One of the rare meals you have where you have to profusely apologize to your dining companion for picking this place. It was awful. The staff were very nice (if inexperienced) and they re-did the space from the (equally bad) Du's Donuts in a lovely way, but there are a few red flags I ignored. 1. we were the only people dining here at 8 pm on a Thursday. 2. they didn't have one of their very few specialty cocktails, just didn't even have the base liquor, sitting behind the bar. 3. they were blaring expletive-laden rap music at thunderous volumes as if in warning. 4. most of the staff was just gathered at the bar drinking shots as if on a sinking ship. 5. the martinis were green-hued (but palatable). Here's where it went wrong. The food was bad. Literally every single thing was bad. I don't even know where to start except we ordered 2 appetizers and 2 entrees. After a *very* long pause here's what arrived: 1 appetizer, 1 entree (pause) 2nd appetizer, 2nd entree. All at once, simultaneously... so the table became overcrowded and food splattered all over my clothes. We spent two silent whole minutes just staring at the table, baffled. The mediocre soulless half chicken was just cruel because Le Crocodile is literally right across the street, it's LC's signature dish, and it immediately made me depressed I wasn't there. The pork sausage rolls tasted like someone ran out and stole toppings from a nearby pizzeria and then rolled them in so much flaky dough anyone would automatically get nauseous after a single bite. The fish and chips were perhaps the most confusing. The fish is in this sort of...hardened shell?...and...I don't even know what else to say. The only edible thing really was the whipped feta, which came with lazily toasted slices of sourdough that tasted like supermarket bread. It was probably only good by comparison to everything else. I didn't understand why there was *so much* asparagus everywhere, on everything... The service (again, very nice, so I feel bad) is inexperienced only because they didn't know when to clear plates or empty glasses, didn't know when to bring the check, and when we asked for recommendations, only knew to recommend the most expensive dishes. There was so much repetition (and yet more under-cooked asparagus! breadiness!) that any server who has worked in a restaurant longer than 45 minutes would immediately note to a diner. The sauces that came with the f&c and the rolls were all creamy, no variation, no acidity. Holy moly. The absolute nerve of charging $26 for entrees, I've encountered less grease at my old summer camp cafeterias. There is actually, comically, a BIOGRAPHY of the chef behind this enterprise on the back of the menu, like a Playbill or the back flap of a novel. He went to the CIA (not the intelligence agency, as you might guess after paying the bill), he worked for DIG (red flag #6), but I cannot fathom a human being would want to attach his face to this establishment. It's not a real restaurant. It's a scam, and it's a shame. read more

Amazing service, vibe, drinks, and food. Service is great, these guys are pros. Servers are highly trained, cool and can read their guests well. You'll get looked after well. Vibe is high energy but relaxed, fun and engaging. Again it's cool, but it's not pretentious which is basically impossible to find in the neighborhood. Drinks are amazing - I've had at least 50 different espresso martini's and these are by far the best. The key is fresh, high-quality ingredients and most important with an espresso martini, real, freshly ground coffee. Their sister restaurant Hole in the Wall has their own coffee brand which they use and you can taste it from the first sip. From memory (albeit hazy) the prices are very reasonable, although I'd happily pay more. Food is amazing and it shows that their chef has a Michilen Star background - really simple stuff, but executed at an elite level. Ingredients are fresh, high quality and the food is individually prepped and comes out quick. Overall, this should feature heavily on your pre and post evening routine, or for that hangover breakfast or brunch. read more

