Ian and another guide were paddling down the river between Emerald Cave and Willow Beach when they spotted my niece and I sitting on our paddle boards around 3pm with nearly 30 mph winds keeping us slammed against the shore. We were on the edge of serious trouble. Exhausted, trying to paddle under inflated boards back to the marina. They asked us if we were ok. After hearing "no, not really", they hooked up tow ropes to our boards and paddled us back to the marina. I can't adequately write what I feel here. If you're coming to Vegas, this should be on your to-do list! A great way to get away from the traditional Vegas experience. The scenery is gorgeous- a supreme tranquility in the air. The added bonus was our river guide, Ian! He was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and flora/fauna of the region. And such a great conversationalist. Our first stop was emerald cove, which is much smaller than I was anticipating, but still just as beautiful as the photos! On our way back, we detoured at a small rock beach, for a small hike up to a viewpoint where we admired the river from above. The high was 118 so the cool river water was the perfect way to cool off. First off, this was a beautiful experience in the middle of a desert. We were looking for more than the run-of-the-mill Las Vegas show or whatnot when we found this wonderful excursion. After looking at ratings and reviews, I then looked at departure times. Kayak Lake Mead was the best for timing. If you're like my wife and I, LV is a late-night wonderland so it's tough to book anything in the morning. The 1pm departure offered by them gave us the ability to sleep in and make it there with time to spare, plus, you end up getting the place to yourselves. We must have paddled past two hundred kayaks, canoes or boats on our way up to the cove. I would be remised if I didn't mention I'm running up on "The Big Six Oh" and have gone on my share of guided tours and excursions, and Ian our guide was by far the best we've ever had. His vast knowledge of the area history and desert flora was amazing and his sense of humor and jokes had us in stiches. It was like a comedy show on the Colorado River. Highly recommended! We did the half day Emerald Cave tour and after days of hiking, it was nice to just work on our arms a bit. Water is chilly but felt great on a warm day (you really only have to get your feet wet, anything higher is optional). We saw several big horned sheep. The scenery was incredible and Ian is a fantastic guide. Super knowledgeable about the area, had great tips/tricks so we could take advantage of the timing to see the cave and stop at a nice spot for a short hike to see the best views of the area. His equipment seemed top notch compared to other tours we saw while out floating. You can tell he loves his job and enjoys meeting the people he takes out. A half-day kayaking excursion was a great way to do adventurously celebrate my Husband's birthday this weekend, especially during this time when social options are limited. Booking online was easy, and I was very happy to support a smaller, local outfit on the river. Eric R. and I had a great kayaking adventure on Saturday morning. Eric erroneously purchased a living social for one person thinking it was for 2, but owner Robert was more than happy to honor the same deal for me...to charity! Eric donated the half price amount to a designated charity tied to Ecuador (Robert is about to go to Ecuador to kayak and hike through the Amazon for a year!) and we were set for Saturday. To get to Willow Beach, we drove on 93 South through Boulder City, over the Memorial Bridge and into Arizona - after mile marker 14, there is a sign for Willow Beach to turn right 1/4 mile down. Then we winded our way down to the beach, just under 4 miles. It took between 45 minutes and an hour to and from Henderson. After parking, we grabbed our insulated lunch bag with waters and sandwiches and met Robert and his friend Paula at the kayaks. Another couple joined us and soon we were on our way. Robert and Paula showed us paddling techniques (first, how to get in the kayak of course, and then how to hold the paddle) and we were able to get in and practice. We were to use our torso to move and not just our arms, and I had to remember to extend my arms so I did not tense so much. Definitely bring sunscreen with you - I applied it 3 times but my thighs still got burnt :) Eric and I were in a tandem kayak but the other couple were in singles. We went against the current initially on the Colorado River, kayaking by small caves, drunken canoers, and motor boats. We ended