Came here for the first time. Was a little disappointed by their selection. It has a good size menu, but it's mostly just rolls, and the rolls don't really have a variety of choices. It's all either salmon, shrimp or crap. The sashimi was ok. Not the freshest we have had. They come in decent sizes. What sold us was their limited menu for the holiday. But the sauces in it were weird. The place itself has a good selection of seatings. But it does get busy on the weekends. It's best to make a reservation to skip the wait. read more

There are so many AYCE Japanese restaurants now in Toronto, Markham and Richmond Hill that it's no longer chat special anymore. So for the restaurant to standout, they really have to be creative. And Ka Ka downtown location has proven that they are up for the challenge. They really do stand out. Firstly, their menu selection is quite extensive and more importantly the food is always well prepared. And they came up with a new concept, hand roll cart that comes to your table and makes the hand rollsfresh in front of you. This is really the main reason why I picked Ka Ka on Bay street. I called the Markham location and they said they are not related to Bay street location so they don't have the hand rolls cart. It's too bad because going downtown is not that convenient. They do have an underground parking that is reasonable priced. They also have cash discount(Ivthink 5%ooff) and student discount (10%off). This was probably our 2nd dinner visit this year and probably been here 5 or 6 times already so we'll likely be back as soon as we have a reason to celebrate or just craving for haand rolls(it's really so tasty when they make it fresh!). read more

The restaurant was spacious, and we got our own booth. I especially enjoyed the tableside handroll, made right in front of you. It was so fresh and delicious; highly recommend. Wanted to try some AYCE sushi while in Toronto and was pleased with KaKa. Surprised with the low ratings but I figure there's a high bar here. Decent AYCE sushi can be harder to find in some parts of the US, so I thought this was a solid spot. Service was prompt and efficient, we received our food at a reasonable pace. We had to wait a bit, so I'd guess a line is consistent here. Friendly for large groups as well. The ability to order sashimi was a huge plus, since I've been to places where they don't offer or restrict it in some way. Torched sushi was definitely a highlight, but rolls were solid as well. Wow, it's been several years since I last visited KaKa, and I remember it was so hard to get a table when they first opened, but I thoroughly enjoyed the food. I think they were one of the first sushi shops that brought the torched sushi trend to Toronto back in the day. I'm usually not an AYCE person, but my friend was craving it, so here we are. It's much easier to get a seat on walk-in for dinner these days, we only waited 10 mins. There are some new things on the menu, like tableside hand rolls, which were great! Not too much rice-to-fish ratio. We also had a selection of sashimi, which is cut on the smaller side, but you can always order more, and it's all fresh. We also recommend the short rib, tataki and beef skewers. The torched sushi is really good but also came with a lot of rice, so I would recommend the tataki more and order less of the torched sushi. They also had the sashimi tacos, which is something new, but we didn't enjoy them too much because the fish was a bit dry on top and needed some extra lemon or sauce to make it more palatable, I think. Specialty rolls were good, and so was the tempura selection. They also have quite an assortment of desserts, I recommend the KaKa ice cream (green tea with mochi) and the creme brulees. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time, and the servers were helpful. We paid about $43.95/person + tax and tip on Friday for dinner, which is reasonable for all the food we had. read more

