I know this is a large chain store. I know my review won't change them. Yet, I'm compelled to inform shoppers About their shocking return policy. The staff at Copley Place in Back Bay Boston said they ONLY accept returns with the receipt! Otherwise, they won't even give you store credit for items that are BRAND NEW with THEIR TAGS. The return policy on their website claims they will accept returns without receipt, Even after 60 days, in exchange for store credit. Still, the staff at my location refused my prompt return. The Deal: don't shop for gifts here, unless you want to be tacky and give them the receipt with the gift. Better yet, just don't shop here at all. read more

Yes, this store is special, no it is not a regular J Crew store, You have to find it (it is in Copley Place, actually both stores are) but this store is specifically for men. They only sell Men's clothing so ladies ... sorry! The atmosphere of the store is very unique, antique but at the same time this refreshed modernism on a taste of the old. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. It's nice that they own the clothes so sometimes they can tell you how the fit, wear and wash will be like. They are pretty knowledgeable on the line and can tell you about unique designs or styles coming out as well. I love that they collaborate with many others manufacturers to come out with exclusive designs. I like this store quite a bit and recommend a visit. read more

Confession: I troll J. Crew for sales. The quality of the sales at this J. Crew location varies wildly. I've gone in and scored deep discounts with three walls' worth of merchandise to choose from, and I've stopped in to find exactly zero sale items. In some ways, the variability makes the hunt more fun. I dislike the men's side of this J. Crew, since it is incredibly small. I always feel like I'm in someone's way. I also feel awkward browsing, since the tight quarters mean the salespeople are basically assisting me whether I want them to or not. I've found the sales staff generally helpful. They are less overbearing here than at other J. Crew locations, which I prefer, but usually easy to find when I do need something. read more

An entire store dedicated to the "Ludlow" suiting line of J Crew. Vintage. Trendy. Fashionable. American. There's no end to the host of words that describe the Ludlow, which not only changed the brand, but men's wear in general. At around $650~, the Ludlow suit is quite possibly the best suit for its price and affordability. In terms of quality, they've partnered with European and Japanese mills for their fabric, and their cut is impeccably tailored. Having a relatively small frame, its hard to find a suit that fits my body's contour. As soon as I put on the Ludlow, I knew I was walking out of the store with it. It is form-fitting, without being restricting. They carry shirts, ties, shoes, etc. Its the attention to detail that separates J Crew from the rest. But dont take my word for it, see for yourself. Go in, try on a suit, and be amazed at a fashion marvel. OK enough about the suit, more on the store itself: The staff are extremely helpful and patient (and not to mention stylish). They know what they're talking about. I was overwhelmed by the many different fabrics they offer for the suiting, but they were happy to explain the differences. I've had to come back a few times due to quality issues on an expensive item that I purchased here last month. To make a long story short, if only because a bad review of this location won't affect any person, at any time, in any location, in any way, the people who work here are rude and think they work on a reality show. Today I had 4 employees go out of their way to ignore me, and I clearly needed help. And though it is close to Christmas, it certainly was not a madhouse or a zoo or anything. It looked like a pretty normal day at 11:45 on a week day. I made eye contact with 2 employees, clearly needing help to get my item that they had repaired for me (For the 2nd time in 1 month, because it was poorly constructed), and they were talking to one another about what they did the day before, and what they were going to do after work, and they clearly had no interest in helping me, one of those annoying pesky customers. I can't stand the whole princess, tennis-playing, ladies who lunch vibe here, but I do like their skirts - like the olive green python print mini I just ordered today. This is one of my favorite J.Crew stores because it has a great display for men's shirts. There's a rack of shirts running half the length of the back wall with a shirt in every pattern in the mix. The service is also slightly more professional than the J.Crew in your average mall. That said, the prices at J.Crew have been rising steadily, yet quality has not seemed to keep pace. I still love their stuff, but I'm not sure it's worth Ralph Lauren-level markup. Also, the sale section at this store is relatively small. It's not like the one at the North Shore mall where there's an whole separate room full of sale stuff. And if you're a student, definitely bring your student I.D. and ask for the student discount. read more

