I've been shopping at this grocery store for years, and it's truly one of my favorite places to go. The owners are some of the kindest, most genuine people you'll ever meet -- they absolutely adore my children and always go out of their way to give them little candies and treats, which means so much to us. Their homemade bread, baked fresh on-site, is honestly some of the best bread I've ever had. The hummus from Kubba House is incredible, and the produce is always fresh, beautiful, and priced amazingly every single day. What really sets this store apart, though, is the atmosphere. Very disappointing experience. I bought raspberries at Ishtar yesterday, and when I got home and opened them, I discovered that they were rotten. Not just one or two berries--the package was essentially unusable. I called the store this morning hoping to speak with someone and resolve the issue directly. Someone answered the phone and then hung up on me, which made the experience even more disappointing. Fresh produce should be checked before it is sold, especially delicate and expensive fruit like raspberries. I understand that occasionally a bad package can slip through, but I would expect the store to at least answer the phone and address a customer's concern. I've shopped this market off and on for some time. It's solid, but it is a place I don't go out of my way for. I only go there when I am in the area. It seems like they are trying to cover a wide range of grocery items, but may not have the throughput they need to keep everything fresh. They also don't seem to have the staff they need to keep everything tidy. Though I have never found the place dirty it as not as well-kept as one might like a grocery. In my most recent visit, I was pleasantly surprised that they had increased their selection of FRESH seed and nut mixes and Turkish delight style sweets. There are better and higher quality selections in the metro area, but not right here in this particular area. They have a good selection of non-perishable items that are not available in standard grocery stores, and prices on these items are reasonable. If you are buying produce here, it can be hit or miss. Just pay close attention before purchasing to make sure you aren't disappointed by spoiled items when you get home. read more

The prices are usually very reasonable but the best thing about Ishtar Market is the fresh baked items that are consistently coming out of the oven all day long, and the prices once again are very reasonable. I went to this market before the Dubai chocolate craze, and I bought a Dubai chocolate bar not even knowing what it was. I paid three or four bucks for it. I loved it, then I went back a few months later and the same kind of product was tripled or quadruple in price. I described to the store clerk the bar I had bought before, and she pointed me to a similar bar. There was no price on it -- but it rang up as $20. I was a bit miffed but didn't worry about that, but I def got the vibe from her that she was all about the $$$. I also asked for saffron, and she pointed me toward a tiny overpriced jar. It said it was yellow food coloring. She insisted to me it was saffron, though. The ingredients? Yellow food coloring and sodium chloride (salt). Buyer beware!! read more

I used to love this place but don't live in the area anymore, went there to get one of the sale items in the ad they market on Facebook and of course I called prior to driving 45mins to get it and the lady said yes just ask at the register, when I arrived I asked and she was busy but claimed more than once she has them in the back, so I waited looking at all the rotten fruit rotting more as no one buys it for her to run back and fourth making me wait just to come back out and say the boss said no more, umm what?! Small little market in this strip mall. They have dried lentils, an olive bar to pack and go, by the pound. They have small sweet limes, look small like limes but are yellow, like the lemons. We are told they are sweet enough to eat like an orange. They have a decent size produce section. We bought some Kubba house tabouli, a local spot, not made in house. Found some yellow American cheese that looked a bit moldy in spots in the fridge. A fresh bread section and counter. I image it's filled with lots of bread options during the core of the day rush. I like the selection of produce and Middle Eastern goodies here (they even sell Iraqi loofa, so it definitely taps into my nostalgia). The prices are very competitive, and they have good Iraqi bread (sammoon hajari). Halaw 3eni! :) My one problem is that the staff is not very attentive. As some other reviewers have pointed out, most of the staff seem to simply not care. There are a few that are nice and pleasant, but that is the exception. For example, a customer and I stood in front of the bakery to order bread but nobody would help us. One of the workers even walked up to us, picked up a kettle of tea, and walked back and simply motioned for us to wait. After almost ten minutes someone came and told us they no longer have freshly baked bread because it was late in the day (4pm). I don't want this to be a deterrent from your experience of getting good food. Just make sure you have realistic expectations. read more

