Celebrated my birthday here and had the best time. Great vibes, amazing food, and even better company. Thanks to Izakaya Shu for making the night feel extra special. Can't wait to come back.

My boyfriend and I were so hungry after going to a Dodgers game and wanted to get some late night bites. Luckily we stumbled into this place and uncovered a hidden gem! The food here is so good and the price is so fair for the portion you get. We shared the shishito peppers, seafood noodle soup, yakitori, and kushikatsu. Our favorite was definitely the soup, so warming and the serrano pepper gives it the perfect hint of spice. The workers and owners here are so nice and friendly too. Love this spot so much we're definitely coming back to try some of the other things on the menu we were curious about!

Sky is the owner and a wonderful host!! The vibes were cozy and the food was immaculate. (Much of my photos were taken after having a bite or two.) A cozy and reasonably priced izakaya with an owner who actually cares about service. We will definitely be back with friends and recommend to anyone who wants tasty food and cozy vibes

Had the late night munchies and searched yelp for restaurants that are "open now" at 11:00pm. This was one of the first several recommended. The food, photos, and reviews were great and so this is where me, my husband, and best friend came to eat. Before I go into detail, WE TOTALLY RECOMMEND AND WE WILL DEFINITELY COME BACK SOON! There were a few groups inside the moment we walked in. Music was lively. Our host came by to take our order. We ordered (1) clam/mussel soup, (2) stir fried pork belly and kimchi, (3) chicken kaarage, (4) 3 scallop skewer and 3 sausage skewer. All of these were delicious but I do have to emphasize our love for the clam/mussel soup. It had a great kick/spice to it and had a very good amount of clams and mussels! Our host periodically checked in with us if everything is okay/how is everything tasting and has refilled our water jug 3x without us needing to ask. His customer service was great and so of course I would like to relay that comment over to him. After passing along the great customer service comment to our host, it turns out he is the owner of the restaurant! He was very appreciative. We learned from him that it is a family business and the restaurant opened 6 months ago. Overall, he is just very welcoming, humble, and attentive from the start and end of our stay there. We will be back!

Food's great and staff are nice. Still working on new menus and we got to try some of them. Finally an izakaya I can go to in ktown for second round! Must try their kushikatsu skewers

Chanced on this spot after looking for somewhere izakaya in Koreatown to try where we hadn't been before. It's a hole in the wall that's really cozy and the staff are all really friendly. Oddly enough, the dish we enjoyed the most was the honey yuzu cream cheese, which was something we hadn't seen or tried anywhere else before. It was sooo good, definitely need to order it if you like food that's sweet and salty. Our server recommended we try it with some crackers and it did not disappoint would love to come back here again!

We went to a new izakaya in k town for the 2nd round. We ordered some recommended menu from the sever, all the skewers and sashimis were in really nice quality. But the salmon carpaccio and halibut sushi were completely fine and good. The salmon carpaccio was really good paired with avocado, kiwi, and the perfect sauce -- every bite was a flavorful with nicely cold sake. Absolutely divine. Be honestly, the halibut carpaccio plating wasn't just beautiful as looks, but it was incredibly very fresh too. The crispy fried onion garnish added the perfect crunch and flavor, making it impossible to stop eating. Beyond the amazing food, the service was outstanding. The staff were so warm and welcoming, making us feel genuinely taken care of. It's not too far from where I live, so I'm already planning to make this my go-to spot every week.

    Salmon carpaccio I believe

Honestly was just looking for a quick bite with my girl but was BLOWN AWAY by the flavors and service from Izakaya Shu and my server Sky who was very lively, friendly and just provided amazing customer service. Had the best recommendation to end the night you can't go wrong with anything! The playlist is freaking amazing too! definitely coming back!!

Everything was so delicious!!! Hospitality was amazing will be back definitely, 10/10 would recommend!!

