We've been here before, just us two, but our 3&4yo was interested in the idea. We came on a Sunday, almost right at opening and they were great with the kids. We went with the lunch ayce and it was more than enough for us. My older one loved the meat while the younger loved their gyozas. He ate 8 of them among other things...and after ny big devoured the meats, he downed four (small) bowls of plain ramen. It's great that it's $5 for 4&under but a quick jump up to $15 at 5+. I love how they've renovated the space, it's really quite pretty... and it's quite spacious and large! We saw a number of large (young) groups eating. Service is attentive and quick - we like how they're speedy with your orders unlike other places that make you wait. We'll be back! read more

Heard good things about this place and also liked that they offered both bbq and many other cooked items like sushi, udon, and appetizer. The food was good, and we enjoyed the variety. I definitely ate to the point where I couldn't eat any more. They offer you Haagen-Dazs at the end which is nice. When we arrived, it wasn't too too busy and we had reservations. They sat us down prompted and I think they started the 2hr time limit right away. The food came promptly and everything tasted good. I think there was a bit of miscommunication since almost all the beef we ordered didn't come. Wasn't a big deal since we just put it in our next order. The thing that bothered me a bit more was that around 1hr and 10 minutes in, they told us it was last call for food. I was a bit shocked cause last call was suppose to be 30 min left. I clarified the time we sat down and the waiter was super nice about it. Regardless, it gave me the sense that they really wanted to rush us out so they could seat another guest, which doesn't feel great. The atmosphere was bustling and our seating had lots of space. With the rise of AYCE yakiniku style restaurants in the city, Torontonians now have lots of options to choose from. And since I have a love affair with grilled meat, I'm on a quest to find the best one in town. We came around past 2 pm and since last call for lunch is at 3 pm we inquired if we can stay past this hour. They confirmed that yes we can stay for another hour. We were promptly seated in a booth. The restaurant has a huge space and surprisingly quiet even though it's busy. Taisho operates on gas grills unlike others which use electric so it has the ability to maintain even heat distribution and provides a more traditional bbq flavour. There's one server(Shoko) who takes your order. She mentioned that they have a promo for free drinks if you give them a 5-star review but we politely declined. We ordered all the beef and pork meat choices to try and were impressed by the high quality and marbling of their meat. It delivers a succulent and rich flavour when grilled. They also have an extensive list of sides available including gyoza and takoyaki. The addition of sushi rolls in their menu is a plus for me especially the torched pressed salmon sushi which is quite good. Dessert comes in the form of a Nestle drumstick minis and not the usual generic ice cream. The only downside is the slow service and some orders not arriving. We have to follow-up a couple of times before we finally got our order. Personally, I like Taisho better than Gyubee as the former has Signature Sushi and Poke bowls. In retrospect, Gyubee has some dishes that Taisho doesn't offer but the tight and cramped seating is what turns me off with coming back to Gyubee. read more

I enjoyed it here!! The food was tasty, I liked how everything was seasoned. Their menu selection is also really fun, with unique items like salmon ikura don, hand rolls, and poke bowls. The restaurant space is sleek and clean. Service was pretty quick and attentive... not perfect; there were a few spotty moments but aside from that they were friendly. They do seem to really start rushing you towards the end... they're pretty strict with that 2 hour seating limit, even on a weekday when there was not actual wait when we left... but I can appreciate that time management. Bill came to $97 for 2 people on a weekday before tip. So it's pretty comparable to other jbbq AYCE spots... maybe slightly pricier but I think it's worth it for the extended menu. Amazing Japanese style yakiniku bbq restaurant in downtown Toronto! Futuristic sleek led interior with comfortable private booth seating. Came in at 6:30 pm and got the last available table. We were seated quickly. Scan QR code for menu and order with server. All the items were high level dishes in quality, taste and presentation. Not your average AYCE place. The yakiniku grill is almost flameless and smokeless. They don't put extra sauce on most of the meat dishes so there's no spitting and fires on the grill. The cooked dishes and sushi on the menu were fantastic better than a lot of à la carte Japanese restaurants. Dessert menu a bit sparse but you get one choice of ice-cream and option for crème brûlée. There is some association with the restaurant Charidise also on Baldwin street. We ordered green tea and this came in a branded Charidise cup and the matcha ice cream as well. And of course, the standard beef, chicken, pork and seafood slices and slabs to grill are tasty and pretty good quality. Price is comparable to other top Japanese bbq, but you get more variety for it. Place is more spacious than it looks from the outside. Service is quick and attentive. Good Japanese barbecue which is a competitor to gyubee. Unfortunately, I think this spot falls second. They have a larger variety of menu items which includes sashimi or raw fish, but in general, the meats are not as high quality or fresh as gyubee. I also didn't enjoy the marinades as much. Customer service here is great though. Seating is relatively spacious. Like other Japanese barbecue spots you will need to Wait in line since it can get busy in the evenings. We were on the wait list for approximately an hour on a Friday evening. There are also very limited washrooms and sometimes there's a lineup. read more

