Their selection of Salami is awesome in their display case. We needed a little snack so we got a pack of Salami to go with crackers and cheese next door from Trader Joes. The salami wasn't dried out and it was very moist, flavorful with the peppercorn flakes. I didn't know that wine was used to ferment this among other things. It's nice to try a mix of meats without committing to a whole sausage. read more

I tell you these guys are outstanding with their customer service and their product. I purchased a Prime Rib for the fire department for Christmas dinner and had it seasoned by them. I came to pick it up and they were close. I didn't know what I was going to do now. As I am sitting in the parking lot the manager! Wonderful staff and service! We always get prime and choice meats here and never are we disappointed. The filets and bacon wrapped filets are bomb! And even the frozen marked down meats rock! Christmas and special occasions we splurge on meats, this past Christmas our prime rib was not the norm for this stellar place so I sheepishly came in recently to explain our disappointing prime rib dinner. The owner or manager was such a professional and credited our prime rib for future purchases! Like I said, never were we ever not 100% happy with their quality of meats. After dealing with the insanity of finding parking at Trader Joe's then shopping on top of that; I was wore out, hangry and in desperate need to some delicious bbq. Luckily J&R Natural Meats is located right next door so I popped in for a quick bite. This was my first time here and won't be my last! The tri-tip was cooked so perfectly it practically melted in my mouth, there's nothing worse then tough meat. They didn't over do it with the bbq sauce which was nice, they try and let the meat speak for itself, which it did perfectly. It's also a butcher shop where they have a ton of selections of different kind of meats and sausages, I picked up a pack of buffalo jalapeño links and sauce for my trip back home. The guy working the counter was so friendly and knowledgeable, he wasn't annoyed when I was asking him a ton of questions haha. I will definitely be back when I come to visit my family! read more

They have grass fed and grainfed options. Theyre a great group of guys, the type to remember your name and preferences. I'm just getting into my first J&R Nourish Box. Supermarket meat has become expensive and, frankly, the cuts are inferior and tasteless. Originally, I chose to get the monthly Nourish to better plan my month's meals and be assured that the meat would be a higher quality than the markets. I like that the meat is local and not factory raised. And, I am convinced that this assortment of meats is no more expensive than the supermarket. But sooo much better. Everything has been fabulous. My husband (who does not like pork) loved the pork chops. The Rib Eye was better than any restaurant steak I've had. The chicken actually had flavor! Now, I'm looking forward to cooking again. Where's the beef???? Duh! HERE! First off, awesome small town feel! Called to have 2 tri-tips ready and seasoned to go and with no questions asked, bam! They were ready with dry rub. Both vacuumed sealed to boot. BBQ'd these babies up and they were amazing!!! Also have had their thick cut bacon. You haven't had bacon until you've tried theirs. Worth every penny and it'll ruin it for you. You'll never want grocery store bacon or tri-tip again. Definitely will be back to try their Porter House and Rib-eyes! Holy cow! Pun intended, but seriously the meat here is the most tender and flavorful I have ever had. When I purchased my first tri-tip and placed it in the smoker, my jaw dropped. The meat melted in my mouth. Upon return I decided to purchase a brisket, and once more it was amazing. One sad day, I came in and they were out of tri tips, so I made the mistake of purchasing one from the supermarket. WHOA, let me tell you this made me appreciate the quality of J&R Natural Meats that much more. I will definitely just wait until the following day when a craving hits when J&R Meats can satisfy my need. Thank you to the guys at J&R for saving my Christmas dinner. I had picked up a prime rib roast at the end of a very busy day. Later that evening I realized the roast was almost twice thE amount of meat than I ordered, and losing sleep over the confrontation I might encounter with trying to exchange...I called the next morning and explained my delina, and the response was "just Come in and we will be happy to get you the roast you wanted". Finally I found a local butcher I can go to and ask for things and get it! Or just walk in and find things I didn't know I wanted! From sausages, lamb, chicken, bones, broth, jerky....all I need is here. Their hand made sasages are amazing, duck and blueberry, pork and peach, all kinds of amazing combos. And all of them huge and delicious. Not too spendy either! I go in here and ask for special cuts of meat or bones for stock and they always have either intelligent answers or just what I need. These guys will always ask to make suggestions, or offer tips and let you know about what they have in that's new and when your favorite thing will eb back. Love love love this place. read more

Selection was decent. Maybe a little picked over. I like to only make one stop, but them being out of 1-2 things is the reason for not being 5-Stars. Surperb, friendly service, amazing selection, and the bets tri-tip sandwich I've ever had. Visiting J&R for a tri-tip sandwich is a tradition now, and when I take Amtrak from Paso back to my home in the Bay Area, I enjoy my tri-tip even more as I look at me fellow travelers with their soggy, microwaved hot dogs and chips glancing enviously at me. Their sandwiches come with a soda too, so I am all set for a tasty meal. Definitely check them out. read more

