    Dinner Bento Box, B
    Anthony C.

Checked out this Korean/Japanese place after disc golf on the island and had no real expectations. We tried to sit on the patio but it was full. Inside the décor seemed old and tired, but that didn't deter us. Ordered the Dinner B Bento box that included 6pc Shrimp tempura roll, 5pc assorted sushi, 9pc Sashimi and Bulgogi Beef. At $29.99 it seemed like a good value. The sushi and sashimi were ok .. I definitely had better and worse. I was pleasantly surprised with the Bulgogi Beef. It was a good portion size and there was a sweet undertone which was nice that Bulgogi should have. There was also 1 spring roll that wasn't crispy and in my opinion not really necessary. Overall, for what it is was, the place was ok and I would go back if I needed a sushi fix but there are better places out there.

I haven't heard of this place before, so I decided to give this a try. I tried out their Salmon Lover Combo since it had a good variety of everything and quite filling. However, I found it to be quite average and nothing special compared to other sushi places in Downtown. The sushi rice was too sticky. Overall, it wasn't bad but not something I would go out of my way for.

Mushy gluey flavourless rice . Otherwise Salmon & avocado quality/freshness was alright.

Not very good... ordered a simple salmon avocado roll to test this place out - while the avocado & salmon in it was mostly fresh, the rice on the outside was this horrible mushy gluey flavourless texture. It very obviously lacked all sushi vinegar. Not to mention it was $8 for a measly small 6 pieces. Better places downtown to go for more reasonably priced, better quality sushi. Side note: I'm from Vancouver, and have been to Japan twice. I know good sushi & fresh seafood!

I actually happened on Iruka Sushi by mistake! I was planning to get takeout from a Japanese restaurant in the same area (Guirei) but since the two were so close by I accidentally ordered from Iruka! It seems pretty funny to me that two Japanese restaurants would open up literally *so* close to each other. Anyway, my experience at both places was pretty much equal in terms of food quality and taste. The lady at the front who took my order at Iruka was extremely friendly, warm & welcoming, and the wait for my order of tempura udon was only 15-20 minutes. My order also came with miso soup on the house and wrapped up to be about $15 which I thought was reasonable. There is an additional 10% off if you pay with cash though. The udon and tempura itself were fine -- there wasn't a wow factor, but it was pretty good. The miso soup was seasoned well and it was piping hot and delicious. I thought the coating on the tempura was a little too thick and lumpy, but other than that it was very crispy and crunchy. The udon was tasty too! Pretty standard Japanese restaurant overal

Went to Iruka in the afternoon on a weekday. It's a fairly small place so I wouldn't recommend going here with a big group during peak hours. However when I went it wasn't very busy so we were able to sit anywhere. I ordered a salmon teriyaki Bento box and it came with salad, rice, tempura (shrimp and vegetable) and of course, rice. The food came pretty quickly and it seemed like it was freshly deep fried. The price was not too cheap, but also not very expensive. They also give you complimentary corn tea and a very small noodle in soup appetizer. The lady who served me was very kind. I would definitely come back here again if I'm in the area.

    Iruka sashimi dinner - $29

Cute little sushi place near harbourfront. Very warm and welcoming ambience and the service is pretty great. The meal comes with "chicken noodle soup" which comes in a little bowl and is pretty tasty. And depending on what you order you'll usually get a miso soup and salad to start. We ordered the Iruka sashimi dinner (25 pc) but unfortunately the cuts were inconsistent and sometimes ridiculously small. We've ordered the smaller sashimi dinner in the past and the value was much better. But all in all the fish is fresh and the rolls are nice and big. Our friends ordered the chicken katsu which looked really yummy too.

We stumbled upon this little place our last night in the city. The waitress was so nice and polite! The food took a little while but was worth the wait. The sushi had big pieces but everything was fresh. The katsu was very good and flavorful. The miso was a little skimpy but tasted good.