Went to Taisho for AYCE and really enjoyed the experience! The restaurant is clean and the staff are pretty attentive as they come to the table to take your order. We went on a saturday at 3pm and the restaurant was pretty empty, did not need to wait in line. The location is also very convenient to easily walk to spadina, ago, grange park and more! The marinated short ribs and beef brisket were really good! The lamb had a very oniony taste to it which I didn't enjoy as much as the other beef dishes. Highly recommend the avocado handrolls and takoyaki as well! There aren't a lot of vegetarian options - you can order corn and mushrooms but they're very buttery. The lettuce comes in leaves that you can use to wrap the meat in. I don't recommend ordering the salmon ikuri don because it comes with a raw quail egg on top of raw fish - I was too nervous to try! I was disappointed in the creme brûlée dessert as the sugar on top was hard and weirdly crunchy and the filling itself tasted more like egg than a creamy centre. read more

I've only experienced Japanese BBQ from Gyu-Kaku so I can only compare to that. The meats were definitely on par, if not better. The other menu offerings definitely got me. Walked in on a Friday night with two friends and waited one and a half hour for a table. We tried to make reservations online the day before but was not able to. I would recommend making reservations a few days/week in advance to avoid the crazy wait. I love the variety of food they offer... bbq meat, veggies, poke bowl, sushi hand roll, takoyaki, curry udon, and the list goes on and on. The food was so tasty and flavourful. My favorite was the salmon hand roll, marinated short rib and sweet potato. They had Häagen-Dazs (perfect mini size) and creme brûlée for dessert to finish off the meal. Been hearing a lot of great things about Taisho but I would rate it as low to mediocre. I came here for a bday party, service was great everyone was very friendly and attentive. The place was nice, clean and spacious. However, I was not a fan of the meats the cuts were all so small and thin that it stuck to the grill. But I did like how they had poke bowls, hand rolls and other food options you can order. The tea drinks were really good, I would recommend that. For dessert they offered Haagen Dazs ice cream bars and creme brûlée. Wasn't a fan of the creme brûlée it had split and became grainy. read more

Located in Baldwin Village, this AYCE Japanese BBQ spot has a wide assortment of meats, dishes, and sides, all of which are high quality and packed with flavour. My personal favourites were the Miso Brisket, Ebi Shrimp, Spicy Crab Poke Bowl, and Crème Brûlée. We tried Taisho during their soft opening and had a 20% cash discount. We arrived and they were really busy but we had a reservation and got sat within 10min. They were new but it seems like the staff was running all over the place and a bit chaotic. Our first round of food came quickly and it was pretty good. Clams came with the shell to place on the grill directly that was new to us. They have a few sushi and poke stuff on the menu. Things turned downhill after we put our 2nd order while finishing our last few plates of meat. It felt like we were waiting over 20min while our table was empty. After our food arrives we were missing some stuff and had some items come out really late as we were paying the bill. They were missing some desserts were was disappointing. I have been waiting for Taisho Japanese grill restaurant to open for awhile. I like it how they have an anti pasto section while you wait for your food to cook on the grill, you can order ajitsuke tamago, the egg that we have in the ramen. Nicely marinated. The tea quail eggs were flavourful. The salmon tartar was just like a mini version of the ones we order in Japanese restaurants with two crutons. The handroll were served sideways on a wooden stand, almost like tacos. I enjoyed my torched salmon handroll. Onto the protein and grilled items, the different types of marinated beef were fresh and I like the kick for the wings, it's peppery and they cut it in half for easier cooking. The salmon in a foil had butter and onions. Delicious. The jumbo shrimp were a good size and the squid was tasty. Osa, our waitress was very friendly, attentive and helpful. Last but not least, the dessert they have were s'more, HÄAGEN-DAZS VANILLA MILK ICE CREAM BARS and Creme Brulee. Happy ending to the meal! Come check this new Japanese bbq out! read more

