Grateful to have found Dr Johnson when my son was having anxiety at 5 years old. He was able to create space in his mouth for his tongue to fit and his teeth to grow, creating a better functioning swallow and breathing. This stopped his body from going into fight or flight. With more space in his mouth, his teeth grew in straight, never needing braces. With my second son, got him a retainer early on, which he o my wore to bed, also avoided braces. They still see him today 2x year for cleanings. Never pushed xrays when we didn't want them. Told us when it was time. Worked with all our holistic needs. Super kind and honest. read more

We have been served by Dr. Johnson and his team of dental hygienists and Myofacial therapist for for the last 14 years. I cannot say enough of his expertise, kindness, and professionalism him and his entire team provide. I have recommend him for a 2nd opinion every time I hear moms coming from their dentists exasperated by how cavities they find in their children for him to find it be incorrectly diagnosed. Dr. Johnson is very thorough and a wonderful bedside manner to kids of all ages (as well as adults). We appreciate his wholistic approached to straightening teeth using the ALF method for our daughter. Not only does she have a gorgeous smile but knowing her air passages are aligned to avoid snoring/sleep apnea later in life is such a bonus! His dental hygienists are the best most thorough and least invasive I have experienced. Since we have moved 9 hours north, we still come visit them for our checkup and cleanings...that is how much we value what we have in Dr. Johnson and his team! read more

I am a former federal civil servant and federal contractor who is now disabled. I write this review with full knowledge of the Consumer Review Fairness Act (CRFA) and the California (CA) Anti-SLAPP Law. Agree with negative reviews, and wonder if the "5 star reviews" are simply fake. If I could give NO STARS, to "Bruce Johnson Dental DDS" I would. I too lost thousands of dollars ($18,702.21), 5 years of wasted time, and have nothing but pain and suffering to show for it. And I too feel like an idiot for trusting my health to johnson. I now live with debilitating TMJ caused tinnitus, and have had to contend with horrific TMJ pain that has ruined my social life; any chances of returning back to any form of work, and any chance of having a family. This means that eating has been difficult, and so has sleep as the tinnitus is debilitating, and LOUD in the quiet of night. All squarely caused by johnson's negligence. A formal and comprehensive complaint has been filed with the Dental Board of California (dbc.ca.gov) against johnson. Before moving on, IF you think this cannot happen to you or your family? You're VERY WRONG. I hold a BA in Criminal Justice, and a Masters in Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. So I've years of formal education, and despite this, I was wronged by Johnson. The disability I mentioned? I have a severe brain injury. This means that amongst many medical problems, I suffer from memory deficiencies, Parkinson's Disease, and a host of other spinal problems. Because of CA laws, my Dental Board complaint is not available to the general public. This must change! Suing bad medical providers ESPECIALLY dentists is difficult in CA because of a 1975 law passed that places a $250,000 cap on noneconomic damages in medical malpractice lawsuits. So what hope does the average citizen with either a high school diploma or a few years of college have? I encourage Californian's to Vote YES for the Fairness For Injured Patients Act to be on the November ballot 2022. The Fairness Act is ballot initiative to increase California's $250,000 cap on noneconomic damages in medical malpractice lawsuits based on changes in inflation since 1975 and allow judges and juries to award damages above the cap for catastrophic injuries. I first met Bruce Johnson on March 7, 2017 for him to treat a bilateral TMJ dislocation caused by a 2012 hit and run auto impact. He was referred to me because I was given the understanding that he would use the Advanced Lightwire Functional (ALF) dental appliance. I quickly signed on with him, not understanding that he did NOT use ALF, but sold me a device called the "PATend". It was never explained to me what the difference between ALF and PATend were, nor if PATend was the brainchild of the inventor of ALF, a Dr. Nordstrom. I now believe it was a classic bait and switch. 5 years later, on November 2021 I learned my upper bite was completely misaligned by 2MM. I had no clue until I consulted with a friend who is a dentist in Europe. I immediately sought 3 more dental opinions, and they all agreed; My top bite was misaligned by 2MM, and the bottom jaw was not level by 3.8MM. Take a look at the picture of my mouth. The graphical line shows where the top buckteeth should be positioned. This is what "dr johnson" did to me. Now I cannot speak for the guy in terms of a repairing a cavity, a root canal, or working with my kid as I haven't one. But what I can only say that he is in fact a General Dentist who is practicing orthodontics, and he butchered my bite which has had a devastating impact on my life. So consult an ear nose doctor and an audiologist you say? I DID. Met with a audiologist at KECK USC, a second private practitioner, and an Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgeon who ordered an MRI of my ear canals and found nothing wrong. A dentist and an oral surgeon both opinioned that the tinnitus, jaw pain and hearing loss is caused by my TMJ joint impacted by dental misalignment. Solution? 6-12 months to undo johnsons work, and hope for the best. Cost estimate? $20,000 to $25,000 and plenty of more pain. read more

