As an expert of evaluation, I rate this fine breakfast/lunch restaurant a 4.5. The highlight of the experience was definitely the service. We were greeted nicely, got a nice big table outside, and got good recommendations on what to order. We even left a water bottle and to our surprise, our waiter ran after us from across the street to return it to us! I would have rated this place higher if it weren't for a few flaws. Number one, (small issue) they forgot a member of our tables drink, which he had to remind them he had ordered. And secondly the urinal in the bathroom was broken along with the sink, which made for a less than ideal restroom experience. Other than those minor problems, I would highly recommend this place, especially for a quick bite for breakfast or lunch. There is a handful of restaurants in the village of Eastsound and Steve and I tried a few on our last trip to Orcas Island but I think we reached an agreement that we enjoyed Island Skillet the best. We have to get up pretty early to make reservations with the ferry that takes us to the San Juan Islands. It's all a bit of a process but always worth it. So when we arrived and got off of the ferry it was breakfast time and most of the shops haven't even opened yet. It was nice strolling through the still sleeping village but it was extra nice that Island Skillet was open for breakfast! I got a fantastic Breakfast Burrito here which was very filling and satisfying. Best Breakfast Burrito I have ever had, I am 36 yrs old and have had a lot, actually 2 in the last 2 days +my life so maybe 100+ locations. Why was this so good? Eggs, hash browns, cheese, I added sausage, refried beans, and avocado. $8 We walked in at 10:30am, had coffee in 30 seconds, ordered food, boom there in 5 minutes, seriously 5 minutes. How I heard of this place: Again, our new friend and Visitor Center Welcomer, Michelle suggested Island Skillet after hearing of our plans to spend the weekend at the Deer Harbor Inn. The owners of Deer Harbor's Restaurant also run Island Skillet and offer an in-city breakfast experience unlike any other. We were ready to accept the challenge. Type of cuisine: A true, American, down-home menu including breakfast staples: Eggs Benedict, Buttermilk Pancakes, Huevos Rancheros, Breakfast Skillets and Omelettes. Ambiance: Country-style in theme, the Skillet welcomes patrons with a metal-work rooster and Pacific Island style covered passageway. With wide-set tables and lines of locals waiting to place their take-away orders, the Island Skillet is certainly the place to be on a Sunday morning. With one room to the left upon entry, bustling with diners, locals and marathon-runners finishing out their weekend getaways, we joined the masses for our true Island experience. A second, smaller room to the right boasts seating for those wishing for a quieter experience, as well as a wall of activities for tourists to enjoy during their stays. Despite the busy-ness inside, the air is calm and the space surprisingly quiet. No music with which conversations must compete, friends meet, greet and diners partake of their Sunday morning brunch rituals. But thanks to yelp I found this place. Everything on the menu was under $10 and huge portions. Perfect place for the budget-friendly person like me. Everything we ordered was super delicious. My mom and I both had the chefs omelet, bacon and cream cheese in an omelet. Oh my gosh heaven! All the wait-staff was super friendly and nice. I appreciate the simple homey atmosphere as well. I'm not big on fancy. I love that they had tables to eat at that looked just like your kitchen table at home. I think the building use to be someone's house. A serviceable breakfast, especially when one arrives to Eastsound on a Tuesday. It turns out that Tuesdays are dining slim pickings with several of the most popular foodie haunts - Brown Bear Baking, New Leaf Cafe, Rose's - closed for business. We scratched our heads and wandered around town until we saw the "open" sign at Island Skillet. I had an omelet with mushrooms, swiss, and spinach while my husband had an omelet with chorizo and peppers. Both were a little on the bland side and served with standard hash browns that were less crispy than I prefer. In retrospect, I should have ordered the home fries that I spied at a neighbor's table. Highly recommend this place, there isn't much on Orcas Island and it's nice to go somewhere with simple, good food with a great atmosphere all without breaking your bank! Dining room is a large single room with lots of windows and wood floors, super airy and open yet cozy. My husband got the smoked salmon and cream cheese omelet, really really enjoyed it! Not a huge thing but they forgot the green onion which really would have set it off. He also got an English muffin on the side and said it was the best he ever had! Super toasty crunchy and yummy butter I got the eggs