Watch out for bad meat "Fresh" meat we bought there was spoiled two days later when my wife was ready to cook it. The meat was kept in the fridge, of course. The manager didn't apologize, he even refused to exchange or refund it claiming it had to be used the next day (makes me wonder just what kind of meat do they sell if it's unsafe to keep it in the refrigerator for any longer than one day ?) I 'found' Ishtar about six months ago and fell in love. The fresh baked bread is great and cheap - 5 for $1.50. And the produce prices are very low. Example: Large eggplant ranges from $ .88 to $1.25 EACH not per pound. SPICES.. a large selection of spices and very low prices. I have found the staff to be helpful. Since finding Ishtar, I have shopped several similar markets and found that none have the selection or price. read more

Usually shop from this place to purchase nuts and other vegetables that I cannot find in other grocery stores. I recently went to purchase mixed nuts for Easter but was disappointed with the result. In the past I would purchase $60 or more of the mixed nuts and was always happy with the product. However, this time around they had changed the mixed nuts by lessening the variety and making it around 75% almonds. To add insult to this, they kept the display of the old mixed nuts that they used to carry so when pouring into the bag one would think they're getting what they're used to purchasing. That's not the case! Be very careful when shopping here and thoroughly inspect everything before purchasing. read more

Although I didn't see any organic produce, they have very fair prices on their goods. Some outstanding (Canadian cuke for $.45!!! ) Best things: lots of very reasonable spices. FRESH hot bread...1 is a cheese pita that is outstanding and the other is this very airy little loaf of bread (samoon) - way better than a baguette. And, they have these really natural candies that seem healthy...like pomegranate raisin dipped in nuts. It was very good!! In many ways this is a userfriendly and lovely market. They are small... but have a lot of really good products, canned goods, dried fruits, a small frozen section, also olives and arabic candies and bulk nuts and seeds. Their produce is improving, there are some real finds, in quality and price... other fruit and veg can be tasteless or overripe, so pick carefully. Their meat department, the butcher is good, the meat comes in frozen and is thawed and cut well. Sometimes there is a poor date, so check carefully. They carry an excellent line of spices. The bakery is really good... prices amazing, quality of the bread excellent, flavor and texture. The one caveat we had... they do not respond well if there is a problem with one of their products. We bought some turkish delight which had sunflower petals on it... it turned out, there were also wood splinters which had to be pulled painfully out of our gums. We tried to return it, and made clear our concern was safety for other customers. They reluctantly gave us a refund, after repeated discussion with various staff.... but we saw that they continue to sell the same unsafe product. So lots of yummy stuff but buyer beware. read more

Although some of the items reasonably priced, like cheese and tomato's but mostly expensive for second class products. Their prices as high as Kroger except Kroger has nice costly overhead which Ishtar can not compete with. The other thing is that you can't find everything you need at Ishtar so you have to make another trip to Kroger or Meijer. read more

Great little grocery store that has AMAZING Iraqi bread you get piping hot, fresh from the oven. And the bread is cheap-- $1.25 for 5 large pieces. It's kinda like a pita/flat bread, in a diamond shape. My 5 year old asks to go there for the bread. read more

I work nearby and have been shopping here for the past five years. Good selection of fresh produce, bulk and canned foods. They carry Victor yogurt which has a layer of real cream on the top, does not have gums or pectin to fake thicken the yogurt , (yogurt jello). I have been going there 3+ years and have in the past recommended friends to go for specific items. Their produce is inferior on occasion and does not last more than a day or two at the most. Recently I purchased a bad melon and came back for a refund. Even though I am a regular customer who averages around $30 + visit, I was given a argument and told by the manager that how can I expect them to be responsible for the bad watermelon if they can't see inside of it! This went on for awhile with other excuses and I showed him a picture of the rotten melon sitting in the refuse bin. Eventually I was given another melon, not a refund. I can't wait to see if it's ok. So - it seems that they do not stand behind their products, they don't care about customer retention, and your repeated business means Zero to them. I will still go there for speciality items but will double my efforts to go elsewhere unless what I want is only available there. As for more recommendations to friends - that ends now. read more