Sashimi were very delicious and high quality. )-/ thick cut and no weird fishy smell. Skewers were also very thick and way bigger than i expected. Love the beef tongue the most. The shrimp and cauliflower tempura basically taste the same (sweet and sour). Def disappointed at this bc we expected the typical tempura without being soaked in the red sauce. Agedashi tofu was also just ok. It was kinda soggy even though we ate it immediately. The wasabi is good though and parking is $8 in the personal lot (more expensive bc we paid with card). I give it 5 stars because: - The generous portion and yummy sashimi and skewers. - Service is also fast and the waitress serving us was very friendly! - We brought few slices of cakes and there is no cake fee. Even if don't like seabass, you must try this one! it's buttery, perfectly charred and melts in your mouth. The prime beef is equally impressive: tender, packed with rich umami flavor, and cooked to perfection. For a larger dish, you can't go wrong with either the sea bass or blue crab hot pot. It's so rich and comforting, the fish is always perfectly cooked, and it's more than enough food for two people. Be sure to order a side of seaweed and make your own hand rolls at the table. The kabocha salad is also unexpectedly delicious and pairs well with the other indulgent items in this order. They recently moved next door and they may be overbooking themselves so expect to wait quite a while- even if you have reservations.

And service was also not great - the server brought out a drink that we didn't order by mistake, told us we could have it on the house, but ended up charging us for it anyway. Had already left when we noticed it. Also told us cake fee was $10, but ended up charging us $20. Food-wise, very hit or miss. The unadon, hamburger steak, and curry udon were all really good, but the yakitori skewers tended to be disappointing. The Tsukune was dry, the Negima was quite bland. The Miso Black Cod was also quite overdone, became quite rubbery when served and also was cold. Overall, I would not come back again, or recommend it. Given the price point, I expected that the food and service left much to be desired.

The menu now leans much more toward fine dining, and the prices definitely reflect that. As someone who's more of a casual diner and really enjoyed the previous menu, this new direction just wasn't for me. The staff were very kind and took the time to explain all the changes, which I appreciated. However, we ordered about six dishes and were surprised at how small the portions were. On top of that, most of the items were unfortunately pretty bland. Sadly, I won't be returning, and I really miss the old menu.

It was as good as I remembered, and probably even better. I can't imagine letting another eight and a half years pass without going back. The only negative is that parking is either difficult or $15, which feels bad in a pretty quiet residential area. Better to take a car in any case, so you can enjoy the extensive selection of sakes. We shared a full-sized bottle, I forget which but I think it was a junmai daiginjo, and it was lovely. Tsubaki is such a nice, welcoming little izakaya. Service is great, the atmosphere warm and easy. You just want to sit back and drink at a leisurely pace. The food is excellent, with a robust menu of creative Japanese food. We shared everything, starting with a stellar kanpachi crudo with ume ponzu, shiso, sweet onion and habanero pickles, and furikake. My favorite dish of the night was the tsukune katsu. I love tsukune, the tare-glazed chicken meatballs you'll find in any yakitori place. This was my first time having them in katsu form, panko-fried and served over cabbage with Kewpie mayo and tonkatsu sauce. The chawanmushi was delicious, silky steamed egg custard topped with Dungeness crab, truffle salt, and mitsuba. Likewise the kinoko tempura, an array of maitake, shiitake, and enoki mushrooms fried light and crispy, with yuzu shichimi and tentsuyu for dipping. We got a skewer of bonchiri from the yakitori menu, delightfully chewy bites of charcoal-grilled jidori chicken tail. Finally, a plate of yakisoba, pan-fried noodles with house-cured Peads & Barnetts char siu, pickled green garlic, and cracklin. We got the hojicha parfait, and it was more or less my ideal dessert. Roasted green tea soft serve with sesame black sugar burnt miso and candied walnuts with cornflake dust. Cold, light, sweet. I could eat a whole one by myself pretty much any time. After nine years in business, Tsubaki feels like an Echo Park institution, and the kitchen is as strong as ever. This was a wonderful dinner, one I hope to repeat soon, with more sake, more yakitori, and more hojicha parfait.