I don't usually write reviews but when I saw a number of poor reviews it made me want to say that we've been getting great service and results from Dr. Johnson's office for over 10 years now. My child used one of Dr. Johnson's appliances (alternative to braces) and it worked well. We've also received good care for cavities and hygienist visits. The staff have been good to us and we haven't been "upsold" on services or misquoted prices. The orthodontic appliance is a big investment of money and time--as are braces. I'm glad we found him and we drive from the Valley because we get good care. I don't know what to make of some of the comments, it hasn't been our experience at all. read more

Dr. Johnson has been our family dentist for over 15 years... maybe longer. We make the trek from Whittier to Montrose because he is just that good. He is extremely professional and quite personable. He has a very gentle way. My husband hated going to the dentist prior to finding Dr. Johnson; not anymore! I have had various dental treatments and I appreciate his non invasive approach when possible. His staff are always helpful and cheerful. The hygienists are the best. I always leave feeling that my money was well spent on cleanings and treatments. I give Dr. Johnson and his staff my highest recommendation. read more

I went to Dr. Johnson forTMJ treatment. In 2013-14 I wore his patented nighttime appliance at night. What happened was that my jaws somehow re-adjusted and my teeth did not touch or bite down together anymore. I mean I had a totally gone bite. I was not warned that this could happen because of my bad jaws. My chiropractor and Dr. Johnson told me that my jaw was in a better place. Maybe....but then what? I then had to pay for and wear an appliance to chew because I my teeth did not even meet properly enough to chew! He started orthodontic treatment in 2015. This would have to be done to get the teeth back to a bite. But the plastic contraption (splint covering top and bottom teeth) he had me wear to move the teeth caused a lot of pain and problems. One major problem was that I had 2 implants on one side of the mouth and because those teeth couldn't move, only one side shifted and the appliance kept breaking. I can't explain the complexity of this device and it was terrible. Because it was so complicated I could chew only very soft foods and sometimes I couldn't chew at all. There were so many complications. Now I think I'm an idiot because I kept going back and going back to get the thing fixed, paying more and more for him to adjust and fix it and then, after so many visits, terribly frustrated but still trying to keep going with the treatment, I was shocked when I got a letter (on New Years' Eve) FIRING ME AS HIS PATIENT. Yet, when I added up how much I had spent - it added up to around $9,000! And I had nothing to show for it. I immediately found an orthodontist specializing in TMJ and got braces. It has taken about 1 1/2 years after wasting one year with Dr. Johnson. Now my teeth are almost touching and my bite is so much better (and I can even chew! Wonder of wonders. What a thing to be thankful for) BUT I WILL NEED ~ $25,000 WORTH OF DENTAL WORK TO GET MY TEETH CORRECTLY IN PLACE. Half of my teeth need crowns. Precious money that could have been used toward the new braces which cost around $10,000 and the upcoming dental work was wasted on a treatment that added up to nothing. read more

Dr Johnson's the best orthodontist around. We shopped many places and we went with Dr Johnson because he was about function over looks of orthodontics. Also his appliance was the least intrusive. My daughter had terrible teeth with no space for her adult teeth. After three years, her teeth looks beautiful and her mouth has enough space for all her teeth and she's able to sleep better and chew better. My other daughter had an underbite and after a year it's already been fixed. He's listens to our concerns and is very kind. Highly recommend him. If he took our insurance, I'd go to him for dental work. So glad we found him! read more

