tour guide was great thank you!

Had a fun morning riding ATVs out at Nellis Dunes. The team was great at explaining how to operate…read morethe ATVs and giving the safety briefing. I was initially apprehensive since it was my first time riding ATVs but after a few mins I got the hang of it and enjoyed the trail. A few people in our group brought face masks and head covers. I wish I would have brought one as I think that would have really helped from inhaling all the dust.

This is the visitor center for Lake Mead National Recreation Area. It's a great center with a small…read moregarden, restrooms (although they lock the washrooms when the center is closed), and a building with a gift shop and exhibits inside. When I stopped by, there was a traveling exhibit from the Hubbell Trading Post about Navajo weaving. There was someone even weaving on the loom demonstrating the process, and a whole bunch of rugs for sale. I would estimate there were over 100 rugs for sale. There were also some pottery and jewellery for purchase as well. Of course, there were the usual NPS things for sale (stickers, hats, books, etc). The exhibits in the Lake Mead Discovery Center were informative. They included stuff about the geology of the area, as well as how people have interacted with the river and the ecosystem.

I thought this was a nice place to stop in and get information and learn about the area. They have…read morea small museum with some nice exhibits, so plan on spending a little time there. A friend in the UK booked this trip through a company overseas for three of us, two who live in…read moreVegas and himself with plans of coming in from the UK but unfortunately his vacation had to be cancelled at the last minute. Being that we have used this tour company before and we are not shy about communicating to make sure we have an amazing experience, we reached out to confirm the trip was still on. We talked to Patsy and being now just two of us, they were not sure if it would make good business sense to still go based on minimal seating requirements as stated on their website. Patsy did offer other days for us to go on the tour, but due to scheduled vacation days already approved other days were not good for us. We were offered the opportunity to purchase the third seat if no one else signed up so the tour could go on as scheduled. We were told they would keep reservations open for this tour on Sunday, until Saturday night to see if anyone else would request it. We called back on Wednesday to let them know we would pay for the third seat if no one signed up. They waited until Sunday morning to charge us for the third seat as no one signed up for the tour that day. For those who are wondering, no we did not get a discounted rate for that third seat because of current fuel prices and the fact that this is a business and they have overhead and have to stay afloat and we were perfectly fine supporting this amazing company. Communication from this company was above and beyond any tour company we have ever dealt with. We started receiving text message around 6:00am Sunday morning to let us know the driver was on his way and when he would be arriving so we didn't have to wait on him and he didn't have to wait on us. It was above and beyond and to us really showed how accommodating this company is if you communicate with them as well. We got to our pickup location 5 minutes early and Mike our driver was there waiting for us. He got us loaded in the suv and explained the tour we would be doing and the things we would be seeing. Our first stop was Janet Airlines. The planes are in a secured area but can be seen through the fence, that's as close as you are going to get to those planes as they transport people to areas that are Top Secret and what's on each plane, the people who have the clearance to fly on them know. It's short stop and then we are on the road to Rachel, NV. Along the way, Mike who loves his job and has done a lot of research not to add he has a degree in history, he gives you an awesome education on the desert and mountains along the way. There is so much more to this desert, how it was formed and the species of plant life that grows out there. There is an extensive wild life that calls the desert home. We stopped at the Extraterrestrial Highway sign which is cool to see and there are some green trees around here which is interesting in the middle of the desert. If you look at the desert as being more than just dirt, the mountains and skies are so majestic and beautiful. We stopped at a Joshua tree and Mike explained the growth and its life cycle. We then go to one gate of Area 51. Mike gives an extensive explanation of this gate and the base. It's pretty cool to see the gate and the men in black as they are referred to sitting up on the hill watching you watching them. We stopped at the Alien mailbox which had always been used as a gathering sight. Area 51 is a Top Secret Base originally created by the CIA and eventually taken over by the U.S. Air Force to test secret military creations to help keep our country protected and free. Then it's on to the Alien Inn for lunch. If you are expecting a Gourmet, organic style lunch, you have sad expectations. This is a very cool little bar, restaurant and small hotel in the middle of no where...it's in Rachel, NV, it was created around the test sight that was put out there because of its remote location. After lunch we were off to the desert to see the hard packed clay which when dry is hard enough to land a plane on. Then we were headed back to Vegas with a stop at a gift shop and the long ride back to Alamo and on to Vegas. Mike is an excellent tour guide and being a Marine (which I put up with), he will tell you straight out, he will share with you all his knowledge he has obtained about anything and everything to and from. If you have questions, ask, he will answer them. If you want to talk, he is willing to talk about any subject you desire. If you desire to just stare out the window like a dog on a long trip, he is ok with that as well. Bottom line, a tour is what you make of it. Tour guides are here to make your experience the best it can be and if you ask questions, it makes it's a more exciting day for all involved. Mike had water and snacks for us and was an awesome host for an awesome company. We HIGHLY recommend this company for any of the tours they provide and have an amazing time.

We went on the Area 51 tour with our guide, Clayton. I can't express how AWESOME the experience…read morewas. The tour took about 9 1/2 hours and the conversation, scenery, plus all the points of interest along the way were amazing. We had the best time! Clayton was not only informative, but the topics of conversation flowed easily amongst all of the passengers. He was very considerate with checking in on all of our needs and making sure we were comfortable. I can't recommend this tour high enough! We loved every minute. The day flew by, plus we got amazing photos and memories! Thank you!

