After being away for a long time, I decided to go back to East Cannada, since I heard that it was doing very well and happy So we started off with Mariquita'sS and right away they were soggy and old we returned them. The new ones came hot and good. The location looks very nice. They really did a great job remodeling it and it was pretty busy.. I saw that the prices were higher now so I said well. The food is probably better now. I was correct the food was amazing. I ordered half a chicken boneless grilled and it was amazing. Just like the old days back in 2005 great onions great rice great beans to go with it. This is just a staple around this area and we've recently visited a couple of times (not to mention numerous times throughout several years). Food is usually pretty well seasoned and cooked. Service is good and can be quite fast when not busy. The restaurant is huge, I've never had to wait personally (I'm sure some people may have). Located in a shopping center, free parking available. The frozen lemonade came in a tall, thin glass, mostly filled with ice, and cost $4.79. On the positive side, the Palomilla was juicy and tender, and the rice--as always--was perfectly fluffy. The sopa de pollo was flavorful, and the croquetas remain just as excellent as ever. I tried a new dish, the Camarones Thermidor, but it wasn't true to the classic recipe. Every time I'm in Miami I must get a guava pastry and Cuban coffee. Islas Canarias was the closest Cuban restaurant to where I was staying so I took a walk and made my way over. The place was pretty busy on a Thursday morning around 9 am. We went straight to the coffee counter to order some bevies and grab some pastries. While we didn't try items from the regular menu everything looked delicious. The women behind the counter were really sweet and brought over our coffee at a table once they were done. And then right before we left another server brought us over lollipops and thanked us for stopping in. Great service and even better Cuban coffee. read more

I never thought I would say this but the food (and the croquetas) are not good here anymore. I am especially disappointed in the croquetas... there used to be so much more ham and flavor. They were served not even warm and were very doughy instead of having that healthy pink ham color. The Islas Canarias "best of Miami" days are over. It's the end of an era. This place is a classic staple in Miami. If you grew up here you know about isla canarias. My mom asked me to go here since we were in the area. She always goes to La carreta but today she wanted to switch it up. So we had breakfast here at Islas and we were glad we did. We were sat immediately. You can tell that there are regulars who come here. It wasn't crazy full but it had its fair number of people there. It was during the week too. I suspect that weekends it's ridiculous. When you ask around for best croquettas in Miami, Islas Canarias are in just about everyone's list. So when in the area I had to stop by and get some. Also the weather was a little chilly (for Miami standards) which means it's churro time. We opted to hit the drive thru since we didn't want to get off. They offer also inside dining and have a pick up window. To start, ordering at the drive thru was somewhat funny. They speak mostly Spanish so heads up for you non Spanish speakers. But also the lady was quite snappy and no time for funny business. I'm sure she deals with a lot of folks all day and wants to crank you in and out. So don't expect cherry on top service. After ordering we had to park and wait as the churros were made to order. They food was delivered to our car piping hot. Croquettas were delicious, super creamy and with small pieces of ham inside I guess in case you questioned them. The churros I had a little more of an issue with. First I expect classic churros which means sugar only but somehow these also had cinnamon. So I was surprised. Secondly the price was over $10 for a bag of 10 churros. And they weren't that big so it felt a lot overpriced. Yet they still tasted good and were nice and hot as they are freshly made. My wife thought they were a little underdone. But although I wouldn't order the churros again, those croquettas were another story. There's a reason why they are best in show. They are definitely worth traveling for and I highly recommend. read more

First off the service is impecable. I had the Vaca Frita and omg it was perfect juicy with crispy edges which I love. The yuca was so soft I didn't need a knife. Gone are the days of Islas Canarias being the place to bring people visiting Miami for good Cuban food. Sat quickly, the restaurant wasn't very busy in the late morning. 10 minutes before a server brought water, another 5 before they took our order. Food came out quick, sandwiches were sloppy - only thing good like I remember were the croquetas. Our server had three tables and did not come by once during the meal to offer us more water - we were planning on ordering desserts but he never came back to ask. After half an hour of waiting while our server socialized with his coworkers, I decided to just stand up as a sign that we were ready to go. He brought the check and then offered us water refills. Really poor service, disappointing sandwiches. You can get a better pan con bistec at a gas station. Was wondering why I kept sneezing and when I looked up, all the light fixtures and decor had a thick coating of dust. I usually stop by when I'm in the neighborhood, mainly for the croquetas, which I've always enjoyed. However, something seems to have changed with the shopping center. The parking situation has gotten out of hand -- people cutting others off, speeding around to grab spots, and generally acting aggressively. We decided to go through the drive-thru instead, but that ended up being worse. I was the second-to-last car in line around the curve when cars started flying in at high speed, and large trucks began blocking both lanes. It quickly turned chaotic and unsafe. At one point, a man even got out of his vehicle, came up to my car, and tapped on my window to tell me to move. I explained I was in the drive-thru line -- there was another car behind me -- but I still felt harassed and uncomfortable. I've lived in Miami my whole life and have never experienced anything like that. I ended up leaving the line because no food is worth risking my safety or my car. The shopping center really needs better traffic flow or someone to direct cars, especially near the entrance. Miami has so many great bakeries in safer, more organized plazas -- it's a shame this one has become so stressful to visit. read more

This is one of our neighborhood restaurants, we love going there for the croquetas and Tamales. We absolutely loved today's tamales, their Cuban sandwich was a hit too, I wish they wouldn't cut it the way they do but it's ok. My dad had the palomilla, it tasted really good and he said the meat was soft and cooked right. This place is nothing out of this world, the ambiance is nice and clean.... but the service it was spectacular. We were attended by a lady named Martha and she was such a attentive and sweet women.