I pretty much live here. Some weeks I might stop by twice. And I've been going to this location regularly ever since I was a first year at Northeastern so Loreto, one of the sales associates, has been with me since then and knows how ridic I am. The staff at this J. Crew is particularly amazing. They will bend over backwards to help you and give you honest advice or critique but also won't be overbearing. They're very friendly and relaxed as well. One thing to keep in mind is that you get a student discount or a teacher discount of 15% if you have a school id. Also, if you have one associate who helps you out a lot (Loreto for me) you can sign up with them and then they can email you about sales, etc. And for prices, J. Crew can be really affordable if you watch for the sales. I have gotten a pair of cords for $13, Tshirts for under 10, etc. etc. Though I admit I have paid full price before but if you are willing to shop for sales and keep an eye out the sales can be phenomenal. And I have stuff that still looks good and I get compliments on and its from 5 years ago. read more

As much as I love J Crew I have always been turned off by their location in the Copley mall. Today's experience heightened my dislike for this location. I typically make a beeline to the reasonably priced sale rack. Today was no exception. I found a sweater I'd been eying and decided I should try it on. I went to the dressing room and found one was empty. So I started to go in (while looking around for one of the sales associates to confirm it was open). Finally an associate appeared and told me that someone else was ahead of me. I apologized. No big deal. What irritated me and caused me to leave the store without making a purchase, was that the associate then proceeded to tell me another person was ahead of me. Seriously?! There was no line. I have no idea what kind of queue she was keeping, but as a supposed 'valued card holder' I think I deserved a little better respect/treatment. At that point I decided to forget the whole thing. So my fiance and I were planning on buying our suits for us and both wedding parties here. I stopped in a few months ago to discuss with a sales rep and see if they did a bulk ordering discount or anything that would make the cost of 13 suits any cheaper. The sales rep informed me that there is no discount unless you open a J. Crew Card, but followed by informing me they have a twice yearly suiting sale and that we could open a J. Crew card and use that for the suits gaining an additional 20% off the sale price. We waited for the suiting sale and had all our wedding party members go in before to be fitted so once the sale started we were ready to go. It comes time for the sale and we call the store and are ready to place the order when this sales rep tells us that we can't use the 20% J. Crew card discount on the sale. Now I'm 2 months away from the wedding and am scrambling to find a proper suit that fits how we planned. I will likely never shop here again and am very annoyed that we were mis-informed in one way or another. If you have a wedding and want a good suit at a decent price go anywhere else. read more

I will preface this by stating that I'm a frequent J Crew customer. In my last town, it was the only acceptable store in town and I got accustomed to not having to tailor pants since theirs are cut to fit women with some junk in the trunk. I came to this store several years ago while visiting Boston because a button on my new coat fell off. They were very considerate and sewed it up then but I'm guessing they have new staff. Today, I went in my usual winter uniform: J Crew Lady Day doublecloth coat, J Crew cable sweater and J Crew pants. Mistreating obviously loyal customers is a big mistake. I went there today to look for pants. It is the first time I've ever been to a J Crew without being promptly greeted. More than 10 minutes after arriving, one of the associates looked away from her hanging long enough to say "hi"/"hey" very quickly. I was picking things out. None of the many staff members offered to get a dressing room started for me which is standard operating procedure at every other J Crew I've been to. Of course, carrying all this stuff, I realize that I don't really need much of it so I hang them back up. Lost revenue right there. I still had pants that I actually needed though. I flagged an associate down who directs me to a line with one person in it. Another associate clears a dressing room for the patron in front of me and walks away. "Hi"/"hey" girl who is the only one of the people on the floor actually busying herself then mentions that the other person standing in front of the fitting room with clothes in hand (me) would also probably like a fitting room. I just left the clothes and walked right over to Banana Republic. Those were nice pants, but there is no way I'm going to shop at a store with such craptastic customer service. **EDIT** So I went to the Cambridgeside one and they didn't have the same pants, so I foolishly return to the same B.S. except I have to basically hunt one sales associate down and I guess due to his gender and the lack of un-brain dead female associates, I got a men's fitting room. I got a bunch of pants to try on. I heard someone else get offered water and someone came to see how things were going. I did not. I spend a lot at J Crew but after these last two experiences with J Crew and now having many department stores available, I am quite possibly done with the company once the last of my gift cards is used up. read more