Everything is tiny enough that you wouldn't lose much stomach space if you really don't believe me and want to try more things. Don't bother with the rolls. Three must haves: 1. Tataki 2. So I've eat here several times. They have two menus, A La Cart and All You Can Eat. The all you can eat is pretty decent and for an all you can eat sushi restaurant they have a good selection of food including aburi pressed sushi (which is my favourite) and tataki (raw meat kind of dish). I will say it's on the pricier side but for the selection it makes sense. Staff are nice and the food comes out quickly. For the a la cart, the food is pretty affordable, cheaper than some of your cheap eats sushi places to be honest. And as someone who can't eat as much anymore, it's a little more worth it. Not the most amazing sushi I've ever had but it hits the spot. It's a great place to go out and eat with friends but be warned there is a time limit for busier days like weekends. I came here really hungry so I was ready to try as much as I could: These stood out to me: - miso soup - seaweed salad - unagi nigiri and salmon sushi - all the aburi +/- oshi nigiri - ahi tuna/salmon/albacore tuna tataki - salmon and butterfish sashimi - shrimp and sweet potato tempura - came out freshly fried! - green tea and red bean ice cream - sake tiramisu I probably won't get these next time: - takoyaki: had 2 small pieces of tako in it, rest batter, and it was not warm/hot - was a belly filler - any of their maki - felt like the rice was a bit dense and I didn't enjoy these as much as the nigiri - Chef Frank special - this one was said to have salmon, "hokkaido scallop," cucumber, crab meat salad, avo, spicy mayo, unagi sauce, and tobiko. The photo on the menu showed a really good size of scallop but what came to the table was the smallest piece of scallop that was unrecognizable (now that I'm reflecting - was it actually scallop?!!) - mushroom and crab meat tempura - wasn't too special - earl grey creme brulee Service was pretty good and we didn't wait too long after we put in our orders. We had 3 rounds of food and 1 round of dessert. Max seating time was 1.5hrs and last call was around 10-15 minutes before the end. It started getting quite busy after 5pm but still lots of seating. Came here on a Thursday slightly early as I was alone and didn't wanna wait for a table if I went close to dinner time. I walked in 5:00pm and got sat down right way. I find this place lack choices but I heard they do unlimited hand rolls so I tried this place. The rolls I found the sushi rice not fully cooked so I couldn't finish it. The hand rolls made fresh to order infront of you was ok the choices were decent but it was not wowing me. I like that they have a lot of tataki choices with the sashimi so no need to order just plain sashimi. Would I come back probably not I'll probably stick to my uptown ones like momo koko. If I want sushi downtown stick to Jsan or monkey sushi where you get value for the price but not an ayce. It was also very hard flagging down a waiter or waitress and took like 1 hour before the handroll guy got to my table. read more

Their pricing is very fair both as an AYCE and for a la carte and they have quality sushi combinations. We were here for a la carte ordering the Eel Fried Rice, KAKA Signature Oshi, and Chef Frank Special. It was plenty of food for two as a late lunch. The Eel Fried Rice was an amazing surprise, it was full of eel meat in every bite and the portion was filling for two people. The KAKA Signature Oshi and Chef Frank Special had large pieces that were flavorful and had a good ratio of rice to protein. The service was very quick and attentive. The online menu is the most up-to-date and had a lot of choice. The servers were available and provided extra utensils and seasonings without a fuss. They seated us quickly and came over once we were ready to order as well as ready to pay. Will be back to try their bentos and other sushi combos! Came out to Premium Dining AYCE Experience at Kaka on a Saturday night. The Premium Dining Experience offers you an opportunity to try AYCE Premium sushi and sashimi that are excluded from the standard AYCE menu. This would include but not limited to scallop, A5 Japanese waygu, hamachi, bluefin tuna. Right from the beginning, the service at Kaka stood out. The waitress gave me a brief but concise rundown of how the premium dining AYCE experience was like. For example, all items in the premium limited selection and uni section was only limited to one order per person. The remaining sections such as tataki, roll, sashimi, and nigri were AYCE. They would also introduce each item they placed on the table (as this was very helpful for me as I was not always sure what it was). I had the opportunity to try all the items on their premium menu and it truly felt like an omakase experience. My favourite items came from the premium limited section. The mini don was filled with fresh bluefin tuna toro, ikura and japanese rice, baked lobster tail was delicious and the miso black cod absolutely stood out with the fish being soft and a beautiful cream sauce on the side. In terms of rolls, I also absolutely enjoyed the golden dust roll - eel and black tobiko and big bluefin tuna roll -akami and chutoro. Other recommendations include all the A5 Wagyu beef nigri and smoked beef and bluefin tuna sashimi. However, if have a big appetite, I would recommend trying all the items, especially the sashimi as all were filled with richness in flavour and soft in texture. If you enjoy premium fish and continuous order from the Premium menu, like me, I think its worth a one time experience as this was also a celebratory meal for me. Don't forget the experience includes the standard menu as well. However, those who are indifferent when it comes to the fish or a light eater may not see value in trying out this experience. We were quite surprised to get over cooked, flavourless rice. The standard condiments were provided, however when asked for hot sauce, they said they charge $2 for hot sauce to accompany our meal. I was very surprised. My maki lover set was an absolute flavourless disappointment, the rice was completely over cooked, and unseasoned. The katsu bento box wasn't anything special either. I read so many good reviews about this chain AYCE sushi restaurant. My friends and I booked a reservation for 7:30pm on a weekend for a group of 10, but we arrived early and the staff were able to seat us at 7pm. There isn't a physical menu, you're asked to scan a QR code to view their menu online and write down what you want on paper and pencil that they provide. There's such a large selection to choose from. But many of these items you can get at other AYCE sushi restaurants. However, there are some items that you can't get at other AYCE places, like the aburi sushi. It was all quite decent, some items were better than others. For instance, I really liked their unagi (eel). The sushi was fresh. After ordering, the food arrived fairly quickly and at a good pace. The fish here is really good, and the selection of items is amazing. I love their menu. However the quality of fish fluctuates. Some visits, it is good, some visits it is really bad. I dont know why. If you go here make sure you try the specialty rolls. Service is the worst. The people here are not friendly, and barely speak english. They also are very mean and have weird rules. We had ordered 50+ pieces, and maybe left 2, because the shrimp was disgusting, and the waitress had the audacity to say if you dont eat it we will be charging a waste charge. We replied saying how its 2 pieces, so she should rethink what shes saying... This sushi place is the worst restaurant I've ever been to. Anything that could go wrong with a restaurant, is going wrong here. First of all, it's located in the worst plaza. Lots of traffic getting into the plaza and even if you do, good luck with finding a parking soot less than 1-minutes walk away. Secondly, they have the worst customer service. And why should their staff even try to be nice? Cause mandatory 15% tip included in the bill, whether you were satisfied with the service or not. The staff are very rude; they yell at you; they don't pick up the empty plates from your table and even when they do, they throw the plates in the bin with a very loud noise that hurts your ears! The lunch menu options are very limited and when the food is served, it's very cold. The shrimp tempuras in the maki rolls were very cold. The ingredients weren't fresh and very oily. They also offer lobster tail, black cod, abalone, and mini don as part of their premium omakase selection, but only one order per person. If you enjoy premium fish and continuous order from the Premium menu, then the extra $55 would be worth it. Don't forget that you can also order from their standard menu as well. However, if you're not indifferent when it comes to the fish or you're a light eater, then the extra may not be as worth it. For me, I absolutely loved the Premium fish as part of my AYCE experience and feel like I made my money's worth. The fish were super fresh, as well as the scallop. The waygu was just okay to me, and the duck was a bit tough. In addition, the service we received was amazing. We didn't only have one dedicated server and everytime they brought something out, they would let us know what it is. Probably the best AYCE service I've received. We ordered so many things as it's "AYCE". We got a variety of torched sushis, Maki rolls, fish taco, salmon tataki, salmon terikayi. The most surprising was the Fish taco, it was flavourful and crispy. The taco shell was different from the norm. It was super cripsy and tasty. Torched sushi was good but the only negative I feel was that it was filled with alot of rice, I mean A LOT of rice. It kills the fish flavour, because you end up with a mouth full of rice than the fish. It would have been great if they went easy on the rice to balance the flavour. To end our dinner we got Vanilla crème brûlée and popcorn ice cream. No complaints. It was delicious. Overall this place is good. Fast service and great customer service. read more

