For 20 years I have driven by Ivar's and never stopped. I've been missing out on a great little diner. Two of us dined for lunch 3 weeks ago. We each had a bowl of chowder and split a fish & chips basket. The breaded fish was so good. The French fries were decent but not overly seasoned. My companion chose smoked salmon chowder, which is called a bowl of red and thought it was too salty. My chowder was classic white and seasoned just right, but had several chewy clam pieces that I had to discard. A very nice cashier threw in a 10% senior discount for the whole meal. Thank you kind sir. The restaurant seems exceptionately well-maintained and clean. Friendly ambiance. We enjoyed our food in a half-packed dining room where everyone seemed glad to be there. Clam Chowder is good. Not your Boston clam chowder, but still decent. My companion got the Rock Cod combo, which he said the fish was decent, but the fries OK. Take into account that all sauces were empty and unavailable, and the gal at the counter didn't seem the most friendly. This costed $40! And with that into account, I would say that is not a good price for a very mid dinner. read more

This was my first time visiting the location. The lighting was nice and the restaurant was quiet. The late lunch crowd was just starting to come in. I ordered a five piece fish n chip and a cup of clam chowder. The fish n chips came out looking like they were fried in old oil and they were too brown. Also they were half the size of the normal fish n chips. The fries were just warm. I'm not sure why they took so long to cook the food. The clam chowder was scary. It was just water and didn't have the thick chowder consistency. I don't know if they just gave me food that was below quality standards or if this was the normal service. Well this is my first and last time visiting this location. I never have this service or low quality food at my local Ivars. read more

Visited Ivar's on a Sunday night to take advantage of their Panko Breaded Fish Sandwich special for $8.99 with fries or $7.99 sandwich only. I requested a side of onion rings instead instead of fries and was not charged anything additional. The fish sandwich was good - a nice portion of cod that was crispy and cooked to perfection. The onion rings were also delicious. My only issue would be that the Hawaiian bun was not fresh, warmed or toasted. The hard bun did not complement the freshly fried fish. The service was friendly and quick. The Panko Breaded Fish Sandwich special will run until the new year - Jan. '25. read more

We frequently dine in Bothell and was in Edmonds and decided to have a meal. We ordered the Full Boat. Great deal for 3 people or so. My parents and I ordered delivery from the Ivar's Seafood Bar in Edmonds today, Saturday 26 August 2023, for dinner. Online ordering was straightforward and when placing the order pictures of the menu item were displayed alongside the item description. We went with a couple of sides, tartar sauce, my parents shared a cod and chips, and I got the four piece salmon and chips. The wait time was about 20 minutes with delivery, we were about 1.8 miles from the restaurant. The delivery woman was friendly and the items we ordered arrived in good condition. Warm food items were still warm, while the cooled items, such as the coleslaw, were still cool. The salmon had a strong salmon flavor with a thin batter and was not overly fried. Both the salmon and cod were flaky, the cod more so. Fries were thin and softer texturally, which I enjoyed. Tartar sauce was less intense in flavor and paired well both with the salmon and the fries. The serving sizes were just right for our dinner. read more

For "fast food" fish, this deserves five stars. My husband had the original recipe cod which he really liked for the light, crispy batter that didn't overtake the fish. I tried the panko crusted cod and preferred that because of the cut (more butterfly filet style than the strip style of the original) and the extra crispy texture from the panko breading. Their tartar is mayo-heavy and delicious. The cole slaw is solid with some extra salt and pepper. Whenever I come home to Seattle, I make it a point to eat at Ivar's. The cod and halibut with chips are generally my favorites. Either way you get flavorful fish that flake apart, with a thin breadcrumb-style breading that clings to the filet without being thick and doughy. This style yields a crisp bite that makes the fresh fish the star, and it's never oily. The white chowder is really creamy - I'd add more fresh pepper if I were making it for myself - and the fries have changed to a much thinner cut than that of my childhood. But the rest hasn't changed! This particular location is usually half full for dine-in around lunchtime. The busy / overworked front of house does nevertheless get orders right and brings your food to you if you dine in. read more

