From our very first tour with Ms. Brenda, we knew this school checked all the boxes we were looking for. She was reading words at just 3 years old, and the nurturing, structured environment helped her grow in so many ways. Any concerns we had during preschool were addressed promptly, and we always felt confident she was in great hands. However, our experience changed significantly once she transitioned into kindergarten. While the curriculum remains strong and academically focused, the environment felt much more rigid and less joyful. It is very one size fits all. We absolutely value education, but we also want our child to enjoy being a kid--through fun, creativity, and play. Another challenge has been the limited communication. Most interaction is restricted to quick exchanges at drop-off or pick-up, and calls are typically returned when the staff is available. There's little feedback unless you personally call and ask, so it's hard to know how your child is progressing until report cards are sent out. At times, important day-to-day situations involving our daughter weren't communicated to us. Lastly, we didn't always feel the school environment, particularly the front office, was the most welcoming. On a few occasions, I had to initiate conversations after being overlooked which left us feeling more like a number than part of a school community. Overall, the preschool experience was outstanding and gave our daughter a strong academic and social foundation. We're incredibly thankful for that time. Unfortunately, the transition into kindergarten didn't live up to the same standard. I hope this feedback helps other families make a choice that aligns with what they're looking for.

SVHS is an online high school. It is fully accredited and…read moreNCAA & UC (a-g) approved. Online courses are $125 each (as of August 2022). My 8th grade son is currently taking a Geometry Course through SVHS. Since his current public school does not offer geometry to middle school students it was recommended that we look into an online program. After doing quite a bit of research we came across the following programs that were repeatedly mentioned online (I listed the price per course or per semester) * SVHS ($125) * BYU independent study ($195) * Excel High ($299) * Apex ($380) * EPIC ($399) Based on what other parents posted online it seems like the experience is pretty much the same all across-the-board: * Self paced. There is a recommended schedule for completing each lesson and doing all the assignments but this is entirely up to the student. I believe there's a one-year limit to finish the course. * Learning material consists of videos, written lesson plans/pdfs. Most of the material is not original material created by the school, but rather repurposed material that exists on youtube * Exams consist of multiple-choice quizzes (10 questions each) that give you instant results, unit tests (25 questions each) that give you instant results, and a final exam. * Homework - every "unit" (aka chapter) has an assignment that you must submit which is graded by a real human. They say that it takes 2 to 3 days for someone to grade your work, but our experience has been longer. The amount of homework is significantly less than what you get in a traditional school. They do encourage you to take the quizzes as many times as you like to ensure that you are learning the material. While some of the programs above offer a human tutor that will either respond to your email questions or meet with you over zoom, my impression is that the tutors are hit or miss in terms of quality. Personally I would not choose a program (SVHS or any of the others above) expecting to have a great tutor. In my opinion... SVHS is for: * Self-disciplined and self-motivated students. Or a student with a parent who has the time to ensure that your student is staying on top of things. * Students who learn well asynchronously. Remember, none of the classes are live. Your student will review the material on their own time. * Students who do not have access to a particular course offered at their current school. In our case, geometry is not offered to eighth graders but my son really enjoys math and wanted to challenge himself * Students who need to take an accredited UC A-G approved course that will count towards high school and maybe even college. SVHS is NOT for: * Students who need live teaching and having more interaction with teachers, tutors, and other students. * Students who need structure and who need to be held accountable to attend and complete assignments * Students who need tutoring or hands-on support outside of the classroom * Students who are looking for an amazing learning experience. The material, from our experience, is pretty basic. It feels more like you are doing the minimum to "check the box" rather than to have an enriching learning experience Overall we are pleased because it has met our expectations. But our expectations (getting access to a course that is not offered elsewhere, getting UC A-G credit, flexibility/convenience) might differ from others.

