History first. 13 years ago I purchased an engagement ring for my finance (now wife). Mr. Pitcher…read more(the owner) was very helpful, nice, and enjoyable to work with. He helped me select a diamond and the setting that was perfect for me. At that time I would have had nothing but positive things to say about Grand Haven Jewelry. Fast forward to March 2010. 13 years have passed and my wife's diamond ring could use the prongs dressed/replaced. And my wedding band could use being made 1/2 size or so larger. So we brought the rings to Grand Haven Jewelry. Mr. Pitcher and his brother looked at the rings and quoted me no more than $40 for the diamond prong replacements and no more than $50 for the increase in size on my wedding band. I was told shouldn't take more than 2 days. Well, three days passed and no phone call. So I called and was told neither were complete. OK. No problem. I can wait a couple more days. Two more days pass and I get a voicemail saying the wedding band cannot be re sized in the store. So I called back and asked why not. Woman had no explanation but would find out and call me back. The next day I receive a call saying both rings were complete. Hmmm... I asked that the woman check to be sure based on the call the day prior. She said she'd call back. The next day I receive a call back saying that no the men's wedding band was not complete and would need to be sent away. Oh, and the woman's ring will be $51. Huh? I was told no more than $40. I was transferred to Mr. Pitcher who only offered defenses. No apology for miscommunication other than the price I was quoted was wrong and only applied to diamonds with 4 prongs not 6 prongs. Fine. I can eat $11. That's not the end of the world. It's how I was treated that is frustrating. And 1.5 weeks later still no estimate on how much to re size the mans wedding band. Other than we'll send it away and see. But certainly more than $50. After pushing I finally was able to get Mr. Pitcher to admit it would be closer to $100 and how long the ring would be away was unknown. No thank you Grand Haven Jewelry company. Your after purchase service leaves a lot to be desired. Poor communication too. No apology? You've lost a customer I'm afraid. Why tell a customer up front in confidence that service can easily be done in two days? And then 1.5 weeks later be told a ring needs to be sent away? Seems like that should have been communicated up front. What I thought was special about a local store is not. Take away customer service and there really isn't anything unique about Grand Haven Jewelry company.

There were very decently priced gems and some kinda expensive. Plenty of people around to help with prices and items that were in the glass cases. The lady who helped me the most was so kind and very helpful. I definitely am interested in the classes held here and took a schedule for myself. Will hopefully be returning soon. :)

Chris Nelson was so generous with his vast knowledge of metal working particularly about fusing gold to ferrous steel.....and the 100 other questions we had! This studio is outfitted with anything you could imagine using for any metalsmithing or jewelry creating. On top of that is this studio is beautiful, with huge windows and streaming sunlight making it so easy to see your work. Julie, the owner, was also around to help our class. Her work is on display in her shop and it is gorgeous. Look her up online! The studio, in addition to being fully outfitted was also a very comfortable place to spend several days. Lots of space, tables and workbenches. Plenty of everything so you did not have to wait.... She also provided drinks and snacks. It is well located in the Lake Michigan resort town of Grand Haven. Lots of restaurants within walking distance of the studio for a nice lunch, especially the Righteous Cuisine next door. I think we all had a great time and we also made some beautiful jewelry.

This post makes me kind of bummed, because I like to support local small businesses in Grand Haven…read more I'm no longer going to support The Lark on Washington though. Today I brought a dress back to The Lark that I had purchased two weeks earlier. I had purchased the dress 2 days before my son's (casual) wedding, liked it when I tried it on in the store, found sandals to with it and was glad to be all set. I put the dress on while getting ready and discovered that it's label kept folding over the outside back of the dress. I smoothed it back and believed the issue was resolved. Went off to the wedding where I was alerted many times during the evening that "your tag is sticking out." No matter how many times the labels were put back in place, they kept escaping to the outside of the dress. Back home, I hung up the dress to deal with when I could. Since the 8/24 event we have had out-of-town guests (the wedding part), Labor Day weekend craziness and the start of my (school) work year. Finally, I was able to get to The Lark today with the dress AND THE RECEIPT. I kindly told the clerks that I didn't actually want to return the dress (I liked it), but that something was wrong with it and that I hoped it could be resolved. We tried to problem-solve, but they kept asking me what I wanted to do. They were not terrifically proactive. I suggested an exchange, but they discovered that ALL the dresses in that lot had the same defect. I suggested a price reduction to compensate for a seamstress fix. They suggested cutting off the label but decided that that would damage the existing seam. I suggested sending it back the supplier for resolution. Finally, one clerk picked up a phone to call the owner and then handed the phone to me to "plead my case." The owner told me that it was MY decision to wear the dress. Yes, I was at my son's wedding when it was obvious that the defect was a continuing problem. The owner told me that the price tags were not on it. Yes, I took them off because I wore the dress to my son's wedding. The owner told me that the dress had been worn. Yes, again, I wore it to my son's wedding. The owner told me that other people had purchased the dress in other colors, and none had been returned. Umm...ok. The owner told me that I should have returned the dress within 10 days. Yup. However, I kind of seriously doubt that given all the other reasons this was MY FAULT, adhering to the 10-day policy would have altered what, at the heart of it, is HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE at The Lark on Washington. So sad, really.