A little hiccup during check-in but overall a good experience! The weather was really nice when we visited and I loved that all the windows were open so we can feel the breeze coming in even though we sat inside. The eggs on the salmon benedict were cooked perfectly with runny yolks and my partner also enjoyed his scrambled eggs. Their coffee was great too! This is a very beautiful and elegant Australian restaurant, perfect for dates or hangouts. The personnel is very friendly. The food there is very good. French fries were very crispy . To be fair, I ordered pickup, and the sandwich I ordered probably would have been better to eat in the restaurant. But the sandwich was very heavily buttered/oiled, so it was really greasy. It really disappoints me to say how this restaurant was a beautiful disaster. I had a little while before my friend was set to meet me to go watch an outdoor movie and I decided to come here after getting turned away by Kokomo because of not having a reservation. First thing I wanna say is that the service was great. Servers, bartenders, hostess all were attentive and kind. However, the restaurant has some sort of fly/mosquito infestation by the bar. The bartender agreed with me when I pointed out the flys/mosquitoes were killing me. I didn't want table seating because again I was just staying to grab a quick bite and drink. Then let's move on to the most horrible issue. I have never gotten sick from eating out in my 41 years of life. I ordered the steamed clams and a Rośe. Rośe was crisp, cold and refreshing. I was happy it was happy hour because $16 for a not even 3 quarter filled glass was absurd. However, the clams did taste funny like fishy, I couldn't figure out if it was the claims or the sauce so I continued to eat it. I thought maybe the sauce was a little weird but none the less, the sourdough bread was amazing and I worked my way thru the clams. the sauce was also A bit spicy which I dnt remember if the menu said that was how it came. Once I finished, paid and started on my walk back to the venue I started to very nauseous and had a headache. The next day my entire stomach was on fire and I couldn't stop using the restroom. Now it is the next evening and I am still very much not feeling well. Maybe this is a dish they dnt serve too often and it was old but I'm truly disappointed and am upset I'm still not feeling well. I stopped by Isla & Co. for some lunch on a sunny Thursday afternoon and it did not disappoint! They have a vibey patio that catches some killer sunlight during the daytime, there's light background music playing AND there's WiFi so I was able to get work done:)! The servers were lovely and very accommodating! Don't even get me started on the food....I had the Spicy Shrimp Vodka Rigatoni and a Half Dozen Oysters with bloody mary mignonette...which is to die for! My daughter recommended this place and I of course had to try it when I visited them. Friendly waiters and nice place to go for brunch. The brioche French toast was good although I would prefer less of the fruit toppings as it overpowered the French toast. I arrived at around 12.15pm as the lunch crowd was coming in and they took a really long time with my order. The waiter was very apologetic and did the best she could under the circumstances. I really liked this spot. Got the brussel sprouts, the butter lettuce salad and the burger. The Brussels were good but a little too saucy. Salad was delicious but I gave this 5 stars because the burger was one of the most juicy and delicious burgers I've ever had in my life. I was already getting full when it came but still managed to eat it. Because you can't let something that good go to waste. You just can't!! And I don't love ketchup but it comes on it and it was still incredible. Just get it as is. Medium rare of course. You notice it as soon as you approach, floor to ceiling windows that let in maximum sunlight and add openness to the interior. I ordered the fish and chips, angus burger, halloumi and whipped feta. Astounding!! Everything was super fresh and light. You can eat everything they make and rest assured it'll all make the mark. This place is a vibe! Came here with two of my friends and we ordered the octopus, shrimp pasta, sausage, fries and aperol spritz. Everything was bussin bussin!!! Out of everything that we ordered, my favorite was octopus. It was so tender and cuts like butter. The service was great - they came around to check on us for water/drinks and tended us very well. Paying for the bill was very easy - just by using tap. And we were able to three way the bill no problem. Def a place I will recommend to friends and come back again! :) read more

Isla is located at the bottom of the William Vale Hotel and there isn't an obvious entrance - it almost appears to be a hotel lobby coffee shop with all of its doors open. I feel like this does a disservice to the restaurant because it doesn't draw people in or create crowds/lines like similar places in the neighborhood (which I also selfishly hope they don't change). Once you go inside, all of the open doors are very much appreciated as you get a garden oasis experience with tons of greenery inside and out. We ordered a Bloody Mary and mimosa to start and both were good, not great and it took awhile to get them. For food, we ordered the sausage rolls as an appetizer and they were outstanding. For mains, I got the smoked salmon eggs Benedict which was excellent and unique as it's served or sourdough toast instead of an English muffin. The eggs were also perfect poached and there was just the right amount of hollandaise sauce. My husband got the breakfast sandwich which was also great and the French fries it came with were unreal - thin, crispy, and salty. To finish off the meal, we decided to try their espresso martini which was arguably one of the best we have had in Williamsburg. We'll definitely come back and try some of their other menu items (particularly anything that comes with fries). read more

