I love the gourmet popcorn from this place. I used to buy their popcorn at Eden In Love. This was my first time at this location. I asked for the Eden In Love flavor which consists of their caramel, cheddar and furikaki popcorn. I was told that that combo was exclusive to that business. I could get it if I added butter or mochi crunch. I went with the mochi crunch. I bought their special 3XL bags for $48. It was $6 more since I added the mochi crunch to the three bags. The bags were pretty big and took me a few days to consume. Their popcorn is really good, but the caramel was too sweet for me. My fave is the furikaki flavor. Next time, I'll just get the Kauai mix, which has furikaki and cheese. I'll probably add on the mochi crunch also. I like mochi crunch in my popcorn. However, my cup had some caramel popcorn in it - so, it was actually Big Island Mix! Haha! I decided to get some Holiday Cups for the staffing office at my workplace. The clerks and supervisors take a lot of abuse - especially when employees don't get overtime because it's not their turn or when employees have to float to another building. The list goes on and on... Anyway, I went to Island Popper to order the Holiday Cups. I didn't realize that it would take a while because it's made to order. I offered to pick up the order another day, but they'd rather have the order picked up on the same day. Okay... I can return in two hours. I gave them my car make, model, and color. When I returned after two hours, it didn't seem like my order was ready. I waited in my car and caught up with email on my phone. Gosh... I had no idea that this place is super busy! I kept seeing messages from my Five Stars app about all the specials that Island Popper was having so after checking out their Yelp and website, I decided to give it a try. Island Popper is a good sized shop specializing in different types of popcorn and mixes. I was a little lost at first when I entered but the lady working was super friendly and helpful. She explained the sizes and the mixes. They put out a display showing what are in each of their mixes. I decided to get the deal of four cups for $10. You can mix and match which flavors you want. I went with the tsunami, Maui mix, Big Island mix, and their weekly specials chocolate strawberry mix. The tsunami had furikake, bitter, and Mochi crunch. The Big Island mix had caramel, furikake, and butter. The Maui mix had caramel and cheese and the special was chocolate with dried strawberries. I was able to use my double deal. Checking in on Yelp gives you 10% off and my check in with Five Star gave me a free bag of popcorn, score! I really liked that they are pretty strict about Covid guidelines. One lady came in to ask for samples. They said she can get a sample but she would have to eat it outside. They also reminded her to pull up her mask. Also after you order, they bring it to your car so you're not waiting in the store for it. They have a good system. We tried one of the cups today, the tsunami, it was good. Schulz I remember the first time I was introduced to Chicago's Garrett cheddar and caramel gourmet popcorn was at a work conference in Las Vegas in the early '80s. Since then, I had signed up for Garrett's mailing list and would annually buy family-size tins to share with my family or co-workers during the Holidays. Their famous Garrett Mix (cheddar and caramel popcorn) or CaramelCrisp were popular choices, and it wasn't until December 2012 did I discover a storefront of Garrett popcorn in Las Vegas. With that discovery, whenever we'd go to Las Vegas for leisure, I'd squeeze in visits to the Miracle Mile Shops to get either Garrett Seasonal flavors or their classic Garrett Mix to bring home. Fast-forwarding to our recent trip to Las Vegas to start the celebration of my birth month, August, I meant to stop in at Garrett but didn't because we were distracted by other foodie treats, but my tastebuds yearned for that Garrett Mix. Thanks to fellow Yelp Hawai'i friends who wrote about their experiences with Island Popper's humble beginnings at our local farmer's markets featuring their food truck called "Poppy." Instead of searching the farmer's markets, I lucked out to find Island Popper's brick and mortar in Kalihi, which opened in late 2019, to satisfy my craving for the salty-but-sweet popcorn combination of cheddar and caramel. We found the Island Popper shop on Colburn Street in the block bordered by Kalihi and McNeill Streets. At least eight designated parking stalls for Island Popper in the shared parking lot fronts Island Popper and the other businesses in this strip mall. Proper face mask-wearing is required for entry into this business, and there are social distancing directional signs on the floor that direct you to their order counter or waiting areas. There were several customers ahead of us, so the wait gave us time to peruse their products in addition to their Maui Mix (cheddar and caramel popcorn). By the time it was our turn to order, we had decided to get their 3 LARGE bags of popcorn mixes special for $20. - Maui Mix: Caramel + Cheddar popcorn. WOW! This mix sure hit my taste buds, and as I ate Island Popper's version, I could swear it was exactly like the Chicago treat. I know now that I won't have to order the product online or go to Las Vegas to get this flavor combination anymore! - Big Island Mix: Caramel + Furikake + Butter popcorn. I thought the combination would be sort of weird. The combinations of either Caramel + Butter OR Furikake + Butter seemed to be obvious choices, but by putting all three flavors together...well, I was perplexed. To my surprise, when I tasted the Big Island Mix, I was instantly hooked! - Tsunami Mix: Butter + Furikake + Mochi Crunch popcorn. Locals can relate to this combination since it's a Hawaiian creation known as "Hurricane popcorn." The fusion of Japanese furikake (nori & sesame seed mix) + mochi crunch (arare or rice crackers) is combined with buttery popcorn. Island Popper's Tsunami Mix was a delicious blend of butter + dried seaweed, + crunchy fried rice crackers coated with soy sauce. My husband ate the whole bag in one sitting, so I know that he really enjoyed this flavor. My favorites are the Big Island Mix (butter, caramel, furikake) and the Kauai mix (cheese, furikake). Special flavors are featured - today we tried the pumpkin spice pecan caramel in a cup. So good. The flavor didn't overpower the popcorn. The cups are a perfect size for trying out the new flavors and sometimes they have a special with 4 cups to mix and match. And they have cute little packs that you can use for party favors. Everyone is so nice there and there's fun cut outs so you can take fun popcorn pics. So this place is dangerous. Like you will pig out on popcorn as a meal. The Kauai mix is my favorite! It's the cheddar flavored popcorn, with furikake butter popcorn and caramel corn. Sweet and salty is always best for those with the most seritonious palette! I appreciate how phone orders are quick for pick up. They also do curb side if you pre-pay! The first time I tried these it was a gift from holidays in 2020. Amazingly, they are so close to where I work so these are a great gift buy for sending gifts to your neighbors or relatives in the mainland. They keep the popcorn fresh in those tight circle -shaped containers and they use gloves while bagging your popcorn. The displays in front are not for sale so they make your cups or bags fresh! My love for this place keeps popping up. I first learned about the brand from the Eden In Love mix I would get whenever it was available. And finally I looked it up. Evidently, I've been driving right past this little shop for......well, forever. Now I've found it and I love it. I love the $10/4-pack of mixed cups for my boys (and me). I love the buy 3 at a discounted price for the L and XL bags. And I love that they have seasonal flavors and that I can preorder or curbside pick up! And really.....the flavors are spot on. Cheddar, caramel, furikake, butter, with or without kakimochi? What you like??? Try them all......I sure did. My fave is the Big Island mix or the Kauai mix, depending on what I'm wearing and if I can afford to risk orange stains from the cheddar (yes, I'm a grownup, and yes, I know what napkins are for.....don't judge me) I've done these orders for all kinds of occasions.