Dr. Johnson has been my family's dentist for over 5 years and we drive over 45 minutes to go see him! I was shocked when I saw some of the other reviews and felt compelled to share my experience with Dr. Johnson and his staff. Whenever I arrive, I am greeted nicely and never have to wait for very long. Similarly, I really trust his opinion on invasive operations and surgeries. I recently went to another dentist last summer and he insisted that I needed a root canal. I ultimately requested that I get a filling instead of a root canal and the filling has been great since then and has no issues. When I went back to Dr. Johnson after being unhappy with the other dentist, Dr. Johnson and staff were surprised that the other dentist had even suggested the root canal. Overall, I find Dr. Johnson to be trustworthy and genuine, kind and respectful. I find myself coming back here every time even though the drive is super long! read more

I am sad to have to post this review, but the doctor and his staff are so unprofessional, I find it to be unavoidable. I went to the Dr's office for a second opinion on a issue of mal-aligned bite. He is touted as an expert and took a look at my mouth and said he had a better option to take care of my problem and avoid any surgery. I was very excited about this news and explained I had limited funds but wanted to take advantage of his appliance. He told me that he could do less diagnostic work and not do a sleep guard to lower my cost for just the single appliance to widen my palette. He personally quoted my the fee which was to be $1000.00 for the appliance $163 for the pictures and molds of my teeth and about $350 for diagnostic imaging he said was not optional, a cat scan at another office. Sadly, he did not put this in writing except as a note scrawled to himself that said $1500.00. So, I drive the distance to his office, get this $323 CatScan that is not covered by insurance, and return to him to get started. When I return, all is fine, but all of a sudden he requests $1500 from me, not the $1000, but $1500, making the total $2000. I knew this was not what he had told me or verbally agreed to. I refused this and explained it was not acceptable to raise the cost at that point. He said that was what he had told me, based solely off his scrawl to himself of $1500. The man is old, confused, and should not be taking care of giving patients costs if he cannot remember them or uphold them. So first it was, he never said that, then when I suggested he should make estimates in writing, he said he never does because he does not know the full cost until he sees the diagnostics. Changing his tune at that point, yet the $1500 he asked for was never because of any change in the diagnostics- it's what he said he always was charging me- plus the $63 to him and the cat scan. So I was out the $320+ dollars for this cat-scan, and getting no treatment for my problem he said he could solve. Dealing with him was very unfortunate, as he was unprofessional and refused to compromise. In speaking with his staff, they said this was not uncommon as they agreed he could be confused, confusing and forgetful. I was told by people that had referred me that other people had this same problem with Dr. Johnson. Just because he is a "brilliant" dental appliance maker and creator doesn't mean he can be a jerk, lie and be unprofessional. It does mean he didn't care about my money. A friend of mine knowing how long I had been waiting for help with my bite, said they would just pay the $500 he was asking over the original amount, because this dr.'s ego and my lack of funds & wanting him to do the right thing, should not mean my lack of care. Dr. Johnson refused to treat me. Even with me agreeing to pay the new amount he requested. He refused even though he knows he is the only dr that has this appliance that he claimed could correct my bite that causes me daily pain. He stated to let him know if he could assist me in some other way, and I called his assistant to see if there were any other doctors that used or could order his appliance- and never got a return call. This office and doctor are unprofessional and unethical- I would avoid at all costs. He did return my funds for the impressions he took, but I am still out the $320+ for catscans and without the help I could really use. AVOID. read more

My acupuncturist recommended Dr. Johnson for my TND (trigeminal nerve disorder) and back then, there was a lot of confusing money talk during my visit there - it was also a leap into the unknown which I did not trust because it involved thousands of dollars and the numbers kept changing - with no guaranteed result for TND. Then I didn't have a problem with TMJ. I was considering a re-visit because my jaw is now "off" but reading these reviews, I wouldn't visit this office again. I'd give no stars if possible. I went to Bruce Johnson to consult on my TMJ. He spent about 15 min total (and that's a generous estimate) never once looked in my mouth or touched my teeth. He tried to sell me a $6,000+ treatment including a CAT scan at another office and then charged me $160 for the consultation. He then billed my insurance describing it as a "second opinion" not a consultation. My insurance only paid $12. Since I'd paid the entire amount to this dentist I should've been reimbursed the $12. Never heard a word from them. I think this place is nothing but a money grab, most the staff was supercilious, as was Johnson. Basically, he got paid for a treatment suggestion he could've had his office manager give me over the phone - since he never actually examined me. I eventually spent $850 with Dr. Pine in Anaheim for a simple, but unique, mouth brace that has significantly improved my TMJ. My TMJ is severe and will require physical therapy as well, but I'm no longer in pain and my jaw isn't locking. Johnson is a shyster. read more