2 stars for the service. Would be 1 but their drinks are pretty good. Here's my story: Absent host, I stood around figuring out if we needed to sit ourselves or be seated. We got sat, given a menu, and waited about 15 min for any follow up. I walked up to the bar to ask if we order at the bar, to which the female bartender without even looking at my direction just firmly and rudely says "no". Keep in mind that it was around 2 PM on a Sunday and wasn't necessarily busy with a line out of the door. I get being backed up with orders but don't put your frustrations out because of an innocent question. Our server comes by to take our drinks. We wait another 15-20 min for our drinks to even come out. Our server never even came back to check in or let us know she was even still our server. A gentlemen from the bar came and handed us our drinks. A couple sips in I spill my drink on accident. Completely my fault and I'll own it. Was there assistance to clean it? No. As you can tell with the common theme of absence, I had to flag her down. We received more help from the customers sitting next us handing us extra napkins. Server comes by and offers to throw the dirty napkins and says "I'll get another one for you" (referring to the spilled drink). At this point it was just bad vibes and we had a birthday to get to so figured we'd stop after the one drink each. Then comes the time for the bill. We couldn't flag down our server because she was at the other side of the restaurant bussing a table for 8 minutes. We asked another employee for the bill. I hand her my card, she turns the device, and I see I got charged for a second drink. I'm sitting their questioned because I had taken literally two sips before the accident. Now, I get if they don't waive it because it was my fault. But the server had said "I'll get another one for you", something I took as "we'll get you another one on the house". If she would have said we're gonna have to charge you, I honestly would've just passed on getting the second one. There was no mention, just tacked onto the bill. At this point, the card was run, and the employee helping us check out (not the original server) didn't know how to issue refunds. Weird? So she goes and talks to her manager and he says that I'll have to wait ten minutes for it. Once more, it wasn't backed up. There were employees standing around, tables open, and really not chaotic. Ironically, our original server was sitting at the bar eating (probably on her lunch which I won't blame). Just really strange how every person working there who has one of those toast devices to run cards doesn't know how to issue refunds? We ended up leaving because we were running late and just not given any attention from the moment we stepped foot into the restaurant. I'm 100% understanding of the busy aspect at restaurants. But it wasn't. I'm 100% understanding of spilling the drink on my own accord. But was I informed of the double charge? No. Was I given any assistance? No. Just really seemed like untrained servers. It's common to just let your table know "hey, (so and so) will be taking your orders now". Or maybe when you hear a loud glass drop you turn your head and see if the help is needed. Or just peak at the table you're "serving" and see if their glass is empty and maybe 'serve' them. I can only imagine a dinner rush, when tables are actually full, how worse this experience could've been. read more

Horrible Experience :( I brought my friend (who was visiting from Europe) to Isla Williamsburg about two weeks ago. As usual, the place was empty. We were there for perhaps 3 to 3.5 hours, drinking cocktails & catching up. When I went to the bathroom my friend was settling the bill. As we packed up to leave the barman very aggressively approached us and asked my friend why she only left a 10% tip. He said it was customary to leave at least 20% and that her tip was 'weak'. He put the card machine down in front of her indicting for her to leave an additional tip. It was horrible and she was naturally very upset. She has no experience with tipping as she's not from here. We were so shocked that we just left. For what its worth, the service was awful. We had maybe 6 drinks during the time we were there and for about 4 of them we had to get up from our table, go inside and order them ourselves. Its a shame because I live two blocks from Isla, but sadly will never be back read more

I was staying at the William Vale hotel next door for a few days on business and happened upon Isla & Co because I noticed their cute garden patio. What a delicious dinner my friend and I had, one of the best meals I've had in Brooklyn. My friend and I default to being vegan when we can, but we'll eat fish if no other protein is available. We had so much to choose from! We both had Isla's Power Bowl (and took home enough for dinner the next night) and split the hummus plate. Our waitress was sweet and helpful, recommending dishes and was super accommodating about my nut allergy and gluten intolerance. The bowls were fresh and delicious, the hummus super creamy and smooth but the best part was their light and fluffy gluten free bread! I wished I had to stay longer in Brooklyn, I would have eaten there every night. (P.S. parking seems easy, my friend scored a space right across the street!) read more

Absolutely LOVE this spot for brunch, lunch, dinner, cocktails.. all of it! I'll even just pop in for a quick coffee and sit in their cute pink chairs out front (Australians really know their coffee ). They have the BEST Espresso Martinis (I'm obsessed with their martini flight!) and the service is always great. The Basil Gimlet is another one of their cocktails worth noting and you must try the brussels sprouts and the green thai curry - sooooo yummy. Easily one of my favorite spots in Williamsburg. read more

Pretty room, nice people serving the food. We were the only two people dining at 7:30pm, yet four dishes (2 apps, 2 entrees) all arrived at the same time, about 20 minutes after we ordered. And if the food had been good, I could have forgiven that. But the only thing that was good was the whipped feta. The Pork Sausage roll was flavorless and greasy. Fish and chips was similarly greasy. A cod filet in a hard and slightly burnt tasting thick shell of breading and good lord, no salt anywhere. Fries were fine. Sauces for fish were not very good either. Just gross. My husband and I got breakfast here this morning and loved it! Our server was SO nice. She was very attentive as well. The food and drinks were delicious and it was reasonably priced for breakfast/brunch. Our server seemed to be the only one working, I felt so bad for her having to handle it all, but she was killing it.
