My experience at Islands Restaurant was nothing above average. For starters, we were forced to wait at an empty host stand. This would be okay if the restaurant was not completely empty. Then we were brought to our table where we were greeted by our waitress Alex. Alex seemed very unenthusiastic to be serving us. I thought I finally found the Island's locations for my family. Our first visit here we had Chayla as our server. Holy moly. She was the BEST server. Super attentive, super happy, great smile, and she just enjoyed doing her job. We were very WOW'd by her and had such a pleasant experience. Shorebird sandwich - don't get this unless you expect a super flat piece of chicken with some lettuce. Tiki tenders - SO FLAT. SO DRY. Caesar salad - i LOVE caesar salad. You can never go wrong with it but here you can. The salad was not fresh. Very wilted. Not crisp and it was drenched in so much sauce it was a soggy mess. The croutons were rock hard. I couldn't even finish it. The fries - why is it getting so fried and hard? This happened the last 3 times we came here. Not enjoyable. We left with plenty of fries left because no one enjoyed them. Came last night on a Thursday as it was the most horrible experience. We came here thinking we could do a quick dinner with the kids before we go home for bed. NOPE. We ended up being there for 1.5 hour (15 min wait time for table). Server took forever to take our drink order and we were already ready to order once we got seated. The food took SO FREAKING LONG and they decided to give the adults the fries without the sandwiches. It made us start to wonder if they forgot out food. Extremely frustrating when we continued to see them bringing out food for the other tables. Server was not attentive. We didn't even bother to ask him for refills on drinks because that's how long he took. They looked extremely short staff in the kitchen and that can be understandable but there seems to be no acknowledgement at all. Eventually my two kids grew frustrated and impatient. They were tired. It's a school night. Not even enough screentime could help anymore. Took long for him to come to our table to even ask for the check and he saw my frustration, said okay, but yet proceed to another table to take their order and take a long time with that. The food was great, but the service was horrible. The server was weird from the beginning, and hardly checked on us. We needed refills the whole time, but she never came back until we were done with our food. The frustrating part was she kept servicing another table and going back and forth and helping them with a smile on her face. We were 2-3 tables away from that table. I know we aren't the typical family you would find in Orange, Ca but we were at the Discovery Cube all day and just wanted to stop for dinner. We will take our business elsewhere next time. I've been coming to this Islands for several years and this is the first time ever they have cooked the burger properly. Everytime I order a burger cooked medium... Which is apparently the rarest you can get it, the burger usually comes out well to medium well. Zero pink. So... Today I just said I wasn't it as rare as it can be please and it actually came out cooked to perfection... Medium. The fries were crispy and had the exact amount of ghost pepper seasoning I was looking for... Spicy enough to tantalize the taste nodes, but not so spicy I couldn't taste the food. Excellent. We often forget about Islands. The we remember and will hit it up several times. Weekdays they are usually not too busy in the evenings. The weekends can be a bit hectic. Staff tends to be on the young side, but they are always friendly and attentive. All the burgers I have tried have been good. Wife usually gets a salad or fish tacos. It can get a little loud in there, but not much you can do about it. Worth the visit. read more

I am a frequent guest at this location, normally I sit in and eat with family. I love the service and the food. I have had orders mix up but they are always very tentative to fix for me if it happens (more rare for me) This time I ordered to go. I walked up while someone was going through ticket orders, did not say hi or let me know someone would be with me. Then when she was done she asked how she could help me, she waited so long I didn't even think she would be the person taking my order. Order in, only ordered appetizers (3). There was a table that sat down after my order and they received their appetizers and entrees before I even got my order. During this 45 min - 1 hour wait we did go up and ask where our order was, I appreciated that the server (guy) was honest and the kitchen was backed up and apologized. However, why did my appetizer order come after the dine in guest who ordered after me? So I receive my order without complaint, and the manager came over apologized to me and provided me a gift card. Super great. BUT once I got home I became upset again. I ordered beach side sliders which the description is below, now please help me understand what happen with my sliders pictured next to it? Food is ok. Not great. A bit expensive but taste is ok. Service is horrendous. After she took our order we didn't see the waitress again. Had to go looking for someone to refill drinks and refillable items that we had ordered. I was told by the (2) giggling, teenage hostesses that our waitress was busy because she is also the bartender. But I call BS on that because for 20 solid minutes she was nowhere to be found. The food was exceptionally good as I got the maui burger. It had a nice malty cheese that was pleasing, plus creamy avocado. Solid choice for hamburgers and ginormous nachos Islands is the way to go if it is time for a higher end burger than In N Out can deliver. I always get the Kilauea which is kind of "blackened" style cooked in spices. It comes with tasty shoestring onions which make it the perfect combo for that satisfying burger bite. Recently my mother-in-law treated us to dinner here and it was solid as always. The service was a bit off. We were brought our fries first which confused us about if we had ordered a side of fries. The price was a bit high (thanks mom!). My mother-in-law had the nachos and added chicken. It was ginormous. I think it would be a great sharing option on a budget with some drinks. As things stand, we only got mom a glass of wine here and skipped the cocktails in favor of grabbing a few brewskies from the grocery store on the way