Great meats - but a little on the pricier side. We picked up a special occasion steak, 3 of the Irish sausages and a pound of bacon. The quality and flavor of everything was amazing. Honestly, probably the best bacon I have ever had, and even at $11 for a pound, I'll most definitely be back for more. I also really enjoyed the sausages. I don't have a grill yet, but pan fried and steamed. Awesome flavor and texture. Customer service was friendly and helpful. I was teetering between 4 and 5 stars because of the price point, but quality sometimes = $$$ and I want to support my local businesses. read more

Situation: no smoked meat on pickup--I was advised to call a day in advance to order beef and pork ribs to be smoked. On the date of pickup, I was given packaged raw beef and pork ribs. My rotisserie chicken order went through and I went home with 2 for the price of 1. I needed to cater my dinner entrees elsewhere. Positives: good tasting chicken; wish I could remark an evaluation for the smoked meats. read more

Wow. What a find! Passing through Paso on our way north and grateful to have found this place via the Yelp community. We had sandwiches (a tri-tip and a pastrami) and they were awesome. Amazing selection of freshly made sausages, locally produced honey, etc. Already making plans to stop by on our way home later this week. Skip the fast food chains, support a local business. I came to J&R meats for some sausage, and they have an excellent selection! Huge shout out to Brandon, who helped me find the ones I was looking for. He was very sweet, and helpful. All the staff who work there are more than willing to help you and offer a smile. Don't buy here they are dishonest bought half a cow and he has me meet him on the side of the road and then only delivers 119 of the 200 minimum pounds I payed for. Stuffed the bottom of the boxes with junk meat very dishonest. Took money at 5.50 a pound cut weight. Then shows up claiming hanging weight leaving me shorted 70 lbs. Go with a reputable source. First the good news, the service at the store couldn't have been better. The lady at the counter was so helpful. However, after I took a bite out of the sausage I discovered a very long hair inside the sausage. As the saying goes "if there's smoke there's fire". If the hygiene at this establishment is so poor that hair gets in the raw meat and then encased in sausage, what else is astray over there? Get it together guys, if you're gonna run a business that requires extremely high standards when it comes to cleanliness and hygiene, you gotta live up to those standards. Stopped by while on vacation in the area a week ago. Our rental had a grill and I wanted a nice lamb steak (or whatever else looked good, but my head was stuck on lamb). They had a great selection and happened to have a few freshly butchered cuts of lamb. The butcher answered all my questions about which cut was best for the grill (all of them). I settled on a couple arm cuts that I would not have found where I normally buy lamb (back in Chicago). They turned out fantastic. On a side note- my wife and I went next door to Trader Joes and several minutes later realized we didn't have ice to keep our purchases cold the rest of the day while we were wine tasting. I went back to J&R and asked for some ice to keep the lamb cold. I was given two frozen cool packs that look sturdy enough for a few more uses. My wife and I travel through this area once or twice every few years and I will definitely stop back. read more

Been bringing deer and wild boar here for butchering for several years. All have been processed and packaged very well and as requested. They use good tasting seasonings for sausage, especially the Bratwurst! The chili is very good as well. We've used 4 other butcher shops in the past with less than desirable results so we're sticking with Jim at J&R. read more

The people are good and pretty easy to work with which is why I gave 3 stars. They charge over twice what national average and are the most expensive packer in America. The quality of the packing is below average as there are chronic breaks in the vacuum seals and we have found large pieces of plastic in our sausage. If you are already driving to Fresno for the harvest use a butcher out there at $1.10/lb for cut and wrap on hogs or $.80 on beef instead of $1.80 and walking in to see they are selling meat for less then you pay I processing costs and excuses on why the product they gave you is not right. They depend on over charging the people giving charitable donations at the fairs, other wise the people who are trying to make a living pay their bills. read more

Be careful with this business, after seeing some other reviews with people saying they didn't get what they were expecting or the meat was old. Use caution. I made a large order here in 2014, I noticed several labels looked strange, I pulled them back to discover that new labels were placed over old labels that were from a year before. Yes, meat I purchase saying it was from 2014 was labeled originally in 2013. If they were up front about this, it wouldn't have been so upsetting. But how am I supposed to know if the product is what it says? Is it even really grass fed beef? I took my order back and would never recommend doing business here. read more

The best butchery in the Central Coast area, and one of my all time favorite places to get high-quality meats and highly-trained staff who know the craft and art of butchery. They have AMAZING hotdogs - they sell them with or without casings, depending on your preference. I can no longer have a Hebrew National hotdog, or any other type of hotdog, because J&R has ruined me - I'm in love with theirs only! I'm used to big-city upscale butcher departments in fancy grocery stores, and I lived abroad where the butchers still own their own shops and take great pride in what they do. J & R Natural Meats (Templeton location near Trader Joe's) definitely can stand on its own, even against the "big city" expectations I often have. In fact, it is among the best butcheries I've ever shopped at - the butcher is very knowledgeable, skilled and clearly takes pride in his high-quality work. Don't mistake his serious demeanor for unfriendliness - he might be a person of few words, but when he does have something to share, it is always helpful and en pointe. The very friendly, and personable gentleman behind the counter offered me tastes of a wide variety of their products. They have several types of smoked bacon they create, and it is amazing. They may have some of the best meats to be purchased over the counter but I'll never take any wild game there for processing again. Took in front & hind qtr of a deer. Requested that hind qtr be made into as many steaks as possible and split rest between sausage & hamburger. Got home & discovered that other than a bunch of puny leg steaks there weren't any steaks. It was all burger & non-link sausage. Will take elsewhere in future. I have the review above a few days ago. However, even though I'm not happy about the lack of steaks, I must say the sausage tastes great. read more

I love this location so much better than the one in Templeton. First of all, I don't eat meat unless it is grass fed, or local grain fed. This is one of the few places I know of where i can find it. They have a long reputation of being the local butcher of locally hunted game animals, and a nice selection of sausages. Unfortunately, the guy running the Templeton store is crazy as fuck, and this location doesn't sell the Beverly's free range rotisserie chickens, but you can get them in San Luis at Whole Foods (formerly New Frontiers). I got a great filet mignon roast for Valentine's day for $23. Such a deal compared to $20 something a steak (and previously frozen) at Hearst Ranch. read more

Apparently my review was reported because it addressed "employment issues". My issues are not with employment. I want people to know that the product they receive is not what you pay for and I am saying this as a customer. I've purchased sausage, chicken, seasoned tri tip, sandwiches and a number of other items and all were in satisfying. The seasoned tri tip was old and sour with seasonings as an attempt to cover the age. The sausage was mostly fat with foul meat trim and made me sick every time I ate it. I urge you to keep your butchering needs focused on perhaps a well known friend or even a local grocery store. read more

Friendly enough people. I had a pig made into teriyaki sticks. I've been having sticks made at other butchers for years and the ones here had absolutely no taste. Not a hint of teriyaki. I'm going to throw these in a pressure cooker with BBQ sauce and treat them like those little wieners and give the rest away to friends and colleagues. read more

Love this place! I used to come here all the time a few years ago because I loved their venison cranberry sausage. A little disappointed that they don't make it quite as often but when I get some more time I will definitely check and see if they have if.