This is our new sushi spot in the area, definitely the best option around lakeshore! I don't understand some of the reviews, I go there every week and everything is always delicious and fresh. The service is great too, shop local and small businesses!

Surprisingly this place makes a decent ramen. The sushi is average and so is the service. Keep in mind I've only done take out at this restaurant and this could be the reason why my experience has been been so so

Very poor value. More than half the fish is salmon!

Very poor value. I ordered the Sashimi Moriawase and they gave me the smallest slices of fish I ever seen in my life. This was 20 pieces and more than half the fish was salmon! I am still starving as I write this. Service was good though. I will give them that. Clean space. But terrible value.

Stopped by for a quick snack before our dinner reservations at a different restaurant (we were starving after a long walk by lakeshore). Definitely worth it! (Full review to come when we go back for a real meal) The rolls came in a timely matter, and the service as good. The restaurant is quite small, could probably fit about 40 patrons. It was less than half full when we were there. The decor was cute, nice and clean as well. We only ordered one thing off the menu to share and it was the Black Dragon Roll (SM13 on the menu). It was delicious, the ingredients were fresh, the rice was perfect and the sauce made it even better. I didn't even use the soy sauce. It had a really comforting feeling in my mouth, a feeling that you don't get at every sushi restaurant. We were on the verge of ordering more but we had to leave room for dinner but we will definitely come back for a full meal.

Chicken Katsu Yuki Ramen at the top, bottom is a spicy avocado roll (left) and an AAC roll (right).

There's no reservation system but they do have a waitlist on Yelp which gets you in line (highly recommended). First to know is you can't pay with credit card here--there's an ATM in the front of the restaurant. As far as the restaurant goes, it was fantastic from start to finish. Our table of 4 was seated and serviced by 1 main staff member, Lydia, who talked us through the whole menu and ordering system, recommended some great starts and then kept us frequently updated all throughout dinner. She checked up on us along with her assistants who were also bringing items and servicing the table. The food quality was excellent with juicy and flavorful cuts of beef along with the shrimp, pork, veggies, side dishes/ponchon, and rice--it kept coming consistently. Grill changes were frequent as well. The atmosphere is lively and there are a lot of servers so you aren't trying get someone's attention all the time. But it doesn't feel too cramped at the same time. As it is AYCE, everyone in our group left full of course and enjoyed each course. I liked the almond tofu at the end! ----TL;DR---- Pros: great selection of meats, quality was top notch, huge portions of course as it is AYCE, service was prompt and all staff were really friendly. Cons: no reservations so need to be on a waitlist. The no credit card system is a bit of an inconvenience. Bottom Line: we loved it--definitely would go back again and enjoy more of their selections! You have to try them if you like meat and AYCE!

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). Location is super convenient near Bay & Dundas, ambiance is very casual, and service is quick.

We got a bunch of dishes to share and overall liked most things but some things (like the oyster) unfortunately didn't hit as well. Wagyu - thin slices but very tender and very flavorful with the cheese - surprised by how well the flavor combo worked out. Tofu - easily one of my fave agedashi tofu. Huge tofu slices with very chewy outer texture, a bit gelatinous . Really went well with the sauce and toppings Carbonara - nice chewy texture to the udon, not too soft and not too firm. The sauce was nice and creamy. Not as truffley as I thought it would be, wish it was a little more but it was still pretty good Oyster - least favorite of all the dishes we got today. It was a bit sour and the cheese felt like it didn't really help the flavor profile of the oysters. It was super oily from the cheese, felt like it was drowning in cheese/oil flavor Cod - it looks good but something is lacking, maybe in taste? Feel like maybe the marinade did not penetrate enough. The texture is still nice and soft , with a crisp skin . Also was a bit too oily for our liking, compared to other miso cod we have had. It was also a relatively smaller piece of cod. Overall, the appetizers were really good! The oyster and cod were a bit disappointing. Would come back for the carbonara and the other appetizers mentioned though!
