Because he's so anxious, he barks a lot, and he hides from strangers who come into the house. With Susan's help, we modified his training and even got him on medication (Susan wrote us a SIX PAGE REPORT to show the vet as evidence that Oliver needed medication). A lot of people are hesitant to put their pets on behavior meds, but they have made a world of difference when combined with Susan's gentle, force-free training methods. Oliver's quality of life is just so much better now. He can now go out on walks, greet strangers and guests, and stay quiet when there's a knock at the door. Oliver will never be the most outgoing dog ever, but he's at least a happy dog now. Susan has also helped out with our other two dogs, Houston (8-year-old Golden Retriever), and Zoe (1-year-old maltipoo). With Susan's help, I've taught them how to calm themselves down and be quiet when there are guests. They even have a "go to your mat" command and they'll all happily lie down on a bath mat together and stay there while I cook dinner or clean up around them. Susan is also fantastic because she keeps you on track and is always available to answer questions. After every session, she writes you a long, detailed email with your "homework" so that you don't forget what you've learned. Through email, she answers questions, looks at any videos you might have taken of you training with your dog, and gives you tips in areas you're struggling. This trainer is my hero!!! I will always call on her if I need any help with the dogs.

The shelter felt she was reactive due to being jealous of other dogs getting taken out of their kennels by prospective adopters. We brought her home and she has been amazing! She became part of the family instantly, BUT we had a miserable time taking her on walks. Inside the house she was well behaved, outside she was a different dog. She was hyper-vigilant and very reactive towards other dogs. The shelter provided two free training sessions. My son and I took our girl to the trainer and this guy proceeded to abuse our dog like NOTHING I've ever seen. I was traumatized as well as my son. I forfeited my second lesson as I did not want to subject our dog to this kind of torture. My wife knew of a co-worker who was trying to become a dog trainer. We had him come over and work with our dog. Sadly this guy was way under qualified and simply didn't know what he was doing. One of my clients recommended Susan from At A Pooch's Pace. I was thrilled to see her certificates and that she was a proponent of Positive Reinforcement Training. Our consult with Susan was so different than the other trainers AND we saw immediate results! She has been a godsend! Not only is she super knowledgeable about dog training and conveying the methods to her clients, she is a source of moral support. I can't count how many times I was feeling down about what neighbors were saying about our dog or if we would ever be able to go out on a walk with her again. Susan bolsters the confidence of her clients AND their dogs! I've been working closely with Susan now for several months. She's great at communicating. She sends detailed emails with attachments (I made up a book/binder to keep them organized!) She sends links to videos. She answers all questions and backs up all her training methods with current science. Our Shannon has learned so fast (as have I!) and she is almost done with her basic obedience training and we are getting ready to transition to behavior modification! I have full faith in Susan that our newest family member will be able to go on a walk without scaring all the neighbors who are walking their dogs! If you are looking for a dog trainer, look no further. Susan is simply the best. It took me three tries to find the right one. Our first trainer was 100% aversive and abused our dog. Our second trainer was a fan of Caesar Milan and basically got his "training" from ordering Caesar's videos off of Amazon. Susan is the real deal. A good friend of mine told me the owner abused his dog there instead of using professional and proper dog training. A true professional dog trainer does NOT inflict pain or abuse to the dog. Unless you have a camera watching what goes on with your dog 24/7, please do not leave your dog there. It is cruel! This does NOT represent an owner who cares about dogs.

"Two sibling dogs were being moved to our Tiny Town building when they became nervous and began pulling at their leashes and flailing. After bringing them back inside, our staff member decided to carry them for a second attempt. While being carried, the dogs became distressed again. One bit the staff member's hand, and during the struggle, the other got free and ran away." This social post includes details we were not originally told, ie the flailing, distress, biting, 2nd attempt to move them, etc. In fact, prior to this incident the staff consistently raved about how gentle, sweet, well behaved my dogs are (& documented this too). If the pups were truly "distraught," what caused this change in behavior (for example, fear of larger dogs they were moved in with?); and if they were "flailing," how would carrying them both outside simultaneously be safer or more effective in transporting them? Their FB post reads like a cover-up. When I attempted to respond on their FB, my message was instantly deleted and my account blocked. Furthermore, I attempted to log into my Wags online account to gather more information, however, the account was already deactivated. Sadly, after Raven's death I have learned from multiple tangible sources that there have been numerous incidences with mistreatment of dogs (both Tustin & RSM locations). One specific employee (the one who mishandled sweet Raven) is still currently employed at RSM to this day with no repercussion, AND in the past has caused dogs to be sent to vets for mishandling. How are the Wags owners allowing this to happen??? They indicate they are updating protocol.... I want to know specifically what they are doing to make changes, and why is that employee still employed?? THIS IS SO UNACCEPTABLE IN SO MANY WAYS! I do feel for the majority of the staff who are dog lovers - they are overworked and not all properly trained for emergencies. My message to dog owners: do your due diligence and research. If you have any doubt, would you risk boarding your pet at Wags & Wiggles after hearing these accounts? Thank you for reading and for helping protect our pets. Please share this story as you see fit. I chose Chris because of her extensive knowledge and experience with working with dogs without damaging their spirit. It's so important to me that the person I trust around my new furry family member wouldn't use force, fear or "the alpha" method because I've seen how those negativity affect the mental health of a dog. The last visit we never receive a call that our dog "COWBOY" was done. Typically he takes two hours but after two and a hlf hours I started to call but my call went to voice mail. Not having a problem in the past I let it ride for another hour and then decided to visit the shop to see what was up. By the time I arrived he was done and the heavy set girl at the counter asked if I would like to leave a tip and I asked for what he had been there for four hours at that point and when he came out it was obvious that he was in distress not having to go potty the entire time he was there. I chalked that the issue was related to the person I was dealing with and her complete lack of social skills. Our appointment was today at 10:00 AM, we were held up by morning traffic and when we arrive I took him for a short walk to relieve himself. When we walk in I was not met with a greeting but was asked if this was COWBOY and I acknowledged that he was. I was then hit with a comment that the rules stipulate the there is only a fifteen minute grace period and that she need to check with the groomer before she could accept my dog. Yes it was the same heavy set gal. I have been coming here for years and have spent 1,000's of dollars here and now I have to be explained what the rules are even though I have never had any type of problem in the past. I guess that there is a new sheriff in town and I need to learn my place. I do not know who owns this place but want to make it clear that I am certainly not going to be abused by a dog groomer receptionis. you can look up my account to see who I am and my promise is that I will not spend another nickel at Zuri as long as this individual works there. Authority is a privilege and should not be given to individuals that are not responsible or mature enough to understand how it is to be used. In this case this person feels she is entitled to chase customers away. If you feel that is the proper way to use it I do not think that you will be in business much longer. Remember dog groomers are paid for with discretion art funds and in the case of a bad economy or poor service dry up pretty fast. Do yourself a favor and eliminate this problem as soon as you can. I would give my rating a minus number if I could.
