This is the old roof, faded tile

This is the second roofing experience I've had with this company. They did my house when I first bought it 26 years ago and it's lasted till now. I reroofed down & took it down to the wood. Rubin, who ran the crew didn't impeccable job. Job site was incredibly clean and the crew was conscientious and accommodating. The entire job was done in three days and it's beautiful. ! Crew was clean, as quiet as could be but most of all super respectful and got the job done! Can't say enough good things!

New roof from neighbor's yard, Certainteed Presidential Solaris Country Gray TL

Our new roof from J and J is gorgeous and the process was excellent. View from the curb is mostly roof, and they guided us to a beautiful and durable total replacement for our 30+ year old roof, choosing not the cheapest, but definitely not the most expensive material: we picked Certainteed Presidential Solaris TL in Country Gray and the result is magnificent, check out the photos. The communication skills from J and J were exemplary. They have a very accessible-at-all-times boss, Matt, for big strategic questions; then a supervisor, in our case, Justin, who answers more specific questions and figured out the weird tiny details of putting a roof on our eccentric 76-year-old house; then a foreman, on the job all the time, Marco, who has the how-to knowledge and directs the crew and answered very local questions. All the workers are employees, not contractors; and J&J has all the liability insurance policies, etc. (a lot of formerly local roofers have been bought up by private equity and hollowed out - but not J and J, who are still the real thing, really owned and operated by Matt and his brother Mike.) They even have a weekly safety meeting. J and J had been doing repairs on our roof for 28 years (always a good job, at a low price) and last fall, this roof was obviously past its useful life. There were four layers on the old one, including shake at the bottom, that had to be torn off; then a new deck built; a waterproof layer; and finally, the new shingles. It was going to be a big job. Getting a roof is like getting a tattoo -- you want to do it right and do it once, because a do-over would be painful and expensive. Over the six months before the new roof we probably exchanged fifty emails with Matt Glass, a process that was extraordinarily helpful. Matt gave us guidance to drive around Glendale, Pasadena and Los Angeles and look at sample roofs in every material, in every color; it was during this run-up that we got a modern roofing education, courtesy of Matt. We looked at cheaper, functional asphalt shingle roofs; midrange "architectural" shingles; simulated shake and simulated stone made out of concrete and a kind of rubbery mudflap stuff; and so on. We drive a Honda and a Mazda - good-looking cars that will last forever with few repairs, and we wanted to same for the roof. The overlap of durability, beauty and cost guided us to the Certainteed Presidential architectural shingles. Solaris is a "cool roof" legal requirement in the City of LA; and then we paid a little more for the TL (triple laminate) just because it looks beautiful (no one was pushing TL on us, we just wanted it.) Tips for when you get a roof replacement: 1. look at and photograph as many sample roofs as you can, that helped us pick the perfect material. 2. Ask lots of questions. 3. demolition is the noisiest, messiest part but only lasts a day or two. Though everything was covered with plastic, roof dust still gets everywhere. Bring inside anything that you can. 4. coordinate with a termite guy - they can do their best work, quickly, when the roof is off! 5. On an old house there will be some small repairs from dry rot or just old wood - just let J & J do the fixes, they did great job for little money. Matt estimated eight days for demo, repair, deck construction, waterproof layer, four ventilation turbines and eight soffit vents, shingles, flashing, etc. and they hit the mark exactly.

The north side with the loose gables.

One of our neighbors used J and J roofing to replace their roof a couple of years ago so we decided to add them to the two other firms that were coming out for an estimate last November. Of the three companies, Joe from J and J did the most thorough inspection of the roof on our two storey Craftsman house. I'd asked the other two roofing companies what they would do if it happened to rain mid-job, which was a problem when we'd replaced another roof years ago. Joe was the only one with an acceptable answer ("cover the roof") and we knew we'd found the right place. We'd planned on hiring them after the rainy season was over but as it worked out, the extreme winds that fanned the Eaton Fire in January 2025 did considerable damage to both the house and the garage roofs, as well as some structural damage to the gables holding up the eaves on the north side, which complicated things We decided to go ahead and schedule the work. During the process, Matt Glass, one of the owners, was in constant contact which made the project go so more smoothly. His firm was even able to reinforce the section of the house with the gables as well as reattach what turned out to be a poorly added addition (with 8 layers of roofing!) that has been added sometime in the 30's. His workers were knowledgeable, professional and did a really good job of cleaning everything up when the work was complete. By the way, J and J Roofing is also mentioned on Pasadena Heritages list of recommended roofing contractors.

The spinning turban-like roof vent makes noise when very windy. How much to replace? How much to re-shape or clean and re-assemble? It may be as simple as a twig stuck in there. It's on an asphalt shingle roof. Do you do gutter cleaning? Thanks.

I bought my house in Sherman Oaks in 1997 and while I was out of town on work for a couple months…read moreshortly after moving in, El Nino hit. Fortunately, my garage (which was storing much of what I had that wasn't in the house) was the only thing that suffered damage, Unfortunately, most of my mementos were destroyed. I reroofed, and now almost 30 years later, with rumors are that El Nino is making a return visit, I thought (since we had suffered minor leaks during some of the recent rains) it was time to reroof, so I put Yelp to work to find me some people to interview. I picked five for the information I could glean, asking few questions, since I knew opening my mouth connected to a brain that knows little about roofing, would be a bad idea and also seeing if people were helpful with their explanations. Everyone (maybe except one) was personable enough for me to think I could work with them, but much of the information was kinda the same thing (although I noted some improvements in roofing since 97 that were useful to ask each about). The prices were more or less the same, and close enough that I knew I could find a point that would be roughly around the general price for them all, so it wasn't money. It was rapport and ultimately who gave me the greatest sense of trust. And. I learned, information that no one else told me. Roy, with Top Roofing was the ONLY one of the five that I saw who discussed the solar pool heating on my roof with me; each of the people I met with went on the roof. Not one other person mentioned it, and if you have solar panels on the roof - it's a consideration in doing the job. When I called the others who'd come to the house to say I'd made my choice and asked why I picked someone else I told them this - it was determinative that one person told me this was a job that needed to be done in addition to the roofing. He hooked me up with a solar heating company, he'd worked with before and I got on the phone with them and felt reasonably satisfied that between them and Roy it would get done on time, on budget. (It's not a small add-on to have them remove and reinstall the works, so if this affects you, be warned). Roy stayed in touch with me throughout - He came by and we spoke on phone daily. We had agreed that in the cost we he would completely replace and repaint a tongue-and-groove porch which was pretty rotted out) and aside from some permit forms I had to fill out, gave me a date of less than a week every date was kept. His crew was punctual, and so neat - the pool was covered, they cleaned up each of the five days they worked. Roy walked the yard with me before they started so I could make sure my gardener trimmed where he needed to, then walked it again, to tell me where we might need to keep trimming. He touched base with me every day, and when it was over gave me a video of the roof (both the main house and the garage were reroofed), and the porch which looked haggard now looks beautiful. I can't say enough about what a positive experience this was. And it looks really good. And since the last time I put on a roof, the tile now cools down the exterior which is good to have in an LA summer. The roof is up, the solar heating is back in operation. Let's go. A roof is an expensive proposition, and I think it's ok to know little if you hire someone you believe in (and, I'll admit, test out a little bit at the onset), who speaks to you in a way that is helpful and doesn't overwhelm you, but I think this was an incredibly positive experience in terms of labor, cleanliness, schedule and most importantly communication. I think that if you meet with a number of roofers, you will agree with me. I highly recommend...
