WTF JUST HAPPENED TO ME. I have never felt this way after a haircut. It's the equivalent of being rejected from a job that you wanted really bad. Just that gut wrenching, sick-to-your-stomach feeling. I sit down on the chair and he seems to be having trouble running a comb through my hair so I ask if I should go wash my hair (he has a sign that asks you to wash your hair if it's tangled or thick which mine is neither). He tells me it's too late to wash my hair and starts cutting with absolutely no water. I have NO idea what this senile man is telling me because of how thick his accent is. Anyway I convey to him I want a four on the sides and a trim on top. He uses a four on the clipper to cut my sides which is fine, then he just starts going YOLO at my hair on the top. He grabs the size nine clippers and goes at my head as if he's mowing the lawn, no thought process just efficiency. Already I'm scared and regretting coming here. THEN HE GRABS THE SCISSORS AND STARTS CUTTING AT RANDOM. Total random. He doesn't go for a certain length or anything, he's just cutting in random places on my head. I swear I could have been more accurate at cutting my hair if I gave myself a haircut without a mirror and with my eyes closed. Then he asks about my sideburns. Oh the sideburns.... I tell him to cut it very little, which he does. THEN HE STARTS SHAVING HALF MY BEARD. I had a scruff going and this guy just starts buzzing down half my beard. So I'm sitting here writing this review with a half-scruff, half-buzzed beard (which I will post a picture of) and I am furious. I get home and lo and behold my hair is completely uneven. Parts of my hair are half-an-inch longer than other parts some are half-an-inch shorter with no pattern whatsoever. This guy is trash. I have never in my life had a worse haircut. EVER. J Cut Barber is a barber shop located in Northridge in a strip mall filled with Asian restaurants. 5*****? Are you kidding me? Well, I sit down in the chair, and the first thing the barber asks me is "What number do you want?" Really? What number? You're the barber, you tell me. I don't know what buzzer length my hair is. If I did, I wouldn't be in here looking for a haircut. If the only thing you know how to use is a buzzer, what am I paying you for? Haven't you ever heard of scissors? Unfortunately, I did not listen to the voice inside my head telling me to "get out!" I told the barber my hair gets a little curly, and I just wanted it cleaned up a bit. He didn't seem to understand anything I said to him. As predicted by his opening question, he hardly used a scissors at all. The haircut wasn't terrible, but it wasn't sharp or clean looking either. It definitely looked amateurish and frizzy. If you get a scissors cut, you will notice that the hair is layered, and has nice sharp edges. It usually looks better for a lot longer. The buzzer, in contrast, looks sloppy. For $10, it looked ok for only a couple of days and was not worth it. The Verdict: cheap, as in you get what you pay for. Well, less than, actually. Better pull out the "number 9" and buzz it yourself. read more

This guy is great. I have been to him a few times now and I have never seen another Caucasian in the establishment. He still does a great job of cutting my hair, and although he doesn't speak very much English, he always gets the gist of what I ask for and seems like a pretty chill guy. Great result, super cheap, I mean $10 + tip! AND really nice guy. The earlier you go the better it is for the wait. I went there around noon and as soon as I entered J told me I would have to wait 25 min. I didn't mind since there is a TV and Transformers was on. When he started doing my haircut he put the Korea soccer game, so everytime there was a big action he would stop cutting because he got excited haha. Great deal, really professional! My go to barber in the valley. I used to go out to Chinatown to get my hair cut but gas gets expensive and Chinatown gets too crowded. Glad I found J in Northridge. $12 is a little bit more expensive but I can live with that. J is good as long as you don't want anything too crazy with your hair. My haircut is pretty simple and he's already remembered me after just a handful of visits. Between 5-10 mins and I'm out the door. I normally go in the morning before the other places in the plaza open to avoid traffic and parking situations. He has a couple couches for you to wait in, couple magazines on a coffee table, a tv on the wall, the whole shingdig. If your hair is oily or styled up he has a sink and towels to wash your hair before the hair cut. Before he had a single seat but now he expanded and has 3 seats for hair cuts. Each seat is infront of a small tv that plays the same thing as the bigger TV. After the haircut he has a vacuum in the ceiling that hangs down to suck up all the clippings on your face and shirt. Good place. Recommended as long as you know what you want (and numbers). read more

Ive been coming here for about 5-6 years and cannot find any other barber better than the one found at J Cuts. The barber is very friendly and listens to your suggestions in how you want your hair done. Whether its from wanting a simple fade to even a comb over look, J Cuts can give you the look you want. There is only 1 barber, however, he is very fast and efficient. If the wait is a problem, its no big deal as the place has a nice flat screen TV with a great sound system to help make the waiting swing by quickly. I would recommend this place over any barber because of the cheap price, great experience, easy waiting time, and great location. read more

This place seemed good and cozy with a tv in front of you to watch while you get a haircut. But the one and only barber there, I asked him for a MID bald fade. And this is what i got. Its a high fade and the fade has long hairs that werent cut. As soon as I got home I was able to see the whole haircut and it was a bad haircut. Uneven fade and the fade looks like a rollercoaster. I know how to explain my haircut to barbers so not sure how he messed it up. I wish I was able to go get my money back so I dont recomend this guy. He is more about quantity of haircuts then quality. read more

Been going to J for about 5 years now. He's been great and really takes the time to make sure your cut is perfect. He's very friendly and attentive to your style and cut. He works solo so sometimes the wait can be a bit long since he's so popular. He usually has a movie on his big screen with surround sound to pass the time. With the quality and price he's worth the wait. I use to go to a professional salon and paid way more for the same style haircut. Give J a try and see the difference. He put a bald spot on my sideburn, then told me it was due to bed head and the way my hair was laying, as he proceeded to try to blend it in to fix it. I don't understand it's just a haircut, I'm sure he cuts so many heads that he didn't even realized it, but don't tell me some BS like its the way my hair is laying that's why it's looks bald! read more

I like it here, the guy really listens when you tell him what kind of haircut you want. He DOES ask for what length you want the blades to be, so make sure you know what you want BEFORE you come in. 3 letters, OMG! I moved to Northridge from Oakland for college and I needed to find a new barber fast! I came upon J Cut and boy was I BLOWN AWAY at what J did for me! I aksed for a taper fade and he got it spot on! I always have a nice convo with him even though he doesn't speak english very well. He knows what he's doing and what your looking for. He isn't distracted and even suggests things here and there. I've been going to J ever since I moved to Northridge which is maybe 4 months, and I have no plans on finding any other barber! J cuts hair fast and more importantly well. This is your friendly and fast Korean barbershop in the Valley. I have short, fine hair and he did a great job using the clippers and scissors. Ask or tell J which clipper size you want; otherwise, he might choose for you. Negatives: He doesn't speak English that well, but this did not bother me because if you are patient and willing to listen he will listen to your needs. Also, he doesn't offer you a mirror to look at the haircut from the front, sides, and back like most barbers do after they finish cutting your hair. There are signs inside the store saying please come with wet hair. This is because the clippers catch wet hair better than dry hair. I'm not sure about that since I came in with dry hair and my haircut came out great. Note: Saturday hours are from 8am to 5pm and Sunday hours are only from 1 to 4pm. My brother always comes to this salon to get his hair "setup" and by this I mean clean cut. This salon is really unique in that it is like a mom and pop shop and feels very home-y.. At any rate, the wait time is not long at all and walk-ins are more than welcome. On the staff i believe it is the owner and his wife, one is a barber and the other a cosmetologist so they have the best of both worlds going on! He was agitated if you didn't select the clippers for the entire cut and he usually did it in just a few minutes.
