After hearing about this Montclair gem for years, I finally decided to visit for dinner. Everything was fantastic! Our waiter, Cesar, was incredibly attentive. He shared some of his favorite dishes, and based on his recommendations, we ordered the following: - Caesar Salad - Shrimp Fettuccini - Spare Ribs - Lemon Cake For drinks, we had a Cucumber Martini and a Cantarito. Every dish was delicious, and we left feeling completely satisfied. I will definitely return to try more items from their menu!

Nice little spot! Great atmosphere and wonderful service! Ordered the calamari. Lacked flavor. But texture was fine. Dipping sauces were great though. I ordered the salmon with the carrot ginger sauce. I LOVE ginger. Disappointed in the sauce. Absolutely no ginger flavor at all. Not even a hint! But the lemon ricotta raviolis? Amazing!!! Chopped salad was tasty! Oh, and their complimentary bread with olive oil and balsamic? Sooooo good and fresh!

I got takeout from Italian Colors; we ordered the del giorno, calamari, Caesar salad, and green scarves lasagna. It came with free bread that had rosemary in it and it was rather on the sweet side. The caesar salad was decent, but not particular special or memorable. Although the calamari was flavored to my satisfaction, it was not as crispy as I would've liked. The green scarves lasagna was very cheesy and I found the tomato sauce overpowering. I was expecting it to taste more like greens like spinach so it was surprising to me for it to be so tomato heavy. From what I heard the del giorno was pretty good but I did not risk trying it due to the shellfish (it has clams and shrimp, and I may be allergic).

Connor or server was amazingly attentive. And on this day he was the only server with a packed house. Great job

This neighborhood restaurant has been around for years. Longevity speaks for itself. Tonight I ordered the duck with polenta and spinach. The serving was a leg and thigh. Past servings was sliced duck on the polenta. I like getting the two pieces. The skin on the duck was crispy. The duck was not fatty but a tad overcooked for me. The polenta was creamy. Overall I give the dish a 8 out of 10. The tiramisu I had for dessert was overwhelming coffee flavored. It could be from the layer of coffee sauce on which the dessert sat. I think the sauce was too much, making it hard to taste any other flavors in the dessert. Service was very good. The waiter checked on us several times.

A Perfect Oakland Celebration Every so often, you stumble upon a dining experience that reminds you why Oakland is so special--and this was one of those nights. From start to finish, the meal was flawless. This is an updated review- 8 years later since my earlier review is from 8 years ago and I don't know why I haven't reviewed since because I have been back but not a notable occasion. The calamari starter set the tone, crisp and tender. The Brussels sprouts, elevated with Parmesan, were an absolute standout. The pear salad was perfectly tossed, fresh and balanced. For mains, the pizza with mushrooms and fennel sausage delivered on every level, and the linguine vongole was a dream--light, flavorful, and brimming with clams. I brought my 21 year old Jordan Cabernet so I didn't order wine but they have a very good wine selection. Dessert was the ultimate ending: a ricotta cheesecake with a key lime twist, accompanied by pomegranate sauce and whipped cream--simply divine. The service was everything you'd hope for: top-notch, welcoming, and delightfully cheery. This is a family friendly place. There were folks of all family dynamics here tonight; the restaurant decor festive for the occasion. And plenty of parking that feels secure and safe. Special shoutout to our magnificent server, Conor, who made our visit feel extra special. This meal was a beautiful reminder of how extraordinary Oakland is and always will be, a city full of incredible food, community, and vibrance. A true celebration of everything Oakland has to offer.

I visited La Loulou several months ago and wanted to give it some time before writing a review…read more After recently having a wonderful experience at another wine bar, I realized the difference in hospitality was too significant not to mention. I really wanted to like this place. I'd walked by several times and loved the interior design, and the videos on Instagram made it seem like such a great spot. I stopped in one evening by myself, ordered a glass of wine and the warm olives (which were delicious), and was looking forward to a relaxing night. Unfortunately, the service was the biggest disappointment. The restaurant was packed, and the atmosphere felt more concerned with maintaining an image than making guests feel welcome. I understand some restaurants embrace a more reserved European style of service, but this came across as cold and pretentious rather than intentional hospitality. As a solo diner especially, I didn't feel acknowledged or valued as a guest. It also didn't help that the dining room had a noticeable body odor smell that took away from the experience. On a positive note, the bathroom was clean and beautifully designed. I originally thought this would become my go-to place to grab a glass of wine while waiting for a table at the ramen spot next door, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Reading through other reviews, it seems I'm not the only one who had this impression. Oakland's charm has always been its people. You can open a French-inspired wine bar, but hospitality translates into every language. If you're going to bring a Parisian aesthetic to Oakland, don't mistake indifference for sophistication. Guests should leave feeling welcomed, not judged.

Unfortunately, the execution didn't match the ambition. Let's start with the atmosphere. The restaurant presents itself as upscale dining, but there were multiple TVs throughout the dining room blasting a basketball game the entire night. I don't understand the choice. If you're going for a high-end experience, commit to it. The TVs completely distracted from the ambiance and made the whole place feel confused about what it wants to be. The food itself was underwhelming. I ordered a non-alcoholic drink for $10, and it was so packed with ingredients that I could barely drink it through the straw. It felt more like someone was trying to show off than create a balanced beverage. The chicken wings were also oddly served as one large connected piece. While that may be intentional, it made them awkward and messy to eat, especially as a shared appetizer. My entrée was the biggest disappointment. It wasn't bad, but it lacked flavor. It needed seasoning, salt, acidity--something. For a restaurant charging premium prices, I expected dishes that made an impression. Instead, everything felt muted. The most frustrating part of the evening was a menu substitution issue. The dish I ordered came with meatballs. I asked to substitute shaken beef. On the menu, it stated "shaken beef +$12." My assumption was that I was replacing one protein with another and paying an upcharge for the difference. Instead, they simply removed the meatballs, charged me the full additional $12, and gave me the shaken beef. Had the server explained that I would be paying the full upcharge while losing the original protein entirely, I would have made a different decision. Maybe I would have kept both. Maybe I would have ordered something else. The point is that nobody explained it. At this price point, that level of communication matters. Then came the bill. We ordered two appetizers, four entrées, one glass of wine, and three non-alcoholic beverages. At the end of the meal, everyone at the table guessed what the total would be. The highest guess was $150. The actual bill was $251 before tip. Nobody was shocked because it was expensive. We were shocked because the experience, food, and service simply didn't justify the price. I don't mind paying premium prices when the food is memorable and the service is thoughtful. Unfortunately, this felt like a restaurant charging luxury prices while delivering an experience that was, at best, average. Beautiful space. Confusing atmosphere. Underseasoned food. Poor communication. Very difficult to justify the cost.
