Unprofessional, will not stick to commitments, and poor communicators. Dealing with this company means having to stay on top of them like children. I needed to have the slab under my water heater replaced. To do so, I planned to hire the water heater company that initially installed it to come uninstall/reinstall. This means coordinating with two different contractors, one for the water heater and one to pour a new slab. I explained my plan to have the water heater crew come on one day to disconnect, then have the concrete crew come the next day to pour, then have the water heater crew return the following day to re-connect to Islander Concrete, all totaling 3 days. The Islander Concrete rep I spoke with on the phone expressed his concern that my plan would leave my family without hot water for a couple of days. He advised it all get done in one day: water heater in the morning, concrete during the day, water heater at night or the next morning. I was surprised that was possible, but he assured me that wouldn't be a problem since the concrete they use dries very quickly. We agreed on a price and date. I coordinated with the water heater crew and had everything set up. Unprofessional conduct 1: Didn't remember the quoted price. I had to remind him. It's an important detail that is emblematic of their disorganization. Unprofessional conduct 2: Not just no text/call to confirm the day before, but mainly no return text/call when I reached out to confirm the day before. Unprofessional conduct 3: The day the job was supposed to start, Islander Concrete suddenly has an issue with the work starting after 10am (after water heater was to be disconnected), since it would keep their people late, past 4pm. This was never brought up until the day they were supposed to begin work. If it had, I would have scheduled differently. Unprofessional conduct 4: When I asked why they had agreed to my job as planned and never stipulated there was a time requirement, the Islander Concrete guy turned it back on me telling me it was my fault for not telling him the job would start after 10am. Obviously, I wouldn't know that was an issue since I'm not the "experienced professional". Yet instead of apologizing or trying to find a remedy for the situation, he argued with me, holding firm on his position that although he made a commitment to do the job, he wouldn't do it because he agreed without knowing important details. A completely immature response. I canceled the job (on the day it was supposed to start) because he wouldn't accept his fault for poor communication and planning. Ironically, the original three-day plan I presented to him would have worked out had he not been the one to assure me that it could all be done in one day. Now since the water heater crew came through as agreed, my family won't have hot water until I can find another mason crew. read more

Loma did a great job of our concrete needs. We needed some decomposed granite to be dug out of the side yard and then he poured concrete to make the walkway more usable. He was very good at explaining the method he needed to take since we had high retaining wall footing so the floor had to have a little valley to allow the water to flow down. They were very careful not to splash concrete on the side walls of the house or fence. He also helped us fix a poorly done turf job from last year which looks much better now! He also fixed a couple other holes in the concrete around the house. He was very thorough with the job. I must say I was disappointed with the lack of professionalism. He came out to give me an estimate, which I accepted . I waited for his call and he kept telling me he was going to call me back . I called him after a month and asked him why he did not respond and I offered him to up his bid because I thought he had under bid it and that's why he did not respond , and again he said he was going to call me the next day and no respond . We just had a concrete pad made for our jacuzzi and they were so fast, so communicative and reliable, they always answer their phone, they are super fast, their quote was also reasonable. I will definitely use them for our other needs, we still have a wall we need repaired and a wood gate... tons of work to do but I'm glad we found them. The rains were forecasted to start earlier than expected on the week we were going to have the concrete poured and they called us explaining they would like to start after the rain so not to jeopardize the drying and quality of the concrete so we waited, sure enough it poured all night so it was good we postponed the pouring. They gave us ideas for the pad and worked with us to get the right size and thickness. We just needed this pad to put our jacuzzi on (level with the deck) and the lower part is where you come down from the deck it's nice to have a little extra landing space so we are not tracking any grass or mud into the jacuzzi from the yard. We can go in and out of the jacuzzi from the deck, and they helped us with the design, gave us good recommendations. We are happy with their work and communication is very important! We won't work with someone who won't pick up their phone or arrogant or just can't even speak English... and you'd be amazed at how many quotes we got, it was like pulling teeth to talk to anyone, so much work to just get someone to come out and take a look! It's so exhausting!!!!! But these guys will get the job done! And look at how many guys came out to work on the pad! Not just a couple of slow guys. They were all fast and on it! Chop chop! Done! What a fantastic experience. I had a few interesting hurdles to overcome on my job and Loma and his crew exceeded my expectations. I even ended up adding a much needed backyard patio since his prices were so fair. My job included stucco work due to new window and plumbing installation, Kuli is a master of plaster and the new patch really looks fantastic. My concrete was certainly substantial. They had to build a form for a giant hole discovered in our studio once we'd removed an ugly cinder block casing. They had to patch mainline work in the sidewalk. Build and entire set of stairs into our new studio room. And as a bonus we added a 15x22 patio along with a platform for our grill. He showed up the same day and gave me a quote. His prices are good and they started immediately. We embarked on a 4 week project. First off, I want to say Thankyou to Islander concrete for doing a great job. Loma was very patient and answered all of my questions regarding the work I needed done. His estimate was very reasonable and quality of work has my neighbors stopping by (During a pandemic) to give compliments as well as ask for their business info. I have been battling with flooding in my garage (due to my driveways negative slope) for years. It didn't matter if it rained or if we were simply rinsing down the driveway...the entire thing would be flooded front to back. I tried external pumps, garage floor seals etc etc. Nothing worked. So when I spoke with Loma he suggested I install a channel drain and sump-pump to pump the water out into the street. I also had them pour a new walkway and replace all of the concrete infront of my garage. I have a bit more work to do, especially the grass (maybe artificial turf, Idk yet) gravel and adding plants in the beds but as my granny used to say...."Its a marathon, not a race." I am not happy with the final product, nor the actions taken with respect to remedy the situation.  I'll give stars, for initial communication and work up too pouring the concrete.  I initially reached out to Loma to pour approx... 650 sqft of pool deck and 500 sqft of patio.  I initially did not choose him for the patio and went with another contractor, however after seeing their work ethic I knew I would not use them for the pool deck.  During that time Loma had reached out a few times and based on several positive reviews and the fact my pool contractor had an interest in working with him in the past, I decided to give Islander Concrete a try.  Loma answered my questions was very thorough in ensuring the details and I thought fully understood the need for detail.  However sadly the finished product was anything but (see pics). 1st - I just installed a new wall, vinyl fence and there was concrete splatter left everywhere.  I stressed several times that care MUST be taken to ensure no damage, but this seems to have fallen on deaf ears in the end.  Also had my pool contractor not been there watching while the forms were being placed I have no doubt my newly set pool coping would have gotten damaged too. 2nd - A few days after the pour I notice boot marks, bucket marks, and deep scratches all over the new decking.  I called Loma to come out to look and he first "suggested" it was the other trades that did this, but after reviewing video cameras that was not the case.  He had a worker 16 hours after pouring dragging his water bucket, boots and the wood forms all over the new deck. I asked what could be done and just had no confidence in his answers, so I am now left hiring another crew for almost $1000 to try Acid wash, pressure wash and worst case stain the colored concrete. Islander Concrete might be great for basic grey patios, driveways etc. but I would not recommend them for anything colored or where great care is a must. Hopefully something is learned from this and they get better. read more

