Where to begin.... The cashier was super friendly and explained the different food to me. The first time eating here I had the Kalua Pig with rice & macaroni salad. I was definitely impressed. Island Grinds is a non-profit that serves as an outlet for at risk youth to learn how to work and be productive members of the community. The location is a little obscure and out of the way, but it is worth the trip. The atmosphere is plain, but the prices are fair. The art work is really great. I have had the katsu chicken and the pupu chicken. They are both very good. The food is clean and tastes good. Go give this place a try. read more

I think I have hit all the island food establishments in SG, with the exception of the "poke" bowl. Island Grinds is walk up to the counter. Order, pay, and take your number and wait to be called. As a "newbie" I was impressed with the large clientele of Polynesians ( a great endorsement) and repeat diners that knew exactly what to order. I must say I was late arriving as I was looking on the wrong side of Sunset. This storefront is small. I still ended up driving through parking lot twice. Look for the Albertson's Grocery Store. Island Grinds is next to Little Cesear's and a clothing store. My companions had ordered and were waiting to be called. This was 12:30 p.m. I ended up waiting in line. By 1 p.m. the lunch crowd had passed. Friday was fish day and the fried fish was flying out the door. There are $5 lunch specials served with mac salad & rice. I had to be different so I tried the short ribs and a second meat of pupu chicken..with 2 scoops of rice plus mac salad. This is not for anyone on a diet, but a great cheat day lunch. Lots of sauces to accompany the entree (soy, bbq), plus their idea of hot sauce is sriracha (spelling?). Fountain beverages and cans. I want to cut Island Grinds some slack and offer them kudos for hiring young people giving them training and experience for future work in the food industry. Bear this in mind if you find a mistake in your order, slowness in service, or something not up to snuff. They are in training, and will get better. Be patient, and say "thank you". It is just a meal and they want to please. A smile and a "well done" will go a long way towards making someone's day. So, remember it is not fine fining, but good, wholesome comfort food. Staying in St George while visiting Zion we fell upon this restaurant. I was a little concerned walking in as the table were not cleaned off and the place looked a little dirty, but we stayed and ordered the $5 Pupu chicken dinner that comes with rice and mac salad. Not sure how this place has 4 stars. I will preface by saying I give so much benefit of the doubt to restaurants operating during the re-opening phases. It's truly a difficult thing to keep open and break even but our visit today was horrendous. We placed an order for four meals and after placing the order they told us they didn't have Kalua pork they didn't have brown rice. Then after we had paid they said OK will be 15 to 20 minutes but there was no one else in the restaurant we would've gone somewhere else had we known we would have to wait that long. They do not have the dining room open for us to wait so we wait in the car. 1 Star for really good brown rice and a good portion of Kailua Pork. I like patronizing family businesses and can overlook minor things because the kids are helping the business grow firsthand, however my experience today was one thing after another. We ordered a 2 meat plate of Kailua pork and pork short ribs, and another with Kailua pork and their famous Pupu Chicken. Both came with 2 scoops of rice (we chose brown) and a same size scoop of Macsalad. When the order was ready the orders came with a small 2oz. cup of Teriyaki sauce, which is barely enough for two scoops of rice, but when we tried the nice portion of Kailua pork we found if almost tasteless, and more teriyaki was a must. Additional cup of teriyaki is $.25 which when you spend $22 on double meat plates is taking advantage of a customer. We would not have been a need for additional sauce if it had been more flavorful. When I went back to buy the sauce the girl asked if I wanted change back from a $5 for a 25 cent cup of sauce and seemed put off when I said "of course'. Then counted back my change a dollar short and I had to get her to reopen the till for the additional dollar. Meanwhile, back at the table, we found the short ribs to be predominantly fat and bone, very little meat and clearly 4 thin slices wit a cross.section of 2 ribs was clearly not worth the effort or money. Picture attached of barely edible gristly, tough with almost no meat. The Pupu chicken was quite tasty, no bones but very grease soaked. Mac salad was pretty authentic with Mac and Mayo and not a lot of flavor and that's OK. The place itself feels dreary and run down with slow service especially for a drink refill ( back behind counter) and not much attention to detail or genuine customer service. This review is mostly one of honest feedback to the owners of things they might like to consider to make their business better. And really, $25 for sauce. But on a positive note if you are looking for great brown rice, they got it. read more

Easily the best Hawaiian food restaurant in St. George. Family owned and operated. Great service and great tasting food. You can get classics such as Teriyaki chicken and chicken katsu with Mac salad and rice. Their teriyaki sauce is fantastic on both their chicken and rice. Always get extra! Their world famous pupu chicken is really good too. It's a must try if you've never had it. Other meats include Kalua pork and lemon pepper chicken. The have a lunch special which includes a select meat, rice and mac salad. They also have two and three meat plate options for the hungrier folks. Made a long trek from Michigan for this...and to vacation at the national parks. So glad I stopped by. Thank you yelp reviewers for the recommendation. Family owned business that helps a non-profit. The family was great. It was about closing time, no one was in there, and they still served me though the door had been locked. Had a great conversation with my guy Vai - future high school star lineman. I appreciated the company and the friendliness of my dude...really took my dining experience to another level rather than eating alone. Give that guy a raise mom and dad. I got a mini of the pupu chicken. Nothing poopoo about it. Delicious. The sauce was great. Loved the macaroni salad too, which is usually not good at other places. I ordered with door dash. Well on May 10th, 2019 , that's twice I ordered but different times and I also got sick. They don't care about there Customers because they hung up on me on the phone.