For decades I have always enjoyed the food at Ivar's restaurant, no matter where or which restaurant location I would eat at. For the same amount of time I've always thought that they were very overpriced for what they serve. However, no one makes fish the way they do and as tasty as they do. They take cod or salmon and make it quite delicious, and they always have. I like their chowder pretty good, I don't eat their French fries, or anything else but the fish is quite delicious. This restaurant has ample parking and is pretty easy to get to. It's just a bit more rundown in that it could use some sprucing up. It has a feel as if it's been there for quite some time and just needs the polishing to make it look and feel more up to date. On this visit I was part of a crowd of people on the lunch hour but they are very efficient and move people through very quickly. I really appreciated the young cashier as she was on point with taking care of the customers. Not much more that can be said about ivars. It's a staple in Seattle and they don't miss with the flavor of the fish. For decades it's always tasted the same and fortunately it's always been tasty. read more

We ordered a 5 piece Cod Fish and Chips takeout. When we opened up the order the pieces were small, some 1" in width with the crust. The pieces were broken. The fries were soggy and limp. We had to fry them at home to get any crispness. A child's order? Or, do takeouts get less quality and care? We will not be ordering again. I wish I could give this place 6 stars *and I don't say that for almost anything. This salmon could have been served at one of the nicest restaurants I've ever been to and I wouldn't have questioned it! The salmon had this nice crisp on the outside while still being moist and not at all dry on the inside. On top of that, the flavor profile was perfect. I typically like a little lemon on my salmon, but I forgot about the lemon sitting right in front of me because it was just THAT good! Commentary specific to COVID times: everyone was socially distanced and the staff wore gloves and masks. It was nice, we ordered and then the meal was brought out to our car where we sat anxiously waiting. Overall, I can't recommend this place enough! ...oh and on top of all that, did you know?? The heir of Ivars didn't have any heirs, so he donated all proceeds to University of Washington and Washington State University! Came in for Clam Chowder and as usual it was very good. Sadly this location doesn't offer oysters crackers. I've been to others that do.

I ordered the newer Spicy Chicken Sandwich with fries and it was really good. The only caveat I would say was the limp lettuce but it started out crisp and became limp because my order was to go and I am a slow eater. It didn't have a dill pickle on it which would've been great but I put one on from my refrigerator and voila! It was good and I would definitely order it again. I have heard from a friend that Chick filet now uses lab grown chicken which to me is disgusting because from what I understand is they use cancer cells from the chicken cells which reproduce quickly, which is why I am so glad I have another option when I am at Ivar's for those times when maybe I don't want fish. The Ambiance was nice inside the seafood bar while I was waiting for my order as they were playing music from the 50's aka Rock n Roll. read more

Okay.... So we thought we would give Ivars another try. My husband had gone here a few weeks ago and ordered the chicken sandwich. He raved about it and wanted me to try one. So I said I would give it a try. Well.... They didn't have it anymore!! What??? Said now they were serving a fish sandwich instead. So since he said the chicken one was so good we gave it a try. WORST FISH SANDWICH EVER! First the bun was huge... but ice box cold. They didn't even heat it. Then there was a thick chunk of over cooked fish plopped on it with a piece of whitish colored end piece lettuce and a end piece slice of tomato. Tiny squirt of tarter. It was disgusting. I took the fish out and just ate it. Check out my picture of the remaining bun. Chowder was warm. Not hot like it should be. Guess they haven't improved. So sad. read more

Finally decided to stop and eat at this location of Ivar's. I have not had any Ivar's in years so I was kind of disappointed. The service was friendly but the food was just ok. The famed clam chowder was more broth than anything else. I also got the sampler of fried food vs the clam basket we also got. Over all ivars is a fast food/ sea food type of place. Everything is more or less fried but that doesn't mean it's not good. Just a little oily. Just ordered here and right off the bat, the cashier was so rude. We decided to not tip her at the cash register in response to her unnecessary hostility, and she rudely said "thanks for the tip" making the situation even more uncomfortable than it already was for us. I've been going to this Ivars since I was a child, so this was an interaction I've never encountered there before. We liked it. Fresh and tasty. I'm pretty picky about my chowder and this one hit the spot because it has right size chunks of potatoes and other fixings.