This review is long over due... I'm so particular when I comes to home renovations and improvements that I interviewed several contractors. I wanted to feel comfortable with who I would be working with since my project IMO would be a large one. Islander concrete was very responsive which was very refreshing since that is always a contractors down fall. Loma and crew were so easy to work with understood what I was looking for and made suggestions/recommendations. I'm very happy with the outcome of my project and will be using Islander concrete for future projects. I will say the only thing they need to improve on is setting the right expectations. I won't dock them a star since I'm happy with the outcome but it took a little longer than expected. read more

It was a two day job, one day for prep work, the other day for pouring the concrete. He came back the day after the pour to inspect the concrete and water it. He gave me instructions on when I can move the shed back on the concrete and when to water it for the next week to make sure everything settled correctly. I've dealt with dozens of contractors in fixing a newly purchased house in Torrance but Loma is hands down the best in terms of value and overall customer experience. -His quote for making a concrete walkway in the backyard was very fair and literally half some of the competitors were charging. -He is punctual. Some contractors say they'll start at 7:30am but show up at 9:30am without bothering to tell you; some even string you along and keep delaying the project start-time for days and weeks. But don't let his laid back demeanor fool you - when Loma says he will come at 8am on a Tuesday, that's what he will do on the dot. -He is prompt and always responsive through text or call before, during, and after the job. -He cares about the quality of the work. Even though he is in charge of a large crew, he gets down and dirty with the rest of them and actually supervises and shows the younger workers the proper way to do things. Bottom line is I was getting jaded by the whole contractor experience - that no matter how carefully I vet them on Yelp, I was still getting no-showed and high-rolled by top rated contractors until Loma came along. Now I know what a good contractor is like and it's night and day. No question I will keep using him for future projects. read more

A liquid amber tree had destroyed my walkway with it's root system and as part of redoing my entire front yard I needed someone to come and replace my walkway. I called and left a message and within an hour my call was returned and Loma told me he could come by later that afternoon to give me an estimate. He showed up on time and gave me an estimate that was very fair. He told he would complete the job in one day and would start at 7am the next morning. At 7am Loma and his crew were out front and removing my walkway. If I wasn't expecting them I wouldn't have even known they were there that's how quiet they were. They demo'd the old concrete, removed several roots big enough to lift the walkway and crack it, removed all grass and weeds, laid the frames and poured the new concrete all within 3.5 hours. By 10:30am the only person left was the finisher that did the final smoothing and detail work. At 1pm the job was complete. The finisher told me Loma would be by in early in the morning to remove the frames and as promised by the time I woke up and looked outside they were gone. In less than 24 hours of contacting Loma the job was complete. I just needed to wait until morning to walk on it. We needed to extend our driveway in December 2019 by approximately 240 square feet.