Stumbled upon KaKa on my last night here in Toronto and after having tried multiple AYCE sushi restaurants in the city, we were very happy and surprised with our last meal here. My friends and I were searching for food on Yelp before we landed here and what better way to start our 12-hour bus ride back than with a stomach full of good food? When we arrived there was a good 30-minute wait but thankfully the restaurant was very accommodating and offered to hold our bags for us while we explored the area. We were also thankful that they allowed one of our friends to eat food brought from outside as he at the last minute did not feel like eating sushi anymore. After a short wait, we were finally seated and there must have been a special event happening because they were serving sashimi specials. One of the items brought out was their hamachi and it has been by far one of the best hamachi pieces I've ever had. Second to the hamachi I had in Hawaii. I am always skeptical of fish quality in AYCE spots, usually, it's good enough, but with the sashimi here I almost thought we were at an Omakase. The rest of the food came out quickly despite how busy they were. My favorite part of this entire meal was their dessert selection. They had more than just the usual ice cream in a cup. We ordered around 10 plates of their Earl Grey creme brulee and pana cottas. The Earl Grey is super strong and not too sweet and really made the tea stand out all the more. Next time im back in Toronto, I will certainly be back here for their dessert alone. Even tho they were very busy, the entire dinner ran very smoothly. Which is really a trivial matter, since with AYCE there's no reason not to share...unless you're just a selfish only child who hates sharing like I am. We found this sushi place next to our hotel in downtown Toronto and decided to give it a try. We had an option of all you can eat or ala karte, and we choose ala karte. Sushi was very mediocre to say the least. We ordered three different rolls and toro nigiri. Toro nigiri was very tiny. All rolls tasted funky, not what we used to eat in Portland Oregon sushi bars. Service was not good either. They never brought our hot sake (waitress apologized for that later), and they charge $2.00 for each sauce (like sriracha or spicy mayo). I have never seen sushi restaurants charge for sauces. We only liked one thing out of all that we ordered - miso soup. It was very good. read more