Subscribe to their email list (they force you to anyway), and when the sales are announced on their web site (they have a cycle of 20% off on their sale section online every couple of weeks), then go to the store and go directly to their sale rack. If they're doin 20% on their sale stuff online, I've found that they usually do 25% off in the stores... so you get a better discount and don't have to pay shipping. I recently came to the J. Crew at Copley for wedding dress shopping at their bridal suite. To be honest, I was pretty guarded about the experience because I had heard that J. Crew wedding shops were not full-service bridal salons. While this is absolutely true, I actually loved my J. Crew bridal experience... and found my dress!! So here are the main things to know if you're going to dress shop at J. Crew: 1) The bridal suite won't have every dress available to try on. 2) If you fall in love with a dress online, you should actually purchase it and bring it to the store. 3) You can try on whatever dresses you've purchased online, and then RETURN IN STORE whatever you don't want!!! (It's actually really easy. You bring the return slip from your mail order and give it to them up front, and they refund to your credit card). 4) The system is a bit of a swap and barter system. Brides have appointments all week, and are bringing in dresses to try on, return, and/or exchange. So beyond what you bring in, there will be other dresses to try on. But which dresses are available really depends on the week, and the various dresses that have been returned by other brides (for any reason from wrong size to wrong dress). 5) If they don't happen to have the dress you want or your size, you still end up ordering it from their online catalogue in store, and they ship it to your house. 6) You are responsible for your own cleaning and tailoring. So to make a long story short: I actually love the J. Crew bridal set-up. I didn't realize that brides were purchasing 2-3 dresses online and bringing them in. But I, too, had purchased a dress online that I liked, but wasn't sure that I loved. They ended up having another 5 dresses available that I wanted to try on, and after trying all of them (including the one I purchased online), I ended up falling in LOVE with one of the gowns that another bride had returned. I thus exchanged the gown I brought for the gown I loved, and ta da! I said yes to the dress!! Ultimately, I think most brides can relate when I say that SO MANY bridal salons I have visited are full of large, gaudy, and overly-extravagant gowns. Moreover, wedding gowns can get SO pricy so fast these days. (As if any dress that's worn for ONE DAY could be worth the price of a new car!?!?). J. Crew gowns are gorgeous, simple, elegant, well-made, and affordable. This system provides a way to try them on, even though the bridal line is still mostly online only. (I even got 30% off my dress because of an online sale). Sure, it's not perfect and a *little* extra leg work... but let's be real. Once you have the dress, we all know the rest is cake. read more

The men's store is WONDERFUL. It's a little crowded, and I did have to wait for a fitting room, but it was a Saturday, so that's not too shocking. What was really amazing was how nice the employees were. I'm a gay woman who frequently wears men's clothing, and I usually get suspicious stares when I step into the men's section, so I was pretty nervous to go into an entire store of men's clothing because I couldn't run back over to the women's section if it got weird. I was in the store for just a few seconds, looking at a shirt that was up pretty high (I'm 5'5", so these manly heights were not so great for me), and a sales associate came over right away and asked if I needed a size. A few minutes later in a different part of the store, a different employee asked if I was finding everything all right. You can't imagine how out of the ordinary this is! Usually they ignore me, but at this store, they were so helpful and nonchalant about the fact that I was there! I tried my clothes on amidst the stares of the male customers and their female companions and left the fitting room with the shirt I liked and a few I didn't. Right away, the first guy offered to take some things I wasn't keeping. Then I walked over to the register and met the third sales associate, who rang me up. She complimented my shirt and we got to talking about the patterns in the store. So basically, either someone at J. Crew did a training on customers shopping in the "wrong" section or these people were just naturally awesome. Either way, 5 stars for J. Crew Men's Shop! read more

My husband and I visited the J. Crew Men's Store in August to purchase the suit he wore at our September wedding (this was before the Ludlow shop had opened). We had a good experience shopping & got great advice from Justin Senni, the manager. The sleeves of the suit jacket needed to be adjusted, so we left it there to be sent to the tailor and the altered jacket arrived at our apartment in NH within a week. However, as my husband was getting dressed on our wedding day, he found that the security tag on his Ludlow Classic suit pants had not been removed. It had to be wrenched out of the pants by one of his groomsmen, leaving holes on both sides of the lateral seam of the right leg. The week after our wedding, I called Justin to ask whether the pants could be replaced, which he was willing to do. I sent them to the store (at our expense) with our information. Justin called me upon receiving the pants to suggest that the seam be taken in to hide the hole, rather than replacing the pants, which I didn't agree too. My husband spoke with a different employee later in the day and confirmed his request for the new pair of pants -- he did not want a slim fit and liked the leg width as it was when he had purchased the pants. However, a week or so later, he received the original pants with both legs taken in from the knee down, making the formerly well-fitted pants look oddly tapered. I doubt he will be wearing these pants regularly, as he had hoped to do, meaning his one wearing will have been with visible holes on our big day. In sum: poor attention to detail, poor customer service. read more

