MY NEW FAV SPOT IN OAKLAND . The food is good, the vibes are great, and the crowd is safe ! It's a mature crowd that hangs out there 30+, it feels so homey and safe hanging out here. Being in Oakland that's VERY IMPORTANT. Their BUFFALO WINGS are the BEST wings I've ever had 10/10. The chicken fettuccine was great also 9/10. Oh and the Calamari is THE STAR of the show 11/10. DO NOT GO HERE THEY STEAL!! I went here 9/5/26 and bought 2 lemon drops for 28.68. My girl bought the second round and tipped as well. I made sure to sign my receipt where I zero'd out the tip portion because I left a few dollars in cash. Today I received a email that my total was now updated to 33.68 so the server or one of the other workers helped themselves to a 5 dollar tip! If I didn't want to go through the hassle of canceling my card and waiting for a new one I absolutely would report fraud to my bank. I stopped by to support black owned businesses but sadly it's always your own who get over. I will not be returning to this establishment but I'm leaving this as a warning to check your receipts and statements!! read more

First of 10 out of 10 bread pudding dessert. I would go there just for that any day of the week. Secondly the catfish sandwich was the best, biggest fish sandwich of any kind I have ever had. So satisfied. Thirdly the Wings were awesome. I literally need to try the entire menu. They have a bar area you can eat and mingle with people or seated dinning area. I prefer the bar area to socialize with other patrons and find more wonderful places to try. This is one of my favorite places to go in Oakland period. Came here after work for some wings and a drink. The atmosphere was chill. I loved the music (early 2000's r&b). They had $1 wings - which is unheard of nowadays! I got buffalo + lemon pepper. They were a TAD salty but for $1 you can't beat that. Overall, it was a great experience and I wouldn't mind coming back. Note - parking is limited. It's an OK neighborhood spot. I waited at the bar but couldn't get anyone's attention. It has rooms available for small events. Decor was like used home furniture. I never checked out the bathrooms. The patio area off the back was quaint but I didn't see any heat lamps so a warm evening would be best. If the venue provided the food it looked just ok but not appetizing enough to try. One of my coworkers ordered food to go and she said it was "just ok" and it took a long time to get served. The parking is very congested and the lighting was poor. Date: 6/26/2025 Time: 6:45 PM 65° Sunny My male companion and I are at D Monaghan's for his birthday (73 years young). It is our first time dining here. Since he treated me to a memorable dinner for my birthday exactly seven months ago, I did likewise. Our birthdays are on the 26th, but different months (June, November). We arrive and a waiter tells us to take a seat anywhere in the restaurant. I was expecting a maitre'd or a host to escort us since my companion made reservations for dinner at 7 PM. Dining at any restaurant for the first time means I usually order an Arnold Palmer to determine whether the food is going to be tasty and delicious. The Arnold Palmer has a nice balance of lemonade and iced tea. Did the Arnold Palmer pass the test? Yes, it did (4 stars)! Eats: Starter is a beet salad consisting of spring mix greens, diced beets, thinly sliced orange, candied walnuts, diced goat cheese topped with a balsamic vinaigrette. (4 stars). I'm not even a goat cheese fan. LOL. Next up was salmon (me) and steak (birthday guy). Salmon was topped with a wine glaze and served with roasted potatoes and seasoned vegetables. Salmon was fresh and moist. Meal was on point (4 stars). Steak was a NY steak also served with the same sides. The steak was well seasoned, but it had a chewy texture...ugh gristles. My man said the steak was the wrong cut. He also felt that the sauce should have been Lea & Perrins worcestershire sauce instead of A1 sauce. (3 stars). We passed up on dessert. The description of the bread pudding with vanilla ice cream probably would have been delicious, but I was full. Service could have been better. Waiter had a nonchalant demeanor, and an average degree of attentiveness (3 stars). The ambiance is casual and comfy. We had window seats looking out to the outdoor patio. (3.5 stars). Inasmuch as I would like to have given D Monaghan's a 4 star rating, and there is no 3.5 star ratings on yelp, I had a choice of either rounding up or rounding down. In this case, I rounded it down to a three stars. In comparison to other dining venues such as Parche (uptown Oakland), Alley & Vine (Alameda), Willows & Pine (Dimond District), Angelina's Louisiana Kitchen (Berkeley), Coqueta (SF) and The Waterfront Restaurant (SF), D Monaghan's left me a certain level to be desired. Also, street parking was problematic and there was no parking spaces in their lot. By luck, my man found a parking space 1/2 a block away after searching