I had been going to Dr Johnson's office for awhile but my last visit was the last time. I had gone for a routine cleaning and xrays and at that time I was told I had a cavity and would have to schedule another visit to come in for the filling. I was told the total cost to me for the filling would be $35.00. When I arrived in the office for the appointment I was given a paper to sign stating the cost would be $45.00. I questioned the difference in money but the office worker who gave me the paperwork said she didn't know but that would be the final cost. After the work was completed and I tried to pay I was told the total was $85.00. I stated that I signed paperwork that said the total would be $45.00. At that point the billing person was brought in stating that it may be $85.00 or more depending on what my insurance would pay. The billing person then went on to say that these were all estimates. This was never said to me before. I was then told that I owed them over $100 for the last visit that was a teeth cleaning. I never even wanted that cleaning appointment but I had been told that my insurance covered cleaning 2 times per year. This all seems highly unethical and you can bet I will not be going back to that office. read more

The staff of this office is very unprofessional ! I expect other people to be professional no matter who they are , especially when they charge you so much money ! Here is my story : I called more than 1 month ago to the office and I spoke with Gina manager of the front desk ; I booked an appointment with Dr Gerardo and Dr Johnson on the same day and I was suppost to get some documentation to fill up before the appointment ! I ve never get this documentation and I had to call other 2 times to ask explanation why they didn t get it ! Last time I called 1 week before the appointment I asked again about the documentation and then I confirmed time and day of the appointment but I was shocked when Gina told me they never booked me for me the appointment with Dr Gerardo because She sad I m suppost to call another number and do it bymyself because they are very busy to do it. I asked why they never mention that before ! I was very dissapoint because I waited more that 1 month to get both doctors together and they didn t care to make this happen they just care you do the visit with dr johnson because it s the way they make money ! I am writing an updated review because now I have been a patient of Dr. Johnson for 7 years instead of 2 years. The best thing about this office is their abundant resources and amazing team of doctors, therapists, chiropractor and consultants. I knew when I started my treatment that it would be a difficult journey because I am SUPER sensitive to, well, everything it seems! What I appreciate most about this doctor is the fact that he is still willing to treat my severe TMJ case and make things better for me. It has not been easy to go through my treatment and I am sure we both did not expect the obstacles and dead ends that I have gone through in trying to fix my jaw, nonetheless, I appreciate not being dismissed as a patient even when he has tried everything he can with little results. I appreciate Dr. Johnson being humble enough and intelligent enough to know when he needs to ask for help. Dr. Johnson's colleague was able to figure out what Dr. Johnson was stuck on regarding my case and I feel so much better now (it's like a 180!) and I am happy I trusted Dr. Johnson's team of doctors he works with. The staff always tries to accommodate my visits to fit my schedule and to get me in for a same day visit if it is urgent. I know this isn't always easy because they are a very busy office. I have never come across any of them being rude though. I am very grateful to them and will continue to be a patient as long as Dr. Johnson remains in practice :) I would recommend people to see him although that means he might get so busy I won't be able to see him! hahaha! read more

I feel I must write this review. I was referred to Dr. Johnson by a parent friend. In our family we have always done things in a more natural/ holistic way, so I was opened to and liked his approach. What he said seemed to make sense and he seemed confident and knowledgeable. So more than two, actually closer to three, years ago our daughter began the orthodontic treatment that Dr. Johnson recommended. Fast forward to present day, we spent literally thousands of dollars in that time and had VERY little progress. When my child became frustrated with how long it was taking for very little change, I would ask him how long he felt it would be until her teeth were done or at least close to done. His answers would always be vague or he would just smile and shrug. Each case is different I know. But the method he was using with our child would have taken many more years to move teeth just to get them to the point of being ready for braces! We finally decided to go and have a consultation with another orthodontist. He was very kind and thorough and actually had answers and a clear plan. He was also, in a professional way, apologetic for what our previous orthodontist, Dr. Johnson, was trying to do and stated that it was a totally ineffective treatment for her case. My child should be almost done with braces and feeling good about her smile. Instead she is self conscience and embarrassed to smile and will be dealing with wearing braces though most of her high school years instead of getting them off during her freshman year like most of her peers. That is even more upsetting than the large amount of money we spent to get practically no where. We are now starting over again with a new orthodontist. So incredibly frustrating! read more