First timers buying locally sourced meat from this business. Unfortunately, we went to the Templeton location to pick up a phone order. Staff at this location are unfriendly and somewhat arrogant. The person in front of me asked a question about preparation. The bearded guy (look in other comments) never said a word - handed her what I believe to be an instruction sheet on the prep.This guy is losing business. When I asked a question about meats - he didn't answer my question and made a snide remark. The entire vibe at this location is dysfunctional. Luckily, we later picked up our order at the Paso Robles location. Night & Day. Staff here were friendly, talkative and interested in promoting their products. Location was kind of out of the way, but worth it. Would rate higher for product - but experience dealing with the staff at Templeton was not the best. Never to be back - guaranteed. read more

My fiancé is a Templeton native. We visit every holiday and several other times a year. We had planned on getting products from this establishment, as her family has done previously. However, the bigotry and insular thinking exhibited by this establishment has prevented us from doing this. The day prior to thanksgiving in the afternoon( a time of generosity built into the fabric of the holiday) we were shopping at trader joes next door. Coming into the parking lot a family was asking for donations. We took notice of the family and then went into trader joes. As we were leaving, we saw an employee exiting from the store to discuss the family with the shopping center security. The employee stated that the family needed to be removed from the parking lot because this is "bull shit" and "I work for a living." Such an attitude prior to thanksgiving demonstrates that such an establishment is focused on reaping only self-serving rewards. It destroys the ideas of family, togetherness, and generosity that go back to the first thanksgiving. Further, self-reliance would have only killed the early settlers at Plymouth, however this establishment seems to think self-reliance is some how a great thing. It's a sad day when people so abuse others. Please, boycott this establishment as a testimony to humanity. read more

This is a second shop from the one in Paso and is right next door to Pier 46 near Trader Joes. Opened in 2012. We just moved to the area in March and this far exceeds anything we've experienced at any traditional butcher market. The variety in this shop is great and the fellow there (forgot his name, sorry) takes great pride in his work. He has given us great suggestions for grilling and preparing meals with their products. For example, they carry buffalo sausage and he recommended making a chili with it - which ended up being one of our new favorites at home. If they don't carry something you can ask for it... lot's of locally sourced stuff too, venison, lamb, and the regular stuff - nice freezer full of custom sausages. We also recently bought a meatloaf and meatballs we used with our own homemade pasta sauce. Delish. Fantastic local resource. Do not pass this place up. read more

Great little meat shop in Templeton. We bought bone in grass fed rib eye and their in-house hickory bacon. The rib-eye was cut perfectly with just a thin ribbon of fat along the edge that kept it juicy during cooking. The bacon was a good balance of meat and fat and the flavors were excellent - a little too salty for our tastes however we're fairly sensitive to salt. Will definitely return if in the area. read more

I'm a fan of J&R. Came in to buy some sausages as a gift and was impressed with the quality of the meat and the variety of cuts in the butcher case. Definitely opt for this over grocery store meat! I'm actually not a big carnivore and eat mostly veggies, so when I choose to eat meat I want it to be a special occasion! J&R products definitely fit that bill. I was disappointed, however, by the lack of sausage variety. The website lists all kinds of interesting flavors, but the sausages available were pretty standard, just meat and cheese combos. Hubby ordered the German sausage sandwich while waiting for me to window shop their other goodies. It was a WOW tasting morsel. She grilled up the sausage and bacon right there and with cheese and Dijon, he said it was a bursting flavorful lunch that made his day! I will start with this place isn't cheap. The value is in the quality of what they butcher and create. The grass fed hamburger is the finest most flavorful I have eaten. It's a fun place to shop because they have an incredible mixture of meat wild game etc. I never tried quail took it home grilled it. The quail was fantastic not gamey. They are also doing dry aged beef. It's 29$ a pound for Ribeye and New York. If you know anything about dry aging it's an extremely expensive and difficult process. They will cut it the way you want it. Take your time look around you can find hidden gems of meat in the freezer. Try something new. read more

On one hand, the quality of the product is amazing. This is a great source for grass-fed beef, house-made sausage, local meats, and responsibly-raised specialty items like goat and lamb. We are talking seriously delicious and high quality with a very good value. And two out of the three main people who work there are very friendly. Crystal and the son of the owner have answered questions patiently, marinated specific cuts, and even cut large tri-tips in half (as long as I bought both pieces). That is, 66% of the service has been exemplary. On the other hand, the taller tattooed fellow has been so rude and hostile to me that I am reluctant to go in when he's working there. I have entered with the intention of buying meat for my family for an entire month and left with only $30 worth of meat because he was seriously horrible to me. A good friend went in yesterday to buy something to slow-cook and he angrily told her, "I don't have anything like that here!" Sadly, I can't really refer this business to friends on account of this type of service. Better to pay higher prices at New Frontiers than have your IQ questioned by the meat gestapo. read more

We stopped here on our way down to Santa Barbara on a Sunday and they were closed but we knew we'd stop on our way back north. Glad we did as we picked up a quart of their housemade grass-fed beef chili which had a wonderful thick texture with chunks of steak too. It hit the spot.