around the corner. (2.5 stars) Future visit? We went here for a Thursday Night Football game. First, I was happy there were plenty of 49ers fans. That's enough for 2 stars out of the gate. Lol It's not a big sports bar. It seemed to be more a local spot - comfortable, cozy, and relaxing. It could use an update in the furniture and A/V equipment, but we had a good time nonetheless. The bar area was a little crowded, and it took a while to get our drinks. But, the bartenders and wait staff were friendly and patient. The wings were good. I only wish people cooked them longer. They weren't raw, but I like mine more well done and wasn't around when we ordered. My bad !!! This is definitely a spot I would recommend and return to. I had the chicken masala, mixed veggies and mashed potatoes. Had a Guinness which I hadn't had in a longggg time. We enjoyed our hot entrees and even had enough for lunch the next day. Desserts? I went here for a birthday party, where the restaurant catered the event. We were in a reserved area that was quite small. The chicken wings were good, the chicken Alfredo was okay. Stopped by D Monaghan's right after work to check it out. I've always been curious about this place and when I discovered it was Black-owned, I made sure I went. I love the location, the ambiance is amazing, the decor is nice. I sat outside and the weather was perfect, so was the patio vibe. The service was excellent, my server was attentive but not pushy. The food was just incredible. The Buffalo Cauliflower was extremely flavorful, that great buffalo wing spice with a perfectly cooked cauliflower texture. The mojito was good as well. Let's just say a very generous portion of alcohol with the minty flavor was right on point. Though I only ordered an appetizer and drink, it was enough to make me want to return. Our first time back since the pandemic and I made reservations and we went inside and the main outdoor area was busy as a large group just came in so the hostess suggested the side patio which was fine as there were 4 of us and we wanted to have a quiet dinner. One thing I noticed is that the servers did not wear face masks so it must be optional for the business. We order the fried calamari, the seafood pasta, the fish with cannelloni beans, bacon and spinach and the chicken fettuccine. All were hearty and delicious and our friends enjoyed the atmosphere and the weather was just right. Heat lamps were available but it was a balmy warm evening so there was no need for the lamps. Came here for a surprise brunch for a friends birthday. About an hour wait for the food I got the shrimp and grits and an egg white omelet for my bf. My food came about 15 min before his which was extremely awkward. When his food finally came it was not egg whites and he cannot eat the yolk. They have an egg white option on the menu which is the only reason I asked for egg white omelet. The person who took our order did apologize and she said that it's such a long prices to separate the eggs from the yolk and that they ran out of eggs and they have brown eggs not sure what that had to do with the egg white but my boyfriend could not eat the food i feel terrible for convincing him to come on his one day off and it's 3pm he still has not eaten. We came here for a birthday dinner. I had never been here before. My first thought upon arrival was the parking was pretty terrible. Car lot holds about 8 cars max so you have to find street parking in the residential neighborhood around the block. Luckily we found one on the next block pretty quick. We get to the entrance and two huge black dogs were posted at the front door. Don't know if they belonged to the owners or a patron. Both were wearing vests, but clearly not service dogs. Patrons were trying to avoid crossing them going inside. Not very welcoming! We go inside and the hostess said she didn't know who took our reservation, so she needed to go find them. Why would you need to find them if it's in the book? So we waited about 15 minutes to be seated. We get seated in a side room off the patio. Yesterday was a cold day. They had all the windows and doors open in the room. Eventually after complaining, they closed the windows but the doors were still open. So basically we froze the rest of the evening. After a few drinks it wasn't so bad, but still cold. We ordered cocktails, appetizers, salads and entrees. Some of our drinks came out at different times. So while the other folks in my group were drinking, 2 of us waited 15 minutes for ours. Our appetizers, salads and entrees all came out at one time about 45 minutes after we ordered. Would have been nice to get the salad and appetizers first. So the table was crowded with so many plates at once. We never got our appetizer plates we asked for. We ordered side salads. They told us it wasn't on the menu but we could still order them. When the salads came out, they were all cobb salads. Even though when we asked what was on the side salad