***2 1/2 stars*** I've driven past this place on 23 a gazillion times, and...there's a reason it's never occurred to me before now to stop in. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It honestly looks pretty shady/decrepit (though looks CAN be deceiving) and has an equally suspect hotel next to it that could easily find itself the centerpiece of a true crime doc.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But it WAS open on Jan 1, we needed a lunch spot after the First of the Year hike, and one chum in particular had a hibachi hankering. So off we went. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I'm trying to be as diplomatic as I can, but it's honestly in massive need of upgrades throughout the establishment. Beyond the outdated decor (the bar was ROUGH looking), it smelled like cleaning products in most areas, and that was pretty obviously because they decided to do their cleaning during normal business hours.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There were literal buckets and bottles of bleach on the floor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]When my chum and I went to use the restroom shortly after arriving, we couldn't immediately go in - the bathroom was temporarily shuttered for cleaning, despite the fact that the restaurant had opened within the hour. That flat-out shouldn't happen.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I don't know if the staffer in charge was late but this is basic upkeep that should be done before or after customers are on the premises. That's all to say the vibes aren't great, and some of that is easily fixable. I can't say we really built up an appetite navigating a bike path for an hour in the snow and ice, but we did get two apps to split - the chicken katsu at my request, and rock shrimp. The rock shrimp were very good; decent portion/large shrimp, but the katsu was a miss. This is the second time I've been burned by this particular dish, I think because I keep deciding it's going to be chicken katsu curry but without the curry it's a very, very dry, flavorless item. Both times this has happened, the chicken katsu was accompanied by a watery tonkatsu sauce that was overly sweet and not great. But again, this isn't the first time this has happened so this may not be an issue specific to Izumi - maybe this is just a crappy app? Anyway. If you're katsu curious, I would recommend only ordering it in the context of the curry. Despite initially eyeing up the chicken katsu option on the lunch menu (which I was told wasn't applicable for a holiday), I succumbed to peer pressure and joined the hibachi bandwagon, opting for the chicken. A few chums got steak, and I think at least one got shrimp. Honestly, the chicken is a miss and I'd avoid it if you can. It's super dry (at least they're consistent in that regard with the poultry), and the teriyaki they're using for it is super salty. Just not a good dish. I tried the steak, which was significantly better, as was the shrimp, which was my favorite. Very tasty. The star of the hibachi meal though was the fried rice and the noodles. I initially asked for white rice, thinking there'd be a ton of shizzle in the fried rice (like onions, peppers, etc.) but it was literally just rice and egg from what I could tell. The noodles were delicious and widely acclaimed in our party. So ultimately uneven but the hibachi had some highlights. I'd say the service was pretty decent. A lot of the hibachi experience comes with a bit of showmanship from the chef, by definition. I haven't been to a ton of hibachi places but the fellow we had was pleasant and...skilled at hurling zucchini into people's mouths? I guess that's an endorsement? We had tons of food and I don't recall any complaints about the meat prep or anything involving the actual cooking. I feel like I've seen "flashier" performances but it's certainly not something I care a ton about - I'm in it for the food and can watch an exciting portrayal on the Criterion Channel from the comfort of my home. When Susie said she wanted hibachi for her birthday we chose Izumi. It's been years since we have been here. We had a 7 pm reservation and were promptly seated at 7. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The other people at the table were very friendly and we enjoyed their company.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Naturally we all ordered hibachi. I had the filet and scallops. I order any steak I get extremely rare and I was a bit nervous but the chef cooked it perfectly. It was delicious. Sandra had the steak and duck. Also cooked perfectly and delicious. We didn't order any appetizers because the meal comes with plenty of food. We paid extra for the fried rice and glad we did. The noodles were delicious also. Yesterday, I witnessed what appeared to be a child choking on a piece of metal at this establishment. What was especially disappointing was overhearing the manager's response afterward. Rather than removing the family's bill given the seriousness of the situation, they offered only a $20 voucher for a future visit--which couldn't even be used that day. It was some of the worst customer service I've personally seen. To be fair, the chef handled the situation professionally and was very respectful throughout. I recall this place being better when I was younger -- I