The room is spacious and would be great with some investment in new furniture, some needed updates, and a very deep clean. It has a great location with a lovely view of the lake. But... It was unclear where the office was located. There wasn't an office sign. Clutter stacked around the doors including an old beat up piano - maybe a remodel project is going on? We watched and killed flying insects coming into the room from a crack under the door. We left the spider that was there to hopefully catch the ones we missed. Mattresses were low grade and old. The beds and pillows were sprayed with some kind of strong chemical scent/deodorizer - the entire room smelled what we guessed was Odo-ban. my daughter with Asthma was unable to sleep in the bed and had to sleep on the futon under our jackets. There was no extra bedding for the futon. Bedroom furniture was very old particle board that was water warped, chipped, and abraded on the edges. Stove was filthy - the drip pans were rusted and full of burned on food. Appeared like they hadn't been cleaned or replaced in years. The refrigerator was old and the racks inside were rusted. The dishes were stored under the sink beneath the drain trap, which feels very unhygenic. $15 fee if you left any dirty dishes. We were really looking forward to spending the day enjoying the beautiful view but instead we are leaving as quickly as we can. We are looking forward to getting to our next hotel to shower and finally rest comfortably.

To properly frame this review I think it has to be made clear what this place is and what it is not. If you're looking for the Ritz Carleton experience - this is not your place. It is a proper old school fishing lodge and it is outstanding at being just that. The cabins are rustic, full of character and solid. Very comfy. The stay includes breakfast, a bag lunch and dinner. I was ready for mediocrity but instead had a great series of meals. A beautiful end cut prime rib one night, succulent fresh salmon and roast turkey the next. So good that locals would go there for dinner even if not staying at the ranch. Delicious breakfasts daily were another bonus. Unexpectedly yummy. We really enjoyed Chef Alonzo and his team. Easy 5 stars. My buddy was catching fish left and right - catch and release. He was very happy. Being an shutterbug if we ever go back I'll look for a nice moonless night because I bet the night photography there would be epic. Recommended.

The staff at the inn are also really sweet and friendly - they did help direct me to the geyser (which is behind the place).

I fully understand that most national park hotels don't have tvs or other amenities. This hotel also does not have WiFi, fridges in the rooms, easy access to a water fill station etc. The main reason for the 1 star is that we were in Yellowstone in July when it was over 80 degrees everyday. We stayed in 2w corridor facing the parking lot, the room had zero ventilation so even with the windows wide open and the fan running continuously at night, the room never cooled down. We were all overheating and miserable at night. I noticed other corridors seemed cooler so this may be different from wing to wing. Again the hotel itself is beautiful, old and historic. Definitely worth visiting if coming to see old faithful.

Its four rustic log cabins were built in the 1940s in a forest of pine trees right off a central avenue in West Yellowstone and almost walking distance to the West Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. They don't take online reservations here, rely mostly on word of mouth to fill the cabins from May to October, and take great pride in providing incredible personal service from the family that has owned Whispering Pines Motel for decades. There is much to love here -- inviting front porches, the charming and woodsy decor, the feeling of being in a special place untouched by time. Each cabin has its own unique features from the largest cabin with beamed ceilings and views into the woods that sleeps five to the smallest unit for two that wraps you in a warm coziness that's hard to leave. We stayed in the 2 bedroom, 1 bath "Creekside" cottage and I believe it was just $220/night! The super 8 motel down the street charges $250/room. There is a front and back porch. Very dated, no a/c, wifi not too great, small rotating fan to get air flow, today was not my hair wash day because I don't want to spend any extra time here and we can hear full conversations and bathroom visits of the neighbors next door. We paid $400 for this "cabin" with 2 maybe queen beds and I think I would have rather slept in our rental car. You're essentially trapped here at a national park. First and last. My husband feels like we got catfished. There is also no tv, not a big deal but I had no idea. Also, no good food here. Even bigger doozie to being trapped. Ouch. This was a one and done for us.