benedict with home fries and a house made sausage patty. The Hollidaise sauce was super tasty-creamy and good hint of lemon. Overall great but it was made with ham instead of Canadian bacon and it *was* thick sliced, but it was kind of soft and under grilled for my taste. The home fries were really good and the house made sausage patty was one of the best I've ever tasted! The servers were very nice but not very attentive. Don't be fooled by the town-local look and feel charm this place has when you walk up. More than half of the customer facing staff are rude, dismissive, and unhelpful. We arrive, wait time was 30 minutes; okay to sit outside? Yes, but we can only order from the to go menu. No problem! Smiles all around, on our side - we had no idea what we were in for. We get through our order, and one in our party asks: would it at all be possible to get some French toast? "Is it on the to go menu?" We look around, uhm not sure? "Then no." The answer was not the problem: the tone and style was completely unnecessary. As we stood outside, dumbfounded, the party next to us, also waiting outside, just started up a conversation about how they were 5 minutes late to their reservation and it was *given away* to someone else. Later, we went to go get forks for our food; none were left. We mentioned it, they shrugged, as if it wasn't an issue or a problem that mattered. We see a table being set; there's a bunch of forks there- hey can we snag a few? "Wait a few minutes and we'll set some out for you." Hey, we just got our food, there's some right there, can we grab a few? The rude person *repeats* themselves. A women comes out of the restroom- there's no TP, do you have a spare roll? "Not right now." A look of unimaginable confusion set across this poor persons face at the rudeness. Consider how many reviews speak to rude service, and consider how many go out of their way to try to counterbalance it. It gets too much attention to be some fluke - it's a real problem. Surprisingly, we ordered within 5 minutes of perusing the menu and about 7 minutes later, our food arrived. Fast for a small, busy restaurant . Perfect example of a place with inflated reviews. Ended up here to pick some lunch to go for the whale watching ride. There were several groups waiting to be seated and I took this as a good sign. We were asked to wait out and so we did. Unfortunately to end up with the iron rod of the umbrella fall on me. Fortunately it fell in a way that It did not lead to any serious injuries or fractures but albeit I was in pain. The server came around in a few minutes and was murmuring about how the umbrellas were not supposed to be open on a windy day. I felt as though he needed to realize that we were not going around opening umbrellas setting tables up to which my husband chimed in and explained that the umbrella had been open before we reached. He apologised and left. We had placed the order for 2 veggie burgers , 1 american cheese bacon and beef burger and a panini. The food was terrible. The cheese had turned and we ditched the burger. The patties of the veggie burger were overbearingly salty and my panini was just ok. The best of the lot. We were charged half the actual price because of the 'incident' . I frankly didnt expect the 'discount' but when told about the same I was left wondering how trivial safety concerns are for them that they tried to minimize the oversight with a 50 % off. Dave, the owner, on our latest visit was incredibly unprofessional and wouldn't allow our large (9 ppl) group to sit together in a completely empty restaurant. After dozens of visits, I can tell you we will never be back to this spot. I haven't written a review in years, but logged in to note our experience with Island Skillet's staff. I can't speak to the food, since we never sat down due to the attitude of the host. However, service is just as important as food (especially when you are in the industry). There are very few places to go for dinner on Orcas this time of year. When we walked in, the male host seemed irritated already. My husband asked if they serve vegan food and his response was "I can't tell you what you can or can't eat so just look at the menu". The tone and overall attitude was so rude that our 8 year old son asked us "why is this man so mean?". My husband had another brief question and his answer was just as jaw-droppingly offensive. It's not always the message, but the way that it's said and comes across. The experience was really unpleasant and we hope that the host can work on his interpersonal skills so others have a better visit. Updated to add: I looked at other reviews and another person had the same experience when asking about vegan food. Many reviews have also pointed out the awful service and attitudes of the staff and owner. Apparently these people dislike those who don't eat meat and overall, dislike serving customers. read more
