I could see why my father chooses to come here for projects. The availability of lumber here is great. I joined my father on this shopping stop. There is parking in front and some space within the gates. We opted to parking in the back for easier loading. We were greeted by an employee as we walked around making sure we were finding everything ok. We found what we were looking for and got our order ticket and headed inside the building to pay. Inside the building you can find some supplies such as wood sealant, nuts and bolts etc.. As you near the register you will find there are markings for social distancing. All employees are wearing masks. The employee at the register was quite friendly and helpful too. I would definitely return here with or without dad. This place was great! I'm a licensed contractor, but my speciality is hardscape/masonry. I took on a job requiring some speciality hardwood decking (ipe wood) and got referred here by a landscape architect buddy. J&W didn't disappoint. Noah helped me and answered all my questions and got me the right product super easy. To me, it was like speaking a different language discussing wood/lumber materials versus concrete and block, but these guys were pros and made it easy. J&W Lumber in San Marcos is the best! Nick is the main guy that was helping me, and you can tell he truly cares about his job and has outstanding customer service. I went in later in the day to select some clear cedar boards for a horizontal privacy fence/screen. Nick took the time to go through each board with me to make sure they were straight and in perfect condition. He didn't make me feel rushed at all, and I am truly impressed by his attention to detail! Millwork is typically something that can take up to a few days, but after telling him I really wanted to get started on my project over the weekend he cut them to size on the spot. While Nick was cutting the boards, Noah checked in with me to see if I needed help with anything else and also had great customer service skills! J&W Lumber does a great job overall. I would highly recommend them for your next significant building materials purchase. I first consulted with wood guru Michael Callahan in San Marcos initially to discuss my project after we had our house painted. Michael is a veteran wood guy. He directed me to Robert Lockhart at the San Marcos yard. Robert hooked me up with a great material calked Alumiwood for topping off my patio cover. I will never have to paint again. Robert took his time with me carefully explaining features and things to look out for. Very helpful to have someone like Robert show me the proper hardware to use as well. My carpenter Jeff Haag made many trips over to JW as our project evolved to include an IPE Brazilian hardwood wall with redwood to enclose and embellish my front porch with an arch also. Again Robert flipped boards with us and made sure we were happy with our purchase. He helped us pick out some awesome hardware for the pillars and fence also. Robert also had discussions with me about the Penofin oil product that we put on the wood along with warnings about do'd and don't when using this highly flammable product. There were a few returns we had to do and no issues with that. I have bumped into Robert and we are still talking about this job. Just a real good buying experience with J&W Lumber in San Marcos. I walked into this business with nothing but a photo to base my project off of. As soon as I walked in, I was welcomed and helped immediately by Noah. Not only was he patient with trying to figure out what I was looking for but he took the time to explain all of my options and how to get the look of a fence I was looking for. Lemme start by saying that I've been doing construction since I was a boy and took over my company when I was 32 and I'm now 46. Most of what I know is construction based. High end residential. I've been to every type of home improvement place and lumber yard under the sun but never had I had the customer service that I had at J@W today. The manager Robert was so helpful and on point. When I got the message and headed home, the delivery truck had unloaded and was leaving. I waived down the driver Tim, and he was kind enough to stop and help me place the lumber on to my driveway. I drove a long way to get a look at their lumber, very impressive to say the least. When they say they have what you need for your "decking project" they're not kidding. Excellent redwood selection, all sizes and excellent quality. Cedar, yep they've got it, even Alaskan Yellow Cedar! Not many places carry any of that in So. Cal. It was exactly what I'd been searching for! The young man that assisted me was great, we looked through several pieces, he rejected many feeling they weren't good enough for what I was building. I appreciated his efforts to get me the best possible lumber. Staff in the office were also great, good attitude and friendly. We recently decided to add a deck to our backyard. Neither one of us had experienced or had any knowledge on material choices especially Trex. Rick, a fairly new employee, went out of his way to help us understand Trex and its quality and uses. All materials were delivered in a timely manner. Bill Reilly was the contractor that built the deck. He came in under budget and on time with quality results. I needed 1x4x8 redwood boards but I could not find them at Home Depot, my go-to place. I Googled lumber and found this well-stocked lumberyard, which also passed the Better Business Bureau test and has a high Yelp rating. The young counter clerk was friendly and helpful, touring the yard and showing me both rough cut and smooth cut 1x4x8, which I didn't know existed. After the clerk offered recommendations and I chose two boards, the young man carried the boards, which wasn't really necessary. Needing one more item, I asked the clerk for something to stalk a drooping and young Plumeria tree, which was actually more a nursery question. We continued touring the yard, looking at possible material, while the young man carried the two long boards without complaining. With his advice, we settled on 1 3/8 x 1 3/8 x 6 redwood, which he also carried. The prices are reasonable. Overall, I'm very surprised by the young man's advice and help at this small business, disappearing qualities, in a world of expanding fast-paced and unfriendly big box stores. read more