home. This was the first time we had come to this location for Islands. Staff was SUPER friendly and the manager checked up on everyone to make sure they were satisfied. Our server of the night was Chayla and she was absolutely the best! I kid you not she checked up on us every 10min, never had our drinks empty and was so friendly! She apologized before saying this location was unfortunately understaffed and wait times were a little longer than normal, but she could of had us fooled. Food came out almost immediately, fresh and hot! I'm always honest on my ratings but this deserves a 10 out of 10 would recommend for me! I have been meaning to write this for awhile now since she is almost always the one that helps me but she also makes sure to go above and beyond. July 7 about 1 PM we walked up the host, and he just stood there. No hello, he did not ask table for how many people. We asked for a table for three and he took a while to look over the seating chart. The restaurant was basically emptied. Islands has new menus and increased prices are sky high and not worth the money for their food. We waited 10 minutes for the server, and she finally showed up. As we sat there, we looked around the restaurant and it was emptied, except for two people sitting at the bar. Asked the server for three cokes and it took over 15 minutes for her to return with them. Placed our orders for two hamburgers, two fries and an order of nachos and waited 20 minutes for our order. No fries were delivered after the 20 minutes wait. Nachos were lukewarm. Small amount of tortilla chips, some of the edges of chips were blacken and some were brown. Cheese was chunked in middle of chips and hard to pull apart. By the time the chips were pulled apart the chips were COLD. Did not eat the chips and the server wanted to know if I wanted a box. Informed server the chips belonged in the trash. WORST NACHOS EVER FOR AN OUTRAGEOUS PRICE! As we waited for the two orders of fries two people came to our table to let us know fries will be out shortly. It took over 25 minutes to receive the fries and they were COLD. I took the bowls of fries and looked for a server, could not locate one and went to the bar and asked for hot fries. As we waited for the fries one person finished eating their hamburger and the other person was three-fourths finished with their hamburger. With the outrageous prices, no friendly host, DISGUSTING NACHOS, cold food and poor service we do not plan on ever eating at Islands again. read more

Nothing bad here to eat, my wife had the pineapple chicken sandwich and i had the teriyaki chicken sandwich with a free order of chips and salsa you get when you sign up or reach a certain amount of points. We stopped to eat at Islands Restaurant on 550 North Tustin Street in Orange, CA. This is the third Islands we have eaten at. Steve the nice manager allowed me to take some photos. Brandon our server was super nice and friendly which made it easier to make changes on ordering. Appetizer: I ordered: Spinach Artichoke Dip with side; large guacamole with some salsa. The chips were fresh, crispy, and very tasty. Diana and I loved the spinach artichoke dip. Entrée: I ordered: Hawaiian Burger; teriyaki sauce, pineapple, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion & mayo. side; onion rings. All was cooked to order, fresh and tasty. I drank a Diet Coke with my meal. Diana ordered; Jungle Caesar Salad; grilled chicken breast, mandarin oranges, snow peas, water chestnuts, carrots, fried noodles, sesame seeds, scallions & mixed greens tossed with sesame dressing. fresh and very tasty. Diana drank a Diet Coke with her meal. Dessert: I ordered: Kona Pie; mocha almond fudge ice cream, cookie crust, topped with; white chocolate fudge, whipped cream, roasted almonds and a cherry. it was so delicious. Clean fun environment with a touch of that island tropical feel. What I like about Islands is they're not blasting the tropical music like Rain Forest. You can catch some surfing on TVs and you can check out some cute decor so it does feel like a little escape from reality. We had a pretty good experience the only down side was when we were seated, we were not aware that the bar had a separate menu. My husband and I wanted the white queso chips and salad. They told us we couldn't have it unless we sat in the bar. That kinda surprised us since it's one kitchen in the restaurant, so we were surprised it mattered. So we were given salsa n chips .. which clearly had store bought jar salad. So that bummed us out. So I gave 3 stars because of this. Our meal was great tho, I ordered the birds of paradise on wheat bread with a side of chicken tortilla soup. My husband ordered endless bowl of tortilla chicken soup. I also got a virgin lava flow drink and my husband a moscow mule drink. Everything was delicious. Soo let's just fix that bar food issue Islands! Took my dad to this Islands for his birthday and we were so excited because he loves this chain. I'm pretty sure they sat us far away from everyone else since I had my infant son with me. Normally I wouldn't mind, but there was only one waitress, it seemed, for the entire restaurant. The waitress seemed like she was doing her best, but that's quite the task for one person. This definitely made itself evident in the lack of refills and the fact that our food was cold. Not cool. Cold. Have you ever had a COLD tuna melt? It's disgusting. The fries were cold. It wasn't even our waitress who delivered the food. It looked like a supervisor. My son was doing so well, but it took forever for food to come out and then for someone to come back so we could pay, because he understandably was getting fussy after an hour of sitting there. We all stood up and walked around to find someone to take our credit card so we could finally get out of there. On the down side, everything here is ala carte so a basket of fries are an extra $3.29. For those counting calories, a garden salad is $1.99 with any entree. Things begin to add up. Other menu offerings include appetizers, entree salads, tortilla soup, soft tacos (fish, chicken, pork), large sandwiches, low carb platters, shakes, smoothies, bar drinks, soft drinks, and desserts. Cool atmosphere. The tropical decorated interior is dimly lit with overhead lamps at each table, lots of plants, fake tropical birds, surfboard, straw pattern umbrellas, Hawaii & surf pictures, art, and TVs showing surfing throughout the restaurant & at the straw hut bar area.
