Had such a lovely time at Pai Men Miyake in Portland over the weekend. Stopped in because I was craving ramen and the reviews said great things. We got brussel sprouts and pork gyoza to share: the brussel sprouts were phenomenal and we ate them so fast (lol), the pork gyoza could have used a bit more flavoring for me personally but the meat inside was super tender! I ordered the chicken shio ramen and it was pretty good, but I maybe would've like some more spice in there, so maybe I should've ordered something different! My partner got the beef short rib buns which he loved. The service was pretty fast and we were able to be seated quickly which was great as we were starved! My wife had a craving for some good ramen and this came up as possibly our best option. Especially considering they had duck ramen as an option. We showed up with a small line waiting to get in/pick up orders. Once inside we waited a little bit for the staff to arrive to greet us, once they did we were told it would be a wait for a table or could sit at the kitchen bar right away. We snagged the two furthest bar seats with a slight peak into the kitchen watching food being prepared. They had QR codes around for you to scan to pull up the menu. Overall it's a small space as well as being a thin and narrow space. Be ready for a possible wait for a spot to open up. To start off we grabbed some cocktails, my wife got their Shiso Lucky (Roku Gin, shiso, lime) and I got Kochi Sunset (Shochu, yuzu, blood orange). Also for a starter we decided to have the Lobster Buns. Cocktails were great and well made. The lobster buns were a fantastic unique way of enjoying lobster. My wife did find the texture of the bun to be not ideal but overall enjoyed it. Entree wise we both decided on the duck ramen. We both enjoyed it very much, my wife could have done without the menma (fermented bamboo shoots). I wish it had more duck in it honestly. The duck was extremely tasty in both the normal meat and meatball. For our return eventually we will both likely try a different ramen to branch out. Overall a pretty solid overall experience. Some small changes could make me change it to a five star from my current four. It certainly fulfilled the ramen craving and I could see this being a no -brainer for stopping at during the brutal winters Maine has. read more

Fries to perfecting and dressed with fish sauce, lime, mint, cilantro and scallion. It is in this chaos you will find perfection. For the love of.....hamayaki?! What's not to love about crab and scallops covered in kewpie mayo and broiled? NOTHING, the answer is nothing. If no one was looking I'd eat this with my hands. It's basically dessert with a hint of truffle oil. Tantanmen Ramen is dripping with homey comfort with its rich pork and chicken broth perfectly seasoned. Not a thing to mention. It's just as good as everyone says it is. The noodles and broth in the ramen are genuinely in their own lane in Portland. The lobster buns are a must if you can get them. I'm pretty sure it's 10 for one but that's worth it in my opinion. I always opt for the Shojin Ramen and it is always a hit. Their outdoor seating section is wonderful in the summer. I cannot stop thinking about the katsudon rice bowl for real! The mushrooms were life changing. I have no clue how they cooked them but they were so meaty, umami and sweet at the same time. Genuinely the best mushroom I have ever had! The pork was perfectly cooked, not chewy and very crispy and the egg 'noodles' were a really nice component in the bowl. My second visit to Pai Men was the best experience, having tried three times and three varieties. The miso was the best, imo. The broth is great and the chashu is also great. The Tantanmen was not like a soup at all, more like a spaghetti ragu with an entire diced white onion on top. The pork bun is the highlight. One of the best small bites I've had of anything anywhere. If you go for a lunch special, you can get a bowl plus one bun (or other app) for about $24. At these absurd prices, I'm more than content with microwave ramen over this. read more

My husband and I visited this cozy little restaurant in Portland a few weeks ago. It was well kept and felt clean. The staff were respectful and the service was fairly quick. I got the grapefruit honey spritz and I was so happy with it. It was the perfect fruity drink that wasn't overly sweet. The pork buns were also incredible! We really enjoyed these and they were the perfect app to our meal. We also got the chicken Karaage and it was a great flavor and very light and crispy. Sadly, neither of us were huge fans of the ramen we got. The flavors were off in both of them and we left a lot of it untouched. I was craving donburi, and I cleaned that bowl up. It was exactly what I needed -- perfect comfort food with the right amount of tonkatsu sauce and steamed egg delight. Nothing crazy special but everything just right. My friend enjoyed her ramen but the lobster was a bit of work to get the meat out of the tail with chopsticks. I had a cocktail but it wasn't that memorable. It's nice that there is an "Asian twist" on their cocktails but about half are pretty simple. The place is small but we seem to always get a table without too long of a wait. We were very excited to try out this place given the reviews. However, we were truly disappointed. We decided to sit indoors because of the heat. I'm not sure if their AC was broken or if that's just how the restaurant but we ended up asking to be moved outside because it was a lot cooler outside with the slight breeze. We got the brussel sprouts and chicken karaage as appetizers, and my boyfriend got the miso ramen while I settled for the ebi niniku bowl. Both the brussel sprouts and karaage were burnt, the brussel sprouts were bitter and salty. The karaage had no flavor. The miso ramen was just standard and wasn't anything impressive. The ebi niniku - both the shrimp and rice were over cooked. The rice was mushy and had a off putting taste, almost like it was spoiled. The shrimp was rubbery and barely had any garlic flavor. Over, definitely a disappointing meal. The service was good, the waitress was very nice. TLDR; food wasn't good, the service was though. Would not be back. read more

The broth was good but the chicken tasted like boiled chicken, no seasoning no nothing. It was gross. I offered constructive feedback to our server and she said "ok" and walked away. The salmon chirashi was just ordinary and overpriced. The crab roll was tiny and 24 bucks. The pork gyozas were less than mediocre Terrible vibe throughout. If you want sushi, go elsewhere.