we were told just Romain Lettuce, tomatoes and bacon. But when it came, it had Bleu cheese and eggs. When we got the bill, we got charged for a cobb salad, not a side salad. The place was loud and the patrons were a little on the ratchet side. I'm not a sport's fan, but was told there was a game that day which was the reason for the large crowd of people that day. So, I'd say if you want to avoid the ratchet crowd, don't come on game days. Despite the issues, the food was actually pretty good, and the staff was friendly. The only food complaints I have is my broccolini was turning yellow, so it probably wasn't very fresh and the street corn was a little over cooked. Staff just needs to be more educated about their own menu and do better with timing on when food is supposed to come out during service. We enjoyed the birthday gathering. But I would probably never come back unless somebody invites me again for a dinner party. But never to come back for myself. read more

Wow! We just had brunch today at Monaghan's. Every dish we had was delicious. We ordered the cheesy shrimp & grits, chicken and waffles, French toast and the cheese and veggie omelett. The grits were so flavorful, hands down the best grits I've ever tasted. The chicken was crispy and cooked to perfection. The French toast was perfectly spiced and the omelette was delicious. Hats off to the chef. If you are looking for a welcoming neighborhood restaurant with excellent food, friendly service and reasonable prices, this place is a must. read more

What a fun, fun place. A few of our SDSU Alumni, Finest watch the Fighting Aztec's play in the NCCA Championship Finals. One of our group members selected Monaghan's. What a great place, to socialize, eat great food, enjoy a nice cool beverage that are reasonably priced. Carla and the rest of the staff are friendly, helpful and will go the extra mile to make sure your food is serve hot and in a timely manner. The ribs were over cooked and the sauce wasn't good. The catfish was over cooked and very fishy. The tarter sauce was just ok. The salmon wasn't any bad. Before today, I last went to this place about 15 years ago. It was brighter, staff was friendly and attentive, and pub grub decent. Today, the outdoor patio appeared nicer and it had some fresh paint, however the food and service was dismal. We were a party of 5 and 2 arrived 10 minutes before the other 3 and ordered early - both their dishes arrived last in the group and 1 of 2 orders was wrong. The wait time for food was 50-65 minutes and it was an uncrowded Sunday brunch. Our dishes were spaced apart so we were not able to eat at the same time , very strange. Only 2 tables had people in the dining hall! The place was mostly empty, except for the dozen or so people in the bar. When the food finally did come out. It was undercooked and the potatoes were not warm. I ordered the crab omelette and for $20 I expected fresh crab. The crab was a strange color, was fishy (not fresh) and appeared to come from a can. I was starving and choked it down and felt nauseated an hour later. One other person on our table had the same dish and could not eat it. We ran out of water a couple times and "bottomless mimosas" and had to call over the waiter or find them to get refills. The front door was propped open the entire time (I tried to close it once) and 2nd hand smoke from people smoking outside kept drifting inside to where we sat eating. Midway through brunch, a woman started vacuuming the entrance. The bathroom was in sad shape, the soap dispenser didn't work, the hand dryer didn't work, the tall trash can was in the center of the room against the sink. We felt unwelcome and that the management did not care about their restaurant. None of us are going back. It's sad, it's a nice location with so much potential and the man that initially greeted us was warm and friendly. It was all downhill after we sat down. read more

First and last time coming to this restaurant. Arrived around 3pm with 3 friends and we did not get our main courses until after 5:30pm! There was little to no apology from our waitress nor the owner. In fact the owner decided to blame the large party of 15 that was across the hall; however, NUMEROUS parties that arrived well after ours received their food first! If you don't have enough Staff you should limit the number of reservations you take to make sure that you can actually provide good customer service. Yes we ordered appetizers which were good and our first round of drinks came out promptly, but everything after that just went downhill. Once our food came out we were actually all pretty disappointed. My chicken Marsala was bland and lacked the wine sauce I had been craving for. The scallop potatoes were supposed to be mashed, I was disappointed there as well. I didn't end up eating the meal, which is the ONLY reason it was taken off the bill. Overall I do not recommend this place and I won't be trying it again! read more