I had 3 employees constantly ask and answer questions as I was trying to find pants that would fit right since I am a bit shorter and it's difficult to find the right fit. the main employee who helped me was Ahn (I hope I'm spelling it right, sorry if it's incorrect!) he helped me find the right pants and help me get them tailored and sent for hemming and it's going to be shipped to my house this week. JCrew can always be counted on for high quality staples for your wardrobe from T-shirts to haberdashery shirts to cute flats and accessories. I agree that JCrew can be quite pricey, but you definitely don't sacrifice quality here like you would elsewhere. Becky is among the great staff here and everyone is very helpful and accommodating. If you are quick enough you can snag some great sale items here too (without trekking to the Wrentham factory outlet). This location can get a bit crowded on weekends, but it's roomy enough that you are not on top of other patrons. JCrew Men's shop is across the way and much smaller, so, sorry guys, this might not be the best place to shop. Online is a better bet! read more

They are extremely attentive and somehow find a way to up sell stuff to me every time (no other clothing store has ever succeeded at this with me!). Lured by a J. Crew email, screaming in caps about an online 3-day INSIDER SALE (20% off purchases over $150 by 11:59pm that night), I went to their Copley Place store to size their "Wool harbor peacoat." The store was reasonably crowded on a Wednesday night, as if shoppers were dutifully returning to the mall for the Christmas season and doing their part to revive the economy. I find it amusing that Michelle Obama wears J. Crew because it's a "reasonably priced." Reasonable is in the eye of the beholder. The peacoat was well made, nice long sleeves, and the sale color was probably perfect for me ("barely peach"), but the dressing room was so hot (despite the bottled water from the sales clerk), and my ambivalence so high, I knew I wouldn't rush home to spend $135.99. (Full disclosure: I'd bought a Patagonia Outlet down jacket four months ago, so wasn't in dire need of peacoat.) More browsing. A "fan placket perfect shirt" (on sale online for $49.99) in a color I loved: navy or "wild blackberry." Incredibly soft silk/cotton blend perfect for a sweltering dressing room, but that J. Crew wrinkled shirt look baffles me. Great that you don't have to iron. Not great the messy impression you give. I'd steam that crinkled placket and probably ruin the silk component of the fabric. Next up, the full price "textured jersey streamers tee" ($36.50) for wearing under winter sweaters, in another color I loved: a warm light gray that turns out to be "lavender." Strange length for sleeves and disappointing "texture," a rough cotton that didn't feel special or worth full price. But worth buying if it goes on sale. And then an ombre silk scarf, reduced to $20. A neutral color scheme new for me: light gray in the middle, dark gray at the ends. Didn't want to bring it home to try out with my wardrobe, because I already had three items I'm trying out, and I don't want to have too many at one time. Restraint rears its head. So I passed. I had had a pretty negative experience at Ludlow when making a return, and wrote a review about it accordingly. I was then contacted by the store manager, who mostly made up for it. Without going into too much detail, she was professional and accommodating, and restored my willingness to shop at J.Crew. All issues of customer service aside, I probably won't be shopping at Ludlow again, simply because the two things I got there both turned out to be badly made, despite the inflated price point. It's easy to be impressed by the presentation at Ludlow and the marketing behind it, but it's definitely overpriced, and no better made than anything in the main J.Crew store. I like the J Crew men's shop quite a bit, in Copley Place. I generally walk in there, in my Gap attire, and they don't hold it against me. They are intuitive as far as knowing when to be helpful, and when to leave you alone. Of course, their washed button down's are THE best feeling & fit shirt, you will ever purchase. The Khaki's are exceptional as well, though they might be going overboard with all the "slim" fits. "Classic" was slim enough, at least for me. Was waiting in line, nothing major, and out of nowhere, Becky appeared from a back room, to ring me up. Talk about service! How'd she even see there was a line? Becky was nice, but had that slightly stressed aura that all retail manager's have. I'm guessing she is the manager.