This situation of bullying is an ongoing situation && nothing seems to be resolving within the school principals, counselor, security, etc I'm a very concerned parent of a child that is being continued to being bully on your school campus With no follow ups or return of phone call/emails Investigations && follow ups are important && for days to pass with no communication is very disturbing My daughter has been attacked from behind 3 times in less than 2 months of school being in session && it seems the staff at Dessert Oasis HS has no control over their students Signing a no contact contract obviously means nothing to these kids && policies need to be taken differently It is ridiculous on how you talk to different principals && staff of the HS && they all have different ways of trying to solve or say to this situation I don't understand why? When a parent is dropping their child off to school for education && is getting texts && calls from their child that she wants to be picked up because she is being attacked, I feel the school apparently is unsafe && not doing their duty to have children in their hands What do you have to say? Bullying is very serious && it seems your school thinks otherwise!! The principal is amazing! Communication is very good! Something we didn't have consistent at his elementary school. The parking, drop off and pick up traffic is always smooth. They have a flow that everyone is supposed to follow. I do hate the selfish parents that sit in their cars waiting for their kids while blocking the parked cars. Grrrr! I think the school staff should work on getting those to leave. I especially LOVE that they schedule a day for us to pick up their school schedules prior to first day of school. That day not only gives us an opportunity to get classes ahead of time, but getting lockers and combo too, we get to check their classrooms and have a game plan of where to go so that the kids aren't late and lost looking for their classrooms and lockers on the first day of school. A nice sneak peak for us parents too =) On that day, we have the opportunity to pay for everything upfront such as the PE uniforms, Elective class fees like my son's orchestra fees and concert uniform fees, Tarkanian Merchandise, etc any questions at all, the Counselors have their own table and are available to answer any concerns. This is held in both their cafeteria and Gym. I really love this! It's less stress and less hectic on the first day/week is school for the kids! I have a lot of nieces and nephews who go to other middle schools and none of them do this! They tell me how crazy it is with payments of class fees etc on first week and some take weeks before they even get their PE uniforms and lockers A few weeks in the school year, they schedule another event which is the official meet and greet/open house for parents to meet each class/teachers, they go over class expectations, grading scales, contact Information, answer any questions for parents, clarify what needs to be clarified, etc. an announcer gives each class about 10-15 mins and it's like a musical chair game and we move to the next classroom. I absolutely LOVE this idea!! A VERY organized school overall! The principal/ assistant principal is in the courtyard available for any questions and to just greet the parents, direct foot traffic. They continue to amaze me! (Mr Reece Oswald & Mr Musemici) My son has no issues with his teachers and staff, just the student's culture which isn't something anyone can control I think. As most middle school aged kid, he said his first year, all everyone talked about is sex, dating, swearing etc. that is unfortunately not avoidable in middle school. He said in his 3 years so far (2-3 months in 8th grade right now) he has only seen 2 fights. But it was broken up fairly quickly by the staff, 2 girls fighting in the cafeteria and 2 young new 6th graders boys. So far no bullies that I know of. I ask my son from time to time. He seems fairly happy at this school. Great friends, great food (I don't pack him food, he prefers Catherine cafeteria food believe it or not lol) The front office admin team is nice and pleasant. =) They have kids in each hallways that monitor and direct. I'm not sure what they're called but it's pretty awesome. The school used to sit on the desert by itself but since my son's first year there, they've built houses all around it now. So contruction was a nightmare. It's almost done now though. (Nov 2019) so all the houses and streets surrounding it is brand spanking new. American west homes. (Those are nice homes!!) very clean and quiet neighborhood. Safe when there are no creepers following kids around. There was 1 incident where a white truck followed a kid walking to school, it was on the news but the kid made it to school safely and the parents were notified immediately and was also in the local news. Oh and they have themed school dances every year for all grades which is pretty awesome to have! The kids enjoy it!! The kids seems to fear the staff (lol) which is a really great sign the staff is doing their jobs of discipline and establishing authority and as a parent, I am all for that!! My son is in orchestra and misses Mrs. Gray. She unfortunately moved out of state but he says his current teacher Mr McGlasson is actually pretty awesome too. It is also currently a 5-star rated school!! Pretty excited about that! I will continue to add more to this review if needed by end of school year but it has been so far so good. No complaints in 3 years. =)