My current gig requires a certain level of fitness for pounding one leg and then another leg many…read moretimes over and over into the pavement. In my youth I could run like a gazelle....well, maybe a gazelle with a cheetah attached to one leg. This is not the case now. At this stage in my life, I run like a hippo, who is capable of quick speeds over short distance...a sprint that in short order becomes a lumbering trot. At 260 lbs, I have built myself up over the years in a different way, but I want to be better at running.....I really do. Never really heard or knew much about trail running. I had seen some trail running crazies while out and about in the Mojave and other difficult places. I have even seen them ditty bopping up to the peak of Mt. Charleston. I thought of this type of physical fitness activity as hardcore...and sometimes just plain insane. Since arriving at my current assignment, I have often heard from the more cardio fit coworkers spinning tales of being out in nature and getting after it on dirt trails. The conversation extended into trail shoes, playlists, trail names, fitness watches, and phone apps. Though I was never really a part of the conversation, I eavesdropped and a statement struck a cord with me. It was said trail running makes you a better runner on the hard top. Really? I love nature. I like fitness. I want to be a better runner. I then heard about Law Dawg Trail Tours (LDTT). For $30 bucks, LDTT would come and pick you up (house, hotel, etc.), and guide a trail running trip for you. I hopped on the computer and scheduled a trip. I spoke with the owner/operator, Josh about the when and the wheres. Josh is clearly passionate about trail running, trail running in Southern Nevada, and wants to share what he knows with others. He informed me the trail we would be taking did not require trail shoes, and my current go fasters would be fine enough. We set a date to go run the Calico Basin Trail and made arrangements for him to pick me up at my house at 7:00 in the morning on a Saturday. I woke up to a torrential downpour occurring outside. I was good to go, but was not sure if LDTT would be. I checked my phone and there was not text or phone message. Then I received a text at approximately 6:30, letting me know Josh was on his way. At 10 minutes till there was a light knock on the door. Much appreciated as it did not wake up the GF. I stepped out into the rain and placed my gear in an immaculate (minus being wet) looking Toyota FJ. Josh asked me I wanted a water or a snack but I was content with my bulletproof coffee. Off we went into the cloudy, rain soaked morning. While driving to the trail head, Josh threw out multiple factoids about Vegas, and that transitioned to factoids about the Red Rock area when it's beauty came into view. It helped cut the edge off nervous excitement I was feeling. When we arrived at the trail head, the rain was a still coming down. Josh gave a quick brief on the trail and running tips on how I should attack it. He threw some water, first aid kit, and other gear in a back pack and pointed the way. With a beep of his watch, we were off. We chatted about this and that as I enjoyed the cold, wet morning. With the first splash of a puddle, I was immediately reminded of my childhood and looked for every puddle to splash in after that. With every step I enjoyed my rising heart rate enjoying the surroundings. The desert a majority of time is one tough bitch. When in the desert during rain, you get to see and experience it's almost softer side. Water can most certainly invigorate and/or weaken just about anything, including the Mojave. The trail split this way and sometimes that way, Josh was behind me giving direction...tips on the value of duct tape, and.......more factoids! We would eventually summit a rather large hill after an approximate 500 foot elevation gain. I would imagine this vantage point offers a great view of valley below, but not on this day. The valley was sacked with moisture laden clouds. Not to matter, the clouds hanging around the Red Rock area, made for a beautiful and seldom seen landscape. After a photo op, we headed back down to complete this 3.5 mile trail. After much fun, many puddles, and spying a lone jack rabbit, we ended up back at the FJ and with a beep of the watch...we were done. With a huge smile on my face, I swapped out gear for some dry stuff. One thing I noticed as I was throwing on my flip flops, was that my knees, hips, and lower back weren't as sore as when I normally run on the streets. LDTT is punctual, knowledgable, friendly, and more than reasonably priced. I would imagine even a Uber/Lyft from anywhere on the Strip is going to be a pricey proposition. But to be picked up on the Strip or any other area of the Vegas for that matter, and taken to whatever trailhead you desire on the website, and guided after that...It just can't be beat!! I am now a convert!

Josh picked me up, in the cleanest vehicle I have ever been inside, immaculate!!! While on the way out to beautiful Red Rock Canyon we engaged in a variety of conversational topics. Josh is very knowledgeable about fitness, nutrition, and trail running. Upon our arrival at the Calico trail, Josh gave me the run down on what to expect and see along the moderately rugged path. Josh had great information about the area, the landscape, and some of the critters we may see along the way. We began our run, all along the way Josh made sure it was a comfortable pace for me, which is not real fast, but I could pass a desert tortoise if put to the test. The highlight of the 3 mile trail was getting to the top of the mountain we had circled along the way. What a view!!! The beautiful red cliffs to the west and the Las Vegas valley to the east!! What a great experience with a great tour guide!! I highly recommend Law Dawg Tours to anyone of any skill level to go out and set a path on these amazing trails!!

The club does a fantastic job organizing and planning every trip, and it's a great way to connect with like-minded locals. I recently completed the Mummy Head Loop hike with Valerie Evans. She was exceptionally professional, knowledgeable, and punctual. She paid close attention to every detail and ensured everyone in the group was safe and taken care of. After settling in the Las Vegas area, I mostly did solo hikes--just trying to find my tribe and connect with people who share the same passion. Then a special person introduced me to 52 Peak, and I'll tell you what--it's everything I needed and more. My fitness has gone through the roof, I'm pushing myself every week, and life just feels full of blessings. I'm stronger, more confident, and making better decisions in and out of the mountains.
