It's been awhile since we've dined here-prior to Covid. Unfortunately, it's not as good as my memories. Service was subpar and was the greatest disappointment. No offering of water, no suggestion of horseradish, no to go container for the au jus. The soda refill was late as well as the meal check in after being served. Having been a server, I do expect servers have some intuition of needs throughout the meal. The table next to us had a missing appetizer and another table had to be moved because no one waited on them timely after being seated. Lastly, what happened to the delicious rolls served with the salad? It appears the best way to eat here now is with a "to go" order. They were set up quite nicely for that. We haven't been here since it switched to Redlands Grill, although it feels pretty similar to JA's. We came in around 2 pm, despite it being a slower time, our service was good. After being greeted by the host, she sat us in the bar area. I wish the restaurant as a whole had more natural lighting, but I guess the vibe at night is more of the dim lighting/ romantic type of place. I really enjoyed kicking off the meal with their Thai Margarita, which had tequila, St. Germaine, and fresh basil leaves. I was really hungry, so I got the grilled chicken salad and a loaded baked potato. For me baked potatoes are the ultimate comfort food, and theirs was perfectly baked. The skin had been seasoned with sea salt and olive oil and it was piping hot and soft. The grilled chicken salad was very chopped up, which was unique. The chicken is really thinly sliced and it comes out very tossed. The white wine vinaigrette dressing that it came with was really nice. An oversight that was my mistake, I forgot to ask for no black olives. Thankfully there weren't that many because I am not a fan. Despite being so hungry I couldn't eat all of my food. HORRIBLE experience, and this restaurant used to be our favorite. Our waitress was so nice, and that's about it for positives. We both started with caesar salads, that had insanely salty croutons (which those used to be our favorite part). Then, I got the supposedly "crispy" chicken tenders with fries and coleslaw, and my boyfriend got the steak and fries. My chicken was definitely NOT crispy, and I feel like Tyson frozen chicken strips would've tasted better. The fries on both of are plates were extremely well done, and were too hard to even eat with no flavor. My boyfriends steak, however, was the biggest flop. We had to send it back for being too fatty, and then we GOT AN EVEN FATTIER CUT OF STEAK! At this point we were just ready to leave. Definitely taking J Alexanders out of our rotation. read more

This has always been one of my many favorite restaurants. I'm thrilled they are now doing carry out due to COVID and hope they continue with this service. Their steak Maui and French fries are the best! I will say I'm disappointed that the price has gone up considerably and the portions have become smaller and now salads are no longer included with this price as they usually once did with all steaks. You have to pay extra for the salad and they also took away the incredibly delicious croissant that was included with the salads Taste of everything is still amazing just wish we weren't getting less and paying more. read more

Where do I begin??? My wife and I are in complete awe at the deliciousness that we just experienced. I ordered the chef special crab cakes with coleslaw and loaded baked potato. Mind blown. So much crab in a crispy exterior. The sides were equally delicious which is saying a lot. My wife ordered the New York strip and Mac and cheese. Once again..... my mind was as melted as the cheese in the Mac. Best steak we've ever tasted, perfectly cooked medium rare with herbal butter melting on top. The appletini my wife ordered also great. I've been here many many times. Service is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Multiple servers working together to get us everything we need. Food is great and fresh for the price point. It's not Jeff Ruby's, but still darn good at half the price. Employees even hold doors for customers. I've had the filet, salmon, and chicken sandwich. Mac and cheese is oven baked and great. I do not know how this place stays open. The manager came to our table and asked if everything was OK. When we gave kind input, she joked it off with a flip response. Because we were with four of our best friends, we had a good time laughing and talking ... but the food was sloppy, soup cold, meat tough and service poor. The server had a difficult time figuring out what was charged to who's bill- there were 3 couples. There was nothing pleasant about this experience - especially the unremarkable food. Definitely 5 stars. When I first got here I was just like meh, too expensive, but when I ordered my starter, spinach con queso I was absolutely amazed by the taste. It feels homemade and my taste buds smiled when I took the first bite. And then came the Grilled Salmon, I was mesmerized by how it looked when it came to me, I'm not usually a big fan of fish, but it tasted like heaven, the texture, taste and looks are just amazing. Bomb! As always! Me and some friends come here for brunch on Sunday. I'm a regular girl when it comes to my food so I just get the Belgian waffle with bacon. So tasty! The waffle is so soft and it doesn't get soggy when you drench it with their syrup! Not a fan of their mimosas because they put Cointreau in it but you can ask to not have it. I go with the Chandon Rosé split as my choice of beverage. If you aren't feeling brunch and like me want something small but meaty I suggest the cheesesteak egg rolls! Honey!!! They are so delicious! They come with a pesto based sauce on the side that is everything! The meat is covered in their homemade cheese sauce which is plus! I like real sauces not that canned junk. You will not regret it if you give these a try. I could eat these everyday. The staff is very accommodating and knowledgeable of the menu. My wife and I usually go here on our anniversary every year. I feel like every time we go here, you get less for your buck. You used to get croissants, then you used to get them with your salad now, and you don't even get them with your salad. The entree doesn't even come with a salad anymore, so add $8 for a side salad. And they got rid of their best dressing, champagne vinaigrette. This place has always been my favorite for 20 years. You could always count on good food and superb service. That is not the case now. Everything on the menu has increased in price. We had dinner at 2pm in the afternoon and the place was not busy. My friend ordered salmon and I had prime rib. A salad with your meal is extra. My prime rib was very dry and did not have the usual flavor I'm accustomed to. Our salads were fresh but my friend was specific that she wanted no cucumber or tomato yet it came with a lot of both on it. Mid meal we were attacked by fruit flies. We mentioned it to our