recently went back while visiting family a few weeks ago. He started off w/the familiar lighting of the grill w/the oil -- he ended up creating a gigantic fireball that seemed like it was going to explode in my son's face (who was just sitting around the grill, not leaning in or anything) -- he was terrified and never really recovered from that. The chef also was incredibly messy; he would spray the oil or soy sauce and it would literally go everywhere; on our plates, all over the outside of the grill, on some of our clothes, etc. And any time he lit a fire after that initial Chernobyl, my son screamed. That may have thrown him off the rest of the time, as he didn't do much after that. I thought they catch the shrimp in their hat, juggle the cooking tools, etc -- but I didn't see any of that. He did shoot a ton of sake in my family's mouths at the table -- that was funny, I guess. He also shot some water or something out of a ketchup squeeze bottle at my other son, who was enjoying it and dodged out of the way. The food is incredibly salty as it's doused in sauce, but I guess I expected that. You do get a huge portion and it is tasty, however. Also not cheap for a group -- with built in gratuity I think the bill ran up to almost $500. Either way -- probably would not come back with my kids at least. Just had dinner here with family of 5. After passing Izumi for years, decided to give it a try after reading that reviews were decent. We had a great time. The staff was attentive and personable. Harry, our chef was fantastic, same for Hiro, our waiter. Both really nice people. Excellent cooking and fun conversations. The food was very good, we all had a hibachi meal. There was attention to detail for my whole family's experience. My two year was able to enjoy the food and the experience! My sister, who was the birthday girl, also said she enjoyed everything for a great price! Service was very attentive and made sure we always had what we needed whether it was a napkin or a refill for our drink. We were very happy with everything! The only moment that would have made it better is that we shared it was my sisters birthday several times during our dinner and when it came time for our ice cream they just handed it my sister instead of singing her happy birthday which they did just moments to the table in front of us. The outside of this place looks sketchy! It shares a parking lot with a run down motel which is seriously off putting. I've been to this restaurant twice already and I've found that they are inconsistent. The first time I had a wonderful experience! The hostess was friendly, the chef was amazing and the food was scrumptious! The second time it was completely opposite. We felt like the chef rushed our food. It wasn't seasoned well or cooked properly which was a bit alarming. He also wasn't very friendly and hardly spoke a word to us. One little girl at our table tried several times to get his attention and he ignored her. After everything was on our plates, we asked for soy sauce because everything lacked flavor. He decided pour it on our food instead of just handing us the bottle. Izumi is set up like all of the other hibachi restaurants. Hibachi comes with salad, soup, your choice of meat, fried rice, noodles, vegetables and a scoop of ice cream. The portions are plentiful so we walked away with leftovers each time. We all ordered hibachi and our bill for a party of 5 was $234. They add 18% gratuity for parties of 4 or more so keep that in mind. You can make a reservation to help cut down on wait time. I went on a Saturday night around 8:30pm the first time, and 4:30pm the second. I didn't have a reservation and luckily I didn't have to wait at all for a table Had I reviewed this place after my first visit, I would've had all positive things to say. My family and I had a birthday party there recently. We had a party of 14, 8 adults and 6 children. First the food was delicious something for everyone, no one went away hungry. Next the chefs( so entertaining! ) waitresses and management t so attentive and fun. Never needed to ask for anything always anticipated what we needed. I planned my daughter's 16 birthday party at Izumi. The food was just ok. The chef forgot to put the ginger sauce out. After dinner the waitress asked if we wanted the cake to come out. I replied no since we just ate we needed time to relax & digest. No sooner did my daughter just about finish with her presents & out came the cake! No warning! Nothing! I had special candles I wanted to put on the cake, no one asked if I had brought my own candles or anything. Huge disappointment. I went to talk to the Maître d' (mngr.) he was not accommodating at all! In fact he told me they did nothing wrong! I guess he didn't learn in business that the customer is ALWAYS right. He could have at least tried to make it right given the fact this was a special milestone birthday. Terrible experience & I will not go back there ever again. THIS PLACE IS NOT GOOD. DO NOT GO HERE. From someone who ordered takeout, they forgot multiple items and then refused to refund me more than $2. As a broke college student, I took the $2, but it was so insulting. The ginger salad dressing is basically vinaigrette. The salad also has red onions in it, which is not normal. No; so so bad. The takeout was flavorless and awful. The sushi and