If you like to cook your own food at a restaurant, I'm sure you'll love it If you like small amounts of food, brought you at a time , to cook at once, for high prices, yet, you'll love it. This is not my type of place. My son wanted to come here for his 30th birthday and he got what he wanted. He enjoyed himself his girlfriend enjoyed herself and my other son enjoyed himself. I did not enjoy myself. The only good part of this dinner was being with my two boys at the same time. That makes all the difference in the world to me . But as far as everything else, if I go to a restaurant, I want the food cooked for me and brought to me. You're given such little amounts of meat and you have to sit there and cook it on a small little grill. It's just so tiny. It takes forever to even get full which I wouldn't even know because I never got full. I was still hungry when I left. This place is also very overpriced as far as I am concerned. It was $40 per person and to sit there and wait to be brought some raw meat, for me to cook, and have it be hardly anything at all, and leave hungry it's totally not worth it. To me, I thought the tables were too close together, it was very loud in there, our waitress was not great, it took everything so long, even to get our check it was just ridiculous. It's been a while since we went to Charidise, and if you haven't been there for a while, this is the time to come back. They recently added Taisho which is a AYCE high quality premium Japanese grill house. Taisho offers a lunch special on the weekdays where you could pick either set that includes protein, soup, rice and three side dishes chosen by the chef. It's a good portion size if you're not looking for AYCE, but still want a taste of Japanese bbq The staff were very attentive to us, and always came to check if everything was okay. The AYCE menu also has a good selection of proteins, including the popular Prime Kalbi which was the best, and they also have some sushi tacos and salmon ikura Don! I was surprised how buttery the salmon ikura Don was, and although it comes in a small bowl, you can always order seconds I think the best part was for dessert, they had different options compared to other JBBQ places such as drum sticks and Haagen-Dazs ine cream for dessert (1 per person/1 or the other option). Was visiting from the United States. Unfortunately we didn't get to try the restaurant because they only accept cash or debit card. We didn't have enough in Canadian dollars and when we asked if they accept USD they said $1 CAD for $1 USD! I don't think so! There's a 30% difference on the exchange rate in favor of USD, why would we agree to that??They should either say no or give a reasonable exchange. My friends and I (6 people in total) have been seeing a lot of reviews about this AYCE restaurant on social media, so we have decided to check it out over the holiday to see if it lived up to the hype. We were seated at their regular big tables that had 2 grills installed, and it was quite roomy despite we all had our thick jackets bunched up next to each other. You order all the meats and dishes with the waitress and the options can be found on their QR code menu. However, the QR code led you to their menu portal which looked like you could have just ordered yourself via the site. The speed of delivering our orders was quite prompt. They offered quite an extensive menu- from your ordinary raw meats to appetizers, they even have hand rolls and poke bowls included in your dinner. We have ordered almost every meat on the menu as well as their appetizers... pretty much the entire menu!! Our highlights were curry udon, duck breast, fried sushi roll, and grilled salmon. However, the marinating of the meat was a bit sweeter than in some other BBQ places, so it was quite filling as a result. For desserts, unlike the majority of the BBQ places where melon popsicles were offered, they have Haagen Daz ice cream instead. Creme Brulee was also on the menu, but it tasted off. It has a scrambled egg taste and an odd oily and thick texture inside your mouth. We suspected the eggs weren't tempered properly during the mixing process. Worse of all, you were only allowed ONE creme brulee, that's it! We were all shocked by the rule initially but after one bite of that creme brulee, it makes sense to be offered ONE as you don't want a second bite of that. read more

The fire in the grill was very unstable and kept flaring up really high in bursts, to a point that it felt unsafe. There was smoke being emitted from the inside of the grill before we even cooked anything which was very unsettling. We reported this issue to the servers and they tried changing the fire pit, and when they took it out it crumbled and fell apart which was probably what caused the flaring flames. Eventually they moved us to a different table but the other table had the same issue. The grilled meat was alright but everything else was incredibly mediocre. All of the dishes - marinated meat, Japanese curry, ramen eggs, and other side dishes etc - were overly salty, which along with the grill issue, made it difficult for us to eat a lot. This made this AYCE experience not an enjoyable one. To add insult to injury, we were limited to only one ice cream each and we got the nestle drumsticks but it was the MINI version. To be honest that was our last straw. The servers were friendly and helpful despite the bad reviews about them. I feel like it's more of an issue of management's lack of care of for customers, both for our safety and overall experience, and also trying to cut costs in all aspects. There is no reason to come here over Gyubee so we won't be coming back. read more