waitress and she said management was aware of it but that it was "just that time of year." We ordered the Very Best Chocolate Cake and the cake was frozen! It is supposed to be warm. The waitress took it back and we received another VBCC served properly. Our bill $105 for the two of us. We tipped $20. We were there two hours. It was still not busy when we were ready to leave yet a server(not ours) came over to our table, snatched up our napkins, proceeded to reach over the table and took our drinks glasses that were not empty. She never spoke a word, not excuse me or may I take those glasses? She was extremely rude. Both of us were stunned by her behavior and the lack of professionalism. We left immediately. I was too angry to talk to the manager in that moment. I will not go back to J's/Redlands Grill because of that server's behavior. Bottom line? Food quality/value and servers are definitely not what they used to be. If I'm going to spend $100 for two people, I'll go where my business is appreciated. After moving away from Ohio I have missed this restaurant. So decided on this trip I would meet a friend for dinner at this old stomping ground. We ordered an appetizer of chips and three different dips. It was really good. For dinner I ordered the fillet mignon medallions over a bed of rice. Mixed vegetables came with the dinner as well as a salad. The salad was delicious. When I began eating the rice and steak however, I found it to be spicy hot. This was confusing to me because I did not order anything spicy hot. Really not enjoying this meal, I returned it and ordered a filet mignon with a baked potato. So much better! This place is the definition of hit or miss. Some of their food is amazing and some is garbage. Their Mac and cheese is some of the worst Mac I have ever had in my entire life! We had dinner on December 14. 2023. Following dinner my daughter discovered immediately that she left her purse containing medication she needed. We called the restaurant 10 minutes after we left and were told that we had to wait until following. Since we were 5 minutes away, we returned to restaurant and went to front glass door. Not too heavy. The Redlands salad is good. Lots of veggies and their blue cheese dressing is very good. I got the chef feature of two medallions. The crust on both was okay. Neither added to the steak and I could have gone without. The medallions were cooked perfectly though. My date got the ribeye Maui. He stated that the marinade was a little overwhelming. I have to say I am a fan again. They have made the transformation to Redlands Grill but it still has everything you loved about J's. The menu has something to offer everyone. I love the fact that they offer a burger with some integrity. All ground fresh daily, in house, with no fluff or fillers. They have an excellent wine selection and a nice cocktail list. We had a really odd experience at dinner here. For a very expensive meal, it was not on the level of service you would expect. Our server couldn't answer basic questions about the food on the menu and didn't know the different wine options/recommendations. When our cocktails arrived, he spilled about a fourth of the glass onto the table and didn't say anything about it or apologize. While we were eating our salads, they brought all of the food too, so we had to kind of throw the salads onto the food plates because it was paced so quickly and our table wasn't big enough for the plates. One of the meals was mostly cold (like the potatoes) and the prime rib was luke warm. Once we finished the meal the server just brought the check without seeing it there was more we wanted or engaging with us. It just overall was not an experience at the level of the cost of the meal, or on par with other high end steak houses in the area. So we had a reservation for 5:45 - we showed up 2/3 minutes beforehand and were told since we were early it would be a couple minutes. Not a big deal. Well, as it hit 5:50, and then 5:55, I got concerned. I asked the one hostess when we would be seated, and she was incredibly rude, telling me that they were seating reservations and I just needed to wait....as if my reservation time hadn't come and gone. 25 minutes after our reservation time, the woman I assume was the head hostess called for us and apologized, saying she thought we had already been seated. No further effort was meant to remedy not only the wait past our reservation time, but the rude treatment we got from the other hostess. Not the experience you want when you're about to spend $100+ on a meal. That being said, the food was delicious and the wait staff was incredibly attentive. Drinks took about 20 minutes after they were ordered; 3 of six drinks was a bottle of wine. Ordered dinner with salads. The salads were delivered and then within 3 minutes entrees begin being delivered maybe had time to have one bite of my salad. Of the six entrees ordered 3 show up then we waited at least 15 minutes before anyone showing up for us to ask about the other entrees. Never again. J. Alexander's has become a favorite for my boyfriend and I. Whether it be special occasions or a casual dinner, J. Alexander's is often suggested. We often like to switch things up, but when we come here we get the same thing every time because it is just too good! We always start with the spinach con queso. It is simply the BEST. I could eat it every day. Next the Redlands salad, phenomenal always. For dinner, steak and mashed potatoes. We always leave super full and very satisfied! If I had one complaint - sometimes the food timing is awkward. Super long wait for the appetizer, then not enough time with the salads before the entrees arrive. Not a reason for us not to return. This place is NOT what it used to be. The prime rib was super fatty and the prices aren't cheap. The music was so loud that the elderly person we had with us had to turn off their hearing aids so then we could not have any discussion with them during dinner. We requested raw horseradish sauce and she brought creamy and was off in a dash before we could say anything about it being incorrect. Two of the three of us were out of beverages before we were finished eating and she never offered us refills. We had to ask for those even though we were finished eating. There is no dress code apparently as the lady in the next booth came in wearing a sports bra type thing with her stomach showing and nothing over it. Had lunch here. Tried the ahi tuna burger which was a special. It was awful. Oversalted and loaded with sesame oil, I was actually crunching on salt bits when chewing the burger. Went to one of my favorite restaurants for lunch and decided to try something different Fried Shrimp dinner with fries and coleslaw. The shrimp were vice size and breaded perfectly. I had the steak rolls which are very good and the Redlands Salad with Cilantro vinaigrette which is the best I've every had. If they sold the vinaigrette I would eat salads everyday, its that good.