sashimi was weirdly warm, slimy, and didn't even smell close to fresh. I tried a couple of the rolls and a little of the hibachi and everything screamed Danger. I've avoided this place since moving here over 6 years ago because it just doesn't look like a quality established but after reading the reviews I convinced myself to try it. No one is even close to finishing their food. I threw it out and ordered from a different option. We had a wonderful experience last night. We were early and they sat us right away. the waiter was top notch but the best was the chef. he went above and beyond as a hibachi chef. He engaged with everyone so nicely and kept up with my 4 years silly requests to squirt him with water over and over again. He had the patience of a saint dealing with my two kids but was always so sweet and nice. The manager came over and checked in with us throughout the night and made sure we had a great experience. This was my first visit here. It was wasn't a typical Hibachi place as it had many Japanese touches throughout. I loved the live koi ponds. The sushi bar and also the drink bar. They rang the drum announcing our arrival and we were seated at a hibachi table that was occupied by two others. Our drink order was taken as our dining companions tried to convince me to otter a "Zombie"! Clearly they had had more than one! Lol. A fun couple. They choices were more than I have seen at other hibachi restaurant. My dining companion and I chose the sukiyaki steak( top sirloin with teriyaki and a bit of soy sauce. White rice and a cup of hot green tea. We also had a YELP check in bonus of a free appetizer, we chose the veggie tempura - yum! Our teppenyaki chef (itamae) Harry came out confirmed all orders and was so much fun from the beginning. His teppenyaki skills were hot- onion volcano. He cooked up some grilled shrimp appys that everyone received. Next was the noodles flavored with soy sauce , butter and garlic-yummy! Next up was the main entree of sukiyaki steak, cooked just as ordered. The steak was very tender and juicy! Finally the sautéed broccoli veggie medley completed our cooked meal! So hard to give an accurate rating because the food was delicious but everything else was pretty bad . The wait time and service were sub par. Ok they were ridiculously busy. But we had a reservation. We were seated over an hour AFTER our reservation time. So either they do not know how to book times or they disregard the reservations. Parking was atrocious. Prices in the restaurant are higher than the menu online. Def high compared to other hibachis in the area but again the food was really good and huge portions. Our particular chef did not do any type of show or entertainment which was a little weird because all of the other chefs were quite entertaining. Our drinks were mostly ice and very little drink. With the equally good competition in the area not sure I would return. read more

Food and drinks are exquisite. Went there with a group of friends last night and can honestly say it's the best hibachi around. I had the chicken and shrimp hibachi combination and it was cooked to perfection. Our chef James was very talented, funny, and prepared food to die for. The wait staff was excellent and most importantly, their general manager Aqeel went above and beyond to provide 5 star service. We went for a birthday dinner and had the worst service for our party of 6. We had a server come and take drink and app orders and hibachi dinner order. That's where thr service stopped. Our table did not get soup and salad served to us, no one came to ask if we needed anything else - I'd like to mention that all the other tables around is had servers that came to check on them and had soup and salad brought to them. We had to ask our chef for sauces for the meal because no one served them until after the entire meal was served, and even then only served half of our party with them before leaving. When it was time for the bill, the other tables had bills brought to their tables and we had to go up to the bar to ask for our bill. We asked for an adjustment on the bill for the fact that the soup and salad was not served at all and that no one came to actually check on anything. The server said she would pack the soup and salad for us but we asked for the bill to be adjusted as we already were done with our meal and didn't want the food anymore. The server yelled at us and said that they were really busy, and mind you no one had raised their voice tk her at all but we're asking that they take into account the lack of service we received when everyone else seemed to be getting the experience they paid for. The manager was asked about an adjustment and she also refused saying that they were so busy and that the offer to pack the soup and salad was made and that was enough. We tried to explain that we just want to make sure that others didn't experience the same lack of care but the server walked away yelling at us. We ended up paying the bill and leaving but it was the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. I have been in the hospitality industry my whole life and would have fired any one of my staff for behaving in this defensive manner to a customer when in the wrong - needless to say, this place is absolutely not up to basic civil standards and we won't be patroning there again. read more