up on a "beach" off the side of the river and Paula put down a blanket. We all had lunch and relaxed for a while. The water was 52 degrees which was quite cold and it was about 98 outside. Eric, who already took the polar plunge in Antarctica, thought nothing of jumping into the frigid waters after lunch. My feet could barely handle being in the water - got close to cramping and it was quite painful in there for me. On the way back, the current allowed us to drift back a little but being in a 2-person boat helped us get back to the starting point quite fast. It was a great experience! I had sore arms but epsom soaking and advil did the trick and I felt much stronger Sunday morning! While Robert is out of the country, his children will be running the business so you can still have your own kayak adventure! read more

The Date: March 22, 2020 The Location: Willow Beach Our Destination: Emerald Caves Our Leader & Guide: Morgan Eisen of Kayak Lake Mead Our Overall Experience: 5+ Stars! We had the time of our lives!! Morgan was awesome! He was prompt, professional, very patient, and most importantly, was entertaining. Although everyone in our group kayaked before, Morgan still covered the safety rules and gave us kayaking tips. A good leader leads from the back and that's exactly what Morgan did. He ensured that everyone was safe and kayaking in the right direction. We kayaked through Black Canyon, stopped at a small beach for a mini hike, made our way into the beautiful Emerald Cave (where the water is literally Emerald), stopped at another beach for a quick snack, and then back to Willow Beach. We picked the right day to be here too. The weather was perfect, and the water was calm. Wildlife even cooperated. We saw bighorn sheep chilin' on top of the mountains, carp jumping out of the water, ducks coasting by us, turtles sunbathing on a log, and even our national bird, the bald eagle, perched on an iron cable. The bald eagle looking down at me and giving me a nod as if to say that I'm an excellent kayaker was a highlight of our trip. The other highlight was of course, the Emerald Cave. I didn't take photos, but Morgan took a bunch (should be posted on their website soon). The water inside the cave is so clear and it even looks like it's glowing. We had a blast! Overall, I highly recommend Kayak Lake Mead if you plan to kayak through the Black Canyon. TIP #1: 1/2 Day Trip to Emerald Cave is $120 per person. You can book a trip through their website kayaklakemead.com. TIP #2: Kayak Lake Mead will send you directions and where to meet. TIP #3: Kayak Lake Mead will give you suggestions on clothing. I recommend that you bring some water shoes. TIP #4: Bring snacks or a meal with plenty of hydration. You'll get at least 30 minutes at one of the beaches to rest and eat. My SO and I kayaked just last week and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. It was my boyfriend's first time on a kayak and Morgan made him feel so comfortable, he now wants to buy our own! Robert was very responsive and worked with us on our short schedule. Our party of 7 had the best time on a full day kayak tour to the warm springs . Robert ( our guide) was so patient with us as we learned how to get moving the first mile. And set a good pace for us all the whole day. We did about 17 miles of kayaking stopping every 4 miles or so to relax , soak in the water, and take picture. Kayak lake mead is the absolute WAY TO GO if you're interested in kayaking (or...hiking, outdoor fitness, rock climbing, you name it). Kayak Lake Mead director/instructor/beast!, Robert Finlay, is awesome! He has kayaked and been in competitions all over the world...and has some pretty amazing stories. I was a complete beginner when I first contacted him about kayaking. He responded promptly, answered EVERY question I had in detail (and believe me, I had a TON of questions). Robert will completely tailor your day of paddling any way you'd like it. He knows the canyon/lake like the back of his hand and is able to tell you about various hikes you can do, petroglyphs to look at, places to explore or climb, etc. Your trip can be as calm/easy or extreme as you'd like it to be. They offer a variety of kayaks for different skill/comfort levels and they are all TOP of the line. I've now been on 3 trips (Emerald cave, petroglyphs, and up to the hot springs) and they have all been awesome and I plan several more. Robert also brings a camera to capture imagages of your day, and even made a neat little youtube video clip. I've had so much fun that I'm planning to get a kayak of my own to continue to explore on